Title: London Astoria
Post by: Tore on Jul 17, 2006, 04:35 PM
Ordered tickets today from seetickets.com for the show 22nd Sept. It said UNRESERVED tickets. What does that mean?

Anyone else attending this show?

Can't wait. Just need airline tickets now... ::)
Title: Re: London Astoria
Post by: corey on Jul 17, 2006, 04:40 PM
I would think that "unreserved" means "General admission", but I have been known to be naive.
Title: Re: London Astoria
Post by: Tore on Jul 17, 2006, 05:06 PM
So that would basically mean that there is no reserved seating? That was my first conclusion, but i am knowned to be norwegian and have never heard of an unreserved ticket...  ???
Title: Re: London Astoria
Post by: BH on Jul 17, 2006, 05:10 PM
that was the best "lost in translation" ever.

I took it as no assigned seats as well. Me and two buds are coming across the pond for the weekend to check out the show. Anyone have any thoughts on the section of London the venue is in? Is it worth/safe getting a hotel there. Thanks.

The Astoria has tables and chairs and a lot of standing and dancing room.
Have a look at this. We've stayed in one called the Gresham Hotel. There are lots of hotels within walking distance.

The Astoria's in a busy, young part of London:

Hey Tore, finally a fellow Jacket fan going to the Astoria show! Like the good Doc said, the Astoria has unreserved standing downstairs & a few chairs upstairs on the balcony. All tickets are the same, you can stand downstairs or sit upstairs (limited).
It's an excellent venue, my fav in London.
I now live in Japan but used to live just outside of London so let me know if I can help you out with anything  :)
My wife & I need to get a hotel for the Friday night...

Thanks, good folks.

A friend of mine is moving to London this fall, so accomodation is all taken care of. Can't wait for this. Sadly MMJ aren't going to Norway as they where supposed to during the cancelled tour. Haven't seen MMJ live since I last saw them in july 2004.

Great to finally hear from some UK fans going to the Astoria show  :)

Hey manicminer  :)
The Astoria's a great venue - I'm sure there'll be a good atmosphere. I've heard fab things about the Irish shows as well. It would be cool if the board members could introduce each other. I met Riny at a show, Shepherds Bush Empire I thik it was. It's always good to put a face to a name.
Enjoy guys  :D

I missed that show by only a month when I was home a couple years ago...2004, no? Or was it 2003? It's all a blur, I'm getting old  ;)
Actually there's no need for a wink, I am getting old & my memory isn't quite what it used to be  :-[

Yeah coming over from Ireland, seen the guys 3 times now already all in Dublin ... needless to say the first time blew me away.

I have tickets bought ... just hope I get them. Got an email saying they were posted, then another saying they were at the box office :S

Guess I'll call them.

Thanks for the welcome, enjoy the show :)

No word on a support band yet.
"Plus special guests" on a ticket in the UK usually means they haven't confirmed who's playing yet,
I guess it's more polite & a little more exciting than just printing "plus a support band"  :)

London is notoriously expensive but you could try these.
http://www.activereservations.com/hotel/en/unitedkingdom/england/greaterlondon/london/camden/bloomsbury?subid=PPCGO1g2071en They're close to the Astoria.

Or you could try this site. Travel in London is easy and quite cheap. http://www.travelstay.com/cheap_london_hotels.htm?gclid=CN_Cpuux-IYCFRemQgod_TQGbg

This one's quite close, and has some twin rooms available:

I've used hostelworld.com quite a lot while travelling, and they never let me down.

I''ve been lurking silently on the board for a while now, but just got too excited to keep quiet any longer having read the Manchester setlist.  Had to register and get involved...

Hey guys,
I'm coming over from Belgium to see the Astoria show with Eurolines buses company. But apparently I would have to leave on thursday already and I can only come back on Sunday at 9PM. It's gonna cost me a fortune to get a hotel for three days. So I guess what I'm saying is: anyone driving back to the vast continent the day after the show or something?? LMK!

Jan, maybe a better option would be to take a flight so you only have to stay one night. London flights with EasyJet or RyanAir are pretty cheap.

Living just north of London at the moment, but from deepest Suffolk in East Anglia.

Was it just a lucky coincidence that your sister is getting married the next day?  I see from previous posts that you're currently in Japan...

Never seen MMJ live before.  Getting more excited by the prospect the closer we get, some of the stuff in the live archive is amazing...

I'm a newbie on the board and fairly new to the band.  I haven't yet seen them live but I had a ticket for the cancelled Birmingham gig.  My problem is I'm worried I might not be able to make the rescheduled gig so should I book a ticket for the London gig (before they sell out) with the possibility that I might end up going to both gigs rather than none.

I guess my question is are they the kind of live band that you could watch night after night and never tire of or will it take away from the experience seeing them twice in quick succession?

I think I already know the answer but I wanted to put it to the pro's.

Anyway nice to meet you all.

Oh and dragOnbOy the name PomPomPom was just the first thing I thought of when I registered.  The reason behind it is that 'Lowdown' from Bonnaroo 2003 was the first MMJ song that ever made me shiver in delight (and started my obsession with the band) and it was the bit before the verse that just got me.  I don't know even what Jim is singing but it always sounded like "Pom Pom Pom" to me so hence the name...  Can anyone shed any light on what the lyrics are for that bit?

PomPomPom,

I saw them at Edinburgh on Saturday and if I could have gone back again on Sunday I would have jumped at the chance. The buss lasted for days. I'm going to the Astoria gig and am struggling to last nearly a month without seeing the guys live.

I just hope that things go OK for them during this tragic and difficult time. Hopefully getting back on the road will be the best therapy.

London's Astoria15,000 Join The Fight To Save London's Astoria
Posted: August 29, 2006
LONDON (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) -- London music fans have banded together to fight the possible closure of one of the city's most legendary clubs, collecting more than 15,000 signatures on a public petition.
The historic Astoria in Soho is part of a block slated to be converted into flats and shops, after being sold for £23.75 million by Compco Holdings to Derwent Valley.

The 2,000-capacity club has hosted the Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Oasis and Blur as they ascended to superstardom. Modern alternative acts Arctic Monkeys, Primal Scream, the Streets and Wolfmother have all played the venue within the past 12 months.

The Astoria is currently under lease to Live Nation-owned Mean Fiddler until 2008, but the company claims it is powerless to stop any redevelopment of the venue.

"It's a great venue, with its capacity and history. A lot of very cool bands have played there in the past. People attach themselves emotionally to music and I'm sure they have the same affinity with venues," Live Nation's Christine Gorman told The Guardian.

"We have a long-term lease with them and we are very happy to operate from there and work with the owners of the actual building. We have no say as to what their plans are. Our aim is to provide the best possible entertainment for the consumer. We can't get involved in other areas, especially when we are not the ones making the ultimate decision."

The venue also hosts the city's best-known gay club night, G-A-Y, which has hosted performances by pop acts including Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Gloria Gaynor, the Spice Girls and Christina Aguilera. --by CelebrityAccess Staff Writers

Yer they've been threatening to close it down for years for one reason or another. Looks like it might really happen this time though. I hope not, hands down my fav venue in London. I saw Nirvana there (with Mudhoney) NIN, Janes Addiction, Tool, RATM & countless others...

Yer I was lucky enough to see the infamous Mudhoney, Nirvana, Tad show in...I think it was '89?
I wish I had kept all of my tickets, I can't remember half the concerts I've been to. Living so close to London (Reading) my friends & I went up a couple of times a month. I didn't realise how lucky I was until I moved to Japan...

Whoo-hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!

After seeing Jim at that tiny gig in Camden last year, i've been really looking forward to seeing the whole band. It should be a hell of a night. The setlists are looking pretty cool as well. As long as they play The Bear at the Astoria, I'll be a very happy man.

By the way, the Tottenham pub normally gets really busy when there is a gig on at the Astoria. We went there before the 22-20s last year and could hardly move!

As vatro mentioned, 3 dudes flying from Croatia to concert. We are deciding which hostel we're gonna take.
We narrowed choices to few, which are located on those locations:

 - 27 Montague Street, Bloomsbury
- 45 Queensborough Terrace, Bayswater
- 229 Great Portland Street, W1W 5PN
- 7-12 Leinster Square, Bayswater W2 4PP
- 12 Sherwood Street, Piccadilly, W1F 7BR
- 24 Ladbroke road, Notting Hill

So, obvious question. Which one is the closest to Astoria?

Thnx for help. See you all at Tottenham pub  ;)

CC's right. The Bloomsbury one's the closest. Look at this map. The Astoria is circled, and you can see Montague Street just above the British Museum.

I'm the third guy from Croatia and I have a question too.

We (Vatro, Frank and me) are part-time journalists.
Who do we have to ask for a photo acreditation.? I suppose that we will  not be  allowed to take a camera inside the Astoria.

We sent an e- mail to the contact that we found on the Astoria site, but we did not get an answer.

Maybe we must contact the organiser of the concert???

Hey everyone, I'm heading down from Scotland - does that increase the globalisation of our MMJ virtual village?  Was lucky enough to snag a ticket the day before their recent Edinburgh show and while I'm generally quite circumspect about forum gushing, I can honestly say it was as close to a religious experience as I've had!

Nothing could prepare me for just how powerful Jim's voice was live and despite only beng familiar with Tennesse Fire beforehand it was a breathtaking night for me from start to finish - so refreshing to see a band feed off a great crowd and perform like it really means something to them.

Seeing them for the first time in such a cosy venue felt like a true privilidge, at times during newer songs like Anytime and Wht a wonderful man it felt like witnessing the Who doing Won't Get Fooled Again in my front room!  I also liked the fact that Jim broke a lenghty silence with a joyful welcome and took the opportunity to rap the greedy promoters for the scandalous practice of putting gigs second to club nights which inevitably force an earlier finish  - all too evident in Edinburgh, but elsewhere in the Uk too.

Wasn't Jim James the name of a waco-type cult leader from the 70s?  Truly the messiah is resurrected!

As a Londoner I can confirm that Bloomsbury and Piccadilly are both walkable to Astoria.

Any word yet re support and expected stage times?

See y'all down the ffront, fingers tightly crossed for Lowdown, Golden, Old Sept Blues, Mahgeetah and the Way That He Sings (possibly the most appropriate songtitle ever?)

So, is everyone here going to that Tottenham pub before the concert? I'll probably have to talk my friend into going there before the show. Would be great to get to talk to someone with the same passion for MMJ as me for once.

People back here in Norway are getting sick of listening to me going on about MMJ all the time. Played a gig with my band today, and I asked if I could wear a MMJ-shirt on stage, and they all said "Again???!!"...  ;D

Finally I have my new passport.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I still can't believe that we are going to London to see MMJ!!!

PJ and MMJ are my favorite bands and when I've heard that they are playing together across Europe I was afraid to open the show page on the website.

I was very excited when I realized that PJ will play in Zagreb (haven't seen them since Salzburg and Ljubljana in 2001), but then a disappointment followed: MMJ will not be with them here! So I started planning Italy or something else close and convenient.

Then another frustration: my boss won't let me go.
:-/

Finally Vatroslav called and said: Let's go see MMJ in London. We don't need visas anymore and there are cheap flights.

So, it is going to be MMJ in London on the weekend of 22rd, then PJ on 26th in Zagreb (special concert without a support band; there are rumors that they will play a pre acoustic set).

And if M Ward should play again in Zagreb or Band of Horses perhaps comes anywhere near it will be the best concert year of my life.

Jim James is our Elvis!

The flight is the only part that I'm not looking forward to.
There are no direct flights from Nagoya to Heathrow so we have to transit in Seoul. The whole thing door to door (hotel) is 24hrs +  :P :P :P
My wife can sleep on the plane but I can't, which makes it even worse.

I nearly gave the game away last night. I suggested to my wife that she pack her WM3 T-shirt, she asked why & I replied 'for the gig'!

Anyone know the showtimes?

Just as a warning, I've been to a gig at the Astoria before when the headliner was on VERY EARLY, like, 8.00PM.  Loads of people were turning up at 9PM and some were in floods of tears cos they'd pretty much missed the whole gig.

So I say:  unless someone knows what time MMJ are on,  ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME!

Yes there is an early curfew at the Astoria on  a Friday so get there early to avoid disappointment. I'd guess 7.15 for David Dondero and 8.00pm for My Morning Jacket just to be on the safe side.

Thanks guys

Nice as it is to drink in a London boozer, I'd sure hate to miss a second of the Jacket...

I'm going insane with excitement.  I've had to calm myself down with large doses of single malt.  On a Tuesday night.  ???

For the folks who can meet at the Tottenham, how about a 6:00  PM start time for a quick pint?

The year is 2011......

Tuesday afternoon on the forum.....

New Forum User : Hey everybody, I'm new here.  I just got turned on to this band and I can't get enough of them.  They make me want to hug strangers and punch the wall all during the same song.  How can one group of five guys be this good.  Anyway, I was wanting to download some live shows and I was hoping someone could make some suggestions on a few good ones that stand out.  Thanks in advance.

XBermudaXHitchhikerX:  Dude you gotta check out Astoria '06.  Following is a list of former board members that were actually there, but unfortunately they are no longer with us.  They all had their brains melted and rose straight to heaven during the encore.

New poster to the board, though I've referenced it for information many times.

I live in San Francisco, but extended my stay in London until Saturday when I found out MMJ is here (I've been to every MMY Fillmore show and will be looking for myself on the DVD on Halloween).

HOWEVER... I can't find a ticket to save my life. Even had the hotel concierge working on it for two days straight.

I'm willing to do roughly anything. Anybody have a source, or god forbid an extra? It's worth a considerable amount to me in cash and pints.

Thanks so much. And if it doesn't work out, those of you who are going -- please have a hell of a show.

pagoda, app there's a meetup before the show at  'Tottenham Pub Next to the McDonalds and outside Tottenham Court Road Tube Station'.

i think riny's going.  maybe if you go and intro yourself to him good things will happen. *

* sorry riny - not sure how else to get this person's name as i won't be online much longer today.

**  also, to avoid pagoda impersonators maybe you better show some sf id, too!

crap, maybe i shouldn't have posted this but i didn't know if he/she would get a private message.

You'll be able to buy from a tout outside...will probably cost you about £30.00. well worth it i'd say!!!

good luck

I have a horrible feeling the show is going to be real short this evening. I'm terrified that it will be. The club night starts at 10.30 and im not sure when the band are due on. Anyone have any idea?

Hi Pagoda,

Should be a great show!  Not long now...

Thanks to everyone -- and especially growl -- for the help and advice.

Chalk me up as another pond-crosser able to see the show.

Will probably catch a few warm up pints at the tottenham... look for a typically confused-looking american about six and a half feet tall.

I am new to this board.  I am deperate for a ticket for tonight's gig.  Seen them several times here, and was gutted when they cancelled their last UK shows.  Was supposed to be on holiday today but not going any more (as from today).

Does anyone have a spare to sell?

Apologies if this has been discussed and no-one has any left.

If not i will have to buy one from a tout.
