I noticed twice this week that Jim played a bass on Two Halves. It looked like a Rickenbaker, kinda like Lemmy's ;). I don't recall seeing this discussed. But it was a pretty interesting thing to see, two basses being played on one song.
He does, and it is a Rickenbacker.
He plays it with a capo pretty high up there... maybe around the 12th fret or so. Makes for a nice sound.
At the CD Release show at Ear Xtacy somebody yelled "dueling basses!!!" when Jim strapped on the bass capoed on the tenth fret. Jim looked up with a smile as if to say "oh yeah, baby!!"
His looks just like this one!

Take a look at Lemmys Bass, its very close. In fact, the more I think about it, i kinda like to hear Lemmy jam with MMJ

this board is full of good ideas... :)
He was definitely playing a Fireglo Rickenbacker 4003
...or just like Lou Barlow's, but some asshole stole it when they stole all of Dinosaur Jr's equipment like two years ago, they should have their hands cut off...
