Title: B'ham Pre-show Get Together
Post by: shananana on Feb 14, 2010, 12:30 PM
Ok so I know we got, what, 2 months or better til this shizzy goes down, but I'm a cancer and a natural planner and I'm just wondering what B'ham peeps' thoughts are on a pre-show get-together location.  I don't live in B'ham (live in Montevallo, actually), and I don't make it to the ham as much as I used to, and I know my favorite spots for good beers (J.Clyde - what a selection - Daves - again, the selection - I'm a beer snob), etc., but I don't think that either of those are feasible/within walking distance of the AL theater.  Soooo do any of you that are more familiar with the downtown watering holes have a good idea of a locale for the pre-show get together?

I love this idea!  I'll be there with a friend from Northport, and definitely down for some beer snobbery   ;D

At the risk of sounding kind of Pollyanna, would anyone be interested in organizing something charitable for the evening?  Maybe gathering up some canned goods, or raffling off some Jacket goodies?  I feel really thankful for all the joy this band brings to my life, so I want to try to give back a little if I can.

What a noble idea ALady!  I love your thinking and I'm totally interested.  I've never organized such an affair so am not quite sure how to get started... but am definitely down to help out as much as possible.  Maybe something for Haiti... or maybe some music-related charity something-or-other?

Maybe we could even work with a pre-show venue to see if they'd be willing to help our efforts?

Next time I'm in the 'Ham I will ride by the AL Theater and see what's close by (for watering hole type action).  Anyone else that already knows or beats me to the punch, please let us know your suggestions!

Hey ladies...I think this is a great idea! Doing something for Haiti or a local charity would be great. Best of luck in organizing this. Perhaps it will encourage others along the tour to do the same. Kudos to you!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

All,
This is my first post here. I am from AL. Been to many shows at the AL Theatre. It'll be awesome to see MMJ there.
As with shananana, I am a beer snob as well & J. Clyde is probably the best beer bar in Bham area. Laid back atmostphere with decent food. But definitely not within walking distance.
Off the top of my head, Speakeasy is probably the closest bar to the Theatre, but really and truly J. Clyde is where it's at haha.
On a side note, downtown Bham is not the best place to be walking anywhere. If you do chose to do so, walk with a buddy for sure. Not trying to scare anyone, but after hours walking in downtown is not preferable. Take a cab.
Just my $0.02

Also for folks interested in good brews, Good People Brewing Company is a local Bham brewery that just fired up recently (I wanna say withing the past 2-3 yrs, don't hold me to it though haha). They have awesome beers! J. Clyde and some other places in town should definitely have some on tap. Support your local breweries  8-)

Word to that on the Good People Brewery!  And they have a pretty decent brown ale... esp. for AL's first hometown brewery (or at least I think it is...)

J. Clyde is DEFINITELY one of my fave places to drink... I have a Honda Pilot which seats 8... depending on how many people are interested we may can do a carpool type sitch to the venue... logistics would have to be worked out later... and I'd have to limit my beer intake (or, my boyfriend would, as he is employed and would have to work the next day, tee hee)... but I'll consider it.  I'll also see what our options would be for like a minivan-type cab... if split between several folks that might not be too expensive.  We shall see.

Welcome to the board, btw, and yay for a fellow bham MMJ fan!

Shananana and ALady -

I think this is a great idea.  I know the Exec Director of the AL Theater (so I could talk to him), and I attend a church 2 blocks from the Theater.  We are currently collecting "health kit" items for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) to go to Haiti.  These items include:
1 hand towel (15" x 25" up to 17" x 27", No kitchen towels)
1 washcloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, No child-size brushes)
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
$1.00 to purchase toothpaste

We collect the items and put them in gallon size zip locks.  This could be one option...collect at the venue (or at the pre-party) and donate the items to the church from "Fans of MMJ."  I could retrieve the boxes of stuff and take to the church the day after.

Now, the only problem would be getting the word out.  I'm sure we could get the AL Theater and Speakeasy (the bar that's a block from the Theater) on board to do fliers, but if people don't know to bring these items, they're likely not going to have an extra bandaid, finger nail clippers, or toothbrush on them.

Ideas?

And, I would absolutely recommend Speakeasy as a pre-party.  It's close and they have a decent beer selection.

We could also collect money...with checks made out to UMCOR.  By the way, 100% of all donations to UMCOR go directly to Haiti.  They are able to pay administrative fees by doing seperate fundraisers throughout the year.  Here's the site:

Thoughts?

I'm due into B'ham around noon.  Once I get my car and hotel settled, probably around 2pm, I'll be available to help in any way I can.  Keep me in the loop.  I'm digging this idea.

If we're certain of an idea, I can hit up my students for $$$ to contribute to the cause.  They'll probably assume I'll use it to party (anyone see The Hangover?).

It sounds like lots of folks are interested.  I think it would be easier (or less complicated) if we could set-up a booth at the Theater (next to the merchandise booth) and collect money...and supplies if people bring them.  But, I'm still not sure how to get the word out about supplies.

I think I could round up a few folks to "work" the booth (who are not currently going to the show).  This is what I'll do:

1.  Email MMJ Management and tell them our ideas.  Hopefully, we'll get some feedback/direction from them.  If they have a certain charity they want us to support...excellent.  If not, I suggest Haiti Relief via UMCOR.

2.  Contact AL Theater's Director (I can do this tomorrow) to find out what it will take to make this happen.  They may only need an "ok" from MMJ, but I'll know more soon.

I think support from MMJ is crucial to making this a success.  Also, I think people would be more inclined to write checks rather than haul in supplies, but we could collect both.

Please continue to provide any ideas...

Excellent, smit   :)  I'm guessing they may already have certain charities they want to work with, maybe something local.  They've had folks set up booths at other shows (I remember in Chicago '08 there was a no-Olympics booth).  Also, folks may prefer to donate to a non-denominational organization, so that might be something to keep in mind as well.

The grub there is not half bad, and they use some local/organic/clean-meat ingredients (which is rightu p my alley)... food can get a little pricey, as can too many beers, but this IS a special occasion, soooo do it up :)

I will probably grab some food and a beer or two at j.clyde as well, and then hit up the speakeasy afterwards, if that's where our official pre-party/charitable effort is to take place.

Woot woot, can't wait! 8-)

Hey 'Bama Gang!  If we can settle on some pub/grille venue for preshow and make some committments, maybe we could arrange a deal regarding food/beverage per person, particularly if attached to participation (time and/or money) in our charitable efforts.  Just a thought.

Okay, here's an idea.

I am feeling both shame  :-[ and joy  :D because I upgraded my 23rd row aisle seat for 4th row right orchestra via eBay.  I didn't think I was dealing with a scalper, per se, and was looking at face value with less than 3 minutes to go, but the final price ended at around double face value (I didn't want to lose them).  I have bitched about scalpers and fear I fell for the temptation.

My first and only show was in Boston in 08 and I was way the fuck back.  As you know, I've got a big 3-show trip planned for April and really hoped to score good seats.  I'm pretty happy with my tickets for Nashville and Atlanta, but had hoped to score at least one show up close.

My proposal is to offer the second of the two 4th row right orchestra (right in front of Jim!) tickets in a raffle as part of our charitable efforts.  Someone can spend a few bucks for a chance to upgrade their ticket and the money goes towards our cause.  The only downside is that the winner gets stuck next to me. :)

What do you think?

P.S.  Looks like I've got a Row W center orchestra aisle seat available, face value.  Email me if you're interested.

I think it's a great idea, but we should check the Alabama laws on running games of chance; we may need a permit to do a raffle (sorry to be a bummer, but I've been doing a little research in advance of the MPP tailgate).  It may be easier to do as an auction, though we may run into similar issues.

I wonder if it might be wise to pair up with an existing Birmingham nonprofit, and donate the ticket to them to auction or raffle as they please?

Sorry, I found the link when searching Alabama law.  I didn't have time to fully explore, so I thought others might be able to.  Thanks.  Sounds like you know what's up.  Let me know if you think my ticket idea is more trouble than its worth.  If so, I could still post it and apply the $$$ to charity on my own.

This is copied from another thread.  I decided to put the 4th row ticket up for auction on eBay, with 100% of the final price going to the American Red Cross.  The original posting is below, with links to a seating chart and the eBay listing.  Thanks for your ideas and feedback.

Check out a 4th row ticket available, with all proceeds to the American Red Cross!

I was bummed when I pulled Row W for this, my second MMJ show.  It is an aisle seat and in an intimate venue. Still, I wanted something special.  My first show had me way the fuck back.  So I scored a pair of 4th row seats, in front of Yim (assuming he still favors that side of the stage).

Check out this seating chart.

I hope someone from this forum ends up standing next to me having the time of their life.  Every penny from the winning bid goes to the American Red Cross.

Please do!  Only about an hour to go and no bids!  8 people watching it, and I'm one of 'em.

If you've never watched an eBay auction wind down, this one could be kinda wild.  In the last minutes, you wait to see who has the balls, and presumably the money, to raise the bid.  I was in quite the battle for these tickets orignally.  Had them to myself with a bid around $60.  Then, with about 3 minutes left, someone started a bidding war with me.  I finally outbid him/her in the last 5-10 seconds, for $260.  Once I saw them posted, I had to have those tickets.  It doesn't matter to me how much they go for tonight, financially.  I'm not getting any of it, so its more to see how much the ARC will get.

Yeah, I have no choice but to be travellin down South solo.  I'm wondering if a group sitting further back might want to get this ticket and take turns heading up closer.  Not that I want musical chairs going down next to me all night.

Ticket didn't sell, so its relisted, slightly more enticing, and will stay listed until sold, or else I'll bring it with me and see what happens.  Here's the listing:  http://cgi.ebay.com/My-Morning-Jacket-Ticket-4th-Row-Free-Shipping_W0QQitemZ190383327214QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Tickets_all_in_one?hash=item2c53bb07ee

So, as already mentioned in 2 other, related threads, the 4th row seat earned a paltry $81 for the American Red Cross.  I just hope the winning bidder is a good neighbor to me at the show.

Any new ideas regarding preshow in Birmingham?  Just as my idea to use my extra ticket for charity fell short of expectations, I can understand if our ideas regarding charity events in Birmingham are not coming together.  Lots of good people and good will, but coming into B'ham from all over might be hard to coordinate.

Is there going to be a primary site for preshow?  Plans for a food/can drive or other charitable component?

(If MMJ ever comes to NH, I'll take the lead.  The Capitol Theater in Concord is a nice small venue.  The Verizon Wireless Arena is a bit bigger.  C'mon boys.  You know you need your granite fix.)

Okay, I've decided to commit to a plan of sorts and hope to run into as many of you as possible.

I land in B'ham at noon, rent a car, and check into my room at the Medical Center Inn.  I may head to J. Clydes in the mid afternoon (2-3pm).  I will definitely be at Speakeasy around 5pm.  The show is at 8:00.  My real name is John (no way!) and my cell number is 603-568-6123.

I am bringing at least one, maybe both omnichords with me on this trip and might drag 'em along to the bars if folks want to play with 'em.  I need, however, a suggestion as to where I might stash 'em right before the show.  Does anyone know people working at Speakeasy?  Maybe they'd let me leave my gig bag behind the bar or in a back room until after the show.

Remember, I am not a musician, so don't expect me to perform.  I'll play along but still refer to post-it notes with the chords on 'em.  Might be fun if some folks show with guitars.  If the weather's nice, we coud go outside and jam!  I've never played with another person or instrument.

Anyway, can't wait for next week!

Thanks LDsquared!  I might be meeting some forum folks from the area before heading to Speakeasy, but I'll bring my 'chords along and plan to be a Speakeasy by 4 or 5.  Call my cell once you're settled if you like: 603-568-6123 or I'll see you there.

My students and half the high school know about Mr. Y's big plans for April vacation.  They are totally impressed with my trip and quite jealous.  I have created a few MMJ fans out of my students, mostly freshmen.  They would tell you next week is all Mr. Y has talked about since February!  Less than one week to go!

Super-stoked about the pre-show get-together(s) and would love to join (it's crucial to get in the right mind-set for a show from the greatest band of our generation).  I'll be flying solo for the B'ham show, but meeting up with a good friend for the ATL show...

So is everyone meeting at J. Clyde's at 2-3, then the speakeasy at 4-5?

Let me know....thanks.

Welcome everyone coming from out-of-town!  If you've never been to the Alabama, you are in for a treat.  Has there been any discussion of the after party?

I'm down for whatever, Duder.  4/20 with My Morning Jacket should be celebrated properly.

I'm sure Speakeasy will be slammed, but I will probably run by there.  I might suggest The Garage for any adventurous out of towners.  Use GPS or a cab though:  2304 10th Terrace S, Birmingham, AL 35205-2408.  I saw John Stirrat there after a Wilco show once.
