Will I need to miss metaalica to get up front for MMJ? Or will I be able to how early will others be getting there,.
I've never been to Bonnaroo, but I would skip out on part of, if not all of Metallica to get up front for MMJ... unless I was really into Metallica at that moment in time. I saw them in 2004? and they were upstaged by Godsmack who was opening for them. Hetfield didn't sound all that great and they didn't play anything from Kill Em All. Maybe things have changed these days, hopefully?
Metallica is 9 to 11:30...
...My Morning Jacket is 12 to 3...
I will probably leave Metallica at 11, or maybe a little earlier depending on how good or bad those guys are sounding. It'll be my first Metallica show so I don't want to skip too much of it. Meanwhile, I was at the 2006 show that MMJ put on, and I can tell you it was their absolute best performance. You don't want to miss it. There'll be some Jacketeers out there on the railing waiting for much more than an hour, so you'll at least have some folks to talk to if you decide to leave extra early.
Is anyone else afraid of passing out during the three hour stint? I've been sick the past couple of days (have lost 8 pounds in 4 days), so now all I can think about is whether or not I'll have the endurance to last through Bonnaroo.
Quote...they didn't play anything from Kill Em All.
WHAT?! I just looked at my iPod, and of the entire Metallica discography, 8 of the Top 15 most listened to tracks are from Kill 'Em All. If they don't play the raw shit, I'm gonna be leaving earlier than scheduled.
i am going thru the same dilemma---!! i think leaving metallica by 10:30 should still get you up front in time.
my biggest debate is the levon is playing the same time as jack johnson and kanye---jack i don't really care about, i'll see him again this summer....kanye i'll never have another chance (as i wouldn't pay money to see him) and levon is just a legend---and on a smaller stage which is cool...
my plan as of now is to check out Metallica for about an hour then head over to get a good spot for MMJ.

I'm not afraid to skip too much of it. It may be a 3-4 song swing-by for me, then head over early to camp out at MMJ. I'm not worried about passing out...I'm worried about not finding fungus for the amazing light show.

I'm staying until Levon excuses me. There's no telling who will be jamming with him, either! I missed him in Nashville last year and I thought I'd never forgive myself. I can't seem to be able to make it to Woodstock, either, for the Midnight Ramble Sessions, so that Bonnaroo night, I am all Levon's...well at least my ears are.

That was one of the albums that not only got me into heavy metal, but into music. I was crushed that I didn't hear a single song from it. Instead we got a song from St. Anger. :'(

Oh, dear Lord in heaven. I don't even have St. Anger on my iPod. In my little fantasy realm, the Metallica discography ends in 1991.

yeah if you have never seen Levon his set is not to be missed. i have never seen Zappa plays Zappa so i am going to do my best to split time between both even though I have seen Levon. Levon puts on an amazing live show.
i also want to check out Iron & Wine. easily one of my biggest conflicts with this years schedule.

U really expecting that much stuff from Kill em All man?! Id think they would play Seek & Destroy, but I wouldnt expect much else...Id expect a handful of black album, a few of Justice and Lightning each, and probably at least a few from both load and reload
I saw them 10 years ago roughly, and I dont remember anything besides S&D, if they even played that
Unless they've done something about Which Stage, I'm gonna leave Metallica pretty early. Anybody remember the Flaming Lips last year? It was packed at least an hour before the show.
All I'm saying is that at the Roo '06, I skipped Tom Petty entirely and got to the MMJ tent at 8:30 to be on the gate. Wish I could gotten a taste of the Heartbreakers, but it was sooooooo worth it.
I waited for Stevie Nicks, then I left. Didn't get anywhere close to the front, though. Sadddd.

I plan to see Levon too then head over to Jack. I expect Levon to kick ass,I just grabbed his new disc, great stuff. I would love to see Zappa but Levon aint going to be around forever, see him while you can.
As far as Metallica, I've been a fan since 1984 when I was a Freshman in high school, but have had a hard time with all the post And Justice For All stuff. Just my two cents, but as someone else said, they never disappoint live, so I think I will try to see the first half, and i have already read that they will not be playing any new material. I expect lots of old stuff, perhaps stick as far back in the crowd as possible so I can escape and dash to MMJ.
leave early if you want a good spot, mmj>metallica. why the fuck is metallica headlining bonnaroo. weak weak weak and wsp. at least the late nights are crazy and friday and saturday look pretty jam packed. it'll be fun though, Metallica is going to bust a nut if there's a glow stick war, they'll patent it and we'll never be able to have them again.
Here is the setlist they played just about 1 month ago. It was for a benefit and Flea(RHCP) played with them. I'd not skip out too early as Chris Rock is playing between the 2 bands. How funny can comedy be when delivered to 150,000 people? This is one helluva setlist!!!!!

I plan on leaving Metallica early. How early? I don't know.
Maybe we should all just form one big group before the Metallica show starts? That'd be hilarious for Metallica to see a mass exodus as the Jacketeers take their leave.
Don't get too emo on us. The songs you've crossed out kinda show your lack of knowledge about their catalog as a whole. Don't forget that there has NEVER been a better speed/heavy metal band. Last Carress is a classic Misfits song, too. I'll be the 1st to dog on Metallica for their poor effort over the past 10 years but their early stuff is that of legends. I can't think of a band that i am more hopeful for a turnaround and reclaimation of their previous greatness. yeah i can...
1. Metallica
2. Butthole Surfers
3. Tool
Dig these lyrics. This is classic...
I got something to say
I killed your baby today
And it doesnt matter much to me
As long as its dead
Well I got something to say
I raped your mother today
And it doesnt matter much to me
As long as she spread
Sweet lovely death
I am waiting for your breath
Come sweet death, one last caress
Go
Sweet lovely death
I am waiting for your breath
Come sweet death, one last caress
Well, I got something to say
I killed your baby today
And it doesnt matter much to me
As long as its dead
Sweet lovely death
I am waiting for your breath
Come sweet death
One last caress
One last caress, sweet death
One last caress, sweet death
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
It's a love song, huh?

That's funny!
i too have hope or the future of Metallica, the last cd was a valiant effort but not having bass player and having Bob Rock play bass was just a spoiler, plus his style of over production has grown stale.
Rick Rubin is doing this one, if he can save Tom Jones, he can save Metallica.
I hope Van Halen can get rick rubin to produce a new cd. Anyway, the lack of new stuff totally changes things for me, they will tour heavily after the new CD comes out. I can get a taste and split early it would seem and be pretty safe, so thats where Im am leaning.

Depends on how much you like Metallica. Me personally if I was going (went the last 2 years, missing this one) I would leave Metallica before the encore and run like hell to My Morning Jacket for a good spot.
Bonnaroo if you plan and have patience you can be on the rail for any show!
I definately think this show is going to be amazing. Is there a live webcast?

you are so right. that was temporary insanity--i just figured since i'd never pay to see kanye (who, btw, will probably put on an awesome show) whereas i want to make a trip upstate to see Levon at his home--and he tours a lot this summer so i figured i'd see him again- but you're right, he is a legend and won't be around that much longer. i will def see the full force of levon

Huh? Metallica is one of the biggest bands in the WORLD. Just so you know. Even though I dont "get off" on them, I am so fuckin excited to see them. I was just on the Bonnaroo web site and there are people flying in from Europe, Asia, Aust, S.A. just to see these guys. If people are willing to do that kinda shit, I want to join them for all the fun!
See ya'll in a week!
Additionally, Kanye West is supposedly putting on one of the best live shows now. I'm not against rap music. In fact, I consider myself included in the 1st generation of white boys raised on Rap Music.
Levon is also playing twice that weekend. Once on a big stage and again on a small stage.
I'd say , check out Kanye. You might be surprised.
Jack Johnson is like saltines & milk. BLAND!!
As far as Metallica goes, I was mistaken about Chris Rock playing between them. That's a toughy. I guess I'd leave early. You gotta weigh your choices.
Question:
Are you going to see MMJ again this year?
Do you give 2 shits about Metallica?
MMJ is known for spectacular sets @ BONER-ooo so i think, being that we are who we are, we wouldn't be FANatics if we skipped 2 seconds of MMJ to catch anyone else.

Well, I havent listened to Metallica really for about 8 years or so now, but Im surprised by how old school those setlists are looking..maybe trying to win back some old school fans?
But I must say, I just remembered the song Bleeding Me and that very well might be my favorite 90s-present Metallica tune..that song, while not the speed metal of early days, is anthematic and I remember not at first giving any respect but after not skipping it or really listening to it, it rocked.
It made me just listen to some clips from Load and Reload, and while theyre by no means great, I think Metallica got thrashed for them a little more than necessary in retrospect. Theyre still very good rock albums
So, did you leave Metallica's set early?

QuoteSo, did you leave Metallica's set early?

Those who did, could hear the songs very clearly from the Which Stage while waiting on MMJ. You could see the fireworks, too!
Yes I did leave Metallica about 3/4 of the way thru and I got on the right of the ramp but didn't get as up close as I would have liked. Metallica was doing such a great set, it was pretty tough to leave.
However it is true it was practically as clear over in front of the Which Stage. I did even head back to my spot in VIP during the break to grab some rain gear and didn't miss more than a few minutes and could hear the tunes perfect as I ran, so I was so glad they took a break. I was lucky, I was camped right outside the VIP entrance so I came and went at will. I had such a great camp site. VIP was pretty touch and go overall, not sure I'll do it again, but I did take advantage while I was there of the close campsite.
It was amazing that the rain fell right at the start of the set, it seemed almost staged it was so perfect.
I think in retrospect, anyone who missed evven 2 seconds of the MMJ epic performance to catch the end of Metallica missed out. Metallica came of as desperate and needy.
"Metallica Loves You, Bonnaroo!"
Metallica is(was) violent speed metal. they really shouldn't love anyone.
Meh.
really? i talked to longtime metallica fans who'd seen them live over 20 times and they all said this was the performance of a lifetime for them...they were smart enough to play all their old stuff and they sounded like they were rockin out...i wouldn't have given up my near front row position for MMJ for anything, but i'm bummed it cost me metallica especially after what i heard

Well, Metallica had been my favorite band since 1986 (when I got
Master of Puppets on vinyl, but they are no longer my favorite band. I have seen Metallica five times, during tours for Master, Black, Load, and St. Anger (x2) prior to seeing them at the Bonnaroo set. I was thoroughly disappointed by the Bonnaroo set. For one, most of James' banter was prewritten and nearly verbatim to previous concert banter (see their recent show in Poland for a very similar transcript). It was a turn-off that Metallica soundchecked for nearly twelve hours and had an army of about 40 soundcheckers. Kirk and Robert seemed to have a good time, but James and Lars appeared businesslike and robotic. The setlist was especially disappointing to me. Lars had voiced that they would play several new songs, and they did not. The set was very similar to the Polish show. I also have a problem with their overreliance on older material, with Metallica playing only 1 song ("The Memory Remains") off of their last four albums (if you include disc 1 of
Garage Inc.. I will say that I was quite impressed with Kirk's guitar playing as he nailed several solos (especially during 'fade to black' and 'nothing else matters') that were problematic for him in the past. I feel as if Metallica did nothing to make the Bonnaroo show special and unique from other Metallica shows. It bothers me that Metallica would completely disown their last four studio albums. I have bought every Metallica album, since
...And Justice For All on the day of release, but I will not buy their Rick Rubin-advised effort. I have deleted all their albums and live shows (at least a dozen shows) from my iPod. I will retire my nine Metallica shirts (well, maybe I'll sleep in a few), and I will never again attend a Metallica concert. I skipped Willie Nelson's set in order to work my way up near the rail for the Metallica set. While at the rail, I had to provide security and fend off over-aggressive asshole Metallica fans to protect a young (maybe 12 years old) fan with his middle-aged parents and a Metallica fan who required a walker in order to remain upright. The Metallica crowd provided the only hostile fans that I encountered during all of Bonnaroo (and, being a veteran of hundreds of metal, punk, $ hardcore shows, I have seen some intolerant crowds). Overall, I found the Bonnaroo attendees to be quite peaceful and full of fun energy. I wish that I would have skipped Metallica's set, bought a Bonnaroo raincoat, and gotten a spot close enough to twirl glowsticks and acquire one of the free lucky suckers. Hell, all the Metallica that I needed to see was Kirk Hammett joining My Morning Jacket for "One Big Holiday." I will make sure that the next time that My Morning Jacket plays at Bonnaroo (which I hope is in 2009), that I skip whoever plays before them and get me a spot near the front so I can dance the night away, and hopefully they'll cover "How The Gods Kill." Anyway, Metallica will remain filthy rich and wildly popular. Many will cherish their Metallica Bonnaroo memories. For me, I have dumped Metallica. I will now devote those listening hours to far better music, like Abigal Washburn, My Morning Jacket, and Werewolph. Pearl Jam slaughtered Metallica, anyway. Oh well, at least Kirk joined other bands. I hope he leaves the band and pursues his blues dreams, maybe playing guitar with Tom Waits.
QuoteI will now devote those listening hours to far better music, like Abigal Washburn.
I've not heard any of Abigail Washburn's work outside of the Sparrow Quartet, but I love that group.

I feel as if Metallica did nothing to make the Bonnaroo show special and unique from other Metallica shows. It bothers me that Metallica would completely disown their last four studio albums. I have bought every Metallica album, since ...And Justice For All on the day of release, but I will not buy their Rick Rubin-advised effort.
Man, that sucks that your favorite band let you down in such a way. It looks like you've found some closure with it, though. It doesn't seem like you're too bitter about it, which is cool, you've just moved on. Thanks for sharing.
