Title: Grovel Burrito #2
Post by: George_Savage on Jun 29, 2006, 04:56 PM
All of this talk about covers has me thinking.  They have played dozens of covers over the years.  Even by late '01 when I discovered them, webmaster Ger Potze had put together a "MMJ covers" disc that included some live stuff and some various studio stuff.
Since then they've played dozens more, probably.   A lot of the stuff on Ger's site that they reportedly played wasn't taped, though.  I think that 'Jeremy' by Pearl Jam is in that category; at least I've never heard of it.
So since it's summer and the median age of this forum is probably less than the age of my daughter (24 and
there's so much more) I am wondering if any of you bored whiz kids want to help me (or just take it over) compile a bunch of covers songs that MMJ has played.  Then we burn them to discs and send them out via torrent and USPS for old fogeys like me :)
I know for sure that I could probably come up with 15-20 cover songs that they've done that I have recorded or collected.   I haven't collected many MMJ shows in the last two or three years, but I have a fairly good amount from 2002-03: Black Sabbath, Everybody's Talkin', Peaceful, Easy Feelin', How the gods Kill, Never Tear us Apart, Tyrone,
et al.
Someone was going to attempt to put together a comp disc of the '05 songs played but I don't think that ever got off the ground, and I haven't visited the forum much.  I go through phases and lately it's been Gram, Gram, Gram.   The Neil Young Heart of Gold DVD is also amazing.   Any word on the MMJ DVD?

I can also help put this together.  I put together a covers comp last year but there have been some new ones since then.  I have a pretty rare live version "Dream a Little Dream of Me" that ought to go on the comp, I'll try and get a list together of the covers I have.

I can do that too, but I have a feeling that aMD has everything that I have.  I'll get back at ya next week....

In a quick glance, the Misfits cover is missing, but I'm sure you have it if you have Bonnaroo from this year.

To add to your list...

Sleepwalker (Johnny and Santo) / Old Sept. Blues
Sandworm Cometh

Why Don't You Love Me? (Hank Williams)
The Learning

Also...

Will You Love Me Tomorrow? (Carole King) / The Bear
Live at the Planetarium (9/08/01)

Rocket Man (Elton John)
** Much more raw than Sandworm Cometh, but given the setting, a bit bitter, in my opinion.
Live at the Planetarium (9/08/01)

And I'm guessing you have this...

Suspicious Minds (Elvis Presley)
Live at the 9:30 Club (8/16/02)

I may have missed it in here somewhere, but Jim did a Stellar version of Willie's Always on my Mind (I assume it's Willie's, at least that's who I know it by) - also did Billy 1 from the Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid soundtrack on the "Monsters of Folk" tour with M Ward and Bright Eyes, 10/8/04, Ft Worth, TX.

i didn't know about Billy #1.  You gotta hook me up LowDog!

Edit: Or would anyone want to trade me that track for one of the tracks on my list?

Reedit:  Nevermind, I found it.

Yes, that's the one.   They played it live at the first-ever Alabama show in Birmingham on Sept 4, 2002.  I don't think that's it's a spectacular recording (as none of mine are that good!), but it's listenable.    Jim was hilarious (as usual)
when he said something like "we're really happy to finally be playing here...in the Sunshine State...of Alabama"
Another cover I remembered that I didn't see listed is Nick Drake's Northern Sky.   They did it in Nashville, 10/8/05.   Does anyone have *that* show?   That's the only MMJ show that I've been to but didn't tape.  I was under the impression that it would be taped by the dude named Nick who taped the 6/20/04 Nashville show.   What about Atlanta and Knoxville 10/7/05 (more groveling)...my recordings of these shows are pretty bad-sounding, especially Knoxville.

while we are grovelling over covers here. I need to grovel for three covers that I don't have that I know (suspect in one case) exist:

1. You're a Big Girl Now
2. Dark End of the Street
3. Hot Burrito #1

You're a Big Girl Now is one of my favorite songs of all time, and hearing jim do it would be unreal.  The other two, I'm sure are fantastic and recorded somewhere.  grovel. grovel.

I don't think there is a copy of "Dark End of the Street" in circulation. As far as I know, it was only performed once at that Gram Parsons tribute show. I would die to hear this song performed by Jim.

I have Jim doing Dark End of the Street from the July 10, 2004 Gram Parsons Tribute, or whatever it was called.  He did Still Feeling Blue, which made the DVD, and DEOTS.
I can send it to Dylan for the compilation.

Damn, you've got Dark End! Can't wait to hear it!  You're a Big Girl Now was performed once: September 29, 2005 - The Enterprise (upstairs) - London, UK.  Someone on the forum said that had taped it but weren't going to circulate it becaue they weren't happy with the sound.  I don't care if it sounds like Jim is at the bottom of a hundred foot well, I want to hear it!

btw, Hot Burrito #1 was played the same weekend as Dark End at an in studio performance at KCRW studios the day before the taping.  It was also reportedly replayed several times on KCRW the following week, but I haven't found a copy yet.

Yeh, that was a pretty good show (I wasn't there, unfortunately, but I got it in a trade) - several big-timers, as you probably know from the DVD - Keith Richards, Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle.  I think I once wrote in one of my MMJ "stories", (kinda my travelogue from when I was able to follow them around) that it would be my dream album to hear Jim sing nothing but a bunch of Gram songs.
And then a couple of years later he's up there doing it.  It's kind of weird, though, to hear a reverb-less Jim vocal!  But of course he nailed them, they were great.  It's a shame that You're a Big Girl Now was only played once, I am almost sure that I don't have it now that I have read that it never was circulated.  I'll get my covers together and send it to Dylan.
Corey, if you or Sweatboard of the other Corey (Kory?) want to tree that Birmingham show I will send it to you.  It might be in circulation already, I think I shared it on the old yahoogroups board back in 2002.  They did that cover of Danzig's 'how the gods kill' I was talking about and they played Black Sabbath, too.  I remember them going into a sublime version of Twilight near the end, and Jim sang Bermuda Highway solo to close out the show.

okay, so I have a pretty good list going here.  George is sending me two more that aren't yet on the list and I have a dude from KCRW trying to track down Hot Burrito #1 (btw, anyone know the name of the radio show that performance was on, it'll help him find it).

My question is how should I package this?  I could offer it up for postage/blanks or I could post the mp3s on Rapidshare.  The other question is, are all these tracks trader-friendly so to speak?  This may be a question for Riny or management.  For example, I'm assuming that the tracks that are exclusively on the Early recordings CDs are not tradable.  However, since there are other versions of songs like Tyrone, are those allowed?  How about songs from comps like Wear Your Love Like Heaven or songs that were once available to buy but are long out of print like Behind That Locked Door?  Hopefully I can just bundle all the mp3s together on a zip file and offer them up on my website or rapidshare and just refer people to the Early Recordings since one ought to buy that collection anyway.  So, what's the word?

normally trading is always okay with live audience recordings but don't know how they feel about trading the rare studio recordings that are not available anymore. might be okay as long as there's no profit making involved (which is clearly not the case here) but to be sure you'd have to check with the the band or management.

I would love to hear every single one of those, BigBang. Maybe they'll surface. (fingers crossed).

On a side note, when I kept seeing "Mother" on the cover lists from time to time, I always thought it was "Mother", as in the song by Danzig.  :)
I'm not much of a PF fan, so I didn't know it was by then until a few months ago.

LowDog! Great to see you still spreading the gospel!

Here are three more I didn't see on the list that I would love to have:

1) Jump - Van Halen
2) Don't Stop Believing - Journey ( somewhere, I think I have a photo of Jim wearing a black wig while singing this one)
3) Touch Too Much - ACDC (featuring Two Tone on lead vocals)

The first two were performed at the same show.  I think these were all performed at Headliners, but Jillians may all have been the site for one of these covers.  They finished up a show once with monster version of Touch Too Much.

Hope someone has a recording of these they can share.

Finally, I think this counts as a cover tune, Jim recorded a hymn on the At Dawn demos CD, I think it is called "Lead Me Father" . I don't have that disc with me at the moment.

Good luck with this project. If I find the wig photo, I'll send it along and maybe you can incorporate it into the cover art!

EDIT:  Wow, folks are quick on this list. I removed this post seconds after I posted it to edit it and someone replied in that same instant, so these may seem out of order.

aMD, I did a search and found an old discussing the performance. It looks like it took place on July 6th 'cause someone mentioned that particular show wasn't available to stream on the site.
Maybe that will help them locate it.

You mean, Hot Burrito #1, right?
I also found an article saying that Jim performed it at one of the two performances that were taped for the DVD.  No luck actually tracking it down though, yet.  This is killing me! I hate to be such a completist but I love these two songs I'm trying to track down, especially "You're a Big Girl Now".

Hopefully we can get him in on this and make it a defintive collection.  Thanks for tracking down the date for me Corey, still no luck finding thus far.  Also, for the sake of accuracy and my OCD, the song M Ward and Jim did from Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is actually Billy #4 not Billy #1.

After I called it Billy 1 I was thinking that back when he did it that someone actually came to the conclusion that it is called "Billy (Main Title Theme)" - that's the first song on the disc, I think, and they revisit it several times and play different versions of it.   It's kind of like the Everybody's Talking duo of songs, one's longer and includes the "wah, wah-wah-wah-wah" etc. (the first song on the soundtrack)  The last song on the soundtrack is the same song though it's arranged differently, and has none of that "wah"i-ing on it.  I remember asking Patrick about it and he agreed that he's have rather heard Jim going nuts on that and the stuff at the end where Nilsson kinda warbling; but alas, beggars can't be choosers!  We'll take anything from Jim that we can get, right?!?
