Looking forward to meeting you at Newport.
I plan on staking my ground early so my seat is right up front. When I saw Jim at Newport in 2008 (which I am listening to right now at work) I got my seat right when the gates opened and was front row center all of 3 feet away from Jim ( and Steve Earle, Jacob Dylan & She & Him). One of the musical highlights of my life!

I'd like to do the same, but I'm with my 6 yo daughter and niece and my sister, so I won't necessarily be able to stay put for 4-5 hours. We'll have to see how it goes.

i think jim is playing under the tent again and not on the big main stage. if that is the case, you can probably put your stuff on the chairs and come and go as you need to. if near me, i'd be only too glad to keep an eye out for you and make sure people know "those seats are taken"
This will be my first time going... to the people who have been, I have a couple questions.
1. Are the parking passes that ticketmaster sells worth buying?
2. Can you recommend a good place to stay?
i like taking the ferry over from the main parking lots in town, much more fun and less of a hassle. ferry is about $8-10 per person round trip and very easy.
lots of good b&b's in town to stay at - much better (imo) than the big hotels. i'm staying at the Admiral Fitzroy. Most are really nice. Just try to avoid having a room facing the main streets as they get really noisy at all hours of the night
jot me down! I'll be coming with KC from Boston. The ferry sounds very cool but I don't know if I'm bed and breakfast material.

Sweet! Perhaps I can shake your hand for all the cool posts and photogs. How's Boston treating you?
Thanks for the kind words Johnny! It'll be great to meet some new faces as well! Boston is treating me well, just working on finding things... mostly beer and brewpubs!
I'll be there, coming from Brooklyn with my friend joining me from Nantucket. Hope to have a chance to meet you all!

C'mon, who's with us?
so- assuming you are all going to be at the harbor stage (most likely under a tent) no later than 3:00 on saturday (i expect to be there very early to be camping my happy butt in a seat close to the stage)- I hope I get to meet and greet some of you. gonna be an awesome time!
bummer the time conflict w calexico as jim played going to acapulco with them at the last newport folk fest.
i am we can expect to see jim play with john prine later sat at the main fort stage-- a nice "all the best" will make a nice encore of a day of jim. will be a very good day! :D ;D :D

This may seem insane, but I have this fantasy where Jim will sign my OM-84 Omnichord, so I'll have that with me in a black gig bag, making me fairly easy to spot. Also, my bald head reflects sunlight quite well, so follow the beam of light. I'm sure we'll hook up. On my own, I'd be camped out for front row. With my sister, neice, and my 6 yr old daughter, not sure how this will turn out.

Thanks, Kory. I'll look for ya. Probably don't need to bring my camera; no one can touch your skills.
I was going to make another custom T for this, but I've been to busy adding birthdays to the forum calendar, so I'll be sporting the one I made for Birmingham, with Yim from American Dad. Its shrunk a bit since April, and I've done the opposite, so look for the ill-fitting black T and, probably, my black autoharp gig bag (with omnichord inside).

Wow.
wow, what a day!
front row center for this amazing set list
great to meet you and hang today bluesky!!
i got me a smile that's gonna last a long time!
Back at the hotel reflecting on a great day at the Newport Folk Festival, of course highlighted by Yim's performances. He played alone for the first 2/3 or so of the show and was then joined by Sollee and Moore. I was surprised that he played His Master's Voice right out of the box sincet that was the closer on the MOF tour but I just love that song. The crowd was very respectful and quiet and it made me glad that he was at the Harbor Stage which is much more intimate than the sprawling lawn in front of the Fort stage.
At the end of the show he said he was going to join Sollee and Moore during their slot tomorrow at 3:30 although he was confused and thought it was earlier. So I get to see him again!
I also had the pleasure of meeting JonnyYYac at the end of the show when my wife flagged him down after seeing his American Dad T-shirt.
The final performance of the day was John Prine at the big Fort Stage. I went, in part, hoping to seem Yim join him at the end to sing the duet they did on Letterman a couple of months back. I thought it was a no-brainer give that Yim was there and also contributed to the tribute album. Prine did a nice show and it looked like he was wrapping things up arond 7:15 or so and I was starting to despair when all of a sudden he announces Yim is joining him on stage. I was about 100yds away but jumped up and cheered of course. Then, the highlight of the day happened. As soon as he announced Yim a huge charge went through the mellowed out crowd that was basking in the late day sun. People from all over started rushing the stage and, well, who was I to be denied, so my wife and I abandoned our chairs and cooler and joined the stampede to move much closer to the stage.
Prine and Yames played "All the Best" and then another with, I believe, George Wein, the organizer of the festival for all these years (I'm blanking on the song). What a great ending to a great day!
Now I have another set with Yim to look forward to tomorrow when he plays with Sollee and Moore and if he joins Levon Helm for the closer we'll have a Yim grand slam!
@GO4IT that was Jim Rooney, host of the festival

:D
I'm about halfway thru recording the stream. should have some mp3s up in an hour or two if somebody hasn't already done it it.
Sorry I'm late to report. Just got my wife back; she'd been away for a week. Nice to have her home.
Got to meet the great Kory J. and KC and the equally great GO4IT and his lovely wife.
I see some pics are posted. I took quite a few. I'll post some once I've gone through 'em. I'm sure Kory has some great ones, too.
I see the setlist. Twas awesome.
Almost missed Yim when they changed stages from the lineup I'd printed off the NFF website (grrrrrrrrrrr). This meant I was not close to the stage as planned. Sorry I missed you, headhunter and bluesky.
This made up for it, though. Me and Yim. My signed OM-84. Yim with my daughter Maddie and niece Regan. Afterward, Maddie gave Jim a huge hug, which he seemed to really appreciate. I refrained from doing the same.

What a weekend and great welcome to the Northeast! It was so great seeing a festival so far from home with 4 stellar KY artists!
Jim played with everyone we thought he would, Sollee and DMM, Prine, and the Preservation Jazz...
we were hoping to see the megaphone on St James Infirmary but the performance without was great!
It was great meeting up with Johnny and and his family... I'm so glad you got to meet Jim and get that Omnichord signed! I'm sure we'll get to hang out more and another show soon.
I'll get some photos up later but I got home last night and crashed and am now back to real life at work.
From the Boston Globe:
http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2010/08/02/a_variety_of_artists_add_to_the_legacy_of_newport_folk_fest/?page=2
In separate performances, singer-songwriters A.A. Bondy and Andrew Bird built distinct but similarly slow-burning sets that lingered well after they left the stage. My Morning Jacket's Jim James, performing as Yim Yames, was even more mercurial, somehow sounding both ethereal and embracing in his reverb-drenched set.
When James made a cameo in John Prine's headlining slot for duets of "All the Best'' and "Paradise,'' it clearly wasn't just homage. The gap between Newport's past and its future was officially, and beautifully, bridged.
Like lived-in houses, Prine's poignant songs — delivered in his world-weary husk of a voice — were familiar and comforting, a soundtrack to the sun setting over Narragansett Bay.
It became obvious yesterday that James was the linchpin of this year's festival. Like a parlor game of "Where's Waldo?,'' you never knew where he'd pop up, but it turns out James was connected to various artists through previous collaborations. One minute he was adding a yodel to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band's rollicking set and a half-hour later he was singing high-lonesome harmonies with Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore.
WOW John! Those are some great pics! Not only getting to meet Jim and have your photo taken with him, but you got your Omnichord signed as well??? :)
How did your family enjoy the show? I would love to get my girls to a show but they are still a bit young.
Looks like you all had a pretty epic weekend at Newport! 8-)

Epic for me, yes! For the kids, not so much. My niece, Regan (dark hair), didn't seem into the music and wanted to play with her cousin. Maddie, my blue-eyed blonde tornado, left during Jim's set twice for the bathroom; thank goodness my sister was there to take her so I didn't miss anything.
After the photos, when Maddie rushed up and hugged Jim, I thought she was gonna knock him over. He was so pleased with her affection and it elicited "awww"s from the small crowd. She had trouble sitting still for the music, but she does like Yim and the Jacket, and rightfully regarded him as a special person. I didn't get a picture of the hug, but it will be forever burned into my memory.
Because they switched stage locations for many acts (without much notice), I'm a bit confused as to who I saw before Yim. I know I caught much or most of Sam Bush (blazing mandolin), Doc Watson (background music to my meeting with Jim), Andrew Bird, and all of John Prine. Prior to Yim, we realized we were at the wrong stage when we were expecting Sam Bush but they introduced O Death. That means the act before must have been AA Bondy, when we were expecting Blitzen Trapper.
Waiting for the bus back to our lot, for almost an hour (!), we were entertained by a great, funky marching band- What Cheer? Brigade. Then a cool little trio- ukelele, acordian, and jaw bone- David Wax Museum- who won a contest to play at Newport. I'm planning to check out their NPR recording sometime today (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128911328).
In between, I took out my Omnichord and did One Big Holiday, What a Wonderful Man, Tonight (I Want To Celebrate With You), and Touch Me Part 2. Didn't elicit much response, more confusion than recognition, but gave me something to do. The fact that I didn't sing was, perhaps, part of the problem, though if I had, I believe the crowd would have dispersed.
Less than three weeks to Essex Jct., VT. See some of you there!
Great pics and stories guys! Listened to the show yesterday thanks to Penny's textual prompting and was totally floored... :)
Sunday was a blast! I caught corey chisel, sharon jones & dk, the felice brothers, some of Edward Sharpe and the MZ and some of Swell Season. I caught 1/2 of the Avetts, then made it to the PHJB set and am sooooo happy i did. YY guested on 2 songs Blue Yodel and St. James Infirmary. performance was the highlight of the day aside from seeing Levon Helm. YY went bonkers on the vocals on St. James and danced like the devil/madman/god all whilst eating an apple (am I right? did anyone else see that?). My girlfriend took a great vid of this and i will post it when we get a chance to upload it.
Yes, indeed, Yim was munching on an apple while he was helping Preservation Hall finish out their set and, of course, we were wondering what that was all about since he was singing in between bites. He was pretty wild up there and everyone seemed to appreciate him breathing some more life into the show.
Yim didn't play at the end with Levon as I thought might happen but I did get to see him perform 4 times, nonetheless. I somehow failed to anticipate that he would join PHJB but came to my senses just in time to get over there.
It was really a wonderful 2 days of music and overall ambience. And, it's hard for me to argue with the Boston Globe which said "....James was the lynchpin of this year's festival."
Here's my video of Golden, cut short when my daughter asked me to pick her up. So, I put the camera down, picked her up, and she rested her head on my shoulder while we enjoyed the second half.
Enjoy.

Awesome, thanks Riny.
I got back last night still spinning from such a great weekend at Newport!!
It is such an easy going and amazingly beautiful setting. Here in Brooklyn going to a free concert or summer outdoor movie can be a pretty stressful crowd situation. I will definitely go back. I was so glad to sit behind Headhunter and his lovely wife for Jim's set, it was pure chance. (Great to meet you two!) I have had Sylvie in head ever since. Jim was so hot he was on FIRE!!!
Johnny sorry I didn't get to met you, I did see your daughter and her friend get their photo taken with Jim, and just thought to myself how sweet that was...Maureen (Reenie) and I were talking and we might have even commented on it.
Preservation Hall's show sent chills, when the tuba player introduced his mother and spoke of the history of the group I got teary eyed. Saint James Infirmary was amazing, the one with Jim and the following that the band closed with. I was happy to that Ben Sollie and Dan Martin Moore played the small stage. It was great to see them and Jim set up on their own and the show felt very intimate. Jim and Dan messed up on one of the songs and which made the whole set even sweeter :).
Lot's of great photos and videos already posted so I'll just try to fill in one I haven't seen posted yet - His Master's Voice. Didn't quite expect this right off the bat so I missed the first 1/4 or so......

Anyone up to cobbling these together with the NPR audio? Might be an interesting project.
QuoteI didnt think they played together but apparently stef scamardo (from Sirius Jam On) said they did. She is often wrong though.
She annoys the living shit out of me. Let me describe a Scamardo playlist:
Warren Haynes song
Allman Bros song f/ Warren
Tea Leaf Green
Warren & Friends song
Tea Leaf Green
One of 3 mule songs: 30 days in the hole, unring that bell, or maybe if we're lucky goin' out west. Lately though it's been a cover of a U2 song
Tea Leaf Green
Some band featuring Warren
Warren & Friends
Warren
Station ID/Hi Guys I Married Warren
Allman f/ Warren
etc

nope but you can have one for free!
Nice work, Kory. Beautiful as always.
I actually have a photo of you from Newport (sort of)...

I like to be on the other side of the camera... I probably subconsciously looked away!
kory thanks, would love a copy of that photo of jim and john.
would gladly pay a price. i took many at newport (was front row center for jim in the tent) but NONE look even half as nice as yours.
would look great in my music room!
Still wishing I could have been there!
Sylvie is so great. Does anyone know who performed the original?

OHHHHH Kory, all of your pics are great but this one up above is one of the baddest ones I've ever seen. Love it-- great job friend. Hope Boston is treating you well! :)
awesome photo korys. the others are great too. if we didn't know that jim was such a nice, good guy, this one definitely makes him look like a tough-guy.
thanks! we all know he's not a tough guy but love how the capture makes it look that way...
