It wasn't my conversation to talk about, but word around the campfire is, that aMD and Jim had a nice little chat while bowling and having beers.  Apparently, Jim bowled a 155 to aMD's 154...or at least that's what Jim said.  ;D

And you can believe all, any or none of this.

Yes I could.

I wonder what the audience breakdown is for these shows? I mean, do you think anyone would dress up like M.Ward? Don't get me wrong...I dig him, too.

I think that there is a pretty decent brake down- when I saw Wilco this summer Conor opened for them.  There were a lot of Conor fans there- lots who didn't know much about Wilco.  I think that Jim has a pretty distinctive look- more so than the other two, it would be easier to recognize someone trying to dress like Jimmy boy!

Yeah...they will be playing the night before Monsters. They are playing Halloween @ the Ryman...so probably no guests appearances Sat night. But...this will be my 5th Avett's show of the year...and I cant wait for the double header. Anyhow...the Avett's are hitting their stride much like MMJ last summer. Its a great thing to watch a band "arrive".

With the Avett Bros., is it pronounced like the A in Apple or the A in Able?  I loved them at Forecastle but I still haven't given my copy of Emotionalism an honest effort.

I think they pronounce it with a long A sound (as in able).  They're such a great live act!

I'm so excited about the trip I've been kicking around the idea of coming down on Friday for the show.
Also, I've always heard it pronounced AY-vett bros A as in able.

Typically the band gives out Coupon Codes for The Brown, not this time?  Cheapest room = $169.

Add in ticket prices and this is starting to look more like a mortgage payment than a concert!

Where exactly does it say anything about a MOF after-party at BBC (link)?  Because we (aMD and co.) were talking about the after-party at Bearno's in the Highlands, with a private room upstairs and maybe some live music.

I think we should get this in order pretty soon...  :-/

I'm pretty sure the BBC has a cover and no music.  Bearno's should have no cover and music.  It's a little out of the way, but there will be some peeps there for sure.  I think the forum peeps are heading to Bearno's for the most part. Anyone is welcome to join us.

Can't wait to get down to Louisville to catch this show! I'm heading down solo from Denver. I do have an extra, front row blacony if anyone needs one.
Happy to see there are lots of folks meeting up pre-show, I'd love to meet you.  I'm staying at the Brown Hotel. This will be my first time to Louisville, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what the city has to offer. I'm thinking about checking out ear x-tasy, and I will def meet up for some pre-game at the BBC. Hope to see you there!

Well, I'll definitely be there. Lovedog knows the manager at Bearno's who is a Jacket fan as well so he was down to host an afterparty. Candace and I will be singing some tunes for sure.

It's the Bearno's on Bardstown Rd. in the Highlands, just to be clear, there are 3 or 4 of them. The preparty is at the same BBC we first met at four years ago.  :o Hope you can make it to both.

4th street live is within stumbling distance. You'll have to take a cab or stay sober enough to drive to get to the Highlands, 10 or 15 mins, wait we're talking about Halloween night so 15-20 but you get a chance to see the freaks on Bardstown Rd. You Brown Hotelers should ride together and get yellow cab to send one of their vans over.

Bearno's has a loft that is accessible to that badass beer garden as well as the restaurant.  There is also a private restroom up there, and they will probably designate a server for us.

Usually it costs quite a bit (especially on a Halloween Saturday night) to reserve that room (holds up to 50) but the General Manager, Michael was kind enough to lend it to us until we drop.  A) because he likes Jim/MMJ/MOF and B) he like to hear the Green Woods.  I do however, think it would be a nice gesture to eat up and drink up while we are there, so he will think it was worth letting us have.  What I mean is-if you're hungry after the show, don't stop by McDonald's...wait and grab some tasty grub at Bearno's.  They've got a lot of good beers on tap, as well as in bottles.  Full bar too!  (It's not in the can yet, but he'll probly give us drink specials!)

It will be a great scene.  I look forward to meeting a lot of you.  And I look forward to seeing the ones I already know.

Remember this: This is Halloween.  This is Monsters of Folk.  This is Louisville.  These are Jacket Peeps.  Don't sell yourself short.  I look forward to these events more than family holidays.  Louisville bars don't close until 4 am.  Be prepared to party.  We (some of you) may not meet up again for awhile if ever.  Don't be so tight that you "can't" afford a cab that night.  I promise, if you loosen up, you'll have a good time.

I look forward to seeing you all.

PEACE!

Toby

BBC-Downtown before the show.

I may be stepping out on a limb here, but if Jim decided to take the fellas around town after the show, I'd say there would be several other places on the list before BBC-Downtown.

But to be safe, if you wanted to go to BBC after the show and then head to Bearno's after you check that out, I totally get the peace of mind in that.

STILL!

i would LOVE to be in louisville with you all this weekend!!

I don't know what I'm wearing yet, but those we haven't met yet should all give us a heads up.

At Ear Xtacy we were all yelling Alwxznder! Alwx!  Well, I was yelling Alex, but Teo insisted we do our best to pronounce the W. Damn grumpy teachers!

I'm thinking about not dressing up... anyone have a problem with that? I was going to be a giant camera out of cardboard but i'm not finding enough time and I think it'd be a nightmare of a night in a huge cardboard box all night...
although I could hide a real camera in it!
my tix say no cameras... anyone had any clarification on that?

Riny, LP, you reading? can you get me on a list to take in a camera?? pretty please??

The key to Halloween costumes is to not have anything that's too cumbersome.  You need to be able to sit, stand, walk, and move as you normally would.  Also, you can't make anyone else around you uncomfortable because of it.

As it stands, I'm probly not going to dress up...but you never know what mood I'll be in during the final hours.   ;)

Well our beach vacation got canceled for various reasons I won't get into, so we decided to go to Kansas City for two days on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  Then while we were there, three of our five got sick.  Swine flu?  I don't know, but all we really had was bad cold like symptoms.  Anyway, we are all pretty much recovered and I was reallllly close to coming to Louisville to see you peeps.    But I didn't want to miss Halloween with the kids so I'm taking the whole family to Chicago tomorrow to try to redeem some vacation.  Going to the aquarium, American Girl Doll store (that's right man  8-)  Believe dat.) and most importanly  MOF on Friday night!   I really do wish I could be going to Louisville instead but it just wasn't in the cards.  Have a blast y'all, I will be thinking about you.  And I will warm them up for you real nice like.

are you making it up here for Halloween, Brian? It'd be a blast to hang with ya again!

yep, yep

Are you throwing the after party?

Well, I'll definitely be there. Lovedog knows the manager at Bearno's who is a Jacket fan as well so he was down to host an afterparty. Candace and I will be singing some tunes for sure.

It's the Bearno's on Bardstown Rd. in the Highlands, just to be clear, there are 3 or 4 of them. The preparty is at the same BBC we first met at four years ago.  :o Hope you can make it to both.

I'm getting over the flu right now but I'm still coming.  This sounds GREAT!!!  The BBC is right down the street from the Palace and across from The Brown?  I need to get the shuttle to Bearno's on Bardstown if I'm staying at The Brown?  Thanks Dylan.

You have the right location on the BBC. Hopefully those of you staying Downtown can shuttle together to save on travel costs.  We did it for the Waterfront show and it was pretty cheap that way.  Candace and I are actually doing our best to get over illnesses as well.  I'm going to do what it takes to play, even if it means getting a steroid shot that day.  Candace is a little more pessimistic about her status but she's got a couple more days to get better. Either way, we'll all find a way to have a great time, I'm sure.  ;) :)

Ahhh, got it. I was thinking more along the lines of ham's disease=obesity (as I've heard it referred to as), which I took as a dig to the fact that I was making the trip from the most obese state in the union. Sorry for the defensive response. I should have known a fellow jacket would not be so narrow minded as to judge one on their location.

No worries, I will be making the trip flu-free. Again, thanks for the recommendation.

i would SAY around 5:30? that costume thing is 5:30 so we can all go and cheer for goose's costume so he can get the backstage passes. (Goose, not sure if you wanted me to reveal your costume or not) the bar is across the street so i'm sure you can go back and forth. Think we're gonna be there from 5:30 on (hopefully?)

of course LD or aMD can confirm all this? i don't know the set up

QuoteMaking the trip up from Auburn, AL. Anyone have any downtown hotel recommendations? Thanks!

Stay at the Brown.

I hope no one brings hams disease to the show.

Thanks for your suggestion and open-mindedness, Sunshine.

I will not only be bringing my cousin f*cking friends, but also a host of cross burning, snaggle toothed rednecks for their first trip to the progressive state of Kentucky.

Looking forward to the show!

I'm not really sure what that meant, but I was joking around about people being sick and coming to the show. swine flu=hams disease. It was a joke that had nothing to do with your post. A bunch of us are staying at the Brown that is why I recommended it. I hope you come hang out with us. Also, its Soulshine.  :)

You are forgiven!  :-*

I was thinking the same thing, Penny.  I'll probably make down there in time for the costume contest just to watch and cheer on Goose and then head to the BBC after that.  So, probably around 6:00.  When's the soundcheck, I wonder? I'm still thinking about trying to get my way into that what-have-you.

I think the soundcheck is at 5pm, before the costume contest.  That's what the original (wfpk sign-up) email stated.  Doors open at 4:30, soundcheck at 5:00, costume party at 5:30, get wasted at BBC at 6:10, get our faces sound-humped at 8:14, head to Bearno's at 11:37, party until ?:??.

Hope to put some faces to some (screen)names when I get there.
I'm staying at the Brown, will prob wonder over to the venue to check out the costume contest, and then over to the BBC for some pre-game. After show, sounds like its Bearno's.
I am tall. I am blonde. I am hard to miss.

just got back to my hotel and i cant stop smiling. they did a whole set similar to the rest of the tour (highlights dear god, smoking from shooting). then after a 20 minute break the curtain rolled up to the guitar riff from Detroit Rock City with them all dressed as KISS (JJ was Gene Simmons) then they played some MoF songs and i believe a Bright eyes tune? and encored with Rock n Roll all night with some people in the best costumes on stage and zombies roaming the stage. JJ kept doing Gene Simmons esque mannerism. it was the icing on top of an awesome night. ;D

http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20091031/SCENE04/910310389/1011/SCENE/Monsters+of+Folk+pulls+out+stops+for+Halloween

There was no lack of sweetly surreal moments at Saturday night's Monsters of Folk show, from a ninja assassin swaying gently to a soft ballad to a 6-foot rabbit trying to hump Gene Simmons' leg. Maybe the band should play only Halloween gigs from now on, because everything else is surely downhill from here. Or at least a lot less colorful.

Jim James, M. Ward, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and the fifth Folk, Will Johnson, could have easily gotten by with their standard 21/2-hour set. But in honor of the occasion, they delivered an encore in full KISS regalia, costumes and make-up, surrounded by zombies, neon dancing robots, a Mexican wrestler and said rabbit.

They opened with "Detroit Rock City" and closed with "Rock and Roll All Nite," leaving the crowd wanting more. But the love gun was out of ammo. The boys were spent.

Another song would have been too dangerous, anyway. Oberst, as Paul Stanley, nearly broke an ankle trying to negotiate his 8-inch heels, and his rock star climb onto the drum riser looked more like a geriatric trying to get out of his Hoveround. Their point was well made, however; Monsters of Folk is a band of serious musicians who don't take themselves seriously, at least not all of the time.

There were plenty of big moments, sans grease paint.

The band was on a carousel all night, trading off instruments and songs with equal ease as they worked through material from the recent "Monsters of Folk" album and their own catalogs from Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket and Ward's string of solo albums.

Some of the MoF songs, especially "Say Please" and "Losin Yo Head," got an extra shot of rock 'n' roll dynamics while others grew more stately ("His Master's Voice").

Non-Monsters songs fit seamlessly, with the singers often teaming up to dramatic effect. James and Oberst shared a beautiful version of My Morning Jacket's "I Will Be There When You Die," for example, and a full band version of MMJ's "Smokin From Shootin" was the night's most powerful anthem.

Ward was quietly charismatic while in the spotlight, with an authority that snuck up on you. Oberst was more hit and miss, commanding on songs such as "We Are Nowhere and It Is Now" but tedious on his Dylanesque stuff; think "It's Alright Ma I'm Only on Desolation Row."

But at the end of the night the only significant problem was speculative — what if Monsters of Folk get so big that its members can't get back to their day jobs? Then again, maybe that's not such a bad problem to have.

Long post coming:

Incredible show last night. The first two songs ("Say Please" and "The Right Place") were both great, but the first song that really took it to another level, IMO, was "Vincent O'Brien". The performance was completely stunning, FAR better than the album version. "The Sandman, The Brakeman and Me" was also an improvement on the recording, albeit in a less dramatic way. They just all seemed to be more into it last night. I've seen some great guitar players in my life, but Matt is certainly one of the best I've witnessed. He plays in a really odd, fascinating, brilliant way. I loved his little solos in the songs he did by himself. Also, "One Life Away" was a complete surprise for me as I haven't seen it on any of the setlists. Considering my love of Transistor Radio, it was a very good choice.

I went to this show a fan of Connor's MoF songs but still a little wary of his other output. With his first song, "Soul Singer in a Session Band" he convinced me to become a fan.  Throughout the rest of the night everything he did impressed me. Their performance of "At the Bottom of Everything" was one of the highlights of the night, as was the version of "Smoke Without Fire", which was done as a duet with Matt.   Great stuff. During the intermission, while the guys changed into their Kiss gear, I went and bought Lifted, I'm Wide Awake It's Morning and Cassadaga and enjoyed listening to them on the ride back. I think I'm going to have to buy everything now.

Of course, Jim's stuff was my favorite. Seeing as it was Louisville, it seemed like he was the favorite of the crowd too. His songs were flat out beautiful. I loved hearing "Bermuda Highway" again, and Will did a nice job backing him up on it. "Wonderful (The Way I Feel)" was great to hear for the first time. Some people have been complaining about Connor's singing on "Smokin' From Shootin'" and "I Will Be There When You Die", but, while it didn't especially enhance the songs, I definitely didn't have a problem with it. Also, "Dear God" was another that was better than the album version. The jamming on that was unreal. Probably the thing that impressed me the most was the way that he complimented the other band member's songs. Throughout the whole night, he just kept making these incredible noises that I had no idea a human being could produce. It was absurd how perfect his vocals were. I was surprised to see the set end with "His Master's Voice", because it made me wonder what they'd close the show with. . .

The encore was a blast. When the curtain first came up, I couldn't believe it. To me, it was especially hilarious to see Matt dressed that way for some reason, though Connor and Jim's antics were great. They skipped At Dawn, probably to keep the energy up, and played an awesome version of "Losin' Yo Head" for Jim's song instead. And then, it was "I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night" with at least twenty-something people up there in various costumes dancing. It was a very surreal ending to an absurdly good show.

Anybody get a full setlist? I know most of the songs that were played, but not in order. Anyway, for those who want to know:

MOF: Everything except Slow Down Jo, Ahead of the Curve and Magic Marker.

Jim: Golden, Smokin' From Shootin' (Full Band w/ Connor on the 3rd verse), Wonderful (The Way I Feel) (w/ Matt), Look at You (Solo), I Will Be There When You Die (w/ Connor), Bermuda Highway (w/ Will)

Connor: The Big Picture (w/ Mike), Lime Tree (w/ Jim), Smoke Without Fire (w/ Matt), We Are Nowhere and It's Now (w/ Mike), At the Bottom of Everything (w/ everyone taking a verse), Hit the Switch, Another Travelin' Song

Matt: Vincent O'Brien, One Life Away (w/ Jim), Lullaby + Exile (w/ Connor), Chinese Translation (Solo), One Hundred Million Years (Solo), To Save Me

Plus Detroit Rock City and I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night.  ;D

The show was a blast.  The KISS costumes were a nice surprise.  M Ward was amazing and they worked really well together.  The crowd gave M a lot of love so hopefully he'll come back sometime (this was the first show he's played here to my knowledge).  It was definitely the first time I had seen him and I was blown away.

Thanks to Goose for the tickets and the parking pass.  It was so nice hanging out with everyone.  Meeting up with familiar peeps and getting to know new ones.  I can't wait to do it again sometime.

Hey Everyone,

I would just like to preface everything I'm about to say with a big THANK YOU to everyone here for making Saturday so special!
Saturday exceeded my expectations in every way. The show totally blew my mind. I was so impressed by the whole thing. Dear God was explosive and amazing. Smokin From Shootin was bad ass. The whole section I was sitting in was on their feet about ½ way through. I almost cried during Golden and His Master's Voice...so beautiful. M. Ward blew me away! I'm not terribly familiar, but I'm about to be. He was incredible. The whole KISS ending was not only one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen, but they made it badass. The crowd was amazing. I was a little surprised they didn't come back out with how hard the crowd was roaring, but after an encore like THAT there's really nothing left to top it.
Penny, L Dogg and I are out front before the show and I turn around and see a pig costume with H1 (or N1 I cant remember) and I say "hey she's got hams disease!" then, someone steps out of the way to reveal Patrick in the matching costume. L Dogg says "that's f*ckin' Patrick!" and Penny took a picture of them. Patrick's wife complimented Penny on her coat and we all parted ways. I just stood there and smiled. I think Penny and L Dogg had some other good encounters that night.
Finally, I would just like to say that driving out of Lville yesterday I had a heavy heart. I think part of it was sadness that an amazing night that I had been looking forward to for so long was over, but also that my heart was full of gratitude for finally meeting everyone. Sometimes you cross paths with people in life and they float in and out seamlessly and sometimes you cross paths with people and they give you that feeling of "home." Well, I felt like I was "home" on Saturday night.

I am honored to be here and call all of you my friends. I can't wait to see you all again.

Loves,

Soulshine (or Sunshine if you're L Dogg)  :P

I think I just came down...

My interpretation of the night is just as sporadic as the highlights were.  There is no order...there are no favorite parts.  However there are superlatives upon superlatives.  Be prepared.  This ramble goes like this:  BTW-most sentences will begin with I, my, or me...because I am the only one who knows how this night made me feel.

First of all, I'm glad Penny came down for the show.  While we both chatted it up with everybody else more than each other, knowing she was near-by felt good to me.  I'm sad she had to go back.

I got to meet Patrick (picture to come) and his wife before the show and expressed my love for the best drummer in Rock n Roll.  I got to meet Tommy after the show (picture to come), and got some pretty good vibage and info on the future of the Jacket!

BBC pre-show: Penny, Goose and I walk in to open arms from TEO!  A good sign that this will be a memorable evening.  Someone I look forward to seeing every time I know I'll see him.  And Nancy (CrazyLove) was just as precious and lovely as ever, as she shared the same excitement we all did.  It was good to see Candace sitting in the booth eating pasta and drinking a beer...she had been beneath the weather lately.  I knew then that the after show was ON!  Even though I'd seen Dylan earlier in the day, seeing him trying to hide his enthusiasm behind his big beard  meant something special was going to happen.  Dylan knows a lot about the people on the Forum and is good to make someone feel comfortable.  I always look forward to looking straight up at the ceiling and seeing Kory looking down at me.  Even though I've never tried, Kory seems to be one of the most huggable people on the planet.  And he is always so selfless.  Good conversation, flawless photography, top secret information, recording equipment, etc.  Sometimes all of the above.  Of course KC is always a pleasure to talk to.  I think it surprised us both that we hadn't known each other as long as we thought we had.  And the adorable Sunshine...e'hem...Soulshine.  What a sweetie!  Fellas, somebody needs to snatch her up!  Cute and funny and cool...'nuff said.  I also got to meet another veteran whom I've been a fan of for awhile...a handsome fella who's known as Sweatboard.  What a cool cat.  Reserved...sharp ...kind.  As well as his wife AnnaBeth.  Both a pleasure to talk to.  The Dark, swooped down from Cincy (with Dad in tow) to grace us with his shining light.  THE coolest 16-17 year old on planet earth.  Steve is to cool, what Gorilla Glue is to strong adhesives.  We didn't visit a whole lot because I felt guilty drinking and smoking around him.  Ms. Yvon rolls in as the cutest candy corn this guy has ever seen, with a few friends accompanying her.  Wendy, who'm I'd met at the Waterfront show last year, and Heather, Ross and Paul(?), I think.  All great people.  Very nice.  Flyguy, the artist formerly known as KYKid, drifted in after the UofL game, and let us know how cool he is.  I knew he was good people.  I see Goose a few times a week, and he's arguably the best guy in this solar system. But to hang out with him at Jim related events is so fucking cool because none of our other friends "get it" like we do.  His buddy, Matt seemed to be nice, although I didn't get to talk to him much.  My endorphins were so flooded by that point, I couldn't even touch the ground anymore.  I know there were a couple of others from the board who showed up right before the show, but currently I draw a blank.  And then there were some Forum lurkers who introduced themselves.  There was even a guy who looked like Eisenbraun, even though we knew he wasn't there.

Great costumes.  I saw a great Bob Dylan.  I loved Wooderson and Cynthia from Dazed & Confused.  Papa Smurf and Smurfette were cool!

A block down the street was a delta of people spilling into The Palace.  This is where we saw the pigs, H1 and N1 (Pat and Bridgid, respectively)!  The show started but the camera got confiscated, so we had to deal with that shit.  Finally got to our seats 8th row, center isle (side Jim)...great spot for it all.  And really didn't think about anything except how great they looked and sounded and how perfect this crowd was.  The great songs sounded better, and the studio cuts we were all afraid might not translate well live, were pristine.  *Props to Tieoptional for assisting me with some of the Matt and Conor songs I was unfamiliar with.  But those guys' songs were great too.  Matt is so fucking cool, I can't stand it.  What a sweet guitar player, and he's got a smugness about him that pulsates from another time period altogether. It's like he knows who killed JFK or something...and he's the only one. I dig the shit out of Conor, I don't care what anybody says.  He's a good songwriter, and he has full credibility, as far as I'm concerned.  His voice and presence seems to have finally grown into his lyrical wisdom.  I was always anticipating what Mogis was going to play, and he performed so well...however, I missed that amazing solo on Say Please.  What an amazing musician.  I got to see Will Johnson this summer and I like his style.  He really shined on stage, I thought and played whatever roll he needed to.  And I thought it was cool when he came out and played with Jim on Bermuda Highway.  To answer the question in the thread about the next monster...Will Johnson.  He already is!

Jim James.

For the record: I'm glad they're playing songs from Evil Urges on this tour.  It's a really good album...accept it.  Secondly...Monsters of Folk fucking ripped Smokin' From Shootin', and tried to claim it as there own.  I'm not saying they did...but it's arguable.  Just sayin'.

I really got to bond with Nancy during the intermission.  I just want to point that out.  It's not often that you can talk about intangibles, and people get it.  But I think we are totally on the same page.  It's such a good feeling.  Thanks, dear.

I loved the KISS thing.  I loved when Conor had trouble standing on his amp with the platforms on...and when he did, everybody cheered.  He almost had as much trouble getting down, though because his amp kept teetering.  They were pretty determined to put on those costumes and keep them on.  They're all such little guys, they didn't quite fill them out.  LOL.  Jim did, of course, but....

Bearno's after-show:  The Green Woods performed one helluva show, in my opinion.  Most of the folks from the pre-show party were there, with a small few missing, and several more added.  Over-all I think there were upwards of 30 or more people there.  At any given point there were 20-25 of us there listening, eating, drinking, enjoying, talking, etc.  TEO Speedwagon sat front row and rocked it with a smile!  I felt, and still feel very fortunate that I got to play some songs with Dylan and Candace.  I've been a fan of theirs since I first heard them play and I'm proud they asked me to join them.  And I don't think it sounded bad at all, if I do say so my-damn-self!  But when I wasn't playing, I enjoyed listening.  They're a good team, and I like to see and hear them.  Good people.  I'm just glad Candace had a voice.  I think we all were.  You guys were great!

Thanks to Michael Hieatt (Bearno's GM) who set up and let us use the space for free.  I know he enjoyed the show (even though he was a little under the weather) and was glad to see everybody out at his place.  I'm proud you all showed up, and spent your money there too.  That means we have some weight to swing around every time we want to get together!

Got to meet MarkusErealEus (from Denver) and a few others at the end of the night, but the visits were short because the night was over.  I hope to see you again Mark.  You're cool.

It was all very surreal.  I got to see the best band currently touring-which happens to be one of the best bands of all-time.  Got to see 3/5ths of the best band of all time...two of which I talked to.  My woman was there.  My friends were there.  It was in my city...Possibility City...Louisville, Kentucky.  I ate Pumpkin with Chocolate Chip cookies.  I drank good beer.  I knew that everybody I cared about was either safe, or with me.  I floated along about six inches off the ground Saturday night, and I didn't need any chemicals to assist.  It was pure adrenaline and exuberance.  I felt like Rudy being carried off the field.  I felt like Cinderella at times, being carried and carted with royalty.  I felt like I was the Grand Marshall of the Halloween Parade in Louisville, riding on the biggest, grandest float.  Somehow I felt like I was the luckiest guy in the world that night.  And I really don't think I wasn't.

Halloween is one of those times, like New Year's (or any holiday, for that matter) that sometimes has a big build up, and never much of a payoff.  I look forward to it, but it never meets my expectations.  I'm usually let down in some capacity.  This was different.  This night far exceeded any expectation I ever considered considering.  It was perfect. Maybe it had to do with Jim's cosmic relationship with Halloween.  Maybe it was Yvon's Rampant Badassery stickers.  Maybe it was because team belt buckle was four strong.  Maybe it was because I needed a fucking break from reality.  Maybe it was because of all you monster folkers make this world a better place!  Maybe it's because I don't even know everybody's name, but you're all still family to me.

Jacket peeps are better than any fraternity.  Better than any church or community.  Better than...anything I could dream up.  You people are the best.  Thank you for being out there

Peace, love and monsters!

I flew down to Louisville for this show for a very specific reason; I wanted to see Jim James in his hometown.
When MoF announced the tour, I was bummed they decided to skip Denver, but welcomed it, in a way, as an opportunity to travel and catch a different flavor in another city.
A couple weeks before the show, my friend cancelled on me, leaving me w/ 2 tickets and the prospect of flying to a new city by myself, not knowing anyone.
Now, I've been traveling to see live music for my entire adult life, but this was the first time I've ever gone solo, and honestly, I felt a lot of anxiety at the prospect of arriving somewhere w/o the security blanket of "my people" to shelter me from bordom or awkward situations.
Luckily, it went well, for the most part.
The show was, in a word, amazing.
I was very concious of the fact that it is very rare to see these musicians together in this type of setting.
Who knows? Maybe never again.
I don't do the whole play-by-play review thing, but the highlights were many.
Jim, standing by himself on stage, laying down a heartfelt and poignet version of "Look At You." Of course, "Golden" was the reason I traveled 1000 miles in the first place. Absolutely beautiful! Oberst and Mogis delivered some great Bright Eyes material, including a super-rare live performance of "The Big Picture", which was a real treat. Matt and Conor also laid down the lovely duet "Smoke w/o Fire".
Again, super, super rare and very well played.
M. just killed everything he played. He def impressed me and made me want to get deeper into his music. Dude is such an accomplished player.
Also can't forget to mention "I Will Be There When You Die", which was the emotional highlight for me, and "Smokin' From Shootin'" just wrecked the house. You could feel the energy pop up about ten notches when Jim laid that one down!
Encore was just full-on Halloween fun!
Jim played the Gene Simmons thing up big time, and it was great!
Overall, I was very happy w/ the performance, and I loved the venue.

I was expecting to meet a bunch of locals who had seen MMJ  hundrads of times, but as it turns out, not so much.
The truth is, Jim and the boys were long neglected in their hometown, and that's a real shame.
Louisville, like a lot of cities, has sooooo much potential, but alas, much of it goes unrealised.
And don't get me wrong, I met many wonderful, humble, great vibin' folks who love music with an incredible passion (Love Dogg, Penny, Soulshine, Dylan etc.) and I'm not taking any shots at individual peeps here.
All I'm saying is: the show at the Palace was not sold out, and that's an embarassment. Hell, Oberst sells out any venue in Omaha he plays.
Don't tell me Jim doesn't deserve the same adulation from his hometown.

The after show at Bearno's was highlighted by some great, heartfelt renditions of many Jacket tunes and some other choice covers.
Thanks you again for the performance and for giving this old soul something to smile about!
For me, its hard to let go of that after-glow feeling I get after a show, because I just want it to last forever.
I had a rather pointed exchange with a woman who was very, very defensive about her favorite band, and that made me laugh. It just reminded me of that irrational passion that all obsessive music lovers feel for the bands they love, and I dig it. I can relate.
Its strange now, after all these years, to come to a point in my life where I feel like I've found something in Jim's music that stirs those old feelings of enchantment and magic which I felt so briefly with the Grateful Dead all those years ago.
I hope to see you all at the next show!

Wow....thanks for that.  We are going to the Beacon show on Sunday and your post was really moving, and so well put.  I, too, find it hard to believe that there are still tix left for the Beacon show.  My husband and I both also followed the Dead (he more than me) and value the live music experience SO much....especially with someone as bloody brilliant as Jim James!

Best wishes!

I've been a long-time lurker here, but never posted.  I've been a huge MMJ fan ever since I heard Z and seen them three times in concert.

I went to Bearno's after the show and met Penny Lane, Soulshine and others from this board.  I was the guy in the Devo costume.

I drove down from Cleveland with a friend of mine and we stayed at his uncle's house, which is about 20 minutes outside of downtown.  We knew about the costume contest before the show, with the chance to go onstage as a prize, so we got there right at 5:30.  There were four categories: sexy, scary, unique and MoF member.  I tried out for the sexy category, and to my amazement, I won!  I was suprised to win becuase there was a smoking hot girl in a border patrol costume to beat (and the guy who was running the contest told me afterwards that she complained to him that she didn't win).  I was going to be on stage with the Monsters of Folk!  Each of the winners was allowed to bring a friend with them, and we were to meet in the lobby at 9:10.

The show itself was incredible.  These guys make such an amazing sound together.  Before I heard about MoF, I knew next to nothing about M. Ward, but this show was officially made me a huge fan of him.  One Hundred Millions Years was a commanding solo performance, and the full-band rendition of To Save Me was a highlight.

Before I knew it, it was time to go backstage.  Now, while the onstage experience ended up being an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience, it came with a huge, huge catch.  We had to stay backstage for over an HOUR until it was our time to go to the stage for the encore, meaning that we missed an almost 45 minute chunk of the concert, including Smokin for Shooting.  We knew it was about time to go on when a roadie came back with a setlist in his hand.  I tried to get a look at it, and my eyes scrolled down to see what the encore was, and I damn near lost my mind.  As soon as I saw the words "DETROIT ROCK CITY" in block letters, I knew exactly what was about to happen.

It was about quarter after 10 when it was finally our time to go to the stage.  We were told that we could watch the encore from the side of the stage, and then go on the stage with the band for the last song.  We were led down a series of hallways and up a flight of stairs, and as we got closer the music was getting louder and louder until we got to the top of the steps, turned a corner, and saw the guys in their KISS costumes, which is a mental image that I will never forget.

All of us stood on the left side of the stage as we watched the first 4 songs of the encore, including a kickass Losin Yo Head.  Finally, they started playing "Rock and Roll All Nite" and we all run on stage.  For the first few moments, I could hardly believe it was happening.  I would look one way and see Mike Mogis dressed up as Ace Frehley standing a foot away from me, then turn around and see a crowd of thousands cheering.  It was absolutely surreal.  I made my way over (or danced my way over, that is) to JJ, and as I stood behind him, he was a towering figure in his platform boots.  I danced some more over by him, when one of the stage crew (wearing a mask), grabs me and tells me to go the front corner of the stage in front of JJ.  I did so, and danced some more, and even tried to headbang a bit until my flower pot hat fell off! The song comes to an end, and as the band is walking off stage, I go up to Jim, put my arm around his shoulder and say to him "That was awesome!" which he smiled at.  I get directed toward the exit, which takes me out to the side aisle.  I start running down the aisle, and everyone is giving me high fives!

After all of that was over, I make my way outside and meet up with another of the contest winners (the robots, who won the unique category).  The robots (who were a couple) were from Lousiville, and they were planning on going to a place called the Magnolia Bar, where they were having their own contest, so me and my friend went with them.  When we arrived, there were several people who recognized me from being on stage.  For the contest, they cleared off the bar and all of the contestants walked across it in order to be judged.  I walked across and got a pretty good response, but didn't win there.  My new robot friends, however, won the top prize of $100, and bought us several rounds.

After that, they dropped me and my friend off at Bearno's, which wasn't too far from where they lived.  I knew about it from reading this board as I was getting ready for this show.  I got there after the afterparty had winded down, but I still had a great time meeting you guys, and it was a perfect nightcap for an unforgettable night.

Thx tbd, much love from one Head to another!
And one more shout out to my boy Love Dogg- def felt that old-time spirit from you too, dude, thx for the props in your post.

Its funny tbd, because I think the Jacket scene is soooooo young (not in the age of people that see shows, most are mid 20's- 40'2) but just in the fact that it hasn't really fully developed yet.

The band is still growing, changing, morphing stylistically. And I think they are getting more and more fans as the word spreads that they bring it live.

But its funny, because the scene doesn't yet have a defined asthetic or ethos, which is refreshing in a lot of ways, and also kind of grin-inducing, because I'm used to hanging around super-surly Deadheads and Phishheads who just bag so hard on the bands, but are still charming and lovely in their own way.
Hanging out with the Jacket folks on Sat nite was a trip, because everyone is so nice! Seriously, they are so kind and considerate and humble and loving, and its great, but also a bit weird for me, because I'm so used to being around surly Heads. lol

I think the potential for MMJ is immense.
I see their next tour as being a high-water mark in terms of the scene really growing and attracting new music-lovers.
But as anyone who was seeing Phish back in the mid-90's can tell you, the potential for a bigger audience can often bring with it a whole nightmare of bad vibes and ugly "wook" behavior that can really tarnish a scene and make it suck.
I hope, for all the good people I met in Louisville this weekend, that doesn't happen.
But if it does, seek out the Deadheads. We can tell you all about it. Believe me. We've been there, and we know.

Much Love.

I posted pictures on facebook but am having some issues posting them here from work. I'll try to get that sorted by tomorrow.. I think I snapped a pic of everyone (even Lifewasted in his Devo costume).

I can't top the previous posts about how magical the night was, from seeing Patrick and Tommy, getting to share it w/L Dogg, meeting up w/new people I've wanted to meet for a while (Soulshine!), seeing old friends, making new ones (Lifewasted, marcusaurelius, flyguy).

The show was terrific, not sure the Beacon show on Sunday could come close. I had never been to the Palace, but it's a really beautiful venue, really scenic inside, good sound. Even though I didn't like that I had to check my camera, it was NICE for once not to have everyone in front of me holding up their cameras and phones snapping pics (thank goodness Goose had his iphone!) Highlights for me were Smokin from Shootin and Another Travelin' Song. The KISS costumes were terrific and Jim definitely stole the show. He WAS Gene Simmons. The others looked great, but not like Jim. Also, I am fairly certain that these shows are turning all non-Conor fans (or on the fence Conor fans) into real fans. I know Crazylove will say it was M who stole the show, but I think it was Jim's night, and he and Conor really carried things.

Bearnos afterwards was perfect. The setting was intimate but people could still do their own thing, go outside and hang out and smoke, order food, talk or listen to the tunes. Candace and Dylan were really on as usual, and it was exciting to see LD get up there with them. The songs they were playing were icing on the cake because it was more like a celebration of what brought us all together, and so many great songs that move all of us, and it doesn't get any better for me than watching them and singing along to Ophelia. For me, it means as much as seeing MOF do Detroit Rock City, probably more. **They NAILED Don Dante for those of you who stuck around for the second show.

Want to especially thank Ms Yvon for the sticker!! I had been meaning to send you my address for a long time! I really want to call you by your porn name now (Candy Corn).

I am still coming down and re-adjusting to life post-Halloween show. Hearing Smokin from Shootin left me craving some Jacket stuff, now I relate to all those critics who were let down by the fact that it wasn't a Jacket show. Luckily, I'll get to re-live some of this on Sunday night at the Beacon.

Summing up, glad to meet the new people, I hope you'll stick around~! Even more gladder to see the people I already know and love. I made a great new friend and sister in music-hood (Soulshine). I got to watch Jim James with someone I love, then celebrate the night w/so many others who mean more to me than they'll ever know.  I had been really down a lot in the weeks previous, but now I realize that we all have the power to get our souls stirred a little, and there are people out there like Jim James who will see to it that it happens and I'm lucky to have you all to share it with. I feel rejuvenated in a way.

Those of you who didn't make it, you were there in spirit :-)

I would be offended if you DIDN'T offend me! JK  In all seriousness, I'm glad you and Crazylove managed to find each other. One of you always seems to wander off!  ;D ;D  (i will never forget receiving a text message from you ONE HOUR into the show "where's my wife? where is everyone" LOL)

That's really not very close to what it was. It was more organized into individual solo sets than that. Here's (I think. . .), an order a bit more accurate than the one above.

Say Please
The Right Place
Soul Singer in a Session Band
Vincent O'Brien
Smoke Without Fire (Connor and Matt)
The Big Picture (Connor and Mike)
We Are Nowhere and It's Now (Connor and Mike)
Golden
Temazcal
Baby Boomer
Man Named Truth
One Hundred Million Years (Matt Solo)
Chinese Translation (Matt Solo)
One Life Away (Matt and Jim)
The Sandman, The Brakeman and Me
At the Bottom of Everything
Goodway
To Save Me
Lime Tree (Connor and Jim)
Bermuda Highway (Jim and Will)
Wonderful (The Way I Feel) (Jim and Matt)
Look at You (Jim Solo)
Map of the World
Smokin' From Shootin'
Dear God (Sincerely MOF)
Hit the Switch
His Master's Voice

And then the encore above is correct. That's not even close to perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.

Ok, so at my age, I think a person can get kinda jaded after so many great concerts.  I saw the Beatles at 13, I once went to 5 Mellencamp shows on 5 consecutive nights, I saw Springsteen 3 times in one weekend,  I stood side by side with Jim's Aunt front and center at the MMJ waterfront show just to name a few...........but OMG Monster of Folk may have just changed my life :exclamation
I can't thank Miss Y and Wendi enough for giving me the chance to sit with them down front and soooooooooooo close to Jim!  And yes, Miss Pennylane, I do have a new found love of M. and his amazing abilities, and I do think he is quite an extraordinary musician with his style of guitar picking, but there is no doubt that is was Jim's night!
And I just have to say this for you Dylan, what is up with his hair?!  I like the all glammed up look, but Jim, the hair......bring it back.  I can even handle you parting it and gluing it down, but I miss your beautiful hair!
LoveDogg, I love you!  You and I are together in our own galaxy!  You really do get it, I'm glad that I can be honest and open with you and you don't think I'm some kinda "crazy"!
And I definetly think Jim was on that galaxy with us on Smokin and Look at You!  I am reliving those moments and many others.
Meeting up with all of our "old" jacket friends and making the new ones added to the thrill of the evening.
I don't know if there can or ever will be in my lifetime another such glorius night,  It was like all the stars came together(except for not getting to sit with my wonderful husband and share at the same time) and made the world right for one moment in time.
Sorry for waxing so poetic, but that is what Sat. night was.  It was poetic, it was wonderful, it was warm and fuzzy, it was some of the best people in the universe meeting up, it was a night that I will always remember.  Thank you Monsters and Friends.

Hello guys and gals,
I had a great time at the pre-party, show and after-party at Bearnos. It was a pleasure meeting all you wonderful people and if this world could be filled with people with the compassion and love that you guys have, it would be a far better place. Hopefully I wasn't too much of a drunk and annoyed anyone. I got to the show a couple songs in as they started right on time. I did set up my taping gear from an excellent location my buddy Goose hooked me up with, thank you my dear friend!
Toby, Dylan and Candice are always a pleasure to be around... so attentive and ready to listen to my beer rambles. Toby, I'll hug you anytime man! It take a few beers for me to loosen up and get chatty but once that switch gets flipped, it's hard to turn it of. Good seeing Yvon all the way from LA, the Beautiful Penny from NYC, SoulShine from I can't remember where, thanks for coming to our fair city. Brian from the Knox whom I hadn't seen since Jim was solo at the Rud over two years ago, TEO and Nancy from up north as well as the awesome young man, Dark... kid, you rock more than you know for having your eyes so open to the world around you at such a young age. I wish I had 10% of what you have mentally when I was your age. I feel I was just weened from the system 5 years or so ago.
I felt naked not taking my camera and just took the wife's point and shoot that still managed to get confiscated but that's fine, the directions were right there on my ticket and i still tried to cheat the system. At least they didn't get my gear I was taping with, YES!
I've given the show a listen and i like how it sounds for being clipped on the little sign designating my are as VIP (thanks again Goose!!!)
Like I said, I came in during Connor's "Soul Singer" and "Vincent" was after that so in the setlist above that needs to be flip flopped. Sorry I missed Right place and Say Please... but the rest of the recording is on it's way down the pike!
talk to you all soon!
much love and respect to all my friends here and for not making it look weird to be friends with folks you meet from the interwebs!
Kory

OH yea, the wireless network at the palace was named, "Interweb". I can't help but to think Jim had something to do with that!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to thank KC and Cory for the ride to Bearno's. And the ride back to the brown with Soulshine and Markus in the taxi.
And Miss Y, I will be putting the rampant badassery on my car, Thanks!  Hope I don't get called into the prinicipals office, even so, it will be worth it!  I'm listening to the Monsters at my desk right now, thanks to my outstanding hubs!  I have kids taking tests, I think it will absolutly help improve their scores ;D
Cory, did you tape Candace and Dylan as well?
Yeah, it's good to have friends like all of you.

i thought it would be kind of dumb to post this but we sat across the aisle from Jim's dad (if someone knows for sure it wasn't his dad, feel free to correct me), I overheard Patrick talking to him in the lobby so I knew who it was, and he is the spitting image, same profile. So it was also a great night watching him watch Jim. He must have been so proud.

All the good vibes emanating from Louisville!  Really happy for you guys and I'm so glad you had a good time   :)  LifeWasted, your story was incredible...and it's always great to "meet" another PJ fan   ;)

Curious about this take, though....Louisvillians, what are your thoughts?  I was really surprised to hear the show hadn't sold out.

Quote

I read that too, ALady, and I'm sad to say it isn't necessarily untrue.  It blows my mind, because I've lived here for ten years, and I call it home...but I didn't grow up here.  I have a lot of friends who went to church with Jim, or knew him in little league, or remember him playing a gig in middle school.  But the sad thing is, is that some of these dickheads apparently think he is so accessible that they can always hold on to the Jim Olliges aspect of him, and "say" they knew him when he was younger.  The truth is (sorry to offend anybody here), but I think they're jealous that their "favorite" bands really aren't as good as anything Jim does.  DMB is not as good as the Jacket.

I think what it is, is that there are so many people who think it's "cool" to like music, because lots of people actually do like music around here.  But those people don't actually know how to like music.  They don't have their own brains to make their own decisions. They say, "I hate the Eagles..." because The Dude made it cool to say.  They like DMB because their friends do.  Its a position thing.  Instead of being supportive and proud, they think "I don't like Jim because I won't allow a peer to appear better than me."   That's the vibe I get.  They see him as accessible...and that he shouldn't be as big as he is.

However, if you talk to Dylan or other people who knew Jim before and at the beginning of the Jacket, you see that perspective reveals that Jim has always had a star quality.  Jim was always bigger than life.  I call it "The Pedestal Factor."  For every person who puts someone on a pedestal, there are at least that many to try and knock them off.  This town, as great as it is, has a big competitive, egotistical, macho, click-ish, I'm better than you vibe sometimes.  It's really disheartening and confusing and I hope I'm wrong.  But I don't think I am.  It's sad.  And I'm very disappointed.

If Kentucky and Louisville played in the NCAA Championship game where, at halftime I was given a 100 dollar bill, and Jim played a solo gig on the same night in a farmhouse in Nevada, I'd rather see Jim anytime.  But not everybody feels that way.  And they suck.   >:(

I just thought it was odd because that's definitely not the take I got at the Waterfront show last year; the vibe I got was that the townspeople were really aware of and proud of the band.  But maybe I wasn't in town long enough to get a real feel for it?

Anyway, just curious to get a local's perspective.  Thanks for the feedback!

QuoteAll the good vibes emanating from Louisville!

my 2¢......

as embarrasing as it is to admit, this 46 year old lifelong louisvillian didn't have a freakin' clue about MMJ until march 2008.  yes, i'd heard the name around town for years but for reasons i still cannot fathom i just wouldn't give them so much as a brief listen.  i suppose there was a part of me that figured, "just another local band, can't be anything special."  lord was i ever wrong. and stupid. :-[

the hype for evil urges had begun that spring.  my curiosity had grown.  decided to check them out.  my first real exposure to MMJ was you-tube, watching OBH on the conan show.  as i told my buddy that day, "hmmmmm, these guys seem to rock."  i had a best buy gift card left over from x-mas and used it to buy Z.  mind blown. :o

but it wasn't until i bought the first 3 albums that i began to fully understand what i'd been missing out on.  it's hard to describe the feeling, but it's clear jim is at least partially influenced by many of my favorite old artists.  (the who, for one.  how 'bout that "WGFA" during the intermission?)  it's like taking all the stuff you've listened to and loved for decades and rolling it up into one nice, tidy package.  fresh and exciting, but also comfortably familiar. the jacket.

and it doesn't hurt that they are absolute MONSTERS live.

what was the point again?  oh yeah, i am also surprised the MOF show didn't sell out, especially since MMJ drew 10,000 to the waterfront last year.  i'm gonna chalk it up to unfamiliarity with MOF and too much competition that night.....halloween parties, college football, roger daltry (i would have loved to have seen him), and miley cyrus.

well, maybe not so much miley cyrus.

and there are probably still some doofuses out there like i once was, oblivious to it all.   one day they'll WISH they had been there, if they had only known..... :'(

I appreciate your reason to my rant, moe.  I shouldn't have gone off like I did, but it's aggrevating to think people refuse to listen.  But maybe they're still waiting for that perfect mix tape or perfect Conan performance to turn them on.

Good catch. I remember using the rest room right before this came on. I think it was after We Are Nowhere and before Golden...but I could be wrong.

I think you're right. I'm pretty sure it was earlier in the show than At the Bottom of Everything.

Ah- validation!
I was careful to make my point but fully confident I was making a valid one. My opinion was based on the numerous conversations I had with locals over the course of the weekend, and I felt it was pretty well formed, based on what I learned from talking w/ peeps.

One more note on my time in Louisville: I went up to Ear-X-Tacy on Sunday and picked up a sweet 180g blue/white "tye-dye" vinyl copy of "Chocolate & Ice". Also grabbed a t-shirt. Pretty happy with the record, side 2 is just "Cobra", and I really dig it.
Hope to see you guys out West sometime! I think I might put together a little mini-run of like 4-5 shows the next time MMJ tours.
You guys absolutely MUST catch a show at Red Rocks!

I loved reading everyone's take on the night. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad everyone seemed to be pleased with the afterparty.  If any of you will be in town the Saturday before Thanksgiving, we will be playing Bearno's again that night.

regarding the Jacket's relationship to da ville: I've been seeing this band since the beginning and let me tell you, that are not many people in this town who can say that.  The first show I went to was maybe 30 people and over half of them were family members of the band.  That did not change for a LONG time. Even when they had national and international press and were starting to get "famous" they could not sell out anything in Louisville.  It wasn't until they got signed to a major label, four years later, that I remember a sold out crowd and yes they brought it back then, too.  Nowadays, you have a bunch of young kids just looking to get drunk and a bunch of fairweather fans hoping they play their favorite song (whatever that might be).  I miss the old days, but I guess it pays the bills.

Now that they have proven themselves to the world and don't need louisville's blessing (not that they ever did) the city likes to claim them but not so much support them.  On top of that, there are a lot of jealous times, like Lovedogg was explaining, who like to dog them and pretend like they don't deserve the success they have.  It's a shame, but it's the truth. Some of my favorite musicians in this city will dog out Jim but then brag about their connections to the band on their bios.  From the beginning Jim didn't seem too concerned with pleasing Louisvillians and good for him.  He certainly did have the masterplan. The waterfront show was a celebration of Louisville but it was Jim patting our city on the back, being the bigger man.  Again, good for Jim.

Markus, I saw MMJ open for Bob Dylan at Red Rocks and Telluride, it was a blast and I hope I get the chance to make that run of shows with the band again.

I, for one, could give two shits about anyone from Louisville that doesn't care about MMJ, or our local celebs.  I work at an office that has four tix in a primo spot at the Palace.  I have received plenty of tickets to great shows (i.e. OCMS, Ryan Adams, Kings of LEon, etc.).  The great thing is that the bands most of us love fly under the radar, and that is why we love them.  IT gives me great seats, and I'm fine with that (I think Kory and dylan agree).

I would have like them to sell out the show, but people in Louisville don't listen to enough public radio (only place you hear MOF here), eat enough vegetables, or get active.

We have the highest obesity rate around, and people love their pop music.  They need something simple to groove towhy they try to work on their Crackberries.

I don't want everyone to think Louisville blows.  for the good side, I have lived here my whole life.  Grew up in Hikes Point, and never crossed paths with Jim or Patrick, but knew almost everyone else from that school.

I love MMJ and MOF like no other, but I was a late bloomer.  I love their attitudes as much as their music, and I think that is the best part.  Jim and Patrick are as Louisville as it gets in my opinion(Think Patrick and his wife dressed up as H1N1 and Jim wearing skeletor boots for a year).  The Highlands and Frankfort Ave. areas are a prime example.  Our "Possibility City" is a melting pot of different people who can play six degrees of anyone in 1 step (If you're from Louisville you know this is true).

There are many people in this city that do love this band, and maybe, just maybe, many have children (remmeber it was Halloween and that is how I got extra tix).

We all keep doing are part to try and turn new people towards the Jacket (and now MOF), and that is all we can ask for.

- Enough has been said about the KISS incident. But I must repeat once more how amazing it was. IT WAS AMAZING.
- Matt was astounding. This show gives me reason to dive headfirst into his back catalogue. That solo on One Hundred Million Years was the coolest acoustic work I have seen in a long time.
- Temezcal's harmonies are gorgeous live. You can just hear it envelop the room.
- Conor's voice worked well on the faster songs, giving them some strength. He fit in perfectly on Smokin'. Maybe my only beef with the show was The Big Picture: it was too long, too slow, and poorly placed after two slow songs when a pick-me-up was needed.
- I like how Jim rarely took the mic alone. He could have done all of his songs alone and maybe have gotten an even bigger response, but he even gave Will a go at Bermuda Highway.
- All doubts about Wonderful (The Way I Feel) are gone. I'm seriously excited about what Jim might do with it in the studio.
- Hey, Rabbit!  ;D
- I got further confirmation that Golden deserves a place among the stars of the Jacket's catalogue (Steam Engine and Dondante)
- I never thought I'd get to hear I Will Be There When You Die in person, but I can die a happy man now.

I can die a happy man, 'cause I did the best that I could do.

Hey Dark! It was great to meet you and thanks for your summary of the evening.  I, too, was unaware of Matt's guitar skills... It was definitely a special night!

Truly amazing.  All I can say.  I am envisioning being at a festival around midday under a tree, completely wasted and listening to that in the backgrounf thinking who is that f%&cking genius?  That would be a great time!

QuoteHope to meet u sometime too!
If MMJ does Red Rocks next year, you guys really need to come out to Denver.

Dig it! I've been looking for a reason to go to Colorado. ;)

Yeah! Red Rocks is the most magical, breathtaking, hallowed music venue in the entire world. Its amazing, and Denver is such a great city! I have my fingers double crossed for a Jacket show next summer!

I'd love to see them play Red Rocks again!!   :D

(Actually it's the only venue I've ever seen them play at.)

I'd be down for a Red Rocks adventure. It is a magical land. It was everything I expected and more.
