So... who's heading up/down/over to DC for the show on Sepember 3?
The venue looks pretty awesome, being a historic building and all, and only a block or so away from the White House. That being said, I've read some not so favorable reviews about their policies (ie: no drinks at your seats, policy of maintaining a seated position).
Well, all that means is that we'll drink before the show, and I don't think I physically can sit down during an MMJ show.

The venue's not great. but MMJ will still rock it! I'll be there.
Im real worried about the venue. Bunch of reviews I read said the ushers actually try to keep you seated. That wont fly...not one bit...
thats a sweet poster.
I'll be wearing this then, just to piss off the people behind me

Saw Oysterhead 'bout 7 years ago there. It's a beautiful venue but the acoustics left something to be desired. Hopefully they won't keep the volume down too much. As for the ushers, well they can't keep 4000 people seated at once can they!!?? :D
Ah!!! I was at that Oysterhead show. Man, I'd like to see those guys again. That project was too short lived IMO.
"the grand pecking order"! :D

I'll be there 3rd row center, just try to keep me seated!!
i'll be in the eleventh row. i've never had any issues with the ushers trying to keep the crowd seated when i've been there for ween and morissey and neil young. the sound can be a little shitty though. i've never to this bar before, but i was gonna grab a pre-show drink at a place across from the white house called "off the record." it doesnt look like a type of place a concert-goer would drink in, but it couldn't be more appropriately named

Ha! Yeah, I'm gonna roll in with my jean shorts and my Run Thru my Peanut Butter Pudding Surprise tank top. I think they'll serve me immediately. Hope it's OK that I won't have a coat to have them hold for me.
I'm thinking War Begun has to be played in the Nation's Capital. only a couple of blocks from the White House. It is now in the rotation on this tour.

While they're at it, might as well chuck in Rocket Man :-X
Venue is beautiful, but no drinks at your seats and the ushers have, in fact, tried to keep people seated at prior shows (not to mention the jerkbag who yelled at me to sit down during Neil Young's encore last year). DC is full of duds.
22.5 hours, friends.
Any thoughts as to whether we'll get an abbreviated setlist like they saw in Miami? I haven't checked the shows since Miami, but we got 28 or 29 at the four shows I've seen since Nashville.
If you see someone rocking an eye patch, that's me. I have a massive stye (blech!) and I'm afraid they'll make me buy a ticket for it if I don't cover it up!
I think I'll rock my Ryan Adams shirt with the huge rose on the front and tour dates from last fall on the back, in case anyone wants to say 'hello.' I'll also be at the Philly show.
I'll be wearing a Phillies shirt of some sort as usual, probably not the infamous blue one. Maybe the 2007 division champs one, to rub it in the face of any Nats fans that will be in attendance. Come on guys, only 24 games back!
C'mon, somebody else wear an eye patch for solidarity...and sympathy. :'(

That's too funny, Sass. The last time I saw MMJ (Bonnaroo) I had just *stopped* wearing my eye patch (I got a gnarly piece of rust in my eye while working on the bus).
my plane leaves at 11 am tomorrow, cant wait for the show 3rd row center woohoo!!
No bar at this place...dont imagine them being smoke friendly lol
the drinkins to be done on the outskirts. there's a bar downstairs, a couple others around the periphery, but nothing's 'loud at yr seat. its iffy in that sense, but against all odds, the jacket will prevail

Constitution Hall is without a doubt the worst venue in Washington DC.
Its inconvenient to the metro, bars, parking, no drinks at seats, sound sucks, ushers suck.
And, it's not beautiful. Its an assembly hall.
That being said, everybody is having drinks at a bar called "The bottom line" on 17th & I sts. NW (right across the street from the Farragut West metro) starting at 5:00

As you should be.
The venue seems to be in a business district so parking garages and on street shouldn't be too hard to find.
Why are you afraid of driving in DC?
Get there early and there will be plenty of street parking.

righton, you couldn't be more correct. i would almost prefer to see them play at the verizon center, but when life gives you lemons...
see you there.
Is there an easy way to find setlists for MMJ? They come on a 8pm? How long do they usually run? Will they do things differently since they're playing at what everyone seems to say is a lousy venue?
-Still pumped for the show either way!

There is a link to their setlist archive at the top of the "The Shows" page
They'll come on at 8, play for close to 2 hours including encore
They've been mixing up setlists a little here and there this tour but if you see any setlist from so far this tour, thats kind of what you should be expecting
Althought the venue may be lousy in my opinion it is still very historic, add that to being 200 yards from the White House..... they're going to tear the roof off the place.
leaving now, i will be the tan dude in the black Radiohead Crew t-shirt, jeans, and loud sneakers!
Well, I've seen more than two hours in the last couple of weeks (Nashville, Louisville, Red Rocks and Dallas). I hope we don't get an abbreviated set due to curfew. I haven't checked setlists for other shows, but mine were 28-29-28-29 (not necessarily in that order). Miami's was only 21, but I heard someone on the Wilco forum said the Miami venue was only half full. Fools!
DAR is a dud as far as venues are concerned. If you park in a garage, make sure you find out what time it closes because the majority of them close early (11ish). You can and will find street parking if you get there when DCers are leaving for work.
Thx for the setlist guidance....looks like One Big Holiday is their Freebird song where they have it locked in as their last encore song...at least in the last 5 or 6 shows that I checked.

I would say for what it is, it is actually very beautiful. I saw PJ there in 1998.
Just saw the Crowes at Wolftrap and a bunch of fans were completely bitching about that place...the security, etc. I'm like, are you kidding me? Wolftrap and DAR and flatout awesome....sure it might be a little uptight but I really appreciate the fact that I get top see my fav bands in such beautiful settings....it adds to the vibe, IMO.
Holy Moses! Tonight's show smoked!!!
And, for some unknown reason, they allowed people to bring drinks to their seats. Security was non existent in my area (row 6 Jim's side).
I wish I had grabbed a setlist...figured that someone would have already posted it.
Well, I'm bad with song titles, but we did get War Begun!! I've gotta pull out CD sleeves for the other gems we got tonight!
The band was ON! And yay! on bringing drinks to your seat, but boo! on the venue running out of beer.
I continue to be disappointed by how positively lackluster DC audiences are. I could've sworn I smelled embalming fluid. MOVE, PEOPLE!!!
Just got back to Philly...some quick notes...
-I heard a lot of worries that the acoustics sucked at the venue, but they were absolutely incredible. Possibly the best sound Ive heard at an MMJ show, including Radio City.
-The crowd was horrid. A lot of suits and uninterested people. I knew it was bad when guy behind me said to his girlfriend "Well, I know the singer is named Jim Jones, and they sound a bit like Maroon 5". They left after 3 songs.
-The band was in jam mode tonight. Songs were stretched and pulled and played seemingly forever. Off the Record was a 9 minute jame, and i LOVE the new solos at the end of War Begun. Dondante was mind blowing with an extended Carl sax solo.
-Met the band (minus Patrick, who was "chillin' with family", according to Bo) and got pics with Carl and Jim. Bo and Carl were really cool and talked for a few seconds about the acoustics in the venue. Talked to Tommy and mentioned that Bo really kicked ass tonight, and that got a big smile out of him; "Yeah, he was fucking on, huh?". Not to sound cheesy but I shook Jims hand and told him thanks, and that what he does means a lot to me. He seemed genuinely humble and thankful. He actually seemed pretty shy compared to his stage demeanor.
GivenToFly got some amazing pics, and sure he'll put them up tomorrow. Great show, as always. about 40 hours 'till Philly :D

I agree with the crowd being horrid for the most part. I find that a lot with venues where it is seating. 930 Club would have been much better, but would have not allowed nearly as many fans in.
Thanks to the 11 p.m. parking time, my friend and I had to get out after "Highly Suspicious." I am seeing them again Friday, so I'll deal with it. At least I got to see "Cobra" and "War Begun."
Those that bashed this venue must have been there for an Opera or something.... Because the venue was nothing short of perfect.
Drinks abound in the seats, people dancing in the aisles, perfect sound (i too thought it was comperable to RCMH), and the staff was extremely freindly!
The show was awesome as always! And of course, there is one glowstick guy in every crowd ;D
I was on the floor in row FF and the show was a great time, but I just don't like seated events where you can't move up close or anything. The band was spot on - I just felt I had more fun - speaking about the crowd - in '06 at the 930 Club. Just my opinion.
QuoteThose that bashed this venue must have been there for an Opera or something.... Because the venue was nothing short of perfect.
You must not go to a lot of venues.
I will say that I've seen plenty of shows at Constitution Hall and last night, being able to bring drinks to your seats, was a very welcome first.
Although the constant 60 person drink line at every bar was insane and unnecessary.
They always fail at that place.
That show was f*ng amazing. This was me and my wife's first MMJ concert as we had to bail on the last one because of moving to down to this D.C. area. At firsts I had to admit I was a little concerned for the beginning two songs... straight album cuts, glossy-perfect, but admirable... then Off the Record got going and we started feeling the band's energy.
I think that energy just kept rolling tighter and stronger right until the encore. And what a great freakin encore! Fantastic list and unmatchable energy from everyone! Did you hear those screams from Jim!? Awesome pipes, man! Seriously, without a double encore, I've never seen anyone do 6 songs in one encore.
Sure the crowd in D.C. will always be a little reserved, but we showed our love in encouraging the encore and there was still plenty of people grooving. Overall, the lights (dude controlling that is GOOD), the stage show, the quality, the energy... it was all top notch. We are live MMJ show fans forever. Doesn't mean much to you, but to me especially, I can say that I like all live shows but I don't LOVE most of them like I love a good Crowes or Phish show and I LOVE the MMJ show... speaking for my wife (who's seen more classical concerts her whole life than any other type of live performance.. btw, she IS the sexiest librarian! ::)) she's a convert too. Totally smokin!! :D
Quote

Completely agree. He was rather shy when we met him in Nashville...very friendly, but shy. It's such a pleasure to meet people with such incredible talent and have them be...normal!
The DC crowd is always disappointing, not only at DAR. I've been to plenty of shows at 9:30 Club where I look around in amazement and wonder if I have the only pulse in the room. Now, I'm not particularly outgoing or prone to bouts of hyperactivity, nor am I much of a dancer. When I'm one of the few in the crowd who is gregarious and shaking my hind end, it's beyond disappointing.
Philly tomorrow! It'll be my 9th show since March and I can't wait. Too much is never enough. :)
Holy. Shit.
What an amazing show at DC. Let me start off by saying I started off with tickets in the next to last row in the place, then upgraded to 3rd row "obstructed view" seats. With a little luck, this is what are view actually was...

Hey Dan, thats a great pic of you with Jim. The photographer really knew what he was doing. Genius, some may say. ;D
you'd thinkthat since the crowd drank the place dry of beer, they wouldn't be so goshdarn uptight. we had seats way up in the back corner and i couldn't believe how still most everyone kept. 't'wasn't right. i have such a hard time containing myself when this band performs that i'm always taken aback when i see people so rigid. all 'n all, i didn't ultimately care. my friends and i were having ourselves a time! this was by far my best DAR experience though. the sound was clear and the boys just flat out RAWKED!! i'm digging jim's cape.

Yeah, I was stunned by how passive the crowd was. There was a woman next to us, in the front row, with her back to the stage. I thought maybe they should get her on stage because she was obviously the coolest motherfucker in the room.
All our rocking out in the midst of the too-cool was worth it though; as they left the stage Carl (who we were directly in front of) pointing to the two of us, smiled, and bowed. So the crowd was awful but as you pointed out they sounded fucking excellent, especially Bo. Ive never heard him so loud or so tight, he was unbelievable. The keys during Steam Engine were downright Floyd-esque.
hey j_rud i was with you last night! i was with my friend Ali and i waited for the guys after the show and then we made you walk us to our car.
i was speechless after lasts night show. It was amazing. my jim james curse is gone!!
Thanks for the reviews guys!
So normally you can't bring drinks to your seats? What the fuck is that all about? Is it run by Mormons? Are the seats made of silk?
Seriously, we cannot stand by and allow for people to think they can get away with such a horrible policy. What kind of country do we live in, where a man or woman can't sustain their buzz while in a sitting position. Outrageous! This must be discussed at the first presidential debate!

Haha, hey! It was nice to meet you guys. Everyone in that little group of 9 or 10 people was really cool. Did you get to meet everyone? I didnt get home until 3:15 lol.
I agree with "j-rud" amazing show, very much like RCMH last June. I'm a long time fan of MMJ had have travelled to see them whenever I can, and this show one of their better ones. I'm sick and tired of people moaning about DAR and other venue's just go to the show, dance, jump around and have a good time. Don't worry if you can bring your drinks to the seat or if you can't stand in the aisle, it will all work out.
I got to DAR at 4pm on Wednesday and got to meet Jim, Tommy & Carl, very nice to me, talked, got a photo with Jim etc etc, ask Carl for a photo but he ask me "do you mind if I don't I'm not feeling so cool today" sure I don't mind was my reply, he said "thanks". I waited & waited for Bo & Patrick but them never turned up, must have bben inside, doors open at 7pm sharp, and it took for ever for DAR to fill up, but I did not mind, i ahd my seats & was happy like a pig in shit !! MMJ came on at 8.25pm and played, & played & played, it was amazing, highlists for me were Golden, Dondante, Cobra & Run Thru, but serious very song was perfect. I agree with a few of the other people that posted here that ther was a big mixed of people, aged 20's, 30's 40's & even older, nothing wrong with that, but if I were a beting man I would bet that 70% there last night it was their first time and did not know how to handle the songs, how to behave etc etc, but that's ok, Welcome Newbies
Show finished at 11pm approx so I went back outside to meet the band again to get my two (copied) set list from RCMH signed by Bo & Patrick, they were my last two remaining members I needed, so while there I meet "j-rud" and "Youare_GivenToFly" two boys like me that travel to see MMJ anywhere. Nice to have meet you guys. (Irish dude), while there there was this other guy saying that the band had too come out & sign our material as he said "its a business for the band" "they have to please the fan'safterwards" what a "tool" it was his first time there & he did not know the way things go. I know "j-rud" was not happy with this guy !!!
Anyway Tommy came out and then shortly Jim, Carl & Bo, but no sign of Patrick, well everyone then left (fans) once they got 4 autographs, but I waited & waited & waited until 1.30am for Patrick, and finally Bo got off the bus and told me that he would go inside to the venue and have Patrick sign my two set lists, and surely he did, even writing "Go Ireland" on the top of it. That was very nice of Bo, he did not need to do that but I guess that what MMJ are really like, just down to earth guys that don't see it as a business.
So off to C/ville for tonights show, hoping to get there early again to see if I can meet them again.
Respect to J-rud & Youare_GivenToFly

Like that they played Gideon later only if for the reason that it was different and not having a 1, 2, 3 Z start.
The Steam Engine close was sick, didn't get Evelyn, and was my preferred final 3 tracks in that order, at least for this tour.
As for the tall lady in the 6th row, glad you were there because not may else were rockin' out the way we were in our section. I won't even get into the sitting down in the 7th row text messaging and inability to nod your head during a song let alone rock out.
On a acoustics note, this show sounded better than the last DAR show and more to the point, was louder. (we were in front of the speakers) Its seems that the show got louder as it went on and that was good thing. Anything to give them a kick in the ass!
QuoteQuoteQuote
7th row outside aisle, JJames side. Have fun at "Off the Record". Looks like a rocker's dream! ;)
Uh-oh...how tall are you?
I'm in row 6 on the aisle on JJ's side and rather tall without additional head gear.
I believe I figured out who you are are and it was no problems at all.
;D
I was a little relieved when I looked behind me and saw two women, not that I wanted to block their view either. I think I moved around enough that they were able to see just fine. :)
So how did the posters go over?
QuoteI agree with "j-rud" amazing show, very much like RCMH last June.
Hey, good to see you posting. It was great to meet you and your cousin, we MMJ nomads share a common bond lol.
As for that gentleman, I wasnt trying to be rude and I understood his perspective, but when he said "well speaking from a business standpoint they really should" I was pretty bummed. I had just experienced catharsis, a damn life affirming experience, and you wanna talk about the bands obligations to us as businessmen? It just seemed vulgar. Like I said, the band has given more to me than I could ever give to them.
Cant believe you waited around that long for Patrick! Pretty damn awesome that Bo came out and did that for you. They all seemed really down to earth though, so it doesnt surprise me. I hope your friend appreciates that gift, its absolutely amazing.
Again, it was good to meet you. Maybe we'll run into each other again further down the trail.
Nice to have meet you and your friend, your truly MMJ fans driving from Philly to DC to see them. I was jealous that you got to see them in L/ville, would have loved to gone to that show....
I hope we will meet again
oh how do I post picture I want to show you the set list ??
QuoteThanks for the reviews guys!
Outrageous! This must be discussed at the first presidential debate!
;D
Last night was only my 2nd time at DAR. First show there was Ryan Adams and the Cards. Sitting down was strictly enforced. There was a woman who got out of her seat in the 4th row, walked out to the edge of a doorway to dance, and they made her sit down. For that show,
no drinks were allowed inside the venue. They did allow us to stand up for the encore.
Last night, I felt like I was in the twi-light zone. I had a friend who bought a ticket on the street, didn't even know where her seat was, but walked down to say hello to me about midway through the show. From there, and right in front of security, she slid into row 2 on the aisle. ;D The her roommate came up. For the encore, 3 more friends came down from section G and slid into row 4 center...drinks, cameras, and all.
The Whigs are playing there soon. I was going to see them in Baltimore instead, but now I wonder if I should take my chances with DAR.
Anyhow, great show last night. Anybody see or hear from CTDeadhead?
My first MMJ show and it was glorious... rocked out from start to finish in spite of the crowd who barely mustered an appendage movement beyond the head bob. Good god this town is buttoned up. You'd think we were screening Terms of Endearment. I've lived in DC for seven years and can't get over how lame the "hipster" scene is here. Going to a concert like MMJ should be an experience, not a viewing. While I enjoyed every minute -- particularly Gideon -- the crowd affected the experience. This isn't the first time I've been to a show where people were terrified of enjoying themselves -- Wilco in Baltimore a few years back was like attending a lecture -- people just stared.
I won't miss another MMJ show in the area, but maybe a smaller venue will squeeze out the drones. I'm embarrassed for my town that that was all we could muster for a fantastic show.

If you look in the post reply box there are a bunch of icons on top. Top row, 3rd icon from the left is a little picture. Click on that and it brings up your BB Code brackets. Just paste the address between the brackets and it should work.

HAHAHAHA. I'll be using that one instead of my usual "I smell embalming fluid." :)
any tapers in the house??
Quote Anybody see or hear from CTDeadhead?
I met him at Radio City before the show and didn't even know it was him! I talked to him for a long time actually. Was he at the DC show?

Wow, how much did you have to drink that night?!?!?!?! ;)
My 1st MMJ show...loved it!!! JJ's voice was on big time! Sounded beautiful! The band sounded tight! Excellent light show!
-DAR's so-so...not a lotta energy in the crowd...4 beverage lines for ~3,500 people? stinks....no food...running out of beer. It's pretty in there, but so what? If they play here again, I might not make it down...but not to take away from the band's performance...it rocked!!!!!
-Saw the Bridge play in College Park after this show at the Santa Fe Cafe and the crowd energy was through the roof!

Does anyone know the songs they were playing before they went on? I was talking to a guy, saying it was the remakes of miles davis silent in the way, im just trying to figure out if the songs right, great time last night. cant wait till the next time

Just got back, WOW what a show. I spent the night in Baltimore and my flight just got in. I got there about 430 and the buses were already there so I decided to cruise around the block a few times to find a parking spot on the street. Found a spot directly in front of the buses right outside the venue. I hung out hoping to catch a glimpse of the band but I figured they were inside there seemed like no activity so I went across the street to the park and met a few locals there had a great time. It was a beautiful day to hand out in the park.
My seat was 3rd row, center section directly in front of Carl. I totally forgot a camera, what a fool I am! But i have some good camera phone shots, I personally found the venue very enjoyable. Drinks were allowed at seats, but it seemed a little uptight, didn't see any tokers or tapers. but I agree with some that the crowd seemed a little tranquilized at some points and the place was about 3/4 full so that surprised me a bit. There were no bars in the area but I didn't wander too far, I was soaking up the sun.
But they got better as the night went on. War Begun was a treat and my personal fav was Dondonte watching Carl jam on the sax up close is a mesmerizing experience. I am so tempted to drive to philly tomorrow, but I will be in Boston can't wait for that show!!! Woo Hoo!!
Oh another thing, I forgot to hit the ATM before the show and the one inside was broken. But there was a couple of new shirts, a keychain, a pin, several new stickers and an Evil Urges Hoodie. Bring some cash if you are going to a show. I will be stocking up in Boston.
Speaking of which: the poster for the show, and the variant, is available at our store http://www.eljefedesign.com/store/index2.html

GivenToFly and I were 2 rows in front of you. We probably werent hard to spot, we were the only 2 guys in the row treating the experience with the reverence it deserves, which is to say we were rocking our asses off.
I was wearing a Langerado shirt from 2007. Were you the dudes they moved over from the extreme side of the stage? They let people into the front rows from the sides as there were stacks of speakers in the way?
QuoteI was wearing a Langerado shirt from 2007. Were you the dudes they moved over from the extreme side of the stage? They let people into the front rows from the sides as there were stacks of speakers in the way?
I was the guy who commented on your shirt after the show lol. Yeah, that was GivenToFly and I that they let up front. We were in the 3rd row so it wasnt actually obstructed for us, but I wasnt about to complain.
the band was great. the crowd was not. regardless, it was an awesome show. 20 rows back in the middle. i have a severe case of whiplash from all the 'banging. "war begun." "cobra," and "steam engine" were personal higlights, though the entire show was awesome. a first-timer female friend of mine couldn't stop boogying all night. and that encore was mind-boggling.
wish i could go to charlottesville tonight, but i already took two days off of school to attend last night, meaning it probably wouldnt be in my best interest to do so. anyone who is going to see them from this point out: i'm jealous.
Are you the big dude with the curley hair? Cool, I would've stuck around but it was a drive back to my hotel I wish I realized it was you guys. I have to start asking people at shows if they are on the board, I generally assume the number of people on this board makes the odds of seeing people in real life nearly impossible, I've found out twice now thats not true.

Yeah, thats me lol, the big hairy dude. Yeah, I definitely wished I knew it was you. You should have stuck around, you missed the guy trying to lecture me on managing a business and why it was in the bands best interest to come sign autographs, because "we're the ones who make it happen for them".

I picked up #142 at the show. It is a fantastic poster.
Yes, WHAT A SHOW! Ears are still ringing...
First time seeing them live, so a newbie. Big fan for years through CDs, the DVD, and Youtube clips. Also there's a great vid of them on a PASTE magazine DVD from years back: One Big Holiday at some fest, probably Bonnaroo.
I've been hunting around here -- any set list up for last night's DAR show? I know it will be up eventually on another thread, but is it up now?
Dug the entire show, but must say that 3/4's back the sound was way distorted when they really rocked out, around 9:30 or so the sound went south. If it was good to one point, my thoughts were that the sound person (p.c.) did something. Overall, one of the best shows I've ever been to for any artist, including U2 and Foo Fighters. MMJ are top-notch musicians, but you didn't need me to tell you that. Peaz

Hello, this is that gentleman (not a "tool", dude).
I'm sorry I bummed you out by talking about how a band like MMJ has built and maintained an obviously strong fanbase. I certainly didn't mean to be vulgar, and I'm sorry if you took my comments that way. I've seen many, many concerts by different artists and waited after to meet them. Most are nice. However, I've also seen shows where the artists don't take the time to maintain a relationship with fans, particularly hardcore fans, who'll wait around as we did to tell the artist how much their music means to them.
I am a professional event manager, by the way, and I deal with the logistics of tour management and booking talent every day. It's what I do for a living and, yes, My Morning Jacket makes a living mostly by touring and selling merchandise. I was happy to wait until after midnight to meet the guys in the band and I will happily frame my event poster next to my other autographs. I especially enjoyed talking with a few other folks in our group, though in retrospect not the guy who thinks I'm a "tool" just because I have a broader perspective than maybe he does. I also had a transcendent experience and I will enjoy MMJ's music and other live performances for years to come.

You present it that way and its not an issue, but you were throwing around words like "obligation" and saying that the band "owes everything to the fans". I cant speak for anyone other than myself, but Im willing to venture a guess that those opinions are probably in the minority.

I agree with you on the sound. People said they thought the acoustics were fine at DAR, but I've generally not been impressed at the sound of any show I've seen there and thought the acoustics weren't that great from row T.

I don't recall using those terms, but, if I did, you might've misunderstood me. I meant that, yes, in a financial sense, a mid-size band like MMJ not a major label (and thus without marketing muscle to push a single or heavily promote material) *does* owe a lot to hardcore fans who will repeatedly see shows (not just one) and buy not just one CD but all of them, including the demo CDs I believe I asked you about. Because they took the time to come out to that bus and I could meet and thank them, they created a satisfied customer. Sorry if phrasing it like that annoys or upsets you, but, from a business perspective, in addition to just being cool, they did the right thing.
I'm not really sure we have anything to argue about, however. We both agree it was a great show, the guys were great to come out and meet us afterwards, and we'll both continue buying their music and seeing their shows. It's a win win situation for the band and the fans.
It's all good, friend. Cheers.

Just so I don't leave the impression I'm some cold number$ person, I will share this: I picked up my wife from the library where she works (yes, she's a librarian!) one night a few months back. While I was driving us home, I switched on the CD and "Golden" was playing (I had just gotten It Still Moves a day or so earlier.) Right during that song, my wife felt our first baby, due in November, kick. That was the first time she'd felt a kick when I was with her (a month earlier, she called me and said she felt a kick and I was at the REM concert at Merriweather Post).
So everytime I hear MMJ and "Golden" especially (one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard), I think of that memory I'll one day share with my daughter years from now when she's going through my CD collection sometime in the 2020s. Ha.
QuoteQuoteAre you the big dude with the curley hair? Cool, I would've stuck around but it was a drive back to my hotel I wish I realized it was you guys. I have to start asking people at shows if they are on the board, I generally assume the number of people on this board makes the odds of seeing people in real life nearly impossible, I've found out twice now thats not true.
Yeah, thats me lol, the big hairy dude. Yeah, I definitely wished I knew it was you. You should have stuck around, you missed the guy trying to lecture me on managing a business and why it was in the bands best interest to come sign autographs, because "we're the ones who make it happen for them".
LOL, GiventoFly you looked as red in the eye as I was. Funny as heck me sitting next to you guys. i could tell you guys were hardcores, I saw you during the show you were the only peeps around that seemed to know the words, let alone the songs. Matter of fact, the couple next to you was annoying me as they didn't stop talking the whole night. I couldn't hear them but how can you have a conversation in the front row of a concert? It boggles the mind....but this seems to be a point of growth for the band, so i guess its to be expected.
I actually considered hanging around trying to get an autograph it seemed possible with the buses right there, but all night long I was paranoid about parking my car on the street, it was a rental and I was unfamiliar with the surrounding area. Plus I figured I would get lost going back to Baltimore. remarkably i found my way quite easily.
FWIW i think bands signing autographs its extra cool, many many bands dont do it. Some atheletes are under contract only to do it for profit, so any band that takes time do meet fans is going the extra mile, IMHO.
Cant wait for Sat in Boston!!!!!!!
QuoteQuoteQuoteQuoteQuoteQuoteQuoteI agree with "j-rud" .

Cheers.

See! Now THATS the kind of stuff you talk about after a show!
Yep thats why I am taking my 13 Yo to the Boston show. Shes come to be quite a fan though so shes psyched.
Thanks, Sassbox! Just printed the Set List. Again, amazing show, everyone. People around me were dancing a some -- two girls especially - they stood about the whole show.
Not sure why people were so sedated (not up, dancing) overall... could be the mix of ages, but it was still a cool vibe, and the band, bottom-line, still put on a great performance.
Loved James' brief but interesting commentary during the show.

It's DC. I've NEVER seen anything like it.
Does anyone have Cliffnotes for some of these posts? (Just kidding!) ;D
w/ the stoic crowd, I would suggest that it's a combo of the venue and assigned seating, not so much DC. If there was a general admission type setup at a different venue, where hardcore fans could get to the front 1/3 of the floor if they chose to, they of course would be rockin out, and then radiate some high-energy vibes to the rest of the crowd. A lot of people/friends I saw/talked to weren't even from DC...they road tripped there.
DC crowds are pretty stiff in every venue here. It's really pathetic...my first couple of years living here, I was back in Philly or NYC for my live music needs. DC shows were just plain weird. I've gotten used to it now (4 years later) , but it's still a very lame place to experience live music.
But, that's not why I logged on. Here's the show review from the Post:
My Morning Jacket Lets Loose
My Morning Jacket finished with a six-song encore at Constitution Hall. (By Jim Cooper -- Associated Press)
Friday, September 5, 2008; Page C03
Jam band: The phrase can make even some of the most fervent alt- country/space rock/whatever-you-throw-at-me enthusiasts break out in hives. Most fans of My Morning Jacket, however, balk when that label is associated with their favorite Kentucky five-piece. It's true that MMJ has experimented wildly with its sound, taking a winding, Wilco-esque road from roots rock to synth-heavy psychedelia to the potluck randomness of its latest album, "Evil Urges."
But the group's 2 1/2 -hour performance Wednesday at Constitution Hall leaves no doubt: When you stretch out every other song on the set list to eight, nine, 10 minutes, you're kind of a jam band.
For those concertgoers who prefer their tunes short and sweet, parts of the show were patience-testing, especially considering that the group took the stage 30 minutes late. Good thing, then, that these guys are crazy-talented: Singer Jim James in particular is a marvel. On this night he was rockin' a cape while his high tenor comfortably morphed from old-country croon ("Golden"), to Prince-like falsetto ("Highly Suspicious"), or straight-up wail ("Touch Me I'm Going to Scream, Pt. 2") -- and vocally defeating the venue's reliably tinny mix is no small accomplishment.
The latter two tracks, both from "Evil Urges," were highlights of a mind-blowingly textured and transportive six-song encore. After a set in which the group easily blended everything from funk to reggae to industrial into its repertoire, My Morning Jacket could be excused for taking its time.

Yes, and I almost shared that anecdote with Jim himself, but I didn't want to interrupt his being with another fan and I had to get home. Maybe at the next show.
Jim James commented in a cnn.com article last spring that, if the band quit touring, they'd all have to get "regular jobs" in a couple of months. You might want to keep being a fan and their business aspects separate, but, if you're interested in reading more about what it takes for a bands to make a legitimate living on the road, I'd recommend checking out "This business of concert promotion and touring : a practical guide to creating, selling, organizing, and staging concerts". Came out last year. It's a great, accessible read about what it really takes to succeed on the road. I find it professionally and personally interesting, but you may not.
Man seats were awesome and the show was awesome! I did, however, have some reservations about the setlist, particularly when I saw what they busted out in Charlottesville.
I'm glad that I got Cobra, War Begun and a KILLER STEAM ENGINE, but ya know, perhaps subtracting a Thank You Too or Sec Walkin for a TFire track would have been nice. Just me speakin. Plus no aluminum park or remnants from EU seemed odd.
Alas, tis what NYE is for...
As a general rule newspaper reviews are written by idiots. My local one is a total idiot. But this guy sounds especially stupid.
While some of the songs did go 8-10 minutes in length, I would hardly consider MMJ a "jam band." And I like jam bands. I felt like their performance and the songs were fairly structured, where they would sometimes stretch out a song by playing a 3-4 chord rendition over and over, building up with added bass, drums, lights, and some head/hair banging, with some tastey guitar added to it, but MMJ doesn't seem to go into long guitar jams or drum/space thingys. I agree that this writer seems a bit under-nurtured on the live music scene. MMJ to me w/ Z and Evil Urges have gone into a bigger target audience in the mainstream, where they're certainly unique wit their own identity, but like bands like Radiohead, not a jamband.
hi, everyone: thought it was a great show the other night. i blogged about it at digitalmetropolisblogDOTcom if you'd like to read it. the real downfall was (and has been) the god awful acoustics at constitution hall. but, i gotta say, it was a fantastic show over all. "touch me i'm going to scream" part 2 was fantastic.
7 minutes is a jam to this guy? He's never seen the grateful dead. phish is a jam band. Panic is a jam band. MMJ is a rock band. Led Zep never played a 7 minute jam? Mr Newspaper guy your industry is dying, get a better job.
