If YY is doing folk festivals I hope he comes to Calgary www.calgaryfolkfest.com . Our folk fest is huge hear, 3 days/7 stages. the Decemberists headlined last year on saturday. Oh yeah and it is at an amazing venue...I'm starting to get overly excited for something that probably won't happen.

So to those who say this is an awesome lineup.... tell me more!

I definitely am going to Saturday's show.   Unfortunately I knew I had something on Sun 8/1 so I checked the schedule nervously but ... YY/JJ is on Saturday - whoo hoo!

But, I confess I don't recognize any other names on the list (my folk knowledge is pretty limited LOL) -  who else should I check out / listen to?

Here is Saturday
John Prine
Andrew Bird
Brandi Carlile
The Low Anthem
Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket
Doc Watson & David Holt
Calexico
Dawes
Nneka
O'Death
Liz Longley
Blitzen Trapper
A.A. Bondy
Sam Bush
Horsefeathers

Thanks!

I went a couple of years ago when Jim played and of the 30 MMJ shows and 4 Jim solo shows I have seen it is easily in the top 3. I live in Austin now and it isn't as easy for me to get to this but I am thinking I will fly out for it.

I believe there are threads on a number of these artists.

Well, Prine is an American legend

Andrew Bird is an incredible multi-instrumentalist who's recent solo work has been outstanding. (He has played with our beloved heros on a number of occasions).  I have yet to see him live however. :-[  Check out Noble Beast.http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1139388164/0#0
http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1232522904/0#0

Ya can't go wrong with Doc Watson, another American legend.

Dawes got a good write up in our local paper this week but I don't know much about them.  All I know is they are Cali Country
http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1256916701

AA Bondy and Blitzen Trapper are two of my favorite current artists.

http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1252997242

I confess that I was not a fan of Low Anthem when I saw them.  I'm not sure why because I like their music.  Oh well :-/

Can anyone give me some info on this festival? What is the atmosphere like? How long of a set should we expect from Yim? What will tickets cost?

So on and so forth.

I think we're gonna go if the tickets aren't disgustingly expensive. We'll probably save $$ by camping somewhere nearby though. If they are pricey, we'll only get a Sunday ticket and simply hope that YY is one of the special guests.

From facebook:

To the people asking about the festival. It is set in a beautiful state park in Newport, Rhode Island right on the water. In fact a lot of people drive boats up to listen to the music.

1 thing I will mention is that you can only buy alcohol and drink it in one location and from that location you can't really hear the music.

2 years ago Jim played the medium sized stage which was covered by a tent which was great because it poured down rain during his set. The set was recorded for NPR and is a must hear.

Still annoyed I decided to do Lolla instead of Newport that year.

It's a really nice festival. Lodging in Newport is pricey, but the ferry from downtown is a great way to get to the site. Driving can be a pain and parking was a bit of a nightmare last year. That said, the grounds are beautiful and manageable, you can bring in food, chairs, blankets, etc., and people are awfully nice about setting up close to them at the main stage. The other two stages are in very close walking distance, too.

It's really interesting how a bunch of the bands on here are related to Jim in some way: John Prine, Andrew Bird, Calexico, Levon Helm, Preservation Hall, Ben Solle & Daniel Martin Moore. . . it's almost like he curated it or something.

Yeah, looks like I can fly there for 280 round trip but three nights in a hotel would kill me.   Looks like camping is quite a ways away and hate to fly and and camp.  What a lineup though.  This would be an amazing trip.

I hope to be there, a family outing with my wife, Michele, and two of our daughters- Katherine, 8 and Maddie, 6.  Lauren's 2 so shel'll stay home with Grandma.

Don't have tickets yet, though.  I'm trying to warm my wife up to the idea after my three-show tour of the south and tickets for MMJ/Petty in August.  Tickets and parking at Newport for the four of us would be $200.  Not bad.

If we were closer, I'd open up my compound to campers, but I think you can do better than three hours away, driving time to Newport from our humble home in NH.

I hope the weather's nice.

saw jim there 2 yrs ago and it was remarkably easy to get front row center.  got to see jakob dylan, steve earle, she & him and jim and be dry while all others were wet.  my wife and i (just say him again at merriweather) just reserved a room at a b&b in town, yes pricey, and will see him again.  one of the best festivals around, easy to get a premium spot and a wonderful vibe and venue to boot.  not to be missed if you can afford it and get there.
last time jim played with both she and him as well as calexico and i expect there will be more cross-polinization.  hoping to catch him do prine's all the best

Ah, Chrissy fits right between Katherine and Maddie by age.  Well, if you go, we can hook up and mix kids.  See how they get along.

Looks like you're facing a 4 hour drive.  That's tough, especially with a 7 yr. old.  You might look at hotels in New London CT or thereabouts.  Good luck.

Yes, that's what we were thinking in terms of lodging - New London, or something else away from the shore where there are 2-3 night minimums at inflated prices.
Yes, I think it's like a 4-5 hour drive, but seems like it will be so worth it!  And if she comes with, we should definitely hook them up!  We brought her to All Points West with us last yr and she loved the  scene (and she loved the black keys and silversun pickups).  She would be psyched to see YY.   ;D ;D ;D  Just like Mama....scary

Cool.  I just found the Silversun Pickups a month or so ago.  Unfortunately, my girls have found Justin Bieber, though they do like the Dead, Floyd, White Stripes, and Monsters of Folk.  They don't like MMJ much, cause its "all that Daddy plays!"

Which would be the most convenient location? And how far are the cam grounds from Fort Adams?

I think I'll be booking this this weekend. Probably making a long weekend out of it, since its about a 6 hr drive from Philly. Staying in downtown Providence to save some $. Might only end up going to the Saturday shows. Looks like there's a lot of sights to see up there besides just the festival.

For those going I actually suggest staying in Providence. i lived there for 4 years and it is a great town with lots of great food. If you get the chance go to Alforno for the grilled pizza!! Plus the festival ends pretty early and you are more likely to find something going on in Providence at night than you are in Newport.

Time for a bump on this thread, the next of my Yim Yames experiences to come.

Just saw the "cubes"- who's performing when (see below)- and would like some feedback.  I'm doing NFF primarily for YY, then John Prine, and I'm only going Saturday.  Any suggestions on who else I should check out?

Right after JJ, right before John Prine. Their first (and only) album was recorded completely on analog tape. MMJ label-mates. Great harmonies.

Here's my tentative schedule (reposted from elsewhere).  Hope Saturday is helpful to you, YYac!  :)

Saturday:
Nneka (have been waiting to see since missing her at SXSW)
Bondy/Trappers (could go either way, will be seeing both in the next few months. Bondy will undoubtedly put on the better set but I do like to support my Trappers)
Brandi Carlile (have heard excellent things about her Roo set from several sources)
Calexico/Yim Yames (worst conflict ughhhh. Will be seeing Yim earlier in the week and lots this fall but...possibility of special guests and....just....ughhhhh. Haven't seen Calexico since November '08 :()
Dawes (have just been getting into, looking forward to finally checking out)
John Prine (have been wanting to see forevs)

Sunday:
Cory Chisel (have heard good things)
Punch Brothers (have just been getting into, looking forward to finally checking out)
Avetts/Preservation Hall (probably Avetts because they are AMAZING and I've seen PH a number of times this year already, but if Jim sits in...)
Richie Havens/Felice Brothers/Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore (think I gotta go Richie Havens? Haven't seen Felice Bros in a while, though they are always excellent.  Will be seeing Ben Sollee/Daniel Martin Moore earlier that week and have seen them both recently)
Justin Townes Earle (love, love love)
Levon Helm (words cannot express, haven't seen him since ACL last year, suspect the special guests will be off the hook)

That's too funny...my little girl would call them "Your Morning Jacket," because I was saying My Morning Jacket...I had to teach her how to say it.

I wish I could hit the NPFF...but I'm starting to run low on funds for concerts and I want to keep my options open for NYE...you never know if the bous will rock MSG again.

Kinda bummed to see only one hour for Yim.  I'll be in my car six times longer than he'll be on stage.  Hope for a stellar setlist.  Hmmmmmmmm.

At Dawn
Wonderful
Losin Yo Head
It Beats 4 U w/A. Bird whistle solo finish
Bermuda Highway
Anytime
Master's Voice
What A Wonderful Man
The Right Place
Smokin'
All the Best w/J. Prine

Already have more than an hour, lots of wishful thinking, and many more gems missing.  Plus, might be time to debut some new material for that solo album that's right around the corner.

So far, one vote each for Bird, Watson, and Dawes.  Hmmmmmmmmm.

Keep 'em coming.  I need a tie-breaker.

QuoteTime for a bump on this thread, the next of my Yim Yames experiences to come.

Just saw the "cubes"- who's performing when (see below)- and would like some feedback.  I'm doing NFF primarily for YY, then John Prine, and I'm only going Saturday.  Any suggestions on who else I should check out?

Go see Sarah Jarosz if you get there early enough..... she's really good.

Dunno if someone already posted, but here goes:

"NPR and folk music — it seems like a natural fit. On July 31, NPR Music will offer a live webcast of the Newport Folk Festival. In addition, NPR Music and WFUV New York, FolkAlley.com (WKSU) Kent, Ohio, and mvyradio in Martha's Vineyard and Newport will broadcast select sets from the Fest — air times are July 31 and August 1 from 11:30AM to 7:30PM (ET).

Fans can tune in to hear performances from The Avett Brothers, Andrew Bird, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Justin Townes Earle and more. They'll also be posting on-demand streams  from John Prine, My Morning Jacket's Yim Yames, Blitzen Trapper, The Low Anthem and Nneka at NPR.org/Music."
