A Vanderbilt University tradition for over 30 years, the Rites of Spring Music Festival continually brings top musical acts to the university campus year-after-year. Committed to continuing the tradition, Vanderbilt University Concerts is excited to announce the addition of indie rockers My Morning Jacket, singer/pianist Ben Folds and jam powerhouse trio Gov't Mule to this year's line-up. The annual outdoor festival will take place on Friday, April 21st and Saturday, April 22nd.

With a sound described as lonesome, haunting and almost classic country at times, My Morning Jacket will headline the first night of this year's festival. Propelled to indie stardom in 2001 with the single "The Way That He Sings," the four-piece band from Louisville, KY released their first major label album, It Still Moves, in 2004. Built solidly around the vocal and songwriting talent of lead singer Jim James, the band's music effortlessly navigates from rock to pop, with a touch of reggae and disco influences. Their most recent album, Z, was released in the Fall of 2005.

Best-known as the leader of the trio Ben Folds Five, which parted ways in 2000, Nashville resident Ben Folds will headline Saturday night's line-up. Since 2000, he has pursued a career as a solo artist and released his first album, Volume I, under the pseudonym Fear of Pop. The album includes the song "In Love," which features vocals from William Shatner. In 2005, true fans were rewarded with the release of Songs for Silverman, Folds' second album containing inspirational, edgy and sometimes heartbreaking songs.

"With several of the regional multi-day music festivals throwing in the towel, we are thrilled to continue to offer fans in the Southeast an opportunity to enjoy great live music from their favorite artists," states Candelyn Oliverius, Senior Director for Student Services at Vanderbilt University.

Additional confirmed talent for this year's festival includes; Cary Brothers, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, B Young, Blue Merle, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Hopsing Project, Hot Buttered Rum, Old Union and Zac Brown Band with more to be announced soon.

Both shows are open to the general public. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, March 1st at 10 am CST at all Ticketmaster locations, online at www.ticketmaster.com, at Grimey's New & Preloved Music in Nashville (www.grimeys.com) or by calling 615-255-9600. Tickets can also be purchased with Cash or Check with no service fees included only at the Sarratt Box Office on the Vanderbilt campus. For more information call 615-343-3361.

Free parking is available at the Terrace Place Parking Garage, located off 21st Avenue South on Terrace Place.

Boston, Tracy?
Title: Re: Rites of Spring Music Festival at Vanderbilt
Post by: ycartrob on Feb 17, 2006, 11:00 AM
QuoteBoston, Tracy?

My first true rock and roll love affair, where I knew the album frontwards and backwards. I had inherited my big sister's Zeppelin, Doors, Allman Bros, Beatles, etc...but Boston was MY discovery! And I could listen to it on MY turntable with MY speakers! I can still remember the liner notes on the back of the album, as if it were yesterday...

If you're looking for something to tell you that the band in question is composed of nearly notable former members of various bands, or how many jam sessions the drummer sat in on with rock superstars who are now dead or disabled, or retired, forget it.  Unless the names Mother's Milk, Middle Earth, or the Revolting Tunes Revue ring any particular bells, where the people who make up this band called Boston came from is irrelevant to who and where they are now.

Listen to the record!

As to how the band came together, we'll let lead signer Bradley Delp tell the story: "Fran knew Barry, and I knew Fran, and Fran had played with Sib, and Sib had played with Tom, and Tom knew me, but Fran didn't know that I knew that he knew Barry to, so what happened was..."

Listen to the record!

If you still need more information, try this.  Boston is masterminded by a guitarist named Tom Scholz.  An MIT graduate with a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Tom was living a split existence at the time his concept for Boston began to fall together.  By day, he was a highly-touted member of a product design wing of a major Massachusetts-based corporation, helping to develop all sorts of media machinery he's not supposed to talk about.  By night he was a member of any one of a handful of constantly shifting bands on the North Shore club circuit in Boston.  Considering the day gig, when he bought 12-track recording equipment and began experimenting with basement tapes, mastering the machinery at his disposal posed no great problem.  With these extraordinary homemade demo tapes, the band was soon better known to record company executives in L.A. and New York than it was to taste-mongers in its own hometown.

Listen to the record!

If you insist on having it further spelled out for you, consider this, what distinguishes Boston's music is although by it's definition heavy rock & roll, it evidences a greater concern for melodic and harmonic flow than practically any band you can think of working the same general territory.  Also, consider the use of technology as an instrument, all the more remarkable because this is a first album.  Of the tendency for technology to take over in the hands of lesser practitioners, Tom Scholz says, "It depends completely on the person using it.  People have already fallen prey to that, in my opinion, with items that they just go out and buy to get a certain sound without really understanding where that sound comes from and how to apply it."  Those who question how precise technology of the group's record will translate to a live environment will discover that, with the aid of some special sound innovations developed for performance by Scholz, the Boston concert will easily be a comparable experience to the Boston album.  That's a lot to look forward to, but you know where to start.

Listen to the record!  ;D

Dude, they're in my top 3 favorite bands of all time. That entire album is pure gold (i can never really get into the last song as much as the others, though).

I would love to be able to write harmony like Tom Scholz. That man is a master of guitar harmony.

Tom Scholz is awesome.  The solo at the end of  "Hitch A Ride" is amazing.  I know Third Stage gets dumped on a great deal, but there are a minimum of  4-5  Tom Scholz goosebump moments for me on that record.

i brought up and setup the DJ side-stage and PA system on the main stage one year.. it was somewhat crowded but I didn't really stay for the meat of the festival as it was the year that Nappy Roots was playing. even if it is vanderbilt (which is known as a calmer school) be prepared to see some wild shit (copulation in bushes, etc)

I have nothing new to add to this thread except that I just got REALLY excited about this show.

I bought my plane ticket yesterday which makes it feel more real.

I think we need to start speculating a set list so that we can get all hyper and excited thinking about it.  I think they will choose not to open with Wordless Chorus, but instead with Lay Low.  What is everyone else's valuable opinion?

But the most important question of all:
will they play the pina colada song?

I think we should place bets.

Awesome - it'd be very much appreciated, and we'd both feel good to be part of the clan... uh, or tribe?... Part of the pillagers?

We'll be showing up around the time for Blue Merle or Clap Your Hands... Look forward to meeting you all at last.

Very cool, thanks guys. I'll be introducing myself as Brad/AngryEwok to anyone with horns... This will be the first show where I've been very social. I'm looking forward to it.

Now how fucking amazing would it be if MMJ played the Immigrant Song, whilst all of us are bouncing around in the rain with viking helmets? Oh HELL yes...
