What are you waiting for, go ahead....tell me.
I am on call tonight in the ICU at Vandy but was able to walk over while another resident covered for me for a few minutes to see part of the show from right outside the fence. Had to leave when they hit DONDANTE. Partial setlist:
ONE BIG HOLIDAY
DANCEFLOORS
LOWDOWN
(cover) -> HEAD HELD HIGH (Velvet Underground cover)
WHAT A WONDERFUL MAN
LAY LOW
THE WAY THAT HE SINGS
OFF THE RECORD
DONDANTE
Still playing now, can't wait to hear what all I missed ...
They sounded good if a bit frustrated but a less than overly enthusiastic crowd.
;D

(and who's that dude with the short hair playin bass?! tommy's way hot)
i could tell that they're very glad to be back :)
one of the best Off The Records I've ever heard, by the way. They ended with Mageetah, which was amazing. Another kickass point was where Jim dragged the end of a song out, i think it may have been lay low, and kept soloing with some crazy Eddie Van Halen tapping stuff. t'was fully awesome.
Cheers 4 posting Tom! :)
The word Jealous doesn't even come close...
Awesome stuff! You could certainly tell they were glad to be back out. They were ready to get some angst out. Jim looked like he had to hold back from rocking out on Golden even. The Van Halenish deal was wicked. I'd never heard him do that before. I like his moonwalk too. Nice.
I'm pretty sure the encore was:
Golden
Wordless
Anytime
Mahgeetah
I really liked the the breakdown on the end of Mahgeetah. They almost sounded like they were going to go into another song before the finale. "Head Held High" sounds like the right choice for the fourth song but I'm not very familiar with that song and had never heard of them covering it. Anybody else know if that was the song? It sure rocked!
OK, well,
-we made it to the rail pretty easily. Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah! was (were) pretty dang good. And when I say pretty dang good, I mean, they rocked. Great energy and great sound. Love to go see one of their headline shows.
-Meg reassuring me that even though she felt old in the crowd of young college folks, that I obviously really had to feel old. :)
-the wonderful Lightning 100 DJ's who whipped us up into a frenzy before each act... :-/
-The boys brought it from the git go. Don't know how the rest of the crowd was reacting (behind us) but we were rocking the rail. I think I even saw some man love between 2 posters here, but I ain't naming no names ;) In fact, I got shoved out of the way by someone pursuing man love! :P
-They played Dancefloors second! Damnit, for me!
-I'd say the best Off the Record I have seen.
-Carl ROCKING OUT! duuuuuuude.
-I'd say the best 1-horned-cheap-ass-viking-helmet-over-the-security-guard-launch-onto-the-stage-that-Jim-tried-to-eventually-put-on-before-Golden-but-couldn't by Sweatboard. That's the last 2 Nashville shows we came with an offering that was accepted.
-Jim singing Way That He Sings over his shoulder, facing the side of the stage.
-I was overtaken by the ghost of Fred Sanford having the "big one" in church when the first chord of Run Thru was played (and held). It was infectious, I saw it all around me. I had to grab fellow crunksters to hold me up and visa versa. The security guard even stepped to the rail to make sure eveything was OK. I felt like the Lord was about to bring it, and I knew I had to hear it, but I wasn't sure if I was mentally or physically capable of hearing the news and I needed my fellow lads to help me stand. We rocked it out anyhow.
-loved how they totally blew up Mahgeetah towards the end; sort of like, "Oh, so you know how this song goes? Well, guess what?"
-Patrick signaling planes whilst Bo played the key bit on Run Thru.
-Really blown away how they blew the roof off an outdoor show (thanks LA). I was expecting a great show, but not a killer show with that much energy, and L O U D. They have also added so many little intricate twists to their songs and I hate to use the word polished? Or how about another level? Seems like they have taken it to another level, that's better.
-Excellent Dondante. The ending sounded more or less like the blues, the first time I have thought that; I said to myself, "Man, that ain't nuthin' but the blues". Masterful.
-Tommy sporting the Abe Lincoln hairdo (thanks LA). Anyone else think Tommy is trying to mimmick Tom E? Scary...
-Jim quoting Mitch Hedberg, "You don't have to be an athelete to drink Gatorade, you just have to be a thirsty dude".
-Also, Jim's word association with spring: blue, fresh, green, man made...
-met Angry Ewok and friend. Got to say hello to AntonioStrohs and wife, hope you guys had a safe trip back and Happy Anniversary! The New-guy-who-drove-from-Dallas was on the lawn (in the house). Got to see Folded Fawn; where you been bro'? You post here 3 times then bolt? I'll see you at BTS in September.
-most of all, thanks to Brian, Meg, Corey, Trey, Tom (and his lovely lady) and LA. What a simply awesome evening. You guys are special folks and I really appreciate your kindness and big hearts. We'll do it again, soon! Love you all!
Will post picures soon
The set list says Gideon, but no Gideon

dAMN!
It was so great getting to meet some of you guys, and put some faces to names! Unfortunately, me and Alan had to jet at the end of the show, we didn't get home until 5:30 in the morning... but this was so worth it. He and I both agreed that you guys made us both feel like extended family. Can't thank you enough for that. And thanks to Meg for the Viking helmet! I tied up a chin-strap and have been wearing it, sans clothes, all day long (granted, I've only been away for about 30 minutes).
Short rant :
Before we were able to muscle our way up to the CRUNK SECTION!!!!, we were stuck in a crowd of disinterested locals... A group of frat boys were physically blockading us from getting in front of them, but they wouldn't rock out, either... they were just guzzling beer and bitching, talking about kicking somebody's ass? What's that about? One of them actually said, "FUCK MY MORNING JACKET"... That's a major first for me, but I've never been on a college campus show before, either.
Anyway, Clap Your Hands had an amazing show! Great opener for MMJ. I wasn't really sure how they'd sound live, but they sounded quite awesome. I'll definately be seeing them at Bonnaroo.
The first thing I noticed about the Jacket, as they came onto the stage, was that our beloved bass player has been replaced with a cleancut dude... Imagine that!
The cover was quite good.
Jim broke out into some wowza extended solo'ing several times throughout the show. Major kickassiness.
Sorry, hard to form complete thoughts.
That sounds like FUN.
A VU cover!!! Far out.
I try to be happy for y'all, but jealousy prevails :-/
wow...this show was amazing...i think as good if not better than the Palace show in November! my face was OFFICIALLY rocked off...i am still high on that MMJ performance...can't wait till Bonnaroo!
AHHHH, Where to begin. If I could come back after I'm dead and live just one day over again yesterday would not be a bad choice at all.
-It's like 3:00pm Meg, Corey and I are at the University getting our tickets. Corey and I are out in the car while Meg is inside buying tickets. All of a sudden Corey and I notice some live music off in the distance. Corey's like "Shit, is that them" I'm like "I don't think so" (I didn't recognize the song, I later found out it was "Burritio Head" Corey's like "That sounds like Jim" Both at same time "HOLY SHIT THAT"S THEM!!!!" So Corey and I run up and catch the soundcheck from the rail where we would be standing several hours from then only this time we were basically by ourselves. This is what I call good timing and the higher powers would have it no other way.
-So Tracy and LA, I can't possibly say enough good things about these two. I have the best time around them and they keep me laughing. We had a good time at the house before the show, I got to play pinball and admire Tracy's Rush collection. That was cool.
-The show - They litteraly BLEW THE ROOF OFF THE VENUE. Like L.A. said, considering it was an outdoor show that's pretty impressive. As previously mentioned they were going all out with the extended outros, solos etc. etc. Off The Record went to the next level, the outro was a bit different but even cooler, if that is possible. Lay Low - best version ever heard this is the song that Tom talked about the Van Hallen tapping at the end, I thought I had a really great video recording of this song but it didn't turn out and now I want to cry not for me but for you people that couldn't be there to see it. Cool to see Wordless not in the opening slot, I love that Burrito Head song who sings it originally? Jim was screaming quite a bit and doing so with some real passion throughout the entire show. I about jumped out of my pants during Anytime, litterally. Run Thru - A religious experience as Tracy already mentioned.....those notes, oh those notes they just seem to reach down inside your gut and pull your heart out through your throat. I could go on all day about this show but in the end they played thier asses off, showed alot of love and we did the same thing right back at them, at least the people around me did, I couldn't really give two shits what the crowd was like behind me. So, it's getting harder and harder to rank the shows I've been to but I actually think this one might have been the best. It's breathtaking to see them take what you already thought was off the charts and keep pushing it. It's.................FUCK I don't even know what to say here. Great Show!!!!
Even Better than the show was being able to see my lovely friends again. I can't wait to see them next time. I wanted to cry on the way home because it was over and because I know it will be a while before we get to see each other again. I already miss you all. I said I WANTED to cry I didn't actually shed tears, I put in some Rush and Jammed right out in my car and laughed about the Chicken Penis. Well, I could have said a million different things about last night but this is what came to mind in the last few min.
Love,
Brian

Ha, great story!
Head Held High is a Velvet Underground tune. It's on the album "Loaded"
NOW jealousy prevails... Thanks Sweatboard ;)
Velvet Underground ah ok, they always pick the coolest covers to do.
Brian, i can't remember if you mentioned it or if i dreamt it, but did some other guy get a recording of the show?
If they did I would be really, really HAPPY but I don't think anyone taped it. I'm kicking myself in the ass today. My friend called me on my way home and I was just going off about how amazing the show was and how they really jammed stuff out and added some new twists and he's like so, you got a good recording of it right? I'm like "no, I decided not to tape it." He's like "are you sad?" I'm like "I am now ASS HOLE!" :'(
Oh no! I thought we had a pair of people taping this show! Is there any way we can splice the audio of various videotapes to get a semi-decent quality recording?
I've got some video of...........
One Big Holliay - I'm tapeing AND going ape shit so their is a lot of camera shake. But, I've watched it like three times and the audio is suprisingly not bad. You really get a feel for what it was like up in the crunk section.
Dancefloors - Fucking Mind Blowing version. Tracy tapped it and it's some great footage. You can hear me say at the end "They Brought It, THEY BROUGHT IT!!!, then someone say's Oh Hell, then LA says "HELL BALLS" I love that video.
Lowdown - Corey taping and it's nice because he knows what the fuck he's doing and their is no camera shake and it's a great song.
Wordless - Also Corey tapeing. It's tremedous the lights are absolutly wicked on this one. The screams at the end are echoed by the crunk unit and it sends chills down my spine. Nice work there Corey!!!
My grammy award winning footage of Lay Low was somehow lost. It makes me want to cry because it was a truly magical rendition.
Anyway, I need Deanna to e-mail me so I can get these videos up on her video on demand site. The first three songs are all one file and I don't know how to seperate them. So, hopefully she can contact me and help me out. This is all I have to contribute. I started to try and tape Mahgeetah but I was just to out of controle and I shut off the video. Damn Me!!!!!!! Because, like they said they FUCKING KILLED IT! I got a small file where Jim waxes poetic about spring time and shit.
I was right behind you while you were recording Lay Low (I'm pretty sure that was it), and I remember your memory card saying it was full... and me thinking to myself, "Fuck!"
Maybe we'll be able to pool resources and have a semi-complete archive of the show? 4 songs recorded is better than none, at least.
8)
You are exactly right on that one my brother. I mean I just remember smiling the biggest smile I've ever had in a while when stairing at the back of my digital camera on Lay Low. I was thinking "I'm trapping magic on this mini sd disk and everyone will be able to experience it with me!!!!" Alas, you that wen't there will just have to speculate as to how truly amazing it really was." Sorry, but I can't contain myself, even now, one day later.
Oh yeah, interesting tid-bit, during soundcheck I noticed they played some notes from an M.Ward song. I can't think of the song right now but I know there are a lot of M.Ward fans out there that would appreciate that. ;)
First off, thanks to all of you guys for sharing your reviews with us. They are sweet.
Secondly, I wonder what M. Ward song it was. That's awesome.
And thirdly, did I hear my name? :)
You can send anything my way and I'll try to hook it up for everybody.
can you send me a link again. Thanks again,
Brian :-*
PM-ing you now. :)
Thanks everybody for their stories! It's so good to hear they're back in full force!

-Got to say hello to AntonioStrohs and wife, hope you guys had a safe trip back and Happy Anniversary! ]
Thanks Tracy! It was a truly wonderful way to help celebrate our 25th. I can't say anything more that hasn't been said already about how great a performance it was,So I'll just talk about how the MMJ fans we met (Tracy,Brian,Tom,Corey,Meg etc)are some the nicest, sweetest and craziest(in a good way ;D) people ever. I sure wish we could have got a chance to hang out with you all a little longer . Maybe next time.
Rock on My MMJ Family!
I can't believe that nobody's mentioned the AWESOME drum solo at the beginning of Run Thru. I had tears streaming down my face for that. ;D
Holy moly that was a wonderful show. I've never been at the front before where you're all pressed up against the gates, and I'd like to formerly apologize to the small girl beside me. At one point I turned to my right and saw her boyfriend shielding her face with his hat, and I said "Oh you GUYS, is my hair getting in your face?" And they said, "ummm, kind of." Damn. ;)
It was pretty cool to have people singing along as much and as loud as they did behind me.
The fellas were on FIRE that night. It was definitely one of the best shows I've seen them do. Carl rocked pretty fucking hard. We all agreed. ratsprayer, you would've freaked out. Not that Carl rocked harder than the others, or doesn't normally rock so hard, but he was moving all over the damn place and it was awesome.
One of my favourite things was watching Jim strut, and if you were there, you know what I'm talking about. Was it Anytime?
When I was standing in line, every time the door would open, I would hear a snippet, and I'm like "Is that what I think it is?" And then getting a text message from Corey saying "Sound Check. Turn right out the doors." :)
Holy fuck, a Gram Parsons cover nearly kicked the crap right out of me. That was spectacular. haha, this dude behind me taps me on the shoulder and says "This song is awesome, but I don't recognize it - what album is it from?" heh.
But it was Older Guys, not one of the Burritos. (if you've never seen the video for that, you have to. I think it's on the youtube thing) rock it.
It was really awesome to meet such lovely people and to get to hang with dudes that I really love. A memorable and special night with a rock factor to 11.
I believe there are a multitude of pictures out there, so you dudes get those quick to Riny.
I just realized outside that I wasn't clear. Gram Parsons was in a band called The Flying Burrito Brothers, and they were the ones who did Older Guys. word. And it medleyed into the VE song. I love me a medley.
Oh yeah, Trey can you post soon so I know you got home okay? :)
so I'm reading all these reviews, hating my life now for not being able to go to this show (I'm within reasonable distance, but had conflicting plans, but not anything so important that I should've ditched 'em and gone now I realize). But I thought, well it's okay, somehow i'll deal with it.
Then, I read they coverd "OLDER GUYS"?!
Noooooooooooo!! life just got so much worse that I wasn't there. I have all the original vinyl Flying Burrito Brothers albums as well as the Gram Parsons solo albums. Older Guys is my phone ringer (i'm a dork i know)!!!
I'd love any recording out of this show, but did anyone get the FBB cover?!

hey, i just got home about an hour ago!
wow, what a great show. It was great hanging out with you guys and rockin' out to the Jacket. Can't wait until next time!
I WENT OVER THE RIVER - AND INTO THE WOODS - WHERE DID I GO?
Whose head is that? ;)
I have some thoughts, but I need to collect them first. I had a rough morning (this morning) and wasn't able to check in yesterday to post anything.
That last picture should have been titled, "Can you see the helmet on my head?!" 8)
Thanks for the stories. I smiled the whole time I was reading them.
Glad to hear the boys are still exploring the songs. I love that!
I am a little confused on the cover. Was it FBB's or Velvet Underground? Both? Medley?
I was there and I'm honestly not sure about the cover. I know that "Head Held High" was the main part of the song but I'm not sure if the beginning was the Flying Burrito's or not. I guess it makes sense if the setlist dubbed it "Burritohead" but I do know "Head Held High" ended it.
medley. 2 song medley. :) or, at least, they just kind of went from one into the next.
god, at least i think that's what happened... who can back me up on this? no, i think i'm right. because i didn't know the ve song too well, and i remember thinking "man, i don't remember older guys sounding like this..." ;)
QuoteWhose head is that? ;)
i believe that would be the head of a viking warrior, come back from the frozen tundra to have his face rocked the hell off of his head. :)
trey, glad to hear you made it back safe. :)
dudes, we have yet to mention that tom eisenbraun TOTALLY DISSED us. which might be understandable.
tom to new girlfriend: "uh, yeah, so we're going to hang with these dudes that i know. from the internet. and, ah, they're going to be wearing viking helmets and stuff, so... ah..." ;)
Well, you have to admit she was fearless. I think it was Tracy who said it best.........Tom and his Lady Friend get in the car leaving the house - Lady Friend to Tom - "Tom, you can do much better than this!!!" ;D
Houston...the Eagle has landed.
I have to wake up in 5 hours for work :o
It was well worth it brother. It was nice to meet you, and I solute you for your bravery and dedication. That is what I'm talking about!!!!!!!!
One of the greatest review threads..evah! It sounds like you all had such an amazing time! Hope you're still reelin in the afterglow....;D
Good to see Dancefloors is back. I heard them sound checking it in Chicago (I think?), that song is made for a nice, big jam!

i'd say she's one hell of a trooper for actually waering the helmet with me for the first eight songs or so. i wanted to really rock out, so i put it down on the ground. some other dude quickly found it and sported it, so it went to good use.
not to mention, i trooped around nashville by foot to go to the starbucks right there with her and wore my viking helmet most of the whoel time. she actually associated with me during that time, which is a pretty big thing to say for a guy wearing a plastic viking helmet.
I actually got harrassed by some lame ass McDonald's security dude for having my Viking Helmet on, that night. We were grabbing a bite to eat for the road home - and I had just noted that all of the guards were dressed up like SWAT wannabe's... when this huge ass dude taps on my window (passenger side) because somebody in front of us flicked HIM off, then got scared and said they were flicking US off...
He wanted to see what kind of shit we were up to, and ended up just harrassing me for having a viking helmet.
Those security/cops/Happy Meal SWAT are fucking Gestapo at that McDonalds, the dude said he was "this close" to "yanking that little bitch out of her window and slamming her onto the ground and cuffing her"... That's a nearly direct quote.
Me being 5'5 with a viking helmet, and him being well bigger than me with a can of mace - I kinda wanted to get out of their FAST.
:-X

oh fo sho. i was only teasing because you disappeared for a bit. ;)
i have no idea what i would have done in her situation, but she was very very cool and did not mind our dorkiness. :) which is ALWAYS a good sign in a girlfriend, i'd say.
let me qualify this - i shouldn't do a group dorkiness. i am dorky, the rest of y'all are kick ass as hell. :)
There's not much that hasn't already been said, but I'll put in my $.02.
-The boys were on fucking FIRE. Carl rocked out like I've never seen him rock out and Jim did a bunch of yelling, much more so than usual. There were a couple of times when he just walked up to the mic and yelled in the mic between songs.
They were clearly re-energized from the downtime of the last few months.
-I think I yelled louder than ever in the "OH SHIT! RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!" part near the end of "Run Thru". That part especially got me for some reason that night.
-"Dancefloors" was played for me, not Tracy. That's my jam. ;)
-It was wonderful sharing the whole experience with the folks around me. You know who you are. Y'all are fantastic. Can't wait for the next time.
-Patrick's snare drum increasing in volume during "Dancefloors". It wasn't because the soundguy was changing it either. It was because he was beating the ever-loving shit out of it.
-Tom's haircut. It was neat to see the expressions on his face for the first time while thumping that bass. He means business, folks.
-Bo brought it all night. Non-stop. He and Patrick did quite a bit of clapping and hyping to the crowd. Gotta love that.
Who else here was impressed with the Secret Machines? Only thing I didn't like was when the lyrics were a little too literal.
I liked the build up in their songs and that they were mostly 6-7 min long.
I am glad to see Jim's hair is growing out!
First of all, thanks for all the great reviews of the show. Second, I got lucky enough to take in my second MMJ last Friday evening. I first saw MMJ two years ago at ACL when the only thing I knew about the band was that they played a form of Southern Rock. Fell in love with their intensity and emotion that day and been wearing the jacket ever since. Anyways, after about twelve beers, 2,000 sorority girls, and a big chance of rain, MMJ hit the stage at 11:30 and proceeded to just destroy. I just about cried when they started off the show with 'One Big Holiday'...that is about of good as an opening track I know for any band...wish they ran the drum solo a little longer at the beginning...love hearing the other shows where you just never know how long Patrick is going to play before Jim drops in with the guitar...the rest of the show was just surreal and the boys left the stage physically exhausted and drained...I am missing out on Bonaroo but looking forward to seeing MMJ in the future...thanks to everyone who kept the intensity up despite the lame college crowd...catch you later and remember alcohol only makes you tired.
But I'm already wrapped up in a bottle of wine.
They were fucken awesome. Jim looked like a damn tasmanian devil with his hair whipping around and red lights. This one of the top 5 shows i've ever been too and that includes the Palace last year. Can't wait to see them and Pearl Jam in Boston. My two favorites tearing apart one venue.
I am crying over my computer. Seriously, you all are the luckiest bastards on earth. That show sounds sooo amazing! Who took the picture of the set list? Did you take it home with you? Damn it! I don't think I can read about your guys's experiences at this show anymore. I am green with envy. :'(

I feel the same way, and my ass lives in Nashville, too!
