I'm trying my hand at an iron-on transfer. I'm hoping to make one shirt for each of the three shows next month. My first design...

That's a pretty sweet picture :o
It would also make a pretty cool jackolantern!
damn, how many shirt designs are you making johnnY? these two are very cool as well.
maybe it's cuz i'm not going to any of these 3 shows but... my favorite of your designs is on another thread. the one w/ the multi-color outlines of jim's face. that kicks all kinds of ass.
keep up the awesome work!

Thanks, though the other design(s) of which you speak are those of the great AMightyCaporal. I did very little to someone else's work, so I won't be making but the one shirt for myself. I'm trying iron-on transfers through my inkjet printer. I've got 5 transfers and 4 brand new black tshirts. Wish me luck. I just printed the "I feel everything" picture; it came out okay. The real test is getting it on the shirt.

oh shit! that's right, sorry. i'm terrible with names :-[
both are really cool. that american dad episode is epic, love that you're doing this decal. and that pic of jim - it's perfect. i'm sure both are gonna turn out great & there will be many jealous folks out there.
good luck!
The transfer paper usually works pretty well, just follow the directions they give you. Don't expect the shirt to last very long though, the image will start to fade and crack pretty much after the first wash. Still, its fun to make shirts for a specific event like this.. I made one for st.patty's day a few years ago.
I received a lot of compliments for the shirts I made for my three show tour last week. I told folks I'd post the images and a how-to so folks can make their own shirts. First, here are the final images used for the shirts.

As far as I how I made the shirts, the images were mostly from a Bing images search for My Morning Jacket, except for the butterfly pipe and the American Dad image for the front of the Birmingham shirt. That image came from me pausing the episode on my computer and doing a Print Screen, then paste to MS Paint. I used MS Paint for adding all of the text, which was a bit of a bitch; each time I was happy with my text and clicked to move on, the formatting went awry.
The t-shirts were all black Anvil pre-shrunk cotton T's from Amazon.com ($36.57 for 4 size XXL) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000G9I6M4/ref=oss_product
The iron-on transfers, printed using a basic HP inkjet printer, were Avery Dark Fabric Trasfers from Amazon.com ($24.00 for 2 pkgs. or 10 transfer sheets)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000C0CIR/ref=oss_product
Once I created images, using MS Paint and images found online, I printed each one on the 8.5 x 11 transfer sheet. I simply followed directions for the transfers exactly. Since I was putting a transfer on both the front and back of the shirts, I placed a marble block between to prevent the ironing of one side damaging the other transfer.
I hope you all have fun making your own. I mentioned to many on tour that perhaps we should have t-shirt design challenges/contests for future shows. Let me know what you think.

Looking good! I made this one a while back:

And a few more, but I'm too tired to find the folder I put them in, maybe tomorrow :)
^^^ ;D that's awesome Sara.

Glad you like it! I might share some more I've made then and even make some more perhaps :)

Thanks, glad you like them, or well, it's just one really, with different background color :)
Yeah, Sara, these are great! Do I have your permission to use it for a shirt I'll wear when I see MMJ open for Tom Petty in August? I don't make shirts to sell, just one for myself. If you want me to add a credit somewhere on the bottom, what should I put?

Of course you have my permission, print as many as you like, as long as you don't make anyone pay for it (and as long as it doesn't upset MMJ or anyone related to MMJ, I don't know how these things work really). I'm so happy you liked it. I wasn't planning on adding any credit, but now that you mention it, it would be nice with a tiny "SaraBananaBear - sharing is caring" ;) But it isn't necessary if you rather it didn't say anything. Do you want me to send it to you without any background color? :)

If you could send me your highest resolution versions as email attachments, I'd be much obliged. I like the brightness of the yellow background and would probably do a transfer onto a black cotton t-shirt. See my email below.
Tell me, Sara, do you have a copy of the Rockpalast DVD? If not, I could send you a copy as a way of saying "thanks." Otherwise, I have other goodies. Just give me a mailing address in that email.

Hm, I was reading AMC's thread about his YY t-shirt (http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1267712216/60#60) and now I'm a bit worried that MMJ might not be ok with printing it. :-/

Honestly, if its a press on design for somones personal use- I don't think they'll care. I was making a design to be distributed so thats why I contacted management. You should be alright!
Yeah, my attitude regarding my shirts has been, the images are borrowed, with some text added, but I'm only making one for myself, not selling them nor taking credit for the original images.
People at all three shows asked if I was selling the shirts and I explained that I would tell them how to make their own but would not sell them because I don't own the images.
Its kind of like copying music or a movie. Its not illegal unless you try to make money off it or present it as your own work. I'm no lawyer, but I would never have made and worn these shirts if I thought, for an instant, that MMJ would object.
That said, don't worry about your design, Sara, if you've any concerns. I'd love to hear how the design evolved. Where did the silouettes come from? What software did you use? etc...

As long as you come visit me in jail, I'll be happy. Maybe play me some MMJ music or bring a copy of Okonokos that I can play for the other interns. ;) I took existing photos (except the one of Patrick which is a screenshot from Okonokos) and hand painted the silouettes in photoshop (using some shortcuts here and there, not sure how to describe it really).
