Title: Cobra?  why not?
Post by: d59gibson on Mar 12, 2007, 12:37 AM
Why do they not ever play the song cobra at shows?  I want answers besides the fact that the song is 25 mins. long.  Seriously, I always request this song, they never play it.

Yeah it should.  Another song that I enjoy that I still have yet to see them play is Tyrone.  That might be a stretch though.  Anyone ever see them play it?

I saw them play it one time on the waterfront as part of world fest in the summer of 2000.  It was awesome! I took me a long time to figure out what the song was and track down a copy of it (though not from that show).  I kept on asking people, "what's the song where he says 'Jim James?'"

That was hilarious because it was literally the band's families and girlfriends, dan reed from wfpk, and two fans.  Seriously, two people up and dancing. Here's a pic from the gallery (I'm the one wearing the tan hat and blues traveller shirt and all the old people in front of me are the olliges/quaid and blankenship families (man, i miss my long hair!):

Does anyone know if they have ever in the history of live shows, played that last part of Cobra with the banjo?    Now THAT would be special!!  Sometimes, I think the first part is only just one big setup for the beautiful last section.

I guess that's all we are going to get from you Dylan!  You are like Wilson on Tool Time!  ;)

Saw them play Cobra at the final show in Denver. My special lady friend and I were front row center as Jim twirled his six shooters and struck Charlie's Angel poses. It was great, and lasted more like 15 minutes, not 8. They played three parts of it, so most of the song, which was very much enough to be satisfied. :) I managed to record about 3 minutes of it, which I will try to post soon.

Hilarious!  Thanks, Brian, I needed a good laugh.

To answer the question though, back in those days when it was just friends and family coming to see them, the family would usually remain seated and I didn't really want to stand in front of them.  Obviously, things quickly changed though.  The first time I saw them at headliners there was NO ONE on the dancefloor, everyone was seated at the tables back by the bar and there were probably 40 people there.  Two or three years later they sold the place out twice, the tables were removed completely, and getting on the dancefloor took some dedication.

yeah..thats a great story Dylan.  it looks like they were rocking out as much as they do now!

i envy you getting to see the band from its infancy all the way up to the present "glory days"...i'm sure you feel like a proud papa.  looking back i hate my 18 yr old self for deciding to go to college in Lexington, KY instead of L'ville!  I would have been in the 'Ville for the "early days."

stupid 18 yr old Curtis....

Cobra is just under 8 minutes.  No feedback or banjo sections, just the normal live arangement.  DAMN that tune smokes live.
