Holy Shit, just drove 3 hours home from the dirty south, was it ever worth it.. I've been going to shows for 17 years and i have never, ever seen anything like the Jacket at the Tabernacle. These guys are the greatest fucking band in the world. I don't know what else to say. Can't think, mind is numb

Well, I'm blown away...  And still kickin' myself for missin' the Roxy show last time...  I was floored by how the band would huddle around the drummer and play off each other.  Those dudes epitomize "band" or "group"  Not to mention, it was my birthday, and we had designer drugs, and front row balcony seats.  Pictures to follow soon....
I still sport wood!!!
Religious....
I saw god and he plays a Flyin' V guitar.

Just got back from the MMJ show at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. It was the first time I have seen MMJ live. We enjoyed the band's performance, however it was the WORST sound I had ever heard at a concert. We were sitting in the balcony in the second row. The sound started off bad then just got progressively worse. By the time "One Big Holiday" was played it had deteriorated to the point of shrieking feedback combined with white noise. I have seen many shows at the Tabernacle since it opened for concerts during the Olympics in 1996. Something is very wrong when a band the caliber of MMJ has such a horrible PA.

Wow...I couldn't disagree more.  I was also in the middle balcony and I thought it sounded great.  Are you sure that "white noise" wasn't your eardrum wonderng where the exit doors were?   ;)

I've seen MMJ several times and I felt this was the best venue I've ever seen them in.  I'm a huge fan of the Tabernacle in general, but rarely is a venue as great of a match for a band than the T is for MMJ.

Few bands can fill up that room with those high ceilings the way they did last night.

Look, The Tabernacle is known for havng difficult acoustics.  It is a fabulously cool venue but it is an old church and not really designed for loud rock shows.  It would be nice if they installed huge cushy baffles over the big stained glass windows instead if black  curtains, I think it would help.  MMJ uses alot of synth and reverb and those sounds kinda blend together in a large space. Jim made note of it when he was talking about their soundcheck sounding like a huge roar, Then comparing it to the roar of the fans.  The show was WAY louder than typical shows there.  The mix was poor with the drums being too low and the keys being overbearing.. That being said....  I've seen 75 live shows this year.  DBT, Ben Harper, Ween, Primus, YeahYeahYeahs, Gnarls Barkley, Govt. Mule, Crowes, Beck, ect...

MMJ was the Show of the Year!!!

We'll all see how fabulous it was when the torrent shows!  I betcha I think it sounds great.

I was up front by the stage, and even I noted how bad the sound was. Alan was beside me, and our two buddies were on the balcony, and all seemed to agree that it was straight-up ugly sounding at that venue.

At times, it was so loud that alot of the songs just got lost in noise... the drums were the only things you could really pick apart from the static. Even when they weren't playing, the sound was just sucky... I had a hard time understanding Jim when he spoke and I was fucking 3 ft away from him.

Bottom line is that the Tabernacle looks cool, but out of the handful of jacket shows this one ranks as the worst in terms of the sound. And I've been to Sloss Furnace.

Looks aside, the Roxy pwns this place. The vibe was good, though... we got crunk up front and the band appreciated us.

+ Patrick did his dance routine during Run Thru

+ There was a towel fight amongst the band... Bo tossed a towel at Patrick, Patrick tossed it back, Bo tossed it back, Patrick threw some drum sticks at Bo, then threw the towel onto Tommy, Tommy threw it onto Bo - eventually it ended up on Jim's head.

+ Jim cuddled a stuffed mammoth.

+ They Ran was given a redux treatment similar to the way Dondante was jazzed up.

+ I didn't get a chance to check out the merch, but I saw a fan with a t-shirt, and it was pretty fucking cool... so that's something for folks to look forward to.

+ There was a taper present. He was taping from the center of the balcony, I believe.

The important question is, Did you do it with him? :)

I couldn't, but I made sure to raise an appreciative fist in Patrick's direction... unfortunately, I had to keep a grip on my jacket for alot of the show... I had accidentally brought my iPod with me in a side pocket and wasn't going to risk draping it over the barrier.

The Ryman is going to kick ass. Better sound, and a seat to keep my crap in.

I agree....sound was bad but the show was still great.  One problem I had was I couldn't hear Carl's guitar very well, which sucked.  I have seen MMJ live before but had never seen them play XMAS CURTAIN....it was great but without being able to hear Carl slide that guitar it kinda blew.
Still a sweet show.
I enjoyed the Roxy concert better though.  MMJ is getting way more popular..  I noticed that everyone sang along with the songs off of Z and ISM but when songs from AD or TTF came up people just kinda nodded their heads.  These people better come to their senses and head to the record store.

I'll preface this by announcing that I don't know whether or not Jim is married.

i was right in front of carl and i didn't have any problem at all, i agree that late 1st set the bass was very boomy, but then i don't go to shows to be an audiophile, that's what high dollar stereo equipment is for, i've attended shows, played shows, sometimes the finest audio just can't be had, but IMHO it's all about the magic and last night was 5 guys at the TOP of their game,  melting faces and bending minds, i sure as hell didn't feel that any of the jacket nation down front and center wasn't get their skulls fucked all night long, this was my 3rd jacket show and my first PWW, which was absolutely incredible,Lay Low though (which is not one of my favs) absolutely fucking rocked, anybody that didn't enjoy the show, i'm so so sorry....but if you didn't get off on that, you should really check your pulse

QuoteWhich version of Dondante have they been playing?

They played the normal one at Knoxville.  Although, they did rock it out a little more than normal.  I think there was like 2 more minutes of guitar soloing.

Post by: ellisintransit on Nov 13, 2006, 03:35 PM
ATL was a regular version of Dondante......

No one has mentioned Easy Mornin Rebel....

Sweet lord.....they sent me into outerspace with how hard they were rockin that song.  Also, being in the middle of that crowd was a lot of fun.  A whole lot of people rocking their balls off.  Regardless of the sound issues, which honestly didn't bug me that much except when the acoustic was cutting out at the beginning of It Beats 4U, the boys were on fire.

Nashville tonight!  Whaaa!  Let's do it again.

This was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I was front row in front of Jim and we waited after the show by the tour bus and I met him!!! He was so down to earth. He gave me his autograph and shook my hand. It was one of the best experiences I've ever had.

That was a damn fine show last night.  I've seen them the last two times they've been to the Roxy and at the 40 Watt in Athens two summers ago and they have come a long way in terms of their equip, lights, etc.  I thought they blew the doors off the place last night.  Every one in the group I was with last night - probably 12 people total - thought that's one of the best shows they've seen in a long time.

As for the sound, any small place where a band plays as loud as they do, it's gonna get muddy at times.  I could hear Carl pretty well.   I could hear all of them pretty well for that matter.   I was about 6 rows up in the left center of the first balcony.  There was a taper front center of the first balcony so I'm sure a recording will be out soon.  Jim's guitar(solo's) is super loud - i.e. Dondante and Off the Record.  By the way, I like the way the finish Off the Record now - at least the way they played it last night - basically the spacey jam with Jim ripping over it..  Anyway, sure the sound can be better but when they're all playing as loud as they do, there's only so much you can do to get the sound to blend right.  I thought the sound was worse the last show at the Roxy to be honest with you.   There was a point at the beggining of the show where I had to turn away because Carl was so loud it was actually hurting my ears.  I think it's time to start wearing ear plugs to shows with the ringing I've got in my head today.

I could have sworn I read in an interview a while back - I think around the time Z came out that they were gonna stop playing certain songs - Phone Went West in partcular.  I'm glad they ixnayed that idea.  Great to hear By My Car too.  I love that song.

damn, i'm losing credibility because we differ on favorite songs?? i said the song melted my brain, WTF... maybe last night will lead me to a saner path and i will gain some cred... and yes ellis EZ Rebel was one of many many highlights, after the bashing i took from PWW, Lay Low, and Dondante, i think i was spongeing up some gray matter off the floor to dump back into my skull

he plays big but he's not actually that big.  maybe 5'9".

I'm loving the songs they're bringing back.  Easy Morning Rebel, They Ran, Rollin Back, Honest Man, The Bear.  That's fucking sweet!

this was my 6th Jacket show (i drove 5.5 hrs from Louisville to see it) and i would consider it my second best next Bonnaroo '06!  the set list was great, the boyz energy is as high as ever and man the Tabernacle crowd was going ape shit!  they brought the house down.

if you walked away from that show and didn't feel like you just saw and heard the BEST live band in the world, then "i'll kick, i'll kick [your] head in..."

highlights for us hardcore Jacket fans:
 - opened with At Dawn (which is a good change from WC)
 - busted out Easy Morning Rebel and Phone Went West!!!
 - played They Ran AND By My Car
 - and when they played Steam Engine i pretty much went ape shit and acted like a 12 yr old girl at a Britney Spears concert

i noticed someone else mentioned on here about a lot of newbie fans.  i didn't come on the Jacket bandwagon until 2003 with ISM, but by God i have educated myself on the Jacket and have pretty much every piece of material i can get my hands on.  i felt like me and about 50 other people were the only ones able to sing to the songs from At Dawn and TN Fire...which was the HIGHLIGHT of the show for me is hearing old stuff...it was such a good show.

about the sound.  i didn't think it was as awful as other people have said, but i'm also not a sound guru.  it definitely wasn't the best sounding Jacket show, but who cares?  i think one reason we all love this band so much is b/c they aren't perfect and don't try to be.  dirrrty sound at a Jacket show seems somehow comforting.  i wouldn't want their live sound to be as clean as Z.

Jim was definitely feeding off the crowd.  he commented several times how good the crowd was.  and it was true.  that was a really good crowd.  almost everyone at the venue was rocking pretty hard whether they knew the songs or not.  Jim was saying some pretty funny things too, though it was hard to hear him.  he talked about renting a car in Knoxville and staying an extra day because he loved the Sun Sphere so much (isn't that what that the thing is called they built for the World's Fair??).  he also was talking about this building in ATL that is kind of open at the top and he hoped somebody had connection with the city council so they could get him a tour of the building.  good stuff.

as an added bonus driving down to ATL from Kentucky i passed the Tennessee Fireworks store where they took the picture for the inside cover of the Tennessee Fire!!!

we were trying to figure out on the way out last night, exactly which building jim was talking about, 'matchsticks'? i'm thinking maybe jim had some dirty south chronic on his ride down. all good though. there were 2 dudes: one with a doo rag and a flannel shirt, one blonde dude with a blue shirt, they were close to center stage about 4 back with a lovely redhead, hitting a bowl, i just want to thank them for rocking the fuck out with me all night long and wish them many more nights as great as last night

Alan's photography is better than some of the pro-photographers' work... and he doesn't even have a press-pass or fancy lenses or anything like that.
