Title: What ruined my time at NYE (a bummer)
Post by: zoso7374 on Jan 07, 2009, 04:32 PM
So here is my sob story . . . I wrote a long email to a few email addresses for MMJ . . . god I hope someone helps me.  And please please don't bombard them claiming the same thing happened to you.

I was sitting in section 107, had a blast of a time, cool people all around me (including two young children in front of me!), killer show, perfect evening.

Well towards the end of the night I ventured to the Merch area and picked up one of those posters (one of the Guy B ones, not the other one) $30 which is a lot to me.  They didn't have tubes for them, so I put it in a bag and gingerly placed it on top of my coat in my seat.  Well long story short, the show ends, I grab my stuff . . . and no poster.  Someone actually stole it.  I turned around because I had made friends with the people behind me, and it was actually different people standing there.  I am guessing they came down from the higher sections.

Heartbroken my GF takes me by the merch area and in an incredible gesture ($30 is a lot to her too) buys me another one.  I am so beside myself and relieved, but now a bit uncomfortable that I basically spent $60 on a poster.  I chalk it up to a keepsake and move on.

Later . . .

We took a NJT Train home, I set my cell phone alarm to go off 15 minutes before we arrive in New Brunswick.  I wake up and wake up my GF.  I reach up to grab my poster . . . no poster.  Stolen.  Again.  I was so dejected I looked around, but no one seemed concerned with the situation.  I was too brow beaten to freak out, and sheepishly exited the train.

I have been bummed about this for 6 days, I wrote an email to MMJ seeing if they could find it in their heart to hook me up with a new poster, but I haven't heard anything yet.  My GF even called NJT at 3AM to see if someone had left it on the train after taking it, but obviously the chances are not good.

So bummed . . . throw me some good vibes.

Sorry to hear about that.

A similar thing happened to me at Telluride, I bought a Dylan poster for a keepsake (qualifying that because most people sell them on ebay because of the ridiculous profit there is to be made).  My wife propped it against a wall before she went to the restroom (not the smartest thing, but we'll blame it on alcohol and altitude) and it was gone.  She offered to get me another one, but I couldn't justify paying for another one.

True.  And I looked to replace it on ebay . . . an average of $225.  I almost vomitted.  No wonder someone stole them.  Ugh.

I was going to buy the Guy B. one, but I didn't want to hold it in the pit.

Ghosts, I don't think I met you, but I think I was in your vicinity, near pennylane and vespa and everybody at the front.  I brought a big, thick cardboard tube which managed to keep safe about 7 or 8 people's posters during the show.  it's a shame, because i probably could have fit one for you in there too.  next time...

Which eBay are you looking at?  I only see one listed, and it's going for $55.  Even the Burwells are only topping out at $199.

If we could find out who the artist was, it'd be worth contacting him/her to see if they have any extras.

Best of luck to you!

you remember the black shawl thing hanging on the speaker all night (vespa tells me this is Pooch the bear's scarf) well the sound guy threw it to me after the show. i'd be glad to mail that to ya---i am not too into posters but i would have sent you mine had i not already sent it to the framer :-(

i feel for ya, man. if you PM me your address, i'll send you this from the stage. i'll show it to you in the pics, if you look on the speaker behind JJ, there is this black blanket thing w/flowers hanging on the speaker. it's yours if you want it --i know it doesn't make up for it, but you should have something from the show other than a hangover and poster theivery memories

Right, but...there aren't any of the circus posters in the eBay completed listings.   :-?  Color me confused...

I don't think any of us know who did the circus poster.  It's not showing up on gigposters or expressobeans, either.  So odd!  I'd love to know which artist did it; it's pretty cool.

Wow, that would be incredible.  Thank you so much.  I am not a big poster person either, but I just wanted something to remember the night.  I could shadow box this thing and treat it as a convo piece.  This will help mend my broken NYE experience!  I will send u a PM.  Thank you a million.

Oh, okay.  They won't.

One is by Guy Burwell, a very well known, well respected, and EXTREMELY collectible poster artist.  The circus poster is by a relative unknown.  $55 is a stretch, just based on the poster market, supply and demand, etc.

Don't mean to lecture, just a poster geek trying to help   :)

Okay zoso i may be in a position to help. First off you were in one of the best cities in the world at one of the greatest arenas watching one of the greatest live bands with an obviously very cool girl.  I was also there (i know i'm Captain obvious) with my girlfriend and i purchased the same poster. I'm huge into pearl jam and never quite got the whole poster craziness, I've been to 19 PJ shows and have exactly one poster.  I bought the mmj nye poster because it was such a special event.  I grew up in Philadelphia and have been the victim of theft several times.  Anyway I exited NJT at Hamilton, our car was empty except for times square pukers and an mmj poster on the luggage rack with no one sitting near it.  I grabbed it and have been watching this board all week waiting to see if the owner would possibly surface. Dont know if its yours or not. 3 questions  What train were you on (timewise), describe the bag, and if possible to you remember your # out of 450.  If your answers match up I'll happily mail it to you.  Mine is currently being framed with mine and my girlfriends ticket, and if this is yours you deserve it back.  I read your post three hours ago and tried to log on, however i could not remember my log on info, so i re-regestered with my girlfriend(soon to be fiancee/wife) email!!!  By the way she is six months pregnant and insisted on going last week (we weren't in the pit) and had a blast, I'd say she's a keeper eh?  anyway enuff of me prattling on. answer those ?'s and lets sort this out.   jk

Wow.  What an amazing crew.

So first of all, I saw the pics of that scarf thingy, and that is a super super cool keepsake.  But I also believe that the found poster is mine.  I was on the 1:41 Train from Penn Station, arriving in New Brunswick around 2:38ish??  The poster was just in whatever bag they gave me at the Garden, and honest to god I have no idea what number it was, but as I recall it was not rubber banded or tubed or anything.  My GF and I were sitting on the left side of the train (facing the front), but as I said, when I got off, it was not in the rack.  Do you think it is possible one of the drunkards took it and then put it back?  Jack I am pretty sure that is my poster . . . and Penny, that is a really cool thing that you tried to do, and I would be more than happy to have it, but I feel funny taking back a poster AND the scarf.  What does the board think I should do?

I have to say, this is one VERY cool way to be introduced to you guys.  I am so blown away.  I need to come to the next get-together.  I said in my original post to throw me some good vibes, and that you did.

personally, as awesome as the scarf would be- I wouldn't want to take that from Penny- unless you're looking to create an unbreakable bond with Ms. Lane- although... spending NYE the way you did, you just created an unbreakable bond with thousands and thousands of people!  I would take the poster- its a hell of a story.  I was on that train also- across from the Sorority girls talking nonsense and the other group of girls with their friend who threw up on herself.  Got off at New Brunswick as well.

Pm ur address and i will mail it on friday.   My girl thinks that one of the young crew who were throwing up all over our train put it there, i didnt notice, but they clearly werent mmj fans (our car was really disgusting seriously with at least 5-6 people, for lack of a better word, being noisy and puking)  Glad I could help brother, again send me the pm and ur lovely poster will be on its way to its rightful owner :) :) :)  jack

GREAT stuff.  Thank you all so much for your efforts and kindness.

You should stick around, people here are super rad. The Jacket has the best fans ever, for realz. ALso, judging by your screen name, I bet you were bummed they didn't follow through with the whole zepplin thing. They couldn't have soundchecked the lemon song in Philly for nothing. :-?

I just gotta say- I've admired you're picture for a long time now- in fact, I think its safe to say that I love it.  I never not smile or laugh when it.

HAHAHA.  When I lived in Philly (80s), my friend made me take half a personal day to go down somewhere around Penn's Landing to see Van Damme.  Good grief, I cannot believe I ever agreed to that noise.

Wow.  I love this board - poster and owner reunited, and Penny gets to keep her scarf!

As an aside, that train sounded like a real vomit comet.  I'm surprised anyone (or anything) made it off unscathed.

NJT at night is almost as bad as a NYC subway. I took it back from MSG to New Brunswick back when MMJ had to cancel that show in '06 on NYE (with Trey and the Crowes). We had to change cars twice because people kept puking and a lot of Newark folk kept causing problems with the drunk college kids a/k/a easy targets.

That night we also found someone's cell phone and went out of our way to return it without so much as a thank you. The douchebags acted like we owed them this favor.

Ha ha.  I take the train all the time, and it is awesome.  However, NYE is always a mess.  As I get older it gets less entertaining.  Coincidently when I took the train home from the MMJ Radio City show, I saw someone puke as well.  A few years ago, taking the last train out of Penn on NYE coming home from a Moe. show it was like a vommitorium.

I took the "Path" back to Jersey City at 4am on NYE and fortunately everyone who needed to puke got it out of their system before boarding.  It was as crowded as the Boston subway after a Sox game but somehow I kept my precious Heineken top hat in tact.

Zoso, what an awesome story... I'm inspired to do a little dance in my cubicle now.  :D

and mega props to pennylane for offering the scarf (hadn't mentioned that yet)

If the PATH train ride were longer, and with that much of a crowd, vommiting could be epic.

My girlfriend makes fun of me because I'll also play it while shooting zombies on my xbox. Because if there's one thing that goes well with shooting zombies it's a Dolly Parton cover

QuoteSpeaking of vomit on NYE...Everywhere!

I usually hear the word PUKE-a short and nasty word.

Whenever I hear Vomit, I think of two things,

1) that funky-smelly stuff, the consistency of sawdust, that the janitor always had to sprinkle on Vomit at Parochial School before the nuns could clean it up
and
2) that song we always sang on the playround to the tune "Bridge over the River Kwai"

Comet, it tastes like gasoline.
Comet, it makes your teeth turn green.
Comet, it makes you vomit,
So get some Comet and vomit toda-a-ay!

Comet, it makes your teeth turn red.
Comet, it makes you wet your bed.
Comet will make you vomit,
So buy some Comet and vomit today.

I just read this whole thread.  I really dont know how to describe the emotional roller coaster that I just went through.

I started off feeling really bad for a very unlucky SOB.  Then Penny who we all know loves MMJ offers up her scarf.  I mean this is probably the coolest keepsake of them all.  You offered it up to a rank stranger.  Next we have someone who found your 2nd poster (I mean what are the odds) and now within a week it will be back to you.

that is the kind of things that really make me believe in the power of music....this board is full of good people who love an amazing band

Im sitting here blown away by this thread!

Easy explanation:

Rutgers University has a direct line into the City. Rutgers, a/k/a Slutgers, has one of the highest STD rates in the country. As an alum, it's a great time, but there are plenty of farkin' amateurs to go around.

Pt II: Hoboken, where kids go after they graduate. It's just, or at least used to be, like one giant frat row. Now it's become so pretentious and expensive that this trend is changing.

Hey all thought I'd update you on "the poster on the milk carton status", it is going into the US priority mail pile this morning, I work right outside philadelphia so it should be in north jersey to zoso by monday, tuesday at the latest.  Also a word on the pukers and vomit queens. There definitely were a bunch of overly drunk dopes on the way home, however they were definitely definitely in the minority, considering the millions that were in nyc for whatever event last week. Everyone have a great weekend and take care of yourself and each other and glad i could help you out zoso. jack  :)

i've been in Hoboken for 5 years and it's definitely changing--yeah, i think we have more bars per square foot than any city in the country (lol) but it's changing into double stroller and lattes now rather than frat row--- everyone was single when i first moved here and there was a bar/restaurant on every corner--now there are more banks and realtors, etc--the market crashing put a lot of the 20's post grads out of work so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Most of the people I know went to Union City or Jersey City because they couldn't swing the $1500/mo rent.

You know that porn shop about halfway down, I think near Mile Square? We learned in my property class that every so often a bunch of families try and shut it down and it has this air-tight first amendment case that keeps it going. I thought that was nifty.

So long as I can go to Mile Square and Maxwells, I'll still go to Hoboken. I just think it's a shame it became so unaffordable to live there. It has something for everyone, except parking.

I've still yet to see a YLT hannukah show, though I will one day. Typically I go whenever the Dirtbombs or Reigning Sound play. I love how you'll be standing there watching a show and you'll look to your right and Thurston Moore will be towering over you or someone like David Byrne will just be tapping their foot in the corner.

yeah that happened to my friend--he looked over and it was jim james (last year for yo la tengo shows)..i've seen sonic youth there for their hometown shows a couple years ago--i've also seen stephen malkmus there--such a great place. i hope it doesn't go under and become a starbucks or five guys burgers or something

I was so pissed when I heard JJ was at Maxwells, my Jacket antenna is normally pretty good. I couldn't believe I missed out on that show.
I'm right DT JC (the garden center) so keep me posted if you ever hear any news. I'll do the same.
Cheers.

Is that a rumor? Or are you just saying for general purposes? If Maxwells goes I will have no choice but to open my own venue one day. It's one of the last of the "legacy" venues that played home to so many different artists as they developed their career.

I hear Montclair has a new venue where the Decemberists played. But Monclair is no Hoboken.

i think it does pretty well--i haven't heard anything-sorry to worry you. i just worry myself about places like that but they get a really good crowd even for the local never heard of acts. great food, too...the best chili-great during winter time ;-) no one i want to see in Jan-i checked the listings last night.

Back to the subject...
I want to say that this is a sad story and it shouldn't happen to anyone. Your GF is a true sweetheart. With that said, I am surprised that you were so irresponsible with something that is so valuable. I am not trying to lecture or be an ass, but would you have left a $30 dollar bill on top of your coat at the concert or on the train and expect it not to be taken? We live in a hostile environment. BUT...I believe in Karma, so who ever took you posters will surely get what they deserve. Next time you buy a poster at a concert, make sure you dance with it all night, and then hold it tight in your arms as you sleep on the train. Your GF might get jealous, but at least you won't lose your poster, twice. ;)

I've gone there for the better part of the past 10 years for concerts, seeing bands I'm proud to admit and those things in high school where you look back on it and think either "what was I thinking" or "how teenage-emotional of me".

And i have yet to have the food. It always looks so good too.

I know Maxwells has an interesting history regarding the ownership (very principled) and they also have an extremely sporadic email notification system. They also have a picture of Joey Ramone eating a jar of Mayo next to the bar and Jukebox that I would love to own as a giant sized poster and frame it.

One of my favorite NYC sightings was David Byrne at Irving Plaza years ago for a Robert Randolph & the Family Band show.  At the time RRFB was still a "local" act, so it was cool to know I was traveling in the same musical circle as David Byrne, if only for one night.   :)

Haven't been to Maxwell's in ages...might have officially gotten too old to be squeezed into that place.   ;D

Heading north again tomorrow (hoping that the snow will wait until I'm in the city) for this party http://www.jambase.com/Articles/16263/Freaks-Ball-IX-01.10.09

Won't have the pleasure of riding NJT this trip, but for what it's worth, my train ride home after MMJ/Duo was fairly uneventful and vomit free.  My train ride home the night before, however, was not.

Every time I go to maxwells there is a lot more older people and a lot less hipster as the last time, and I'm talkin about major hipster acts like the Dirtbombs (they play there like twice a month it seems). It actually confuses me, but not as much as when Guidos walk in and don't immediately walk out.

I haven't seen RANA in close to half a decade. I didn't know they still existed.

I've only seen them once.  They played this same party 4 or 5 years ago and I thought they were awful.   ;D  Supposedly, they no longer have the 80's style keyboard player.  We'll see.

The New Mastersounds is great though!  Non-stop funky groove dance music...and, they're British.  :)

HAHA the one thing I remember about RANA was that they did have this horrible 80s feel! I saw them open for Project Logic in Syracuse many years ago. I think it was their halloween set where I did shrooms for the first time and thought that Logic was a giant robot dressed as death.

I think I've only missed a couple of Balls...It's a great time, with good people, and great music (most of the time)  ;)

I have seen most of the musicians listed, just not in the bands that they'll be playing with tomorrow night.  :)  This party is always a great big fun mess of music and mayhem!  ;D

Actually, I disagree with this statement. Sometimes, you do. Depends on how hard you slam your head against the stage whilst rocking out.

Not just NYE...that pashmina has been on stage every time I've seen them this year.  You are getting some major karma points for this, Penny!
