Post by: Kory on May 02, 2007, 10:21 PM
A celebration of the Rud's greatness!
Jim calls the Rud "Louisville's Ryman Auditorium"... Get to Louisville folks, the Rud is small!

When tickets do go on sale, whats the best way for an out of towner to buy them? Do they use Ticketmaster?

I'm not even sure yet jeffro, I'd assume ticketweb over ticketmaster. They do alot of small venue, big band stuff for the city. I emailed the Rud owners and will see what they say. I'll post back with an answer.

I just got off the phone with a girl from the Rudyard. I asked her about when tickets go on sale and what not. She told me its up to the individual artist as to if they want to sell presale tickets and that if I wanted I could make reservations for dinner and the show and pay at the door that night. All you locals does this sound right? I went ahead and made reservations. Thanks!

Anyone from out of town that hasn't been to the Rud and wants to see just how small it really is can check out our post about a band we saw last night called Murals, there is a link to pictures.
I highly advise checking them out as well.

The ear X-tacy web page states that all ticket sales are cash only.  That seems to mean that I'm out of luck as an out-of-towner.  Any more info would be great.

Tickets go on sale 10am saturday at Ear Xtacy.  Cash only.  VERY limited number of seats.

I want to come to this show from out-of-state. Is there any incredible person who would let me send them money for two tickets through Pay Pal or check and buy them for me when they go get theirs at ear-x-tacy? I could add some extra $ for you being the most awesome person in the world! ???
I'm coming all the way from TX if I can get two tix, or even just one, so I'd really appreciate any replies!!!! Gotta figure it out and snap up a plane ticket while it's still affordable.
Thanks guys!!!

hey jeffro-
i'm sure you've figured this out since the ear-xtacy ticket posting, but apparently this is the one show where they won't be taking reservations. the ONLY way to get a ticket is to buy it with cash from the record store. sucks for us out-of-towners! :(
Title: Re: Jim James and friends at the Rud on June 3rd..
Post by: Kory on May 09, 2007, 11:16 PM
I hate to say it but they probably aren't taking phone tix orders as the Rud doesn't hold many people at all, seriously even as standing (without the dinner tables) you couldn't fit more than 150 people in that place.

It's a benefit for the Rud and what they'd done for the city of Louisville so I can see how they may limit it to local ticket sales only.

I'm not trying to offend anyone and I'd feel a little left out if I didn't live here, but I didn't live in SF when NYE went down or when Okonokos was filmed...we all feel left out sometimes...

On a side note, Brian, can I borrow your tape deck so I can taped this one? I'll pay for the fedex!

ear xtacy is the exclusive seller of the tickets.  It is cash only, but all of their ticket sales are.  They are selling 220 tickets for the show.  That seems like a lot for the Rud but that's what they said.

Hey guys. One last try-

If anyone would be willing to get me two tickets tomorrow (or even one), I will buy yours for you. Sweet deal. You'd get to go for free! I could send the $ through Pay Pal or the mail. Pleeeeeaaase?

I'll be passing through that night on my way to check out IU Bloomington, so I'd love to see the show!!! Not trying to oust any locals, just would LOVE to see jim again before the end of summer when I start paying all my own bills, and can't afford $30 shows anymore. Thanks guys. Maybe I'll pick IU grad so I can be close to these sorts of fabulous Louisville events. :)

also, a word of advice...  the rud is made up of two rooms, the performance space is in a room that holds about 100 people.  That means about half the people who are getting tickets won't be able to actually see the performance.  so get there early if you want to see it.

i was first in line at Ear-X-Tacy yesterday to get tickets to see jim and ron and ron rolled up on his bike and was talking to some of the people waiting for tickets. he said jim wanted to buy the rubyard building but didnt and he still might which is cool. I was wondering is it who ever gets in line first outside of Rudyard that will get to be in the room were the performance will go on because i payed $34 and i want to see jim and ron play. I have never been there before so some advice would be very helpful thanks

that's crazy about the performance room only holding 100 peeps!

i was under the impression that Ear-X-Tacy opened at 10am, but when i got there at 9:45 it was already opened and the guy told me they opened at 9:30!  anyway...by 9:55 they had sold 68 tickets (including the 4 i bought).

i wonder if this has sold out yet?  it surely will by June 3!

i heard there were only 30 left early sunday. so i bet it's sold out or very close by now.
does anyone know what the set-up will be like? i saw pictures of the place. i assume the tables might be moved out and it'll be standing room rather than dinner and a show?
Title: Re: Jim James and friends at the Rud on June 3rd..
Post by: aMD on May 14, 2007, 04:34 PM
The Rud is made up of two large rooms, the bar and the performance space.  The performance space is tiny.  I assume they will take the tables out.  I've never seen them do that but I think they'll have to.  Usually there's only one table in front of the stage and the rest of the seating is on the side (I call that table, btw).  I know a lot of shit about the Rd but not a lot of it applies to this performance because things will be so different.  This used to be one of the easiest bars in louisville to sneak into so I caught a lot of early mmj performances there when I was underage.  I don't think that is going to work this time.

there's a taper in louisville who has taped a lot of shows at the rud, i wonder if he'll be there or will help us out, i think he goes dmbtaper7654 or something like that.  maybe i'll try to hit him up when i get home.  someone HAS to tape this!!!
Title: Re: Jim James and friends at the Rud on June 3rd..
Post by: cmccubbin@work on May 16, 2007, 02:42 PM
i'm going to bring my digital camera.  with a 2 GB memory card i can take almost 1.5 hrs of video....it would be sweet if we could sync the taped show and the video (this is assuming of course that i don't drink too much and/or don't get tired of holding the camera up 90 min.!!!)
Title: Re: Jim James and friends at the Rud on June 3rd..
Post by: Kory on May 16, 2007, 03:35 PM
I can take my videocamera. I wonder if that would be cool to videotape if it's not a full on mmj show? I may have a MD recorder from a friend to borrow. Not the optimum sound quality but surely better than nothing. George Savage does some great tapes with his MD recorder.
Doo Wop may also rent, I'll check.

The taper you may be thinking of is Jon Ice, I think...
Title: Re: Jim James and friends at the Rud on June 3rd..
Post by: aMD on May 16, 2007, 04:03 PM
yeah, jon ice, that's him.

it's possible to get good sound from a camera if it comes down to it.  I think the mmj video policy has always been don't ask don't tell, so let's not talk about that anymore.

the doo wop shop is a great idea but i don't know if they rent that kind of equipment or not.

i think i was thinking of you, kory, didn't you used to be dmbtaper5434?  Or maybe you don't want to own up to that title anymore.  jon ice goes by iceman8888 i think.  i'll try to track him down.

i wonder how much jim will perform with ron and sarah.  this is going to be amazing!!!

Hey guys. I'm leavin for Bloomington IN/Louisville on Wednesday. Some questions for locals-
Are there any places I should definitely check out? I'm vegetarian so no local rib joint advice needed. :) I'll probably only be in Louisville Saturday night and Sunday. What time do bars close on Sunday? I'm assuming there may not be an awesome after party since it is a Sunday night.
Thanks! I'm so excited!

Someone asked if anyone got ticket #34 - I bought 2 tickets at ear-x-tacy, and I just checked - I have #34 and 35.

Anyone still need a ticket?  I have an extra ticket available for face value $34.

jeffro79 - I absolutely agree with you re: "By My Car."  That is probably my favorite MMJ song.  Either that or "I Think I'm Going To Hell."

katehsmc - I'm a vegetarian local (Louisville) person.  Here are some ideas:

-I've been meaning to try this place - http://www.zengardenrestaurant.org/  It's a vegetarian Asian restaurant on Frankfort Ave (not too close to the Rud, but not too far either).
-I haven't been here in a while, but the food is really good here - http://www.thirdavecafe.com/ with lots of vegetarian selections
-Not strictly a vegetarian restaurant, but I like http://www.sapporojapanese.com/ - it's walking distance from ear-x-tacy, if you happen to go there (and it's a fun area to walk- lots of bars, restaurants, shops, etc)
-Lotsa Pasta on Lexington Road is a nice market/cafe/deli type place that serves several good hot and cold vegetarian sandwiches.  Plus, there's a Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen right next door - excellent desserts!

Stuff to see...
-There's a very cool park across the river from downtown Louisville - Ashland Park (in Clarksville, Indiana) has a great view of Louisville and can be a fun place to spend a few hours.  Other parks that I like - Seneca Park, Cherokee Park, Tom Sawyer Park, Tyler Park - I enjoy the parks here.  There's a nice ice cream place right next to Ashland Park http://www.louisvillehotbytes.com/widow.shtml  they serve food too (I forget what I ate there, but they had something vegetarian).
-ear-x-tacy - an excellent record store on Bardstown Road
-if you're into (minor league) baseball, the Louisville Bats have a very cool park downtown.  Not sure if there are home games that weekend
-if you're into bourbon, the Maker's Mark distillery offers tours, which I liked.  Not too far from Louisville.
-the recently fixed-up riverfront area downtown can be fun to walk around
-I'd personally advise staying away from 4th Street Live (an area of bars and restaurants downtown), unless you like overpriced drinks and bad music so loud that you can't hear the person next to you.
-O'shea's Irish Pub is a nice bar/restaurant, with several other options nearby, including Wick's Pizza.  http://www.osheaslouisville.com/

Hope this helps.  Let me know if you want more recommendations for specific things to do/eat.

Also - regarding the discussion of taping the show - I have some taping equipment that I would consider loaning to a reponsible person.  It's nothing too fancy, but it is certainly better than the audio from a digital camera, etc.  I haven't used it in a long time (several years), but I have a MiniDisc recorder, Core Sound binaural microphones (they're small with little clips to attach them to stuff), and a bass rolloff filter.  I think I have a handful of spare MiniDiscs lying around that could be used.  Anyway, I'd be willing to loan this to someone who wants to record the show.  I used to record shows all the time (beginning with Month of Sundays and Metroschifter shows when I was in high school in the mid-90's), but I have very little time lately (and really, much less interest as well) to record shows.  The process of transferring the MiniDisc to CD (digitally) and inserting track markers is really what takes so much time.  I'd consider recording the show to MiniDisc myself and letting someone else master it to CD/SHN/FLAC/whatever, but I'll be bringing a few cameras to the show, and the shutter sound could potentially get a little annoying in the recording.  Anyway, if someone wants to borrow my gear - please let me know.  Thanks!

I just remembered - I also have a DAT recorder which could likely be used to record the show.  However, it is NOT a portable DAT recorder - it's a big DAT recorder/player (as in the type one might have in their home stereo setup).  It's the size of a VCR.  If someone wants to lug that around and locate a power source for it, I'd also be willing to loan it out for the show.

I just wanted to post real quick and let everyone know who didn't get to go how fucking awesome the show was in so many ways. I am sure most of the details will come out tomorrow but here is my quick rundown.

• Jim was onstage almost the whole time. Just Under 4 hrs.
• Carl played on most of the songs but not all.
• Tons of covers.
• Two new Songs (positive at least 1, the other could have been a cover I didn't recognize)
• We all wore blind folds for a couple songs.

Keep your fingers crossed about a recording surfacing.

Thanks 4 the early report KC.
Looking forward to hearing from aMD, Kory & anyone else who was lucky enough to make this show.

I'm still in shock from the performance... it was surreal being in a room that small and the sound was incredible. I'll have some pictures up in a little while, possilby tonight. For now here's a picture of the setlist, thanks to Dylan. Sorry for the poor quality as i had it set to manual mode and didn't change it for the quick picture.
It was a pleasure meeting you Dylan, Brian and Scott.

On a somewhat related note, Megisnotreal was supposed to show up but didn't and Scott was out here ticket price. He couldn't reach her on the phone all day and until the show started. Let's hope all is well and there was just a misunderstanding.

Wow. That was a fucking amazing show.  This is going to be long-winded but I have to start from the beginning.

I showed up around 1:00 to wait in line for the show.  About a half an hour later the musicians showed up.  I noticed that Carl walked in right behind Jim.

People, including ron whitehead's percussionist, thought we were crazy for sitting put there so long, but it was a nice day and we got to hear all of a 2 and a half hour soundcheck.  Although most of the songs got replayed at the show there was one song that sounded like a new song that wasn't replayed, but it could have been a cover.

They let us in at 6:00 and served us our beans, cole slaw, and cornbread as we walked in.  The beans and the cornbread were very tasty but I could have done without the slaw.  My dedication paid off as I got a front row seat.  I was also lucky enough to find a good seat for Brian right behind me.

Ron Whitehead and Sarah Elizabeth were amazing!  Ron's poems came to life with Sarah and Jim accompanying him.  They did the first three songs/poems without Jim and after that point Jim didn't leave the stage. It's difficult to put what this performance was like into words.

During the first set jim and sarah elizabeth played a fucking amazing version of White Rabbit, also, great versions of Sounds of Silence and House of the Rising Sun.  They did some of Sarah Elizabeth's tunes as well which were really nice.

They broke for 20 minutes and then came back for 2 and a half hours.  The audience was great, with a few exceptions.  There was a great energy to the audience and it came through in the performances.  I'm going to list the set list out first the way it reads on the list and then I'll annotate it next (oh, I got the setlist :) )

TONIGHT I WANT TO CELEBRATE
LOOK AT YOU
AT DAWN
IT BEATS 4U
BERMUDA HWY
HOPEFULLY
OLD SEPT
WAY HE SINGS
GIDEON
I WILL BE THERE WHEN YOU DIE
WONDERFUL(THE WAY I FEEL)
I NEEDED IT MOST
DANCEFLOORS
WONDERFULL MAN
NASH TO KY (WITH SARAH)
KNOT COMES LOOSE (WITH SARAH)
WORDLESS CHORUS (WITH SARAH)
GOLDEN (WITH SARAH)
INTO THE WOODS
THE BEAR
BY MY CAR
DONDANTE
ORDINARY
ANYTIME
CHERISH (WITH SARAH)
SETTIN THE WOODS OF FIRE (WITH SARAH)
LOUISIANNA WOMAN (WITH SARAH)
GREIVOUS ANGEL (WITH SARAH)
NOBODY (WITH SARAH)

The annotated version:
TONIGHT I WANT TO CELEBRATE – jim on omnichord
LOOK AT YOU – possibly an original, jim on guitar, carl on lap steel
AT DAWN – filled the tiny room we were in and just about blew me away.
IT BEATS 4U – I need to update the tabs page (capo on 8).  Great version! Jim solo with guitar
BERMUDA HWY - Jim solo with guitar
HOPEFULLY - Jim solo with guitar
OLD SEPT – Jim and Carl on acoustic guitar
WAY HE SINGS  – Jim and Carl on acoustic guitar
GIDEON– Jim and Carl on acoustic guitar.  Before this song Jim talked about going down to new Orleans last week and seeing all the fucked up shit down there and trying to make sense of it.  He also talked about not wanting his music to be overtly political but being drawn to the those messages when you look at things like Katrina.  I don't think it was any mistake that they played this song next.
I WILL BE THERE WHEN YOU DIE - Jim solo with guitar.  Amazing.  This is my wife and I's song and this was a great version!  This is point in the show when my wife began to cry.
WONDERFUL(THE WAY I FEEL) - Jim solo with guitar. This is definitely a new song.  He said he wrote it after he got out of the hospital and he felt like shit and felt really good at the same time because a lot of good stuff was happening
I NEEDED IT MOST  - Jim solo with guitar
DANCEFLOORS  – Jim and Carl on acoustic guitar
WONDERFULL MAN – Jim on omnichord
NASH TO KY (WITH SARAH and carl) – spectacular version!  This has got to be the best live version of this song hands down!
KNOT COMES LOOSE (WITH SARAH) – wow!  My first time seeing this one live, spectacular! I need to retab this one: capo on 8. (btw, I loved jim's pink capo!)
WORDLESS CHORUS (WITH SARAH) – jim on acoustic guitar.  This is the first version I know of with jim on guitar for this song.  Great version
GOLDEN (WITH SARAH and carl) – wow! All I can say.
INTO THE WOODS - Jim solo with guitar.  For a time during this song jim stepped away from the mic and sang at the top of his lungs, filling the hall with the power of his unamplified voice. He also told a story half way through the song, explaining the lyric "E!".  he said his old roommate and him used to say "E!" if something was good or cool. Like, hey isn't that girl hot, yeah she's totally E! (note to self: correct the tab for this song)
THE BEAR- Jim solo with guitar.
BY MY CAR- Jim solo with guitar
DONDANTE- Jim on guitar, carl on sax. This was a chilly, morifying, wonderful version of this song. Afterwards jim mention aaron todovich and said that the last time he saw him play was on that very stage.  This is when my wife lost it.  She was friends with aaron and that song always chokes her up.  This version just about did her in.  this was the highlight of the evening for me.
ORDINARY – jim solo with guitar, probably another new song
ANYTIME – jim on omnichord, carl on acoustic guitar.
CHERISH (WITH SARAH and carl) – kool and the gang cover. before this song jim passed out sleeping masks for everyone to wear.  He told us that we could wear them on this song but we would be required to in a few songs.    He had the audience sing the chorus at the very end
SETTIN THE WOODS OF FIRE (WITH SARAH and carl) – hank Williams jr cover
LOUISIANNA WOMAN (WITH SARAH) – Loretta lynn cover (usually with Conway twitty)
GREIVOUS ANGEL (WITH SARAH) – what a beautiful cover of a beautiful song!!!  Something tells me jim's working on a gram parsons EP along with the george Harrison one already recorded.
NOBODY (WITH SARAH) – a fucking Keith Sweat cover!  This is the song that Jim required us to wear the sleeping masks.  Sarah Elizabeth and Jim broke this slow jam down!  They kept the music rolling and snuck out of the room without the blindfolded audience realizing it.  After some amount of time I finally took my blindfold off to notice the empty stage. It was classic!

I may have messed up on what carl was playing for each song, it seems like played sax on another song as well.  I'm not sure exactly how many new songs we got two or three.

I'm not sure I mentioned this but sarah elizabeth's singing voice is amazing!  Sultry, sweet, sexy, beautiful.

It was great to finally meet Kory, hang out with Brian a bit, meet up with old friends, and meet some new ones (what's up Walt and Curry!?)  I'm still reeling from this show, it will take me a while to put this experience into some perspective.  All I can really say right now is wow, just WOW!

Quoteunfortunately, brian ran out of battery during by my car so the rest of the show isn't on his tape, including dondante.  after it was over brian patted me on the shoulder as if to say WOW, i said tell me you got that and he just shrugged his head no.

the word is that scoot got the show taped but kory knows more about that.  the rud taped it but the sound guy was a dick, so if that version leaks it going to have to come through ron or jim

3/4 is better than none!

KJ, tell me more about this fine fellow by the name of Scoot.

as it clearly said in a ton of locations, "no taping of any kind allowed" I don't think we should talk too much about who taped but moreless the fact that it did get recorded.
With that being said, I don't know any one that taped it.  ;)

I posted a couple quick unedited pictures on a post KC made over on the ol' 37.

As Kory said, there were signs saying "no recording."

Wow!  What a show!  I had been less-than-floored by a few recent MMJ shows, but this show was AMAZING!  My favorite show in quite some time...  [EDIT: The person who was to buy my other ticket got in touch with me, and all is well - no problems.]

Nice/thorough review, aMD!

Highlights for me were:
-having at least 100 people get into the show before me, yet still sitting in the first row, right behind Carl.
-Ron's "I Refuse" poem
-Sarah Elizabeth's voice - WOW!  Her duets with Jim were outstanding!  I'd love to see more in the future.
-White Rabbit
-By My Car
-laughing and hollering while blindfolded for Cherish and Nobody.  I feel quite certain that no one had those 2 on the list of "songs they might play tonight"!
-Setting the Woods on Fire and Louisiana Woman - the best part of the show for me.  I really loved the back-and-forth June Carter/Johnny Cash-esque vocals.
-the crowd was great, and it was nice to meet Kory, KC, and Chris.

I took ~150 pics of varying quality wih my assortment of cameras.  I'll go through them in the next few days and put them on my web site.  I'll post a link when they're ready to view.

OK, maybe I'm wrong, although I don't recall any other songs that might have been Madonna songs.  I'm not terribly familiar with Kool & The Gang or Madonna.  Apparently they both have songs called Cherish, and I'm not sure which one Jim & Sarah Elizabeth played...

So if no recording was allowed and someone mentioned that the soundguy recorded it, will it be officially released in some way?

How else would you explain a 2 hour soundcheck that was mostly an acoustic (or 2) guitar, vocal and omnichord?

The sound WAS perfect. If you closed your eyes you may have well been sitting in front of a McIntosh sound system.

brian and i talked to the sound guy.  apparently all the shows at the rud are taped by the house and given to the artist.  the sound guy said he wouldn't be doing anything with the recording since they asked for no tapers but that he'd give the tape to ron for "archival purposes". he then proceeded to tell us about bittorrents and how they work as if we'd never seen a microphone.

i know what you mean though, corey, the first thing i thought when i saw the no taping signs was that they must be officially releasing this in some form, but after talking to that dude i'm not sure.

btw, the sound was really good, when there was no feedback.  i could done without that.
Title: Re: Jim James and friends at the Rud on June 3rd..
Post by: sweatboard on Jun 04, 2007, 01:23 PM
Yeah, the sound was ASTOUNDING (I can't possibly put into words how blown away I truly was by the sound).  It was so small I was hoping Jim would do a song without any amplification, so it was really nice when he backed up from the mic on "Into The Woods" and sang, when he finally stepped backed to the mic it made the hair on my neck stand up.  Speaking of hair, I'm surprised Dylan has any left, he was sitting right in front of Jim and when Jim sang the first line of At Dawn I swear it was like a two hundred mile an hour wind just ripped through the room, when Dylan turned around at the end of the song to smile at me I fully expected his face to be gone.
Title: Re: Jim James and friends at the Rud on June 3rd..
Post by: sweatboard on Jun 04, 2007, 01:36 PM
Ha, yeah there were some minor feedback issues but they got taken care of on each occasion.  I guess with that many microphones so close together there were bound to be those kinds of issues.  Yeah, the sound guy did some brilliant work but he was not to interested in entertaining our idea about giving me his e-mail address so I could get the show from him at some point.  It sounds like the sound guy's recording is one of those that gets locked in some vault somewhere.  One day we might get a song or two from that show pop up on a b-side or something.  It's a shame; I can't kick myself in the ass enough for fucking up this recording.  I could literally cry.  The end of Don Dante was one of the most amazing things I have ever heard in my life.  I had to close my eyes it was just Jim beating the shit out of two chords on his guitar over and over again and I don't think I've ever heard two chords being played more passionately, it was like his guitar was going to explode at any second.  The almost painful way Jim's chords were being hacked out in contrast with the sweetest most beautiful sax solo of all time that Carl was laying down on top of it...........it was transcendent.

You mean Snowy Bramble right?  ;)

I've seen that sound guy around, I just can't place him. Dylan, do you know if he does sound elsewhere or work somewhere familiar? Maybe I've just seen him do sound at the rud and that's it.

Speaking of that... any locals want to come up with a business model and take the plunge and buy the Rud as a joint effort? Something is calling me to at least entertain the idea.

Yes, Snowy played sax on Nashville to Kentucky; I most certainly remember that as being one of the 2000 things I was blown away by last night.  I would venture to say last night was the best live version of I Needed It Most to date as well as the best acoustic/solo version of many other songs to date (Wordless, Dancefloors, Into The Woods, etc. etc. HOLY SHIT I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW AMAZING THAT SHOW WAS!!!!  Sorry, I'm still trying to collect myself.  Also, Sarah Elizabeth's voice was fucking beautiful and her and Jim sounded perfect together especially on Worldless.

QuoteSo..... if they're not planning on releasing the show in any way, I wonder why taping wasn't allowed. Seems odd... and unfortunate. I think I'd give my left testicle to hear that take of "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man".

YES!! It was a footstompin hoe-down good time.  I was waiting for the backdrop to catch fire.  Jim was doing this awesomely funky head weave during that song.  It's hard to describe but it was like he was weaving his head like some sort of funky snake, and by "funky" I mean "GET DOWN MOTHERFUCKER"  Please tell me a tape will surface of this show... :'(

Oh Yeah,  Thanks again Dylan.  I LOVE YOU!!!! :-*

Quoteit was really nice when he backed up from the mic on "Into The Woods" and sang, when he finally stepped backed to the mic it made the hair on my neck stand up.

Like so?

Yep, exactly.  :)  I mean EEEEEEEE.

He was singing his ass off last night there are just no words to describe how good his voice sounded especially on stuff like Gideon and Wordless.  I also loved the way he sang The Bear last night it was a little diffrent vocal melody than normal.

Wonderful reviews, y'all. Thanks so much.

Can I ask what the current state of the Rud is? Imminently going under? Is the building under new management? Why the need for the benefit now?

I'm from Austin and I still feel faint pangs of grief when I drive by what used to be Steamboat, used to be Liberty Lunch, used to be the Mercury...

I believe the owners want to retire but want to ensure it falls in the the right hands. I think the benefit was to keep it's doors open as it possible doesn't turn a whole lot of money... I'm not sure about that though...

They might not have allowed taping due to contract Music Biz type shit

there used to be a couple bands in Indy that performed with full costumes on because they were members of other bands & contractually couldn't perform together

Not much I can add that hasnt already been said, it was simply AMAZING. I still cant believe the Keith Sweat cover. I heard "By My Car" :). On the 3 hour drive home me and my friend pretty much just sat in awe with perma-grin, every once in awhile we would just look at each other and go "man". Its hard for me to imagine any show ever topping this.
EDIT: Thanks again Dylan

There isn't much that I can add that hasn't already been said, but the show at The Rud was one of the most amazing things I have ever been apart of. It might have been a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am glad that I was able to take advantage of it.

Dylan, it was great to see you and your wife again. It was nice meeting someone that my friend Curry and I could wait in line with. Now that I know you are on this forum, I decided to sign myself up as well.

i can say with 1,000 % certainty that this show was taped.  i sat in the seats facing the stage against the wall and the guy next to me (white t-shirt, cargo shorts) taped the entire Jim set.  he had this little bag and then he and his GF would take turns holding up a U-shaped microphone.  thus, i didn't sing all the words like i wanted to, b/c i didn't want to ruin the recording...but i'm afraid this drunken chick yelling throughout the show may have (if you were there you know who i'm talking about!).

nevertheless, i recorded 4-5 videos of some of the songs.  the lighting was so low you can't really see anything, but the audio came through fairly well.  i will talk to Dylan about trying to post these on savefile and will get them up on YouTube...so watch for them!

without going into much detail...the show was amazing.  will add more later!

QuoteThank you cmccubbin! I look forward to seeing them. Did you get any of the new songs on video?

i did...i got "Wonderful (The Way I Feel)"...i knew it was a new song b/c Jim started talking about writing it after he got out of the hospital...they are being uploaded to YouTube as we speak.  i will post the links here! let's see....i got "At Dawn," "Bermuda Highway," "Hopefully," "Wonderful (The Way I Feel)," "The Way He Sings," and "I Needed It Most."  i could have got more but i was selfish and wanted to watch the show!

as a disclaimer...the video footage is NOT good at all b/c the lighting was SO low, but maybe someone smarter than me can rip/separate the audio file out of the video file if i send it to them?

My first chance to post since the show.  I'm am so incredibly thankful to have the chance to make this show.  Jim is an unbelievable musician and singer song-writer. It was great to hear some songs you wouldn't normally hear at a show with the full band.  I'm so glad  to have seen Into The Woods.  It's one of my favorites from Z and he rarely plays that song.  Anyways, this show was by far a one of a kind show, and I'm glad I got to go.

Now, I'm looking forward to seeing MMJ open up for Dylan at Red Rocks in July. I can't wait.

Great Work Friend!!!  I was excited to hear "Wonderful" again.  I think "Look At You" is the same song he played when he opened for Bright Eyes, I think we can safely say that "Wonderful (the way I feel)" and "Look At You" are new songs.  "Ordinary" was a GREAT song but I'm still not sure who wrote that one.

;D  I like the way you think.  I'll go in on that venture.  I thought for sure I would be able to get all of Jim's set, the longest they ever play as a band is 1hr 45min (besides Bonnaroo last year and maybe one or two other shows) and he's never played more than about 10 songs solo/acoustic.  I never imagined in a million years that he would have played that long last night.  On one hand I'm glad he played that long and on the other he outplayed my fucking recording.:'(  This show reminds me of the Planetarium show in many ways, just as Epic, just as Legendary.  When everyone put on the blindfolds and then the show ended with no one on stage I couldn't help but think back to that moment during "Evelyn" during the Planetarium show.  I think the venue and the people envolved with this show across the board made for a magical evening.  Jim talked about the importance of keeping places like the Rudd Alive, I couldn't agree more.  After Ron and Sarah's set was done I told Dylan it was already worth the trip and the ticket price.  If it wasn't for the Rudd I would have probably never heard of Ron or Sarah and that would have been a shame.  It just makes me want to get out and support local music and art even more.  Places like the Rudd are all over the country createing environments that are magic friendly.  We have a place like that here in Knoxville and the poor guy that owns the place is doing good to break even...It's just another reminder to get out and support these places as much as possible!!!!!

I'm going to go ahead and post this over here to.  This is how Ron Whitehead described what this evening was like for him, it gets me teary eyed.  There were truly some beautiful people performing that night.  I've heard Jim sing with other people before but like Ron said, Jim and Sarah singing together was (well, I'll let him tell you)...

LIVE at THE RUD

(photo of Jim, Sarah, Carl, Andy, Ron in huddle at The Rud)

The Best concert I've ever had anything to do with. You've got to understand.
Since childhood I've attended, performed at, produced, and participated in
tens of thousands of concerts round the world. Last night, June 3rd 2007,
The Rudyard Kipling Benefit Concert was The Best.

The Best Concert of All Time.

There are many reasons why it was The Best Concert of all time. I'll name
a few. Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Sarah Elizabeth Whitehead are
my two favorite singers. They are two of The Best singers songwriters
musicians. But there is more. They have a rare necessary element: deep
passionate compassionate hearts. They have an innate inherent wisdom
that is both ancient and childlike. All those elements birth a charisma that
is electrifying. The energy at The Rud was electric. 4-hour concert. The
audience in rapt attention. There is more. The union of male (Jim) and female
(Sarah) energy produced a duet unlike any other duet, past or present. Plus.
No singers have the courage or ability to go where Jim and Sarah went at
the Live at The Rud concert. They covered the spectrum of musical genres:
from acappella mountain to oldtime to country to blues to jazz to folk to soul
to rock to R&B, from broken hearted spirituals to steamy romance, and more.
In one concert Jim and Sarah proved that they are master singers in any genre.
The audience was mesmerized. Not one person, including the performers, will
ever be the same. That includes Carl Broemel (amazing), Andy Cook (brilliant),
and me. The night was more than special, it was pure alchemy. We were
transformed transported to new realms. Spirit and sex became one energy.
The Holy Spirit The Great Spirit moved in us and through us. The Rud was
filled with angels with spirits. We heard angels sing, perform. We will never
be the same. My heart is open. Tears of joy. Amazing Grace. Thanks.

I mean, I know you can't describe it really but how great was that?   Did the Sara/Jim vocals on Sounds of Silence just blow your mind or what?

What was your favorite of all 8 covers?

white rabbit that was fucking killer!  It began as a duet between sarah and jim but jim kind of took it over by overpowering her with his voice, which is really saying something because she can sing!

Sounds of silence and house of the rising sun were both really good, spot-on covers.  jim played solos which is always fun to see him do.  their version of sounds of silence made me fall in love with that song again.

my favorite cover was either nobody, because... well, just because.  or the return of grevious angel.  i've heard a lot of great duets for this song and their version rivalled any.

Just wanted to weigh in as another voice about how sweet this show was!!  I tried to savor it as best I could because I felt it was such a unique opportunity, like I was glimpsing something I shouldn't.   The lighting (artificial and natural) and atmosphere in the Rud with such an appreciative audience really set the mood beautifully.

My buddy and I just looked at each other wide-eyed when Jim started that opening guitar passage on 'Sound of Silence'.   We've talked alot about Jim's haunting, lonesome quality in his voice and how much that echoed Simon & Garfunkel's great work so this was just a natural and so beautifully performed with Sarah Elizabeth.  I've been waiting for that a long time.  Amazing.  Is there really a better opening line than "Hello darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk with you again"?

The rest of the covers were amazing too.  The really ran the whole gambit, just look at those last five songs.   Great energy and interplay on the more country-tinged stuff, the Conway/Loretta-Gram/Emmylou vibes.  Loved it.  I about came out of my chair on 'Return of the Grevious Angel'.  Hard to top that.  I was unfamiliar with 'Ordinary' but that was a terrific song by Aaron? I assume??  That's very much worth checking out.

Loved the new originals too, both were beautiful.  Can Jim write some kinda melody or what?  Such a gift!  Love the spiritual themed 'Look at You' and the euphoric 'Wonderful (The Way I Feel)'.  New favorite line: "I'll never grow older, at least not in my mind".  Amen.  Sorry for gushing, just a really moving performance.  Thanks Jim, Sarah, Ron, Carl and the rest of the gang!!

Ron is getting ready to upload something like 200 photos from the show to his website at some point today.  The photos will include behind the scenes stuff.  Check it out....

QuoteWow. That was a fucking amazing show.  This is going to be long-winded but I have to start from the beginning.

I'm not sure exactly how many new songs we got two or three.
... I'm still reeling from this show, it will take me a while to put this experience into some perspective.  All I can really say right now is wow, just WOW!
THANK YOU for such a great recap of the show!  i got some chills, and eye-watering just reading it.  man oh man.   :D

Glad to hear people like the pics.  Some of my pics are now up in the gallery (on the MMJ web site, aka where you are right now).  All my pics can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/nolessthanthetreesandthestars/

Also, I just checked, and the slideshow (containing great pics taken by Ron & Sarah Elizabeth's photographer) is now up at http://www.tappingmyownphone.com/

re: Recordings from the Rudyard Kipling benefit show on 6/3/07

There was some discussion in another thread about recordings from the recent Jim James show at the Rudyard Kipling in Louisville, KY.  There were signs posted at the venue requesting "no taping."  I talked to Jim about it, and he and the band would really appreciate if these recordings were not distributed in any way (especially posted on public web sites).

It was alluded to in another thread, but I personally made an audio recording of the show.  (My recording has not even been transferred to CD/computer yet.)  If Jim and MMJ are OK with it, I will distribute my recording freely to anyone who wants it sometime next year, after the next album comes out.  (Note: I know absolutely nothing about the next album and when it might come out.)

So...  If you have a recording (audio or video), please don't distribute it in any way or post it to web sites such as YouTube.

Jim and MMJ are really cool about letting fans record their shows.  I'd like to avoid a situation where this recording with new songs gets leaked out, potentially causing the band to reconsider their generous stance on taping.  I don't think anyone wants that to happen.

Thanks everybody!!

I'm guessing he doesn't want it distributed due to the magic unleashed that evening.  Would that be a correct assumption?

I think they need to make an official release of this show from the sound board recording and then donate the proceeds to further benefit the Rud. Also where do y'all think this show ranks in the legend of MMJ?

I know I for one would gladly shell out fifteen bucks to have the sound board recording and further help the Rud.  I also would imagine that at least 213 other people would do the same!

Well, I'm glad I read Scott's post, cuz I was about to put 5 videos on YouTube. I didn't tape any new songs, but I'll keep them to myself anyway.
Scott, did you talk to Jim about it after the show? I was kind of sad that they all disappeared while I had my mask on, cuz I wanted to thank Ron and Sarah for sending tickets all the way to Austin. And I wouldn't have minded meeting Jim either.  ;)
Anyway, it was a great show. Definitelty worth the 16 hour drive! I hope they'll release an official recording eventually.

It was a soft and sultry song with Carl on steel pedal.  That's all I really remember.  Not a funk or electronica song in the least.

It's been almost a year but I am positive "Look at You" had a religious vibe.  I think the words "power and glory" and especially "glory" were repeated in a chorus.  I think this has been debated before here but it sure sounded to me like some Christian overtones or at least about God.    Those are often words associated with God in a religious context.   I don't want to overstate that but I'm pretty sure it was at least tinged in that direction.  Very beautiful song that I remember.
