Hey folks,
Well, here I be in B'ham! My hotel's wireless SUCKS so I'll be depending on my cell. At 42, I'm not to quick on the draw, but will chime in from time to time on a Twitter account I set up last night:
johnnYYacMMJfan
When I set it up, someone else already had the username johnnYYac! WTF! Who could it be? A long lost brother?
The sun is shining, its warm, getting ready to break out the first of my 3 custom t-shirts, one for each show.
Got stopped by security at the airport in Manchester, after going through the checkpoint. They didn't like the look of my Omnichord gig bag and had to see (and hear) for themselves that it wasn't a weapon of mass destruction (though my playing ability might qualify).
Okay, can't be tied to this here laptop in the hotel lobby. Need to gear up to head out and rock on! Peace!

"stay tuned for MMJ opener"
"PHJB was great. Jim played w/them for 2 tunes Louisiana Fairytale and?"
"after opener this tweet is closed for the night" (lol)
wait for it..wait for it...
any guesses for opener?
I'm thinking something heavy hitting. maybe One Big Holiday or Something Random not sure what to expect.
They should open with Dancefloors + horns. That'd be ridiculous.
QuoteThey should open with Dancefloors + horns. That'd be ridiculous.

The Vulcan (for those unfamiliar with B-Ham) is a statue that overlooks the city that was built for the World's Fair that came here. Jim gave a short speech about how the band watched the sunrise this morning after going to the statue. He claimed it was one of the Wonders of The World in the likes of the Taj Mahal...hahaha it was a unforgettable night!!
P.S. For those of you on tour, or going to be on tour, get the posters!!! They're 25 bucks and worth every penny.
Highly Suspicious with horns.Wow.
After hearing HS live at Waterfront Park in 08,this sounds promising.I think I just peed my pants a little. :-[
Sigh.
They're back y'all.
I am impressed with the custom T-Shirt thing...keep it Rockin' old man!
Thanks for the tweets Johnny!! Glad you met YY. What was that like?
My friend Chris down in Alabama said he met you and lowdownluvdog last night, too! Sweet!! Small world. Other than Meg and Brad, I don't know a single soul down in Alabama other than him.
yes, capt--sorry it was confusing, i was relaying the tweets!

WAKE UP JOHNNY! We need a report. Get out of bed, shake off the groginess, and get ready to to it again!
Was GREAT meeting ya last night, Johnny! Know we both got our socks rocked off!
Hope to run into ya in Nashville tonight. Studying all day for my exam, driving to Knoxville after the show to ball out and ACE it! Should be another EPIC night!

Ryan,

I remember you. Safe travels.
Where to begin?
Thanks to everyone for checking out my Twitter posts. Fat thumbs and beers, plus 42 year old eyes, make it slow going on the ole cell.
My review for last night, Birmingham, is short. It was awesome. They were full of surprises and were rockin loud and hard! A Who-esque/Baba O'Reilly-like intro to OBH had everyone guessing. An extended hard guitar Jim-jam over Snowy's sax during Dondante was extended orgasm. Yim was full of energy and just smiled up at us all night.
Got to shake hands with the PHJB clarinetist and thank him for a great opening, then asked if we'd see him later during the MMJ set. "Hell, yeah, sir." he said. Cute old guy. They had a hard time keeping up with the Jacket during EU, farting around with sheet music then catching up.
And Tommy, the madman, leaping up and, possibly, telling the boys to head into the midpoint of Run Thru. Visiting songs midway is very Grateful Dead. Maybe we'll get the first part tonight. Hell, might as well do the whole thing!
I told folks about listening to Anytime on the plane and finding some lyrics appropriate to the evening-
"I HOPE WE DIDN'T WAIT TOO LONG.
ALL THAT I WANTED TO SAY – WORDS ONLY GOT IN THE WAY.
BUT THEN I FOUND ANOTHER WAY TO COMMUNICATE.
IS THIS "CLIMBING UP TO THE MOON?"
OR IS IT FADIN OUT TOO SOON??
I KNOW WE DIDN'T, I KNOW WE DIDN'T WAIT TOO LONG -
CAUSE ANYTIME'S A GOOD TIME TO MOVE ON."
Maybe if felt too long, but absence makes the heart grow fonder. Welcome back!
They're shaking off a bit of dust and the sound wasn't always 100%, but fantastic all around.
And my fellow forum fans, plus others I've met so far, have been extremely friendly and helpful. Thanks to Seth (scosby2) and his girl, Bailey, for inviting me to his home preshow and making me feel right at home. Kurt, you low down luv dawg, I hope your head hurts at least as much as mine. Tom Bear, you talk too much. Meg, dressed all pretty. Beau, see you tonight.
I'm at the Saucer by 5pm, after I call in to the wife and kids. My girls are really worried Daddy won't come home. The Jacket took me away from them for 5 days, but I'm coming home and miss you terribly. Okay, time for a quick nap before heading out.

Fuck, Sticky! You nailed again! One Big Holiday after a very Who-esque intro, kinda Baba O'Reilly or Eminence Front.
Help! I've got Sticky reading my mind.

They did a better job of it tonight (Nashville). More intense horns, though they struggle to keep up with Jim!

Well, I had this long post from last night, but I fell asleep (some might say, "passed out") and lost what I wrote.
Last night was virtually identical to Bham but for some key differences that made it an amazing night.
1. PHJB was tighter, played maybe one tune they didn't do in Bham (I could be wrong. I'm memory challenged this week and spent much of their set trying to meet Dylan).
2. "Carried Away" with Carl singing lead! I was so pleased. And great solo guitar work by Carl as well. I remember thinking he is underappreciated. I dig his solo work and wondered if he'd get a chance to borrow the spotlight from Jim. He deserves it. (question- is this a new MMJ tune or a Carl solo "cover" by MMJ? I remember thinking of suggesting they cover some of Carl's music in previous threads)
3. Wonderful (The Way I Feel). A staple of Yim solo and with Monsters of Folk shows, last night W(TWIF) got the MMJ treatment, a la Librarian. It was nearly pure Yim with slow, building accompanyment by the rest of the band. I wondered if W(TWIF) will end up on Yim's anticipated solo album or as part of MMJ. Perhaps both!
4. GA. Being part of the swell of humanity pressed against each other like some orgy except for the beer bottles on the floor. I got to nearly the same place w/respect to the stage as I was in Bham, stage right.
I moved out of the crowd during Dondante and finished the show in the nearly-empty upper level, straight back behind and above the sound board. A different perspective, quiet and empty, but I needed to sit. I walked 1.5 miles from hotel to Flying Saucer to the show. After the show, I walked about 2 miles, so my feet are sore. Money saved on cab will buy me a beer or two tonight.
5. Forum members. Preshow and during, I got to match more faces to their forum personas. CrispYY, flyguy, goose, Tracy3000, ALady, aMillionDreams, peafunk31 and his wife, Low Down, and others I may have forgotten (sorry). From Bham, a ton of folks (some not forum members) who's familiar faces made me feel at home.
Thanks especially to Dylan for making the effort to find me. I learned he and I share the same profession- teacher- and met lots of other good folks with him.
I am admittedly dissappointed that it appears MMJ is following a standard setlist with few changes. Following them for these first three shows, I was hoping to hear a broad spectrum of their catalog. My wish list is long and not many of those tunes can be checked off. I'm not trying to sound negative, but this trip is epic and I had expected maybe 50% carryover from one show to the next. Still, EVERYTHING else about the shows, the people, the places, the hangovers, have been worth every minute and every penny. See you in Atlanta!

Sounds like you had an incredible time Johnny!! :)
But I wouldn't expect anything less at an MMJ show.
