Just thought I'd let ya'll know that MMJ will be on David Letterman on June 8th. This info from an extremely reliable source.
awesome! i hope they bust out a don dante!!!
woohoo! this is good news!! I second Don Dante...
Quoteawesome! i hope they bust out a don dante!!!
Hope is a good thing, but unless they create a Dondante radio edit (which I hope they don't), that will never be played on Letterman.
We have already seen Gideon and Anytime played on other late shows, maybe this time we'll see What a Wonderful Man. Although they have been playing the crap out of Knot Comes Loose on Sirius lately, I hope they don't play that...
i hope they throw down one big holiday, or just delve into their back catalog. i think Heartbreakin' Man would work perfectly. Or O.
one big holiday had its time to shine, they did it on conan. they need to mix it up. Wordless Chorus live is amazing, really something different. I also like Lay Low, great tune off of Z. They gotta go w/ something off Z, and i hope it's something they haven't yet performed on a tv show...
What a Wonderful Man is awesome live. That would be a good one, or a kick ass version of Lay Low.
Actually it will be interesting to hear Dave's thoughts about the band. He always has something to say at the end about the musical guest and you can usually tell if he really likes them or not.
I think wonderful man would work best, Lay Low would be fine, but i like the solo work too much to cut it short for TV. also, they should probably stay away from wordless chorus, as jim doesn't play on that song. and for someone tuning into letterman and seeing MMJ for the first time; a guitarless jim james is not an impression i'd want to make.
then again - i don't know anything of the workings of these machines - so my opinion should be taken with several grains of salt
I'll wager it's Lay Low.
odds on Off The Record -200
odds on Lay Low are -175
odds on Wonderful Man are even
odds on Gideon are + 150
Don Dante +175
Wordless +150
It beats 4 U +200
any other tune from any album +250 (my guess would be Way That He Sings or One Big Holiday)
you want action, let me know. I am a pretty decent odds maker. obviously I am leaning towards Off The Record ;)
Good Luck.
I'll take 100 on Laylow and back it up with 50 on gideon. check's in the mail
guys, i seriously think it's gonna be easy morning rebel.
We the fans should vote on what they play......
Quoteguys, i seriously think it's gonna be easy morning rebel.
damn... you're totally going to be right - i don't know how i missed this... ha
QuoteWe the fans should vote on what they play......
cast one vote for the Pina Colada Song.
Chills.
DO IT.
;)
EC-that would pay nice. do you want to take it??? my money is on Off The Record.
QuoteChills.
DO IT.
;)
I second that.
Woohoo!!! Awesome news. I definitely agree about that they should play Dondante. I need to see if it's possible to make another good live version of that song as the Austin City Limits one. Not that I doubt it, because I don't but I just want to see that kind of perfection one more time.
If my sources are correct, and my sources being me, myself, and I, I would have to say they will play Off the Record. They played One Big Holiday on Conan, which is just slightly less popular than David Letterman. It being the prime late night show, I would put my money on them playing their single, Off the Record. I would guess that the producers of Letterman have told them to play their single off their new album. I don't really watch Letterman, but I would venture to guess other bands have played their singles from their most recent record. Just a thought! I can't wait to see what they end up playing, though.
Nah, banjo, that's the worst guess I've ever heard. I bet $500 that they definitely won't play Off the Record. 8)
Dude I am going to see you this weekend, and I will go ahead and collect my $500. If they don't play off the record I promise I will repay you. No seriously, I will.
We'll see.
QuoteWe'll see.
Stop being a troll, Gregg, and tell us what song you think they will play. Come on now! :P
I would like to see them play a slower one I think.
Man, I would love to see Knot Comes Loose.
Shaffers band might play Off the Record before and after commercial breaks but MMJ will play What a Wonderful Man.

Pina Colada song it is :)
I can't wait to see Paul rockin' out to whatever it is. That guy is a trip.
Dondante or Knot Comes Loose!!! Please!!!

I don't think the producers of Letterman have much of a say. When Bright Eyes played back in 2003, they were pimping the "Lifted..." album and Conor & co. played "Trees Get Wheeled Away" which wasn't on "Lifted..." nor on any Bright Eyes album still to date. A strange move, if you ask me. But then again, Conor Oberst is really freakin' strange. I'd guess they'd do Off the Record though, just because I kept thinking they were going to play it on both Conan and that other guy who took over for that one guy from Sportscenter. I think Off the Record would appeal to more people that aren't really into music, they just watch the Late Show every night. But who knows, I'm wrong with a lot of things.
Just heard that 10 or so members of the Boston Pops will be joinging the band on this appearence. My vote now goes to Dondante. It might be too long but it would be perfect to do with the Pops!
If they're playing with some of the Boston Pops, the 'Knot Comes Loose' would be great...
That makes sense because they have been playing the shit out of Knot Comes Loose on Sirius Satellite Radio.
I stopped liking Off the Record as much due to overplay, but after seeing the extremely reverb drenched guitar solo('s) from the Off The Record in Coachella--WOW! That would blow first time listeners away!

:-/
damnit.
i'm going to be out of town on the 8th...hopefully i can find a tv.
Worry not, one of us will probably be able to get it online.
So the Boston Pops are going to be there too?? That will be amazing!!
Holy shit, has anyone ever been this excited about an episode of Letterman? Maybe Jim will give the top 10 reasons why MMJ is the best fucking band to ever walk the face of the earth. In no particular order.......
Tennesee Fire
At Dawn
It Still Moves
Z
Chocolate and Ice
Split
Early Recordings Vol. 1
Early Recordings Vol. 2
Heartbreakin' Man
Elizabethtown Soundtracks
I am almost certain this will not happen, but I would cream my shorts if the boys played "Dancefloors." At the 4:37 mark of the song, here come the Pops to include the killer horn section to end the song.
I think it will be Worless Chorus with the Boston Pops.
Your lovely lineup ;)
Thursday, June 8
Meredith Vieira (The View)
Jeremy Piven (Entourage)
My Morning Jacket (CD, "Z")

Dancefloors! Yeah, that would be brilliant if they played that one. Though I'm pretty sure it's going to be a song from "Z", obviously!
I'm hoping for "Into The Woods" since it's my current favorite on that album at the moment, but I also guess it will be "Wordless Chorus".
"It Beats 4 U" would have been very nice too, though.
Knot Comes Loose........you heard it here first.
This is gonna be a tasty show, no doubt...actually will turn on Letterman voluntarily for the 1st time in a LOOOONG time :D
The Pops, fuckign right. a taste of whats to rock Boston to its core. thank god i have PVR, or TiVO for those who dont know what PVR is. im gonna tape it ( i guess record would be the werd to use, as there is infact, no tape involved)
So, were they announced at the beginning of the show? I can't bring myself to turn the TV on yet......
Yes, they announced them at the beginning. Shortly after his monologue Dave recapped who was on the show which turned into a pretty long exchange between him and Paul on the proper way to say My Morning Jacket a la W-NNNN-B-C from Howard Stern's Private Parts. Pretty cool.
and the correct answer was mooormon. Just kidding. They played Gideon.
That was great.....would love to see one of the Boston shows. :(
They were great, but it was strange to see them in tuxedos.
anybody get this recorded? i missed it by just a few minutes. i'd love to see it. if that's all i get of them with the Pops.
I don't have the right setup. I was counting on someone else like Deanna to have captured this. We'll probably know more by morning.
I thought it started off a little strange, but overall I liked it. WTF was the instrument that guy started off with?
That was amazing!!! I really hope someone tapes those Boston Pops concerts.
I saw them do By My Car with three strings players about 5 years ago here in Louisville. To see them on Letterman with the Boston Pops was almost too much.
Letterman seemed pretty impressed as well. 8)
Hell yesss. That was classy. ;D
There's a mov file waiting for you all in here. (http://www.savefile.com/projects.php?pid=646887)

The Pops help rock Letterman show
A day after playing with Bernadette Peters and celebrity stand-in Arnold Palmer, Keith Lockhart and 13 Pops players headed to NYC to do David Letterman's show with ragged rockers My Morning Jacket. (They dressed up for the occasion.) ``Three letters -- Wow," said drummer Patrick Hallahan after performing ``Gideon." ``I can't wait to get 100 of them behind us." (MMJ plays with the Pops at Symphony Hall June 21 and 22.) Said Pops arranger Patrick Hollenback: ``If they play with half the energy they had tonight, it'll be a great show." .

Apparently they do not know what they are in for, unless he is worried about the energy level of the Pops.
Those will be some great shows. Do the POPS allow taping?
"By My Car" would be awesome with some strings!
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I just forwarded this to all my friends who have yet to truly experience the Jacket...What a great performance last night...oh, and that OBH at Cocahella made the hair on my arms stand up!!! Goddamn I love this band so much....

ah, I'm waiting on it to download right now. I woke up this morning with this horrible feeling in my stomach - half vodka/half missing the letterman performance...........NOW, I think everything will be OK. Thanks Deanna!!!! You saved the day.

If there is a kind and loving God smiling down on us, then yes.
>...speaking of which, how great would Strangulation be?
I didn't see the very end of Letterman - did he have anything to say about the performance?
Both of the links that I've seen for downloading the video are currently broken. Could someone who has it kindly upload to YouTube or GoogleVideo and pass along the link? I would be eternally grateful.
EDIT: I was just able to get it from SendSpace, so I'll see if I can post it on YouTube.
OK, Here you go:

Play this at high volume to get the full effect. This was SO amazing......the intensity of the performance.......but mostly the timeliness right now of the LYRICS.......truly incredible.

He had Z in his hands and said something like, "that was really something wasn't it Paul" Then he and Paul repeatedly said "My Morning Jacket", "My Morning Jacket". He seemed impressed. With all the shitty performers Dave has on, you could tell he enjoyed the Jacket with the Pops, but how could he not?

Dave hardly ever mentions an artist after they've performed other than thanking them along with all the other guests. They must have left an impression.
.........
if the two boston shows are not taped, an amazing treasure will be lost to the world forever. that performance rocked. i can't imagine a full orchestra behind them.

Agreed. Imagine an entire SET of them with the pops. It truly would be a magical evening.

That would be epic!!!! And I'm sure it was taped!
i can't even believe what i just saw. i had no idea that they would be playing with the boston pops on letterman (i never went in this thread).
i can't believe that. that is one of the greatest things i've ever seen. you boston people are going to have your lives changed, i think.
oh my goodness.
http://culturebully.blogspot.com/
This blog has an MP3 of the performance + the video clip.
The guy wrote this about the band:
"I've never been much of a fan of the band, but this song completely blew me away. It is one of the best "late night TV performances" I've seen in quite some time. Simply beautiful."
PS whilst you're there be sure to download Heatseeker by Valient Thorr ;)
I got teary eyed as Jim was letting out his last few screams. It goes far beyond hearing to a place where you FEEL something in a very powerful way, It made me remember the first time I really listened to the band and I played The Bear and I just KNEW because I felt something really powerfuly. Simply Beutiful is a very accurate description of the Letterman performance.
GOOSEBUMPS
I agree with goosebumps. They've transformed an ethereal song into a prayer. I think I may start waking up and watching it every morning. Or maybe I'll face my computer towards Nashville five times per day and watch prostrate.
