Title: red rocks
Post by: hotfoam on Apr 16, 2008, 10:26 PM
When is the Red Rocks show for 08? Is the place still standing after the "face meltingly loud" set opening for Bob last year? Jeez Louise. What a way for an old fart to be introduced to MMJ. Counting the days...

not announced yet, but you're in the right place to find announcements as they come.

I was at red rocks night one last year. i was wondering if any of you old farts "got it".  Glad you did.  :)

Hey, cut us old farts some slack. (grin) Of course we "got" it. We've been "getting" it for over 40 years now. You probably noticed a lot of people my age with their kids. My now teenagers first show when he was 7 was The Who. He's seen the Who twice now and I'd like to take him to see Roger Waters in a couple of weeks. I take him to some of "my" shows and he takes me to some of "his". The Bob show was his first time to see Dylan. I've lost count of the Bob shows I've been to. We were sitting with some people my age who had also taken their kids and they were as blown away with MMJ as we were.  I bought the catalog within weeks. They continue to carry on in a great traditional, non-traditional way. (Gideon could have been a lost track off of Who's Next.) I saw Springsteen in 75 two weeks before Born To Run came out and paid $5 for the privelage. Traded high 5s with Bono on the 16th row of the War tour in 81 (?) at the Loyd Noble Center where he delivered about half the  set standing next to me. No one knew who the hell they were. My point is, I haven't been as buzzed about the momentum about any band since until MMJ and this band is on the brink of taking a lot of new people along for a nice ride. Believe me, I've been on this ride before and I know that this can be a great and pivotal year for this band. Don't worry about people "getting it". It's like Frank Zappa said, words to the effect that "The people who will get it will get it. The people who don't get it probably weren't supposed to." As for my generation, it's sort of like what Bob said. "He who is busy not being born is a busy dying." Same is true for the music. It's better than it ever has been. Don't let any one my age try and tell you otherwise. They are idiots.

Best regards. See you at Red Rocks.

word.  I've seen Dylan 11 times I think and MMJ around 40 so seeing them together was awesome.  And I don't really worry too much about people getting it, I guess I just had a bad experience at red rocks.  The guy sitting next to me, who knew I was a huge jacket fan yelled "let bob play" really loud before the last song. plus, dylan fans are notorious for being apathetic towards openers.  I remember seeing dylan fans reading the paper and standing with their back to the stage during Joan Osbourne's set in 97.  anyway, glad you're one of the good guys. welcome to the boards, fellow jacket and dylan fan.

i can say that most people around me loved MMJ (day 2). i had the hoodie on, and a handful of (older) folks asked me who this band was. maybe because no one had the balls to say, "let bob play" around three guys giving high fives and man-hugs after every song.

As another one of the (not as) old farts, I say 'thanks for getting it', hotfoam - your experience is impressive. I was at that Red Rocks show to see MMJ, with Bob as a bonus - I got a kick out of seeing the pockets of Jacket fans dispersed throughout the crowd getting crazy during their set. I was lucky enough to have a few right in front of me and my buddy, and several of the Dylan fans around us were favorably impressed (of course there were those who weren't too) . Can't wait to see them there again, I hope it's this year too, and this time I'll be in front with you guys!

Hey crispevil, the people next to me my age were loving the MMJ set. It was really pretty amusing. Fella asks me if this was really as good as he thought it was. Naturally I verified that it was. It was a great set. I haven't seen a band that on in ages. What a treasure it was to get Okonokos a few days later and hear so many themes from so many other far away places. All of it so familiar yet so fresh. MMJ is just loaded with the "what the f-ck?" factor. On the other hand, the kids sitting in front of me during the Bob portion only reacted when the Paris wannabee got up to dance during Bob's Spirit On The Water exclaiming "That's my favorite Bob Dylan song!" Indeed. LMAO.

Bob was on. You don't get Watching The River Flow and my favorite Bob song, When I Paint My Masterpiece in the same set. And forget ever seeing another Bob Friend of the Devil. A lot of us Deadheads certainly appreciate the nod, considering the source, of course.

I wonder if they are going to be doing some amphitheatre shows with the Keys on the bill to help sell the large capacity?  This is good and bad.  I've always wanted to see the boys outside since I havn't been able to catch them at a festival yet, and seeing the Keys as well would be sweet.   But of course it just won't sound as good as the theatre shows but I guess RCMH should cover that..... Does anyone know if this show is general admission or reserved seating?
Title: Re: red rocks
Post by: Crispy on Apr 21, 2008, 03:39 PM
The way it usually works at red rocks is that the 1st 25 rows are GA, then 25-50 are reserved, and from 50 to the top is GA. Weird, but that's the way they've always done it. Don't bother getting a reserved seat, you can easily get down to the 1st 25 without getting in line too early. I'm sure there will be a great crowd but I doubt that it will sell out either.

biggest mistake i ever made at a mmj show was getting there really early and getting shit faced and having to take a piss every like 20 minutes.  This especially sucks ass when you are standing like 5 feet from the stage.

And on my wife's birthday! How did I pull that off? (grin) What a great way to come home from work.

I envy you folks that have never been there before. You're in for one of the best evenings of your life. I have friends fly up every year just for a Red Rocks show. Their first show is always their best. I'm taking some friends up from Ohio the week before to catch their first show there, Steely Dan. A few years ago, another friend was sobbing during Guiniverre during the CSN&Y show. He was just overcome with the music and the majesty of it all. (Maybe the "altitude" had something to do with it as well.)

MMJ's show there last year opening for Bob's first night was written up in the local paper as "face meltingly loud". It was a wonderful set and I think the band was really enjoying it. Red Rocks seems to really inspire band and fans alike, a whole nother level. On a good night, it just levitates. My favorite place in the world.

Welcome to Red Rocks. Welcome to my backyard. Crank it up to 11.

Be seeing you all.

Just a note about the GA and reserved seating to compliment the prior post. I like to buy a reserved seat, they are usually on a few bucks more. You can prolong the tailgate and you don't have to camp out on the ramp to run inside and drink $7 beers until showtime. You can just come in right before the show and if there is room in the GA, you can move down into it. You don't have to worry about a seat. Sometimes the shows are all reserved.

This show is also late August and the weather can be a little unpredictable. It may be hot during the day but cool at night. I usually pack in some rain gear and a sweater. Bring an extra poncho and you'd be surprised how grateful someone who might need it will be. Red Rocks audiences are great. Plan on spending some time up in the south lot. Above all, be nice to the old farts.

What hotfoam says is true, and it's usually what I end up doing too - at least the tailgating and late arrival part anyway. However, for My Morning Jacket I'm going to be camping in line to get down front. I would have been there last year if I had not had to wait for my buddy to get off work. Arg! It worked out fine anyway, we had no problem getting down to row 20 even after some tailgating.

Another great thing about Red Rocks is the space - the amphitheater benches are plenty wide (fore and aft), so it's pretty easy to get out and back to empty the bladder and refill the beers!

Yes, always bring rain gear to Red Rocks, no matter how great the weather is before the show! See you there hotfoam!

We learned the hard way. My first show there was Neil Young on the Friends and Relatives Tour. You can view it on Live at Red Rocks DVD. We went in in shorts and by the time the encore rolled around it was trying to snow! Just prepare for it. Bad weather shows there have been some of the best. I saw one band there (who I won't mention for fear of embarrasment) in a cloud in August. It was unreal.

What lot do you usually tail gate in? Maybe I'll tie a balloon on the car and you can come by and I'll drink a beer with you.

We had that same kind of weather at an Allman Brothers show there 2 years ago. I had my raincoat but my gf did not - guess who did not wear the raincoat. And I see most shows there in a cloud. ;)

I usually end up in the upper north lot, but I'm not sure where I'll be this time, getting there early. I'll definitely catch up with you then and we'll crack some cold ones!

General admission, reserved seating information has been circulated on the the Red Rocks mailing list and has probably been listed on their website by now. GA rows 2-25, reserved 26 and up except for the last couple of rows. I think prices are $36 GA and $40 reserved.

Here's what Red Rocks website has posted:

My Morning Jacket
Thursday, August 21, 2008 — 7:00PM
doors open at 6:00PM

With The Black Keys
$40.00 RES, $36.00 GA - Ticketmaster - plus applicable service charges.
AEG Live is excited to announce MY MORNING JACKET featuring THE BLACK KEYS performing at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Thursday, August 21, 2008.

My Morning Jacket explosive sound garners mighty praise. David Fricke reviewed My Morning Jacket's recent SXSW , he said "You could keep biting your nails, waiting for a Zeppelin-reunion tour. Or you can see My Morning Jacket, here and now, make their own Physical Graffiti in your face."

"There's a theme of moral confusion that runs through the whole record," says Jim James, frontman of My Morning Jacket, explaining the title of the band's new album, Evil Urges. "The world today is such a confused place. Things that people think are good values are obviously twisted, but there are other things considered evil that obviously aren't. There is real evil out there, but Evil Urges is about how all of these things that you've been told are evil really aren't, unless they're actually hurting something or somebody."

It's ambitious territory for the group's fifth full-length studio album, and it's matched by the most far-ranging, surprising, and satisfying sounds of their career. From the freak-funk electro-slam of "Highly Suspicious" to the contemplative "Sec Walkin'," which could almost be a Nashville standard, on Evil Urges, My Morning Jacket displays the scope and fearlessness that demonstrates their growth into one of the world's great rock & roll bands.

Golden Gate State Park is a nice spot, but like you say, a pretty good distance from Red Rocks. Last year aMD stayed at Chief Hosa Campground which is an easy drive right up I-70. It's right next to the highway, so not much isolation if that's what you're looking for. Definitely no camping in Red Rocks Park itself.

We wound up on 35. Had a lot of problems getting logged in and getting the password. The KBCO site sucked, posted nothing until the last moment and then you had to keep entering and re-entering user id and password. They usually do a much better job than this; it took about 5 minutes to finally just get the freakin password. Maybe it was volume. On the other hand, just glad to be in and row 35 isn't that bad. Can watch the moon rise over the stage and drink in the whole spectacle.

Roger Waters is here Wednesday. Looking forward to that one.

That's what I've done in the past but I like to tailgate till the last minute and then roll in and sometimes there isn't much left by then. There aren't any "bad" seats unless the wind is blowing and then the sound swirls around in the upper rows at the top. It can sound a little muffled. Some people like to stand at the very top and just drink in the spectacle. Optimal seats, as far as I'm concerned, are row 25 or row 26. I have 8th row for Steely Dan (all reserved) and have sat as close as 4th row but I like row 25 and 26. Seems to be best for sound and sight lines and you're in the crowd where all the fun is.

For me, the closer the better at Red Rocks, so I will be there early to get down front.  If you have a reserved ticket you can still sit in GA, and really, you can sit in the reserved section with a GA ticket.  Alot of people buy the reserved just in case but end up down in GA.  They don't really check tickets there, but if there is somebody is in your reserved space you just have to tell them to move and they will comply.  I've never had to go get an usher to have somebody move.  For the best experience try to be in at least row 40 or closer.  For me, the sound isn't too great when you get higher up, especially on a windy night.

got my GA's - I will be there early to get about row 10.  I don't like being too close there.

bring that shit on!

how about another Telluride show right after that?  this time headlining of course!?!

that  would be nothing short of epic.
