Hey guys, just got back from Austin this morning and I didn't see the set list up yet, so here it is in order:
Mahgeetah
What a Wonderful Man
Off the Record
Gideon (Andrew Bird came out here)
Wordless Chorus
Sooner
Golden
Phone Went West
Lay Low
One Big Holiday
Anytime
I'll write up a post about the whole weekend soon, but I'm running on empty at this point and it's taken me 15 minutes just to write this!
And the boys brought it
no new songs. :-/
Quoteno new songs. :-/
does this make you anticipate the album release date being later than you expected?

Didn't expect them to. It doesn't sound like they've been in the studio since Lolla, so I don't think the songs will be more developed now than they were then.

No, Jim has said they went into the studio with more than 20 songs, so unless he's lying there ARE new songs, they're just not playing them publicly for whatever reason. I'm not sure what to make of that, but whatever the reason, I know I'd love to hear some new stuff!
I'm trying to remember, have they played a new song with the whole band, or just Jim solo.
QuoteGideon (Andrew Bird came out here)
Did anyone see Mr. Bird's new facial hair? I think the boys are rubbing off on him!

Just Jim solo.
Wonderful (The Way I Feel)
unknown? Played at the Rud
they always play:
Wordless, Gideon, What A wonderful, Off the Record, Lay low, Anytime, Golden and OBH ---not that im complaining but...
Do you think this will change on their next tour? will they use less Z songs and transfer in more At Dawn/ISM songs instead? or will, Wordless, Gideon, What A wonderful, Off the Record, Lay low, Anytime always be in every set?
PS. have they ever closed with OBH? I like them opening up Mahgettah too...great opener.
they obviously will play mostly songs from the new record as they did on the "Z" tour...
i assume after that they will mix in staples from Z, ISM, At Dawn, and TN Fire...doubt there will be much room for rarities though. the more albums they release the less chance they will play rare songs....sad, but true? but if they play fewer songs from past albums, then more songs become "rarities" live, right?
the time i would think to catch rarities would be at extended Festival sets (ala 'Roo '06) and the tour after the tour behind the album!
The more their discography grows, the more their setlist will diversify. It just takes time. I look at Pearl Jam as a good example
I wonder that if playin old stuff doesn't feel right cause it wasn't the same band making the music. So they play more Z because thats the music THIS band created, and they will continue to play Z...forever and ever and ever. Or maybe they're just not as tight playing Phone Went West as they are on Off The Record...
Side note: i cant wait for my next MMJ new years show. I'll get to hear stangulation, come closer, master plan, some crazy ass cover AND nashville to kentucky (acoustic) all in one night.
It would make sense if the band felt like they needed to be playing songs that were more recognizable to the general audience at this point (i.e. stuff off "It Still Moves" and "Z") because they are trying to grow a fan base, and many of the new fans have only heard those two records. Which is why I'm pulling for a "Return To The Planitarium..SHOW" - just for the forum members :), and they can play all the obscure stuff and we can all have group sex after the show while Jim plays "Come Closer" It's going to be great.
