Title: Taste of Chicago
Post by: jeffro79 on Jun 27, 2006, 02:02 AM
Does anyone know at what time the venue opens for the Taste of Chicago Fest. ? I'll be making a 4-4 1/2 hour drive that day to see the show and I dont want to get shut out and I want to get a good view. I'm taking my 16 yr old brother and want him to have a killer time. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff

the taste is going on all weekend. grant park is open to the public. you can get there anytime and hang out. not sure when they let people into the pavillion itself, but it is big and i'm sure you won't have a problem getting a seat. get there before the show hang out have a couple two tree Chicago Style dogs and an Old Style and get pumped for the show!

Very Psyched to see my first Jacket show of 2006...just booked two nights in a downtown hotel.

Anyone heard how long the set is going to be? It's supposed to start at 3:00 pm...

Anyone with taste of Chicago experience please give helpful advice.

Here the story with Taste of Chicago.  Giant food fest w/ 100+ food booths sampling Chicago eateries.

Patrillo bandshell sits at one of the fest with seating for a few thousand and a field/park/lawn behind the seating.  The lawn area is huge and fun but you can't necessarily see the stage from there and so I'd recomed the seats.

The seats are first come first used, and this is a free show so they will fill up and then they will stop allowing access to the seating area.  Once you get a "wristband" (or hand stamp) for the seating area you can leave and come back as often as you like... so I'd recomend heading straight there when you arrive.

The show starts at 3 and Mike Doughtery (sp?) plays before MMJ so I'd assume MMJ at 3:45 - 4 o'clock.

Checked the Taste site and they say the seated area opens half an hour before the show, so that means at about 2:30 pm.

A couple of years ago went to see Wilco and a line had formed fairly early. Just a head's up!

Can't wait!!

yo people- the chicago reader has listed MMJ starting at 4:15 and the next act at 5:55 so MMJ will probably end at 5:30. I'm hoping for "Picture of You" or "Strangulation" anyone else?

(let's see if he changes his mind AFTER the show)...

* Ray Davies, My Morning Jacket, Mike Doughty, 3 p.m. Tuesday. The city of Chicago has certainly brought more spectacular lineups to their Fourth of July concert, but this one is still worthy on its own merits. Earlier this year, Kinks mastermind Ray Davies released his first proper solo set, "Other People's Lives," to deserved acclaim, and Kentucky rockers My Morning Jacket unleashed arguably the best album of their career, "Z," last year. Former Soul Coughing leader Mike Doughty opens.

Hi fellow afficianado's of all things awesome, , have not read all these post's today(life is sooooo hectic), but someone asked what time the Taste show starts, and in fear of repeating what might have already been mentioned, the Advert in the Chicago "Reader" mag state's that Show starts at 3.00pm(mike doughty, whoever HE IS), then the one and only MMJ, are due on stage at 4.15pm.  Ray Davies is due on at 5.55pm, so, hey, "do the math" for lengh of said supergroup!!!. As for my good self, i will be getting a 30 min train ride to said gig at 12.00ish, and will be defending my good spot like a viking on speed till i see my idols.............p.s., any hot leggy blonde's wanner meet up there, i will be in my baggy shorts, and will sport a tattoo on my big ale gut...... :P

Mike Doughty is very good. Do check him out. His last album, "Haughty Melodic" was one of my favorites from last year.

At 515pm EST, I have the stream working just fine, without buffers or blips, on my parents high speed. (I live in Tennessee, but visiting Detroit.)

MMJ appears to be taking the stage on time, so I'll have the band on the headphones, and the World Cup Semifinal in overtime on the tele.

The stage announcement from a rock deejay:
"Fresh from their triumph at Bonnaroo, hear the new sound of American rock and roll . . . "

And now . . . .

Thanks to the peops who posted during the set. Made it more communal, not quite like being there, but better!

It looks like it's ending soon. Too bad Ray Davies didn't ask MMJ to fill his spot, too.

One of you more knowledgeable and experienced than me, please post the complete setlist.

And when all y'all there right now get home, please let us know what it was like up close.

Anrew played on gideon........................  Oh my god, i am as red as a lobster.......... but what a way to fry eh!.  Good crowd, and clever to start with 3 more "commercial sounding" songs, got the crowd right into it.  High points hard to pick, was enthralled as usual by the whole performance, but steam engine, dancefloors, lay low, where all magical, and to open with that organ..........  oh dear lord, my skin is peeling!!!!!, oh one gripe, Tommy???, THAT HAIR, WTF WHERE YOU THINKING!!!!!!

Good show.  It was fun and the band sounded great.  I didn't think this was as good as the Northwestern show, but I still loved it.

Post by: JacketGal on Jul 05, 2006, 01:00 PM
I thought this show was stellar. In fact, I thought it was better than the NW gig but hey, it's all a matter of space and time and the Jacket!

Great day for a show, Jim seemed happy to be there and said that he and the band liked to be at the taste, because they liked to taste things, or sample, if you will....;D

Definite highlight was Steam Engine, it should be on the list of top recordings of the song. It was just perfect. The dude next to me turned to me afteward and asked, "WHAT was that song??" He seemed to be blown away by it. Definitely, a great moment.

Here are some more photos (Riny, feel free to grab these for the gallery, they're not that great but what the heck):

i'd say you'd have to try to register over and over and over to be able to get on.  the spots fill pretty much immediately.  once my download is done, i can try to put it on archive.org or work out some other way to get it to everyone else.

The Taste show was really awesome especially considering it was a festival. I'll take any shows I can get, really.
Steam Engine was out of this world!!  Xmas Curtain was also very unexpected. You gotta love it when bands do this!
the best songs of the set for me were steam engine, xmas curtain and dancefloors since they jam it out at the end!

It was a warm day but not super hot like a few days before so that really saved us.  but it didn't really matter how hot it was because i had the best seat in the house and I was happpppy!
I also enjoyed watching the sign language woman interpreting the songs for the deaf people.

i felt sorry for anyone who could have gone and missed this most excellent show!!  i noticed that a lot of people left after the MMJ set and there were a good amount of fans in the crowd. it was funny how Jim said he wanted to play there again but in the dark!
I can't wait to see them again!!!!!!!   :D  :D

Yeah, Brucie almost missed his cue to get the guitar to Jim when they did "Laylow" in Nashville at City Hall last year. He was standing there in front of the mic with his hands in the position like he was holding the guitar and Brucie ran up and put it over his head 'cause Jim was mid-line and didn't want to miss any of the words. He got it on just in time for the solo at the end.  :)
