Those traveling make sure u,
1) Go on a R.E.M. historical site tour. look them up on the net.
2) dreamlandbbq.com I understand, 'Dreamland' bbq is considered some of the BEST bbq in the nation. There is a location about 15 miles outside of Athens.

Dreamland BBQ is amazing! We've made special stops in Birmingham on our way to New Orleans twice just to eat there. Yeah, do that :-).

you dont have to go that far...check out Weaver D's or Plantation House ...oh and if you want to go on a REM tour.....just walk around what use to be called"Normaltown" and there you have it...those boys have been buying up most of that area for years
What about record stores? I played a show in Athens in 2000, but haven't been back since. I went to a record store, near the 40 Watt I think, and I'm pretty sure it was Kindercore, and if not, had some affiliation with the record label of the same name (which I think is defunct as well). Picked up a kickass Mogwai remix cd there.
Is that still around? Is it the best in Athens? If not, where would I find such record store awesomeness. Preferably a place with Vinyl. I can't wait to go back and especially can't wait for the kick-ass-ness that is about to be recieved. Hehe.
I'm wondering the same thing...as a vinyl junkie, where's the best place to get my fix in Athens? From the net it seems that Wuxtry Records and Schoolkids Records are a couple of highly recommended stores to flip through some vinyl. Are there any other records stores that I must visit?
Totally juiced for MMJ at the 40watt and this will be my first trip to Athens. In ATL there are a couple of decent record stores like Criminal Records and Wax n Facts in L5P.
peace.
PS if you guys love Dreamland BBQ, you MUST go to the original locale in Tuscaloosa. Ain't nothin' like it nowhere!
I would skip any Dreamland other than Tuscaloosa, AL. Every other one I've been to has been weak at best. DL in Tuscaloosa is the best though; just ribs, white bread and small bags of potato chips... and beer of course.
The record store you're thinking of is now called School Kid's Records. I'm having a brain fart right now on the old name, but it has also moved from the orignal location.

If you're looking for a good place for stiff and CHEAP liqour drinks I recomend hitting up the Roadhouse next to Little Italy on Lumpkin. Their clock is generally 15 minutes slower than anyone else, so you can slide in for one last drink as the other bars are kicking you out.
great tips kids!
keep 'em comin'!
now, where does a girl go for a quality cuppa joe in athens? dark roast, don'tchewknow.
I plan on reffering back to these threads in the near future. Bring it on "Dreamland BBQ" yum, yum, yum.

YES! thank you for this key information! two awesomely named shops. brilliant! :D
Both Steverino's and Son's of Italy are around the corner from MeanBean/Jittery Joe's. They are pretty cheap and decent beer prices.
There is also a kabob place that kicks considerable ass. It used to be called Achim's K-bobs, but it had changed the name last time I was up there. There is one by five points and one downtown on Broad near Tasty World. It has a blue sign with yellow writing.
Maybe I smoke crack, but I swear when I was up there in the fall it had changed. Anyway, it's worth checking out. Killer fries.

Holy Crap! I almost forgot about JB's. Since the show is at the 40watt you are all REQUIRED to get a polish sausage from JB outside. Get the onions and his special "comeback sauce." You won't regret it, until the next morning. ;D
Oh Snap!! I had one of those sausages, I had just had my mind blown to pieces and then I ate one of those things right outside the 40wt. and it was the best thing I have ever eaten in my entire life. Thank you for reminding me........and thank you to my wife for standing in line with me. The guys sevrving that shit up were Highlarious.

Just wanted to update this a bit. Kinda sad b/c I wish it was still as you described it. Son's of Italy is moving and is no longer in that hut near Five Points (in the middle of moving so it doesn't exist right now). Steverino's is still there, and they just put some new stuff on the inside from what I hear. Definitely a great spot, with good greasy food and cheap beer.
Achim's K-bobs is one of my faves too. Its now called Uncle Otto's, but the good news is its still the same stuff and is actually nicer on the inside. The last couple times I've been in there, they were playing concert DVDs on a flat screen so that was cool. But the one near Five Points is not there anymore; its now an outdoor cuban restaurant (great food though).
Hope that clears things up. I know this was a long post to talk about two Athens restaurants, but food is kind of a big deal around here.
Thanks. I haven't been up there as often and it gets hard keeping track. I can't wait to hit up JB's.

So where's the preshow meeting spot? I'm not sitting in a space alligator costume in a bar alone...

I was wondering the same thing...A good spot would be the Ga Bar or the Globe...Hopefully we can all get togther and talk and have a few...Should I bring name tags or should we make our own..hmmmm...

That all depends on what kind of drunk you want to get. Manhatan's is around the corner. I believe they have PBR tallboys and decent beers. They seem to have a like minded clientele.
Georgia Bar is fairly cool. Personally I'd skip the Globe entirely. El Centro used to pull the Panic stoner/cokehead crowd.
If you want to pound Maker's Mark you can meet me at the Roadhouse. I'll be there Wednesday wearing my purple tuxedo jacket.

If you guys really want to GREASE up , then hit the Varsity at the corner of Milledge and Broad...holy chili dogs ;D ;D ;D
JB destroys the Varsity. And I grew up here in ATL.
meet me by the bike racks behind the school. i'll be drinking veuve clicquot out of a paper bag and wearing a tiara. [smiley=beer.gif]

sweet! the last time I was in the roadhouse I felt a little out of place...either that or I'm about ten tears older than everyone else....ok maybe 15 years :(

Makes me think of the Indigo Girls song about the south in the spring.
What a Spring break, kids.

So is it Manhattan? I like my PBR.
Don't go to Dreamland. If you want good bbq, go to Jot 'Em Down. It's so ridiculously good. It's the only bbq place I frequent. And when I say frequent, I mean all the time.
other places to check out:
Bars -- The Manhattan, The Globe, Flicker Bar, Farm 255. all of those are near the 40 Watt.
Restaurants -- Farm 255 (organic), Clocked (diner burgers), Weaver D's (soul food and a must stop for R.E.M. history tour. Automatic for the people!), Jot Em Down (bbq), The Grit (vegetarian place, i think partly owned by Stipe), Cali N Tito's (cuban/peruvian place with the most insanely good Cuban sandwich), Agua Linda (awesome mexican) and after the show, when you walk out don't forget to look left to see J.B.'s hotdog stand and his world famous Comeback sauce.
record stores -- Wuxtry for vinyl. Schoolkids is good too. both are known for having local musicians working.
