Spoon triumph through the rain at Lollapalooza
Patti Smith and My Morning Jacket man play for the kiddies
Sudden rain didn't dampen Spoon's spirits at Lollapalooza tonight.
Frontman Britt Daniel put his band through the paces, playing several tracks from their new album 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga', as well as old favourites such as 'I Turn My Camera On', which got the rain-soaked audience dancing.
"Did you see LCD Soundsystem here last night?" Daniel asked the crowd. "Amazing."
Earlier in the day before the rain arrived, punk legend Patti Smith preceded her official Lollapalooza set with a surprise appearance at the Kidzapalooza stage, where she performed for the kiddies and their hipster parents.
Also making an appearance at the Kidzapalooza stage today was My Morning Jacket main man Jim James, who performed a moving set with his acoustic guitar.
"'The Rainbow Connection' brought tears to my eyes," drummer Patrick Hallahan told NME.COM after his bandmate played the song made famous by The Muppets.
My Morning Jacket are set to perform their main Lollapalooza set tomorrow evening.
Stay tuned to NME.COM for updates on all the Lollapalooza action throughout the weekend.

Farrell talking about bio-diesel and Smith singing "People Have the Power" may have gone over the heads of some in the audience, but James brought it back to more traditional fare with covers of "The Rainbow Connection" and the Chipmunks' "It's Christmas Time."
What a great story, thanks for posting Laurie! :)
I wonder if Jernigan & his kids caught this?
This is great! ;D We were so close to going in there. I hope Jernigan caught that too.
Unfortunately no, I had no idea, and had no money to be able to
go to all three days.
I'm actually furious that I missed it.......but what can you do? The kids
would have loved it.
However, unlike last year, we're opting for a baby-sitter tonight, as my
wife and I have not had a night out, since we moved to this state in the
summer of 2005.
So our first date in years, will be MMJ & PJ.....with the beautiful Chicago
skyline as a back drop.
Not a bad start.....
Take care guys,
-MJ
that's great! I hope a recording surfaces of this!
fortunately, you can see the kidz stage without going in.

3:11 p.m.: Attendance at the Kidzapalooza stage swells as rumors of a "special guest" circulate. My Morning Jacket's Jim James is the first surprise. The bearded singer strums a banjo for an ultra-sincere Alvin and the Chipmunks cover before offering up a heartbreaking version of "The Rainbow Connection." "I don't know if [organizers] expected me to get all the kids jumping," says James backstage. "But that's really not my style." The singer also confirms that My Morning Jacket will be joined by the 18-piece Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra for its Sunday performance. "We rehearsed yesterday and it's going to be awesome," he says. "We've got a whole theme going. I think people will be surprised."
SHIT!
Jim playing "The Rainbow Connection"?!?!?!?!?!
I doubt many tapers would show up at the kids stage, especially if Jim wasn't announced. I guess we can all keep our fingers crossed.
Corey
As Patrick said.....after having watched that.....and had I been there
with my children....I probably would have shed a tear or two as well.
:'(
Off to the train station ya'll.....I'll post the vids and pics
I may or may not get this afternoon....I highly doubt I
will be able to get as close as I did last year.
Wish me luck, and I'll sing my ass off, and have a beer
for those not in attendance.
Cheers,
-MJ

Audio rips anyone?
Looks like the covers comp needs some updating (maybe more more after tonight) :D
EDIT: My research shows that the name of the song is actually The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late) for those keeping score at home).

the best i think we'll be able to do is get audio rips of the video files on youtube. I don't know how or I would have done it. Hopefully someone with the know-how will hook us up. but as corey said, it's probably a long shot that a taper was there.

unfortunately, 'rainbow' is the only one of the 2 jim did on the kidz stage that we were able to film. we did film (on tripod) the screens during the main set, though. it'll have people walking around. i'm hoping someone got audio. i know a few tapers were there and will ask around.
yeah...im a pearl jam fan. we travel far and wide for that band! i'm really glad the mmj were at lolla. they're fantastic! i was disappointed that their name wasn't on the webcast or xm list!
Thanks fer all dat fancy convertin' and shit peeps!
Covers Disc #5 is getting filled up quick!
here is a lossless version of 'rainbow connection' taken straight from the video tape.

rainman, that's just lovely. Pristine. Thanks so much.
I've had this song on repeat for about the last 15 minutes or so, and Edward, a friend of my roommate's just wandered into my room - "Who is that?!" Love it love it when that happens:)
I vaguely remember the Muppets, but they were not a huge part of my childhood. I've heard Willie Nelson's and Sarah McLaughlin's covers of this song and I appreciate them, but they never really stuck. Leave it to Jim's lovely, liliting voice to completely reinvent this song for me.
And I love this recording - the guy about 2:30 in going, "This is a good song." A bit dumbfounded, like he wasn't expecting anything special, only to find himself sucker-punched by the "all of us under its spell" part. He regains the power of speech in the next verse and comes up with "This is a good song." I hear ya. Sitting at my desk a thousand miles away I was thinking the same thing. Lovely. Loverly.
Thanks again to all of y'all offering up these recordings.
