QuoteIs there not a way to buy online? only by phone or at the actual box office??
It says all TicketWanker outlets...that's online, no? :)
Dreams do come true.
I almost would rather go to this than RCMH. Less of a drive and without the hassle of NYC. I also wouldn't have to drive through Ohio or set foot in New Jersey.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I get Lollapalooza and then two weeks later, my Jacket fix. LIFE IS GOOD!!!
I'm speechless...
QuoteI'm speechless...
Is that a good speechless Kory?
Sweet. I'm glad they're playing the Great Lawn. It's GA which means you'll see me front row center! :)

i'm right there with ya brother...we camping out the night before!?!
Looks like the e-mail might have a bit of a clue of the artwork on the new website. That swan (?) is beautiful.
(It also tells me that I'm still not 100% convinced about the April 1st artwork.)
Hey, ticketmaster says:
presale begins:
Mon, 04/14/08 10:00 AM
(http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/841284)
that's in 10 minutes. anybody know how to do this?
can someone please fill me in on the scene at this venue?
capacity, surroundings? anything...
http://www.louisvillewaterfront.com/
I don't know how many tix they'll sell, but here's the city's site about the park, w/ pics.
As for my previous post, apparently you have to be a member of WFPK (local public radio) to get in on the pre-sale. I let my membership lapse :'(
Our local paper is reporting they will play for 3 hours for a charge of $33.50 a pop.

Don't worry. Plenty of space on the lawn. It's the GREAT lawn.

from an e-mail sent out by the production company (Production Simple):
My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges:
It's ambitious territory for the group's fifth full-length studio album, and it's matched by the most far-ranging, suprising, and satisfying sounds of their career. From the freak-funk electro-slam of "Highly Suspicious" to th contemplative "Sec Walkin' ", which could almost be a Nashville standard, on Evil Urges, My Morning Jacket display the scope and fearlessness that demonstrates their growth into one of the world's great rock & roll bands.
One key to attaining these new heights was a change of scenery. The band recorded their first three albums--the independent releases The Tennessee Fire (1999) and At Dawn (2001), and their 2003 ATO debut It Still Moves--in their home studio outside of Louisville, Kentucky. These records established the signature MMJ sound, mixing soaring harmonies with cascading, psychedelic guitars, and drenching the whole thing in head-ringing reverb. For their last studio album, 2005's widely acclaimed Z, they headed to Allaire Studios at the foot of the Catskill Mountains. Working with producer John Leckie, they crafted a more eclectic blend of sounds, bringing James's vocals further forward and adding reggae, soul, and pure pop into their gumbo.
This time, though, they opted for a different kind of setting, recording the bulk of Evil Urges in midtown Manhattan's Avatar Studios. "We wanted to deliberately try to make ourselves uncomfortable and shake it up," says James. "I feel like New York is just limitless possibility--you never knew what you'd see on the way to the studio, every morning was an adventure."
Evil Urges marks a new high point for a band that is proudly, impressively evolving. Z was a breakthrough for My Morning Jacket, really their first attempt to use the studio to do more than just capture their incomparable live sound (as documented on the mesmerizing live 2006 CD and DVD releases, both titled Okonokos). This album, though, extends that sense of experimentation and aspiration--and Jim James gives credit to his bandmates for the accomplishment.

Tundra! Welcome back!
Seriously doubt this will sell out, as realdeal mentioned, it is a GREAT lawn.
I think capacity for the Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem gig last fall was about 5,000
This is really cool. The fact that they'd schedule this show for their hometown fans is one more reason that they're such a great band. Should be quite a show!
QuoteI think capacity for the Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem gig last fall was about 5,000
Yeah, I was there last summer and it was packed but still plenty of room in the back. Nice set up with booze and such. We rode our bikes down to the park just to listen for free and after the third song, security and Lizi from Production Simple let like 30 or 40 of us in for free that were sitting in the grass outside. Awesome night.

and it sounds like they are pulling out all the stops..3 hrs, rolling up on the Bell of Louisville!
there is no telling what will go down at this show....if you can make it to Louisville i'd suggest doing so. this will be epic!!!
...should i come from California? My dream is to see MMJ in their hometown with a bunch of hometown fans. Shit...what do i do?

You probably should if you want to hear 'If All Else Fails' live.
Are these tickets gonna sell out super fast?!?!
I live in michigan and am 17. I have been progressively gaining more freedom. Last month my parents allowed me to go to chicago to see wilco. I told them this summer i will travel ANY distance necesarry to see mmj. I think this is the one. In their hometown.... and for 3 hours supposedly.... parfait.

you will hear some MMJ classics they probably won't play on the Fall US tour!
i doubt tickets will sell out until the last minute. louisville crowds are notorious for waiting until the week of a show to buy tix.
Oooh, I'm coming to this too! aMD, what's a good place to camp out - we can re-enact the Telluride experience!

Damn! Glad you're coming! Hopefully we can react our telluride experience, in that we'll be front row in front of jim. :) You're always welcome in my yard but I'm not within walking distance. I plan on bringing the things I need with me and camping out in line on saturday. We should definitely meet up. We'll have to do a preshow meetup. on friday maybe? hell, it's GA show we could carve out a bit of the audience if we wanted to.
wish I could be there with ya'll to represent

You guys were at telluride? I was front and center for Jacket - im sure you saw me freakin' out. I thought I saw some fans that might have been people from here, but i was so in the moment I couldn't speak to anyone. Yeah - and those dylan fans kinda sucked huh? They got all mad at me for comin up close for MMJ when NO ONE was up close. I was like "I drove 10 hours for 1 hour of music...as soon as they're done, i'll move"...and they were like "IM OLD! BLAH!!!!"
Remember Steam Engine? ahhhhhhh.......
you folks are nuts! i hope all of kentucky goes to see the Jacket so I can be front and center at Jewel & Brad Paisley over at Freedom Hall.
"dreams last for so long, even after you're gone...."
we can meet up and compare sets afterwords
...ok i'll come. Looking into flights right now!
the last show i saw was the one in the gardens and it was my first true jacket experience. i have been waiting for another show since then. after hearing they weren't playing their annual thanksgiving show my heart was broken but i knew they would repay us. so i am waiting and the day has come but of course this is the day i move in for fall semester in Dayton. :'( :'(

No, August 17th is the day you move in.
Seriously, all they do on the first day is give out the sylabus (sp? maybe I should have gone to class more) and tell you to read chapter one. You can do without
that right? Get up early on the 17th, throw down 5 or 6 aspirin, a little hair of the dog and hit the road. Come on man. Don't make me come down there.

Ha if only it was that easy. thinking about trying to move in early, might cost me an extra 50 bucks or so not to mention the 50 bucks in gas itll take me to get there and back. everything is worth it though, trying to pull something out of my ass :-/
Think I can get them to move it to Friday? ;)
QuoteThink I can get them to move it to Friday? ;)
Offer them $75 bucks, that way you can save $25. Those guys are really nice, you never know.
Just checked my email. Nice!!!! I'll make the drive from DC, havent been to Louisville in years, now i have a reason to go back.

Unfortunately, I don't think this one will be possible...and what's this Bell of Louisville? Intriguing...they should ring it, and then launch into Hells Bells, that would be pretty awesome. But the fact that they could come "rolling up on" it, leads me to believe it's not that kind of bell...
I've never been to Louisville, but I always thought it would be a place I could live in pretty happily. A slower paced, mid-sized city, a unique civic identity, friendly people, good whiskey...what more could you want?

QuoteQuoteI'm speechless...
Is that a good speechless Kory?
Oh, this is a great thing, two years in the waiting for them (as a whole) to come back home!
Quote(http://www.jimsphotosandframes.com/Images/BelleofLouisville.jpg)
;D Not quite what I'd pictured - this is much cooler. They should still try to incorporate it into a cover of Hells Bells.
Couldn't ask for a better venue in Louisville.
If only it could be 15 days earlier, it'd be the perfect birthday present :/
I'm assuming this will only be MMJ, since there's no information about an opening band, however, it's hard to believe they'd not invite Scott Carney and Co. to open.
We should be able to make it!!! :) :) :)

10 days later for me.
The email said "An Evening with" and if they're playing three hours I would say they probably won't have an opener. I love wax fang as much as anyone but I've seen a lot of the fang recently, bring on the jacket!!!

Seeing the oldsters (I'm old, but these people made me look like a college student) scrambling for the rail when MMJ finished was a sight to behold. "Back off, sonny! Or I'll give ye a pop-knot with my shillelagh!"
And Steam Engine was truly epic that day...as if there's a rule in the MMJ setlist book: When it rains, we play Steam Engine.

YES!!!
[smiley=beer.gif]
I actually have the week off from the 9th to the 17th...one day earlier & would fly out for this show. I swear there are greater forces working against me to make sure I don't get to see the Jacket live again :'(
For any out-of-towners thinking of coming to this I would highly recommend it. Downtown Louisville is very safe and there are hotels within walking distance of the Great Lawn and Waterfront Park.
Here are some things I would personally recommend to anyone visiting. (I am sure others can add more good things to this)

yay. i am really looking forward to this, especially if a riverboat entrance is involved.
Oh I'm working something here. It's totally getting ignored, but I'm working on it. I think I can do 2 Jacket shows in a year. If, and this is a totally hypothetical if, I may ask to crash on someones yard or driveway. Id have to go economy. Again, that is IF I can win the war that is about to rage in the Koehler household.
There will be a tasty bottle of some elixar and a pie from this place as ayment http://www.piekitchen.com/

I like that suggestion Meg. Too bad she got up and left the room and went to bed without saying g'night. It's a bit chilly here and it ain't from the cold front that rolled through.
Besides the Jacket, tasty delicious pies, & Hot Browns, anything else I can tempt her with? And glass looking rocks mined by a group of former Aparthied supporting jewlers is NOT on the table.
I'm thinking about selling my RCMH tickets and just hitting this one.

i don't want to buy online and spend $15 extra for the ticket when i can walk down the Field and buy 'em in hand!
I don't think they do charge you. that's a good idea curtis. i wonder when the box office closes. maybe i'll go down there friday.
and I too highly doubt this show will sell out until right before the show if at all.

I just said her down MJ, and said "Look here...." ;D
I mentioned it to her a couple of days ago, kind of planting the seed. Then last night I just went for it. She said she would like to go but she needed to see plans on how we are going to go (money, hotel, babysitter, etc..). She says my presentation of the whole thing is wrong. Meanwhile, I'm thinking to myself, "my presentation is wrong? this couldn't go any better if I was rehearsing it in my head".
Also, she is a CPA. Yesterday was April 15th and she was exhausted. I learned an invaluable lesson yesterday that will no doubt pay dividends for the rest of my life. :P

and I too highly doubt this show will sell out until right before the show if at all.
just found out in that if you purchase in the pre-sale you have a chance of winning 1 of 50 autographed posters...is this worth the $5 ticketmaster "convenience" charge?

right right. i mean THIS year. It's creeping up on me. Hope to see you there curtis.
For those curious I'm trying to nail down the campground. Once I have it nailed down and the date set I will post a thread about it and we can bounce ideas off each other of how to make this year better than last. I already have a list of about 8 bands that I'm going to ask or already have. I hope to get a small stage riser and have bands all day saturday and an open stage / open mic on Sunday. Like I said, more coming soon I'll try to get on the horn with those folks this weekend but I'm going out of town so it may be next week.

The guy who swore to everyone that I looked exactly like his son, the son he shared prostitutes with? That was pretty much the highlight of my Jacketfest weekend. That and the rain leaking through our tent. That and the huge spiders. That and my forgetting my Elmo flashlight.

QuoteFor any out-of-towners thinking of coming to this I would highly recommend it. Downtown Louisville is very safe and there are hotels within walking distance of the Great Lawn and Waterfront Park.
Here are some things I would personally recommend to anyone visiting. (I am sure others can add more good things to this)
Places close by to Stay:

I miss Skyline. There used to be one a few blocks from my school. I discovered it one day when I was on a quest to find something other than cheap burgers and mexican food. On my third visit there, it had become a Famous Taco. I was crushed.

I'm almost a cincy boy but let's call it the more affordable choice. most out of towners don't seem to "get it" from my experience. i love it, but most people i know don't. if you want real quality go for ramsi's. they're right across from each other, btw.

Me and the wife will be there!
Forgive me if my memory isn't very good in retelling this tale, but I think it went something like this...
One night, all of us Jacketeers were at the campfire - not sure what we were doing, but this guy came from out of the woods and invited himself to our circle. I dunno about everyone else, but I was on guard the second he showed up, because I didn't know who the fuck he is or what his business was... My first thought was that he must be the owner of the property, because that's how we carried himself - like he owned the place. There may or may not have been questionable substances on hand, so that may or may not have been an added factor of paranoia, as well.
Someone, I won't say who, broke the silence in the most hysterical way possible. I crack up about that to this very day.
Anyway, things were disarmed from there, and so I retired before long thinking that nothing else would come of it.
The next day, though, he shows back up. I don't know that that particularly bothered anyone, but I couldn't help but notice he kept looking at me really weird. Throughout the day, he apparently told some of the folks at the Jacket Fest that I had an uncanny resemblance to his son... He was so fixed on this that he disappeared for a while and came back with his "gardener" or meth lab partner - he walks up to me and points at me and says to his buddy, "Who does he look like?"
"...uh... your boy?"
Long story short... in order to appease him, I agreed to take a photo with him. What the hell, right? What's the worse that could happen? If the dude wants to jerk off to my photo, I guess that's his business.
(I wish I had that photo now, that'd make this story so much better!)
He showed a few people the photo of his son. The photo was on his camera, so he was able to flip back and forth from his son's image to the photo he had just had taken with me. I could tell by the way people kept looking up from the camera and looking at me that his son had no resemblance whatsoever.
I was the last one to get a look at the photo of his son. The kid didn't look anything like me, of course... but the story becomes legend here: he showed me the photo of his son, then proceeded to flip past a series of photos of pornographic nature.
Does anyone remember how I reacted? I don't.
;D goddamm I wish I would have been there for that. I'm in tears right now imagining.
So the dude was hitting on you? The guy that he thinks looks like his son. Sick! ;D
Don't forget the part where he lied and said his nephew or some such owned the place. I normally welcome strangers to join in but he had such an air about him that I just quit talkin' to him and he seemed to leave me alone.
;D I'm sad I missed that.

Anyone know of a good place to stay in Louisville for that weekend?
do some searches on hotels near the airport, they have the best deals (if cost is the issue)
if you're lookin' to celebrate heartily, there's some mighty fine four star hotels downtown (the brown, the seelbach) that are both fabulous.... ;)

I was looking at a hotel near the Park. If I were to stay at the Marriot or Residence Inn right there, would that be a good "central" location? Thanks.
i forgot that the new marriott is right there...yes, absolutely. that would be a few things...
1. close to the park for the show
2. downtown and close to the interstates
3. centrally located as to enjoy other things about louisville (if you're so inclined..like the Highlands)
Hey, I appreciate it. Looks like I'll be laying my head there for a coupla nights.
Bought my ticket minutes after they went on sale. Making it a family trip with the wife and daughter. They will not be attending the show. I'm meeting a group of people from the Lollapalooza message board for the show.
It's going to be tough for me to wait until August.

Well, it's a fact that I wasted 9 bucks buying tickets from ticketbastard as I though the odds of getting this were pretty good. I'm guessing some non-FPK members got in on the presale... should have been a local thing or checked for memberships.
Hey Kory..how do you know we are not members or that i didn't ever live in Louisville and paid my dues to be a member of the radio station???
cause sometimes i'm an asshole. I know. I just see some folks from far away saying they hope they ship as they don't want to have to drive/fly to the ville to pick it up.
QuoteYou know, I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but the night of this show is a full moon...
Uh oh. :o
I'll need to rest up for this one.

What do people know about the Louisville Leopard Percussionists? They've been added to the bill...
The Louisville Leopard Percussionists are a performing ensemble of approximately 45 student musicians, ages 7-12, living in and around Louisville, Kentucky. Each student learns and acquires proficiency on several instruments, such as marimbas, xylophone, vibraphone, drum set, timbales, congas, bongos and piano.
Award-winning elementary school teacher Diane Downs started her first percussion ensemble, The Fabulous Leopard Percussionists, as a volunteer activity after she found some old instruments in a storage closet in the school where she taught in Louisville.
No one anticipated the levels of excitement and satisfaction that would be generated for the children, nor the extraordinary emotional impact that the group would have on audiences through local, regional, national and international music performances.
After ten years as artistic director of the Fabulous Leopard Percussionists, Diane Downs began to explore how she might make the Leopard Percussionist experience available to children throughout the Metro Louisville community.
In the fall of 2003, The Louisville Leopard Percussionists launched as a freestanding community 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, committed to providing the exciting and enriching Leopard Percussionist experience to all children in the Louisville community. Participation in the ensemble has always been and will always be offered regardless of cultural or socioeconomic background.
Our mission is to provide a comprehensive musical experience for children that enriches lives and builds community.
Our vision is for participants of diverse backgrounds develop music appreciation, performance skills, proficiency on a variety of percussion instruments, and learn to improvise, compose, and teach music, and to care for their instruments. These skills build creativity and self-confidence and teach life-long values of personal discipline, cooperation, leadership, responsibility, and community.

When my kids were in elemantary school, the Leopard Percussionists I believe were out of Martin Luther King Elementary. They are for real and fun to see and hear. I bet MMJ does something with them, maybe joining them for their opening song.
I also have a feeling the boys are not done with the surprises for this show. I know Jim half jokingly mentioned coming in on the Belle of Louisville. Will there be costumes? A theme? We will see.

Has anyone been to a show here? I'm assuming it's GA but when it says lawn I picture taking chairs and a cooler. Am I way off. Can you carry your own cooler in??
QuoteHas anyone been to a show here? I'm assuming it's GA but when it says lawn I picture taking chairs and a cooler. Am I way off. Can you carry your own cooler in??
I'm going to say no on the coolers. They're going to want you to buy their beer and soft drinks and water.
I'd say you can bring chairs if you want, or blankets, but I expect it to be crowded with fist pumpers who want to get their asses rocked-the fuck-off!!!! With that being said, it may be beneficial to sit further back if you bring chairs...better for the railers, which, in turn would be better for you.
I don't know the truth to either of these questions, I'm just speculating. I've seen shows down there before, but not of this calibur so it's hard to judge. The Great Lawn is packed during Thunder Over Louisville and they allow a little more, but I don't know if the same rules apply for the bad-ass waterfront concert that showcases the righteous talent of My Morning Jacket.
Bringing lawn chairs to an MMJ concert? Blasphemy!

I was asking for Tracy. Ya know his old age and all. ;)
I'm trying to get an idea of the venue. Thanks for the input Lovedog. That's kinda what I was thinking with coolers.
I got tickets for the L-ville show yesterday.I grew up in L-ville but have migrated to South Central Ky. where the minds are closed and the church doors are open.I first heard MMJ when they opened for Bob Dylan in Louisville at Jillian's a few years back.I've since seen them at Bogart's and the 2005 Thanksgiving show at The Palace.MMJ is timeless, ageless, and probably the most talented group of guys to ever grace a stage. You see I don't fit the general demographic of your typical rock concert goer.I'm a 42 year old mother of two living in the sticks.Oh well it just goes to show anyone can be bitten by that beautiful bug we call My Morning Jacket. Here's to August 16th and the greatest performers on Earth!!!
well, at least you have the interweb down there and found this great place!

Go with the Res Inn. I used to work for Marriott and they were always more comfortable I thought. The rooms have a real kitchen and you can pack shitloads of people in them (and beer in the normal size fridge).

Myself, GivenToFly, and another friend will be flying in from Philly. Its going to be a whirlwind. We leave Philadelphia at 10 Saturday and arrive at noon. Grab some food and a few drinks, head to the show, back out to the bars until they kick us out, then back to the airport, because our return flight leaves at 6AM Sunday. We'll be back in Philly 22 hours after we left, not even a full day lol.

We really should get a huge group picture. We need to set a forum record for photo with the most Jacketeers.

I am going to post a pic tonight that will set the benchmark.
I was just in Louisville this past weekend. I was put up at the Galt house. Its about 4 blocks down on Main St. The room that we got had a living room (with pull out queen couch) and also 2 queen sized beds in the same suite.
My room was compt so we asked how much the rate would normally be. The desk lady said around $180. Thats not to bad if you have a few people going in.
The hotel is very swank and has several bars in the place. One is bourbon bar called "jockey silks" very cool place.
I'm not sure if anyone needs tickets to the Louisville show, but I have a pair and unable to go. Will sell for face with free shipping. Message me if interested...

You should work for yahoo directions.Your directions are much simpler.Yahoo had me turning several times and I could tell from the map there was a simpler way to walk.Hell,I'd walk ten blocks in the pouring rain for this gig but hopefully it doesn't come to that.
We'll be there...1st show of our Jacket tour...'bout damn time. RCMH seems like such a long time ago.

i'm sure i am speaking for quite a few people on here when i say that i have walked ten blocks (more like 2 miles) in the pouring rain back to my campsite after the bonnaroo show...and seeing the best live show ever was definitely worth every miserable step i took at 4:30 in the morning.

Would any of you locals, or anyone that has been there for that matter, recommend the Louisville Slugger Museum?
I took my son to the museum and factory last month. He's ten and a big fan of baseball so he loved it.He got to touch some of the bats they'd already made for Albert Pujols,A-Rod,and a few others. You can also have a Louisville Slugger personalized with your name while you tour the museum although they're a little pricey. The cost of admission was very reasonable and I'd say it's worth a visit while you're already in The Ville.
Anyone know a reasonably priced place to stay near the show? Cheap hotel/motel or better yet, a hostel?
Just booked a plane ticket today after I found the show wasn't sold out, and I realized I had the weekend off! Been wanting to go to Louisville for a while now, and here's the chance! I'M PUMPED! ;D

It looks like the Lebowski Show. If it is, my son and I are front center on the rail. Our first show. We did not even know all of the member's names, nor were we that familiar with their catalog. All I remember saying on the way back to the car parked near Joe's crab was "that was the real shit."

i mean, smooooth tunes, carnies, funnel cake, and mmj the next day?
sweet deal.
This week is going to be soooooo long lol. After seeing Wilco from the front row last night and looking forward to the Louisville pilgrimage Saturday, Im sitting in my office feeling completely spaced out and worthless. I really cant get my mind of it, its dominating my thoughts. Just cant wait.
Sounds like 9 of the 25 passengers on our plane are going to the show, should be a great trip. Who's up for a "Hopefully" sing-a-long at 35,000 feet? ;D

I'm thinking an acapella rendition of Touch Me Part 2 (think Bonnaroo)... boop beep beep.
And yes this week is going to drag. Doctors appointment wednesday, dentist appoointment Thursday, and facial reconstructive surgery sometime Sunday due to the melting that is sure to occur.

Just ran across this - PRE and AFTER PARTY INVITE:
http://backseatsandbar.wordpress.com/2008/08/11/mmj-pre-party-and-after-party-dce-w-hambone-azns-n-bnzs-dj-narwhal/
Okay. So we know you will be at the My Morning Jacket show on Saturday night, but have you decided what to do before and after their epic 3 hour set? You will want to find somewhere close to Waterfront Park, where you can have a cold beer and grill out before, and then wind down after the show. Look no further than Derby City Espresso, located at 331 East Market. Starting around 2pm, Matt at DCE will have the grill going and he will be dishing out some great bbq eats to go with a quenching beer list. Around 5pm, local bluesman Hambone will play some tunes to get you ready for the show. Doors open at the MMJ show at 6:30pm so most people will want to start heading over around then. DCE will stay open a little later than that, but will shut its doors prior to MMJ hitting the stage. It will reopen after the MMJ set and Azns n Bnzs and DJ Narwhal will provide some musical entertainment as you recover from what may be the best live show of the year. Admission to the afterparty is $5 bucks, but if you have a MMJ ticket stub, then it is FREE. I cannot wait for Saturday!

Anyone know how many people are expected at this show?
Okay, I don't get it. I have searched the internet 2 times over and I haven't found a good picture of the Great Lawn. I want to see what the place looks like during concerts. I looked on here as well, and I didn't find anything.
Isn't anyone else having this problem, or am I the only person who has no idea what it's going to be like?
If there are any pics, I would love to see it so I can get even more excited. I need something for me to keep me entertained until the show. I can't wait, seriously, I want to go sit on the lawn right now and just wait there.

Go underneath the overpass, closer to the river and that is where the show will be.
My buddy is going to ride over there today and see if they are setting up the stage yet or anything. If they are I will have pics to post tomorrow.
I would love a general idea of what to expect, so then I can dream about it for the next few night.

Theres a few folks here that can look out their window and see if they're setting up... folks I haven't seen around in a while...
I'd have to walk the bridge but maybe I'll make that part of my bike ride home today.
My office faces the waterfront & I can confirm that nothing is being set up just yet.
Waterfront Concerts are great & I've yet to find a stage configuration I've not yet liked. My suspicion is that the stage will be set up so that the water is the backdrop as it was recently for George Clinton, rather than the configuration used for the LCD Soundsystem/Arcade Fire show.
We're going down early to avoid the crowds and just cooking out at Derby City Espresso which is just a couple blocks from the Waterfront. We've got Hambone playing some really great bluesy stuff beforehand and DJs afterwards so you can avoid the crowds on both ends. For any out of towners, you ought to come if for no other reason than to check out the "Derby City Stout"....a stout prepared by the BBC exclusively for DCE which incorporates coffee beans....very very good

Thank for pics Kory. You're really coming through for us outtatowners!
Thanks for the cell phone snaps, that is helping me get a vision in my head for what is about to happen to all of us.
I guess it doesn't matter what the place looks like, I usually can't even open my eyes when MMJ are playing. I'm not kidding, it takes all my courage to even stand up and look at the stage; the power that exists at a MMJ event is so amazing that I sometimes just sit down for minutes at a time and try to gather my physical self enough to stand on my feet.
Or sometimes I just stand there and wobble around with weak knees and hope nobody notices how crazy I am.
god damn those shaky knees!!!! :D
no problem guys/gals, it will be on the water side and it is pretty big... I think i've heard 20,000 people could easily gather there.
Like Backseat Sandbar said, i would guess the stage would back the water but I've been to a few shows down there and the stage could be facing west (right on the photos)
It's the bigger of the two grassy areas. the area to the left is called 'harbor lawn' not 'the great lawn'
out waterfront wednesday concerts by wfpk happen on the harbor lawn.

I exchanged a few emails with one of the park directors and she said that it holds up to 20,000 but they were only selling 8,000 tickets for the show. Should be plenty of room.

I was getting ready to ask that too, but someone beat me to it. Anyway...I'm glad it's confirmed. My question: Will they jam out on the Belle or will they get off and face hump us from a stage?
when did Jim say something about the Star?
Quotewhen did Jim say something about the Star?
There was an article in the C-J a few months ago that announced the show, and there was a quote from Jim saying something about a grand entrance on the Belle or the Star- but he preffered the Belle because the Star sucks...or something to that effect. I've got it at home but I'm not sure the date exactly.
Yeah the CJ is where I read it. He said that he hoped the band could pull up on the Belle. But he said if they can't work that out they just might have to settle with showing up on the Star. Then one of the other member's of the band was quoted as saying, 'Jim comes up with all these crazy ideas in his head so that will probably happen." Can't wait to see if it does. Sorry to spoil your suprise GivenToFly. No hard feelings, it was widespread.
Here is the actual article from the CJ.
My Morning Jacket, Louisville's most internationally adored band in recent memory, will today announce its first local performance in nearly two years.
"An Evening With My Morning Jacket," a co-production of Production Simple and the Louisville Bats, will be Aug. 16 on the Great Lawn at Waterfront Park.
Tickets go on sale 10 a.m. Friday at the Louisville Slugger Field box office, TicketMaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com and by phone, (502) 361-3100. They'll be $33.50, which includes a $1 donation to a charity to be determined.
MMJ singer Jim James said that the band wants to do something special. Its last show, on Thanksgiving Eve 2006, featured a brigade of 21 Santa Clauses and the Squallis Puppeteers.
"I want to do something with the Belle of Louisville," James said from New York City, where he's living part-time. "I'm trying to figure out some grandiose stunt where we roll up on the Belle.
"It's kind of weird to say anything, though, because it's too soon. I don't want to promise the Belle of Louisville and only deliver the Star of Louisville."
"We all know that whatever Jim dreams up, Jim can make happen," said Production Simple's Billy Hardison. "We probably won't know for sure until a week before the show."
The concert will be a three-hour romp through the band's entire catalog, with special attention paid to its upcoming album, "Evil Urges." The record, one of the band's finest, comes out June 10, and the "Evil Urges Tour" will stop at all of the major summer festivals, including Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tenn., and Coachella in Indio, Calif.
"We haven't played Louisville in so long that we wanted to do a long show, really give people a lot of bang for their bucks," James said.
The all-ages show will be presented by WFPK (91.9-FM).
For more information, go to www.productionsimple.com.
3 hour romp? I can handle that.
thanks guys, I think my moms clipped that for me but I failed to read it... I do recall the Belle though, just didn't remember the star.
I think they should ride up on a john boat.
Or on skiis in a pyramid, like Hawaii 5-0! :-?
Hey Kory, Given, and others familiar with the venue,
We've had some crazy changes to our plans again. It looks like we might be bringing the little ones along (almost 3 and 7 year olds). My wife has become increasingly infatuated with MMJ over the last 3-4 months and was really looking forward to the show. However with the disruption of our long ago plans to do this show 'adults only' style, she has offered to miss the show and hang out with the boys. I know it's an all ages show, but it's a little too much to ask of the boys to hang in there until 11 or midnight. So, my question is:
Are there places throughout the park that she might be able to hang out with the boys and still hear a little audio of JJ belting out some fine tunes (I think if she heard Magheeta, she might faint)? I've checked out Waterfront Park's site and there are some cool things to do like the big playground and water play areas and just hanging out on some green patches and playing ball and being silly. But does anyone know if she might be able to catch a few tunes while being the awesome woman that she is and playing with the little ones? Sorry for the very long post, but I'm just trying to make it all work out. Thanks, guys and gals.
@Wharf rat.....You could try to make a reservation at Joe's Crab Shack to sit outside. Not only will she be able to hear, but she'll have a decent view. I HIGHLY suggest that she do this, if possible. If not, there is a playground in the park that she could no doubt play with the kids at that is also incredibly close and could very easily hear the show. However, even if reservations can't be made, it would be worth going early and just posting up for the night at Joes...you can always do the playground afterwards...
also, I've noticed a lot of activity at the waterfront today, namely golf carts riding around the area where the stage is likely to be set...looks like they're starting to get ready, but nothing constructed just yet.

Oh, we posted a little mini-interview with Patrick Hallahan today as part of a series of interviews we've done for Louisville bands. Check it out at Backseat Sandbar (http://backseatsandbar.wordpress.com/2008/08/13/my-morning-jacket-takes-5-for-kentucky/)
Good suggestion on Joes!
The playground is somewhat on the eastern side of the park system down there. There are some hills that may block some sound but I'm sure you could hear. I'd maybe think about Joes though just for safety's sake. Louisville is a very safe city but I'd feel weird being anywhere somewhat alone after dark.

Thanks Cory!
If the "gates" open at 6:30 I am guessing that they are going to have a certain area completely fenced off for the 8,000 lucky SOB's who have tickets. Even though it is fenced off you will be able to hang out anywhere on the waterfront be it the harbor or the playground and still hear everything just fine.
How awesome is it that this thread has over 8 THOUSAND views?!
Excited we are.
I'm soooooooo jealous of you peeps!!!! I can't wait to hear all the stories and see the pics! Be cool all. 8-)

Thanks for all the input, everyone. I was curious as to how much area might be fenced off for showgoers only, but it sounds like my lady will be able to catch some sound. We'll make it work somehow.

You might reconsider the Joe's thing. Not totally...not because it's a bad idea-in fact it's a great idea! It's just that three hours (realistically four hours) at a restaurant/bar with kids-even with an outdoor spot, may be a little much. Plus the little ones may get tuckered out.
My suggestion----Do the Joe's thing. After a little while there, walk over to the Great Lawn, but behind the expressway (see pictures from a couple of pages ago) lay down a blanket, out of everyones way and chill there. There is so much room there that she won't have to worry about any trouble and she'll be able to hear fabulously. Make sure to bring sweaters and/or a cover blanket for the kiddos though, because it may get chilly at night by the river. The little ones may even want to fall asleep out there, while your lady stares up at the sky, imagining Jim's lyrics coming true.
Just a suggestion.
Is the show sold out? I would guess with only 8000 tickets being sold that it would definitely sell out.
I'll be in line in less than 72 hours.

Not yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does.
I know it's all fun and games right now, but I need to ask a serious question:
(spies...close your eyes)
What kind of atmosphere will there be for the show? And what I mean is, will this be anything like a Bonnaroo show, since it's outside? How nutty can we get? No matter what, I'm going to be highly medicated with good happy stuff, but I was just kind of wondering about the type of crowd b/c my girlfriend is sorta paranoid that people will think she's some crazy drug fiend. I have confidence, b/c MMJ fans are nice folks.

No matter what, I'm going to be highly medicated with good happy stuff, but I was just kind of wondering about the type of crowd b/c my girlfriend is sorta paranoid that people will think she's some crazy drug fiend. I have confidence, b/c MMJ fans are nice folks.
you neednt worry about anything, the ville is a very laid back, liberal town and you will be able to get away with just about anything. i would say a good percentage of people there will be engaging in illicit activities and the lawn is big enough that if you need to get away from the crowd you will be able to and still hear the music as clear as a bell. i will be down there with probably around 40 people and all of us will be off our faces so if you need some friendlies, just look for a huge group of people who look very out of their minds.
as far as the peeps with kids, the playground is really nice and is only about 150-200 yds from the stage so you will be able to still hear the music from there. also as said above, the lawn is huge so you can always hang out in the back on a blanket.
someone said before there will only be 8000 tix sold, i am highly suspicious (see what i did there) about this claim. the great lawn can easily hold 30-40,000 or more people and im assuming they will continue to sell tix until showtime. there were probably 25-30,000 folks at the 4th of july free parliament show and it was not crowded at all.

Thank you for clearing that up, officially. I have been battling that small little question for years and years and years-never occured to me to do a wikipedia search. Anyway, when I have to use that little phrase, from now on, I can say it with confidence and not have to mumble out the remaining syllable anymore. :)
Happy I could make at least one worthwhile contribution to the boards.

I have kind of a random question. Are the mosquitoes bad up there? In Florida, if you're near water at sunset you're going to get eaten up. Will I need to pack some "Off"?
are coolers allowed in and if so, what can the coolers contain as far as beverages go?

you may want to think about it, i wouldnt say they are as bad as florida but it is going to rain tomorrow and that usually brings them out... as far as saturday though the weather will be perfect.
Quoteare coolers allowed in and if so, what can the coolers contain as far as beverages go?
no coolers allowed... heres a list.

Thanks for all the valuable info rmpostsy.
The list states "no bottles," does this mean we can't bring water? Usually you can bring in a bottle of water but they take off the cap. I am not a fan of buying water.

I say bring your own. If it's a problem, worst case scenario is they trash it. And if so...it's just a bottle of water, after all. :-/
I figured there would be several good people there, I just had a strange image in my head of the show being different b/c it is in their home town. I guess it doesn't matter, once MMJ starts playing, all bets are off anyway.
God, even when I saw MMJ play a "Rock for Riley" children's hospital benefit, all us fans were freaking the fuck out, and that was a benefit for children. So I guess I know what to expect: face melting, face humping with guitars, eargasms, seizures of pure joy, and loads of freaking out in a good way.
My GF and I are coming into town friday evening. Does anyone local have any recommendations for stuff to do? We'll be looking for some dinner and a place to hangout friday night. Are there any good places to catch a band or just sit back and sip some beers?
Any sights we oughta check out saturday day?
Thanks in advance!

Yeah, they're bad in Alabama, lately, too... I'm thinking given the volume of people in such a small space, the mosquitoes won't bother anyone.

Here's a thought....check the board ;) ;) ;) ;)
I highly recommend going to Wick's Pizza on Bardstown Road. A local band called Big Rock Show is playing on Friday. These guys play classic covers..but REALLY well. Anything from Zeppelin, Van Halen to SRV. The pizza here is good too. Also, all up and down Bardtown road there are some fun restaurants and bars. Molly Malones is good for dinner and then turns into a sort of club atmosphere after 11:00.
If you want a fun yet casual place for dinner, try Lynn's Paradise Cafe. Also GREAT for breakfast but be prepared to wait if you go Saturday morning. You will have to google map it. It's near the Bardstown road area as well.
On Saturday, take a drive through Cave Hill Cemetary - again on Bardstown at Grinstead. Sounds weird, but do it. Go to their site to see where to find the grave of Colonel Sanders and others.
Maybe go the the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs or to the Louisvlile Slugger Museum.
If you want a little "local flavor" stop in at the Back Door, also on Bardstown, but it's in the back/rear of an old strip mall. It can be a little scary, but my wife and I go in there and always make a friend or two.

Great little bar in the Highlands you could go to called the Hideaway Saloon.
I'm looking out my window & I can see the stage being erected. Below is a TERRIBLE cell phone photo from VERY far away, but it is the stage on the waterfront....and it's time to start getting very excited.
Also for places to go, I'd have to say the Nachbar is the best bar in town...your most likely to find kindered spirits there and its very easy to meet people there...
For what it's worth I went to the willie nelson and DMB concert a couple weeks ago at slugger field. We tailgated all afternoon on the waterfront with no problem. Had beers in coozies, food, and cornhole. We were posted up kinda near to some cops on horse patrol and they never said anything to us or anyone else who was around for what I could tell. I'd say keep the drinks in cups and don't make a huge scene and you should be fine.
So who is going to Brownings before the show?
Wooooo I can't WAIT!!!
Very new to the boards but a fellow-fan since TTF.
So does anyone know of any good parking spots for the show? I'm visiting from out of state and have no clue as to where good parking might be accessible.
Thanks so much for your help ya'll!!!!!!
PS This show might culminate my spirits to heaven on earth unto eternity.....I'm excited if you can't tell.

I'm from out of town as well but there's a link to a pdf map of the waterfront on page 25 of this thread. It does show some parking but maybe one of the locals can tell you of a nearby parking garage. We're staying in a hotel about a block away so we'll be arriving on foot.
Here's that link I mentioned.Hopefully it will help with the parking situation.

me too but i wanna hope
QuoteI've been hearing that the boys might play their entire discography... does anyone know if there's any truth to this?
That'd take well over 6 hours.
QuoteSo who is going to Brownings before the show?
My friend and I are planning on going sometime before the show.
as far as parking there are at least two lots down there and two garages that are all well within walking distance. they will probalby fill up if you get there any later than 6 or so. there is a lot at the baseball field if (if youre facing the front on the right) and there is one on the left of the baseball park behind the swooping pointy building (you will know it when you see it). there is also the witherspoon garage which is more or less directly across from the main entrance to the waterfront at 1st and witherspoon (the street in front of the park). there are a couple of other garages in the area as well if you drive around then you shouldnt have any trouble... or try some of the hotels.
as far as their whole discography, it aint happening. i am friends with the propmoter and he told me yesterday ****spoilers****
they will start promptly at 8 and HAVE to be off stage by 11 due to the park closing and the noise ordinance. so we will get 3 solid hours of jacket with which to lose our minds!

a little tip for you out of towners, it will be about 5-8 degrees cooler than what the weather says due to the show being on the river.
yea, a sweatshirt for the ladies may be a good idea.
A good bit of whiskey should do the trick, as well.
Good tip, thanks.
It's finally here! I am heading to Louisville in about 2 hours to check into my hotel. I'm going to hit up a few bars tonight and just hang out with my girlfriend.
Our 1 yr "anniversary" is August 16th, yes, the same night as the best show in the history of the world, so were are going to kind of celebrate tonight, and then really fucking celebrate tomorrow. I can't wait, I'm so excited, I'm almost nervous just thinking about how much fun it's going to be for everybody.
By the way, if this is your first Jacket show, or at least your first outdoor Jacket show, then don't tell us you weren't warned, b/c I'm doing it right now: Your life will never be the same! Your grandkids will be telling your great grandkids about the epicness you experienced.
Time to feed my cats and get on the road, on the way to JIM.
Be careful. Hope to see you at the show.
PACKING!

"Evil Urges" album at our own Waterfront Park on August 16.
As part of the experience, www.louisville.com
(along with the band) are hosting a Local Village replete with some of
the most familiar names around our city that help to make it such a
unique place to live. Local brews, local grub, local retailers and
local organizations that help keep us "weird" will populate a large
area on the Western edge of the Great Lawn.
The Morning After
Start: 08/16/2008 - 11:00 pm
End: 08/17/2008 - 2:00 am
Location: Rooftop of Glassworks Building
Address: 815 West Market
City: Louisville
State: Kentucky
Phone: 502.498.4333
Website: http://www.louisville.com/node/2945
Price: $5 ($2 with MMJ ticket stub)
Description:
My Morning Jacket will take care of the party when they play their
3-hour set for thousands of fans on August 16, but when the show is
over and the crowd disperses, Louisville.com invites the crowd to our
afterparty on the rooftop of the Glassworks building on West Market at
9th street.
Madison, Indiana's SameSoul (www.myspace.com/samesoul) will take care of the music with their original blend of roots, fusion, and jam rock.
whatever you guys do, make sure to stop by the cumberland brew tent... some of the best microbrew youve ever had.
There are too many things to do lol. I have no idea what I want to do now. Wicks, Bearnes, the rooftop party...it would help if I had been to any of these places.

Last minute decision to come down from Cincinnati... alone. Message me if you want to be friends for the night! 22/m/oh :'( :'( :'(
After tonight's show, I was seriously considering going to this one as well but unfortunately it's just not financially feasible right now. I guess I'll just have to wait until they get to Detroit in October.
@richardlove - it's a MMJ show...we're all friends!
Tonight's show is going to be incredible. $34: Are you kidding me? Come to Derby City Espresso beforehand & ask the owner for Cory. I'll be yr friend for the night. It's going to be NUTS!

That's practically the perfect way to do it!!!!!! All that's missing is, well, I don't really know what... It's settled. You HAVE to go. Do it for those of us who drive '95 Toyota 4-Runners with a bad AC and no radio antenna, and who live way across the country on the west coast and couldn't make it in time if Endora was involved!! I expect a full report, sir. ;)
no a/c here as well...SUPER DEDICATION....where's the noob meet up for louisville???????

Hi everyone, 1st post. Me and the wife are driving from TN. and don't have tix. Can tix be purchased at the show? Were leaving around 10am and I didn't want to stop @ ticketmaster. This thread has me all worked up! I feel like leaving right now!
PS is this a SmOkE freindly event?
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. PS a blanket to set on is ok, right?

The last I heard there were tickets still available. We're heading out from South central Ky in about an hour for a day in Louisville before the show.
I would think outdoors in L-ville SmOkE wouldn't be a problem but I've seen swat teams at these things harrassing everybody before, but not in the Ville. You can bring a blanket in with you.
Everyone have a safe trip. All I like is packing our extra faces,I'm thinking we'll need a couple dozen each before this is over!!!! :D
Thanks! I have been packing, rolling and checking the com. for updates all morning. Have a save trip!!
If anyone has info on tickets please chirp in I'm on the road soon!
Is it OK to tailgate in Lville? The parking lot next to the ballpark looks nice and big. OK to park there? See everyone this afternoon! Thanks!
The day is finally here! The weather is great today BTW.
Sorry if this was already posted, but here is a link to article about the show/band that was on the FRONT page of Louisville's Courier Journal yesterday. It says the crowd is expected to reach 10k! Awesome

QuoteIf anyone is looking for something to do after the show, you should check out Arnett Hollow at Bearno's By The Bridge on 2nd and Main. It's just a few blocks from Waterfront Park...They tear it up...
I'm so pumped for the Jacket!!
I was going to post this too. They're some friends of mine and are a real good band of all local people. Bearno's is walking distance from the Waterfront too which is quite convenient. Bearno's should still be serving food after the show too so if you're hungry and/or want to see some good music then come on out. I think the cover is 3 bucks or something, and I'm sure a bunch of people there will be coming from the Jacket show. Should be a fun way to end the night!

the ville is very SMOKE friendly, just not in bars. otherwise you can pretty much smoke ANYTHING ANYWHERE.
tix are still on sale, go to the box office at the baseball stadium.

Seeing The Jacket at home in front of 8-10,000 people...priceless.
And don't forget to come to Bearno's in the Highlands after the show. NO COVER charge! $1.50 DOMESTIC DRAFTS! $3.00 all BBC! $4.00 Bombs! Oh, yeah...FREE order of BREADSTICKS with proof by ticket stub!
I'm on the General Jackson right now...headed up the riva to the show...glowsticks in hand, ready to dance my feet off on the soft riverbed grass.
See you there! ;D
Me, Meg, Alan, and four of our friends will be at Bearno's...
anybody headed from Nashville hit the traffic on 65 just south of Ville what the hell happened there????? put me two hours behind schedule but still here!! :D :D!
An 18 wheeler jack-knifed and only the shoulder was left open. Big mess... We were stuck there for a little over 2 hours.
Damn I wish i was going!!!!!!!
Have a fan-FUCKING-tastic time, everyone!! :D :D :D
we were there for a little under two hours it was very very nasty.... Thank You (too) for a good atlas!!!
You all have a great time tonight! After deciding I couldn't make to Louisville tonight, my Mom and I decided to go see Rodrigo y Gabriela at the Ryman, so that should be a good time (though I doubt it will be as good as what you're all in for!).
HAVE FUN CHILDREN!!!! maybe you'll get an "it's about twlight" or something really special again! LOVE!
Have fun! I wanna hear some awesome stories when you all get back. :)
I just went out in my backyard and tried to hear the show.... couldn't hear shit >:(
Shouldn't someone be live blogging me right now?
Solid show. Played oye coma Va with the percussion kids before the show. Highlights for me were highly suspicious and touch me. Also the puppets on stage for the encore.
GREAT SHOW!! worth the drive from Chicago and the flight from NYC. better than expected, I just hate being so short! I barley saw Jim's crazy dance moves.
I got some really great shots from this show...should have the full review up at Backseat Sandbar later today

yeah, I did, that's what I really love about it; I like how you review the shows, there's a sort of passion in the words, not full of cliches and what not (I'll pass the word).
before the waterfront show i ordered some stickers that i'd planned to pass out at the concert.
they say: RAMPANT BADASSERY on them. they've finally arrived and they are pretty rad! if you want one, just send me a self-addressed stamped envelope. the sticker will fit in a letter sized envelope (the ones that are about 9 x 3 in.--i don't have a ruler on me. )
to get my address, PM me.
i've got 100 of these stickers and will pass them out after the upcoming shows (portland, seattle, los angeles) until they are gone. for the love of pete, please don't put the stickers on anything at the venues.
**THE STICKERS HAVE NO MMJ LOGOS OR TEXT ON THEM, AND ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE BAND AT ALL--this is strictly the descriptive line i'm giving this tour. every tour, really, but let's not quibble.** [smiley=beer.gif]
