"Yim Yames, singer-songwriter Daniel Martin Moore and genre-bending cellist and vocalist Ben Sollee will embark on a nine date Appalachian Voices tour in an effort to raise public awareness of the devastating practice of Mountaintop Removal coal mining throughout Appalachia. A portion of the proceeds from the tour will benefit Appalachian Voices, for which the tour was named, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal coal mining together with diverse environmental problems impacting the central and southern Appalachian Mountains.
Tickets for the shows will go on sale beginning Friday, May 21st.

I'm really tempted to do the 30th before Newport...
Looks like the 30th includes the PHJB!
Good eye, BH! :)
I will never refer to Jim as Yim.
I wish they announced that NYC show before I booked my trip to Newport!
Oh well.... I love New England.

I figured something like this was going to happen since I read DMM say him, JJ, and Ben Sollee were going to come out with an album about mountaintop removal awareness later this year...No word other than that that Ive seen about an album, but cool theyre touring.
Closest show to me is like 3.5 hours though, so I doubt I'll make the trek.
Has anyone found a link to where you can buy tickets though? I cant find anything. DearCompanion just shows the dates and it says tix go on sale friday
What about MMJ summer tour though :-/

And Fiddle -- no need to excuse the language! I may appear to be be "mature" but have been told that I have a mouth like a truck driver!

Probably. Music Hall of Williamsburg is not a very large place, ~600 capacity. However, since this isn't Passion Pit, MGMT, or Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it might not even sell out. Wouldn't risk it, though, get tix ASAP. :)

How did you get tickets already? I thought they went on sale tomorrow? I might be able to take one of those tickets off your hands if you want?
AMEX presale. I'm going to see if anyone joins me over the next couple months. I don't have too many worries. I'll be able to get at least 1 companion, and if I can't get anymore, I'm sure there are a couple good folks on here who would snatch them up.

actually jim james produced the album. he also does background vocals on some of the tracks. not sure if he plays any instruments on it or not, but either way, it's some pretty good music. i'll be going to the charlottesville show, got tickets yesterday. they are on presale now...or at least they were yesterday.
Yuuuuup. Guess it's good I didn't go presale cause I just nabbed row A tix. woooo hoooo!
Picked up 2nd row for Knoxville!
ah you suck roberthunter, I nabbed 3rd row in K-Town. got aisle seats though, so it could be worse.
On a related note: right now, if you go to pitchfork.com, and look at tours, they added a My Morning Jacket tour listing recently. It lists 7-23 @ Bijou as MMJ's only stop in July, no other Appalachian stops are listed. The date was already listed for Yim & Ben & Daniel. This is really trippin me out, I'm unable to confirm that MMJ is visiting Knoxville anywhere else. But hopes are high!
Either way, the Bijou is a beautiful venue for shows like this, can't wait!
No offense intended, but why have high hopes for an MMJ date when you are buying tickets for the 23rd so you already exactly what is at the Bijou on the 23rd?
Well, Mike, so far the show is officially billed as Yim Yames, Ben Sollee, & Daniel Martin. I haven't heard the album these three put out earlier this year - I actually downloaded it yesterday, and am about to start it up and check it out. But from what I gather of Ben and Daniel, and as this is billed as an "Appalachian Voices" tour, I get the feeling of a somewhat downtempo, more acoustic/folk type of show (I do not know if Yim is to perform solo, I'm sure all three will be together at some point).
Now on the other hand, I am pretty familiar with the MMJ catalog, and one of the only things I would like to see at the Bijou more than a Yim acoustic show would be MMJ rockin' their ****. I personally loved Evil Urges, as likewise the rest of their albums, and would really like to see a bunch of those songs performed live.
So, MMJ / Yim Yames, we'll see, but again I'm sure the show will be great either way! (and maybe Yim performs a bunch of MMJ songs live, I haven't had the chance to see him live yet, perhaps someone else will fill me in)
Got my ticket for Brooklyn! :D

I have only been a fan for two years, but what I have come to learn might help you...anything Jim James touches is fucking incredible. His music, in any of the many genres he does, is the best I have ever heard. I make this statement with 20 years of experience in going to musical events.

I hear ya. As the previous posters said, with Jim involved it will be awesome, but it won't be MMJ. I think the Bijou would literally melt away if MMJ tore it up in that venue. And I would be driving to Knoxville for sure then!

i ordered the cd yesterday & the clips i heard sound phenominal! very excited to get it & listen to the full tracks. the notes on itunes (which i don't know how they verify their info but...) were that jim contributed backing vocals & some guitar work in addition to producing the album. very cool that 100% of album sales go to the cause :)

- See, Mike here gets the difference. I always crack up at all the arguing over music I find on the internet (elsewhere, I'm new here today) because I realize that the music people like/dislike is mainly just a matter of personal preference, and background, etc. Personally, I like rock, and folk music, among other types, but I listen to a lot more of the former than the latter. If you scroll up to the top of the page to check out the band pic, that's some **** I would love to see right there. Of course Scotch always improves both, and I know this will be available. I would add though, that James' only output that has done anything less than utterly enthrall me was the "Tribute To" EP, which is the only music I am aware of published under the Yim Yames moniker. I know generally everything he does is going to be incredible, those songs just didn't "stick" with me like the rest, perhaps that is the source of my (slight) apprehension.
On that note I'm breaking now to finally check out Dear Companion - thanks for the input all, I would still love to hear from someone who has been to a Yim solo show, what it is like.
It's amazing and potentially life-altering. That's really all you need to know.
The Tribute To album was recorded some time ago, when Jim was maybe a little less polished. But you should never, ever miss a Jim solo show if you can help it.

Yeah, he seems to get a kick out of it. Also seems to enjoy making music with his friends, not always having to be the center of attention and whatnot. But of course, Jim can't help but draw attention.
caught your hint aMD & if i was in that area i'd have been there. you know things, lots & lots of things.....
it's great that you got to see 'em & especially in a small venue like that! sounds like it's gonna be a good run of shows & will be cool to see jim take a step back from the front-man role. i really enjoyed seeing him take turns with lead vocals & changing up instruments for MoF & he seemed to really enjoy it as well. and yeah - even when he doesn't try, he certainly does draw you in.

btw, I scored front in Lexington, see you all there!
I just checked out the youtube videos from this show. The audio was a little iffy but the video was great! Did I miss something? Were they posted in some other thread? Pretty darn cool. Really looking forward to this now.
Aww hell, in the event that they weren't...

No problemo amigo. >:( ;) [smiley=beer.gif] ;D ;D ;D
Decided Im going to stop in Charlottesville on the way up to New England a catch the show.
Car, cooler and bowl are packed and ready for a 5:30 departure from Louisville to Lexington. So ready for "The Mountain Men" to rock the opera house. Happy Trails :D
If some kind soul could make a mental note re: whether there are posters or not at these shows and report back, that would be most appreciated.

What New England show are you coming for?
Well, shoot. I haven't heard much chatter on here about the Charlottesville show so I guess no roll call thread is necessary.
HOWEVER, looks like I got a date with 'ole ctdeadhead. It'll be nice to meet a forum member for this show! :)

Im totally pumped for this show!!
Ruckus, I bullshitted with ctdeadhead for an hour in a bar across from Radio City Music Hall before that MMJ show and neither one of us realized we were who we were until several days later. Good times.

That's funny shit. Hopefully I'm at least half the bullshit artist that you are BH.

Half a pile of bullshit still stinks just as bad. ;)

There's a hand/screen printed tour poster on good stock. It's gorgeous & 25$. I am flat broke or would've snagged one.
I'm going to Charlottesville as well. My friend can't make it, and for about two seconds I considered not making the drive from DC solo. But I'd be crazy to miss the show.
I was at the Knoxville show. It was a lot of fun. Jim stole the show obviously, but it was a really good time.
they didn't have tubes for the poster. I was on the fence. At 20 dollars with the tube, I would have snagged one.

Thanks for the heads up. Now I need to find it (the curse of a completist collector)
If anyone who buys one could tell me the artist name, or could take a photo, that'd be most appreciated.
Did anyone who saw it see if it was unique to the night/venue, or is it one poster for the whole tour?
Well I took a pic but I've never added photos here and seems to be a pain. Can they be added from maybe facebook or do you have to use photobucket or whatever? If someone knows an easy way I'll toss it up - I'm on a mac

Hey, Jim. You inspired me to post instructions for posting images (see link below).
I hope its not too confusing. I have no idea if having a Mac will complicate matters.
I'd love to see those pics!

I spent all weekend contemplating whether the above statement is indeed accurate. After an informal poll amongst acquaintances, I have come no closer to a definitive answer. We'll leave that to ctdeadhead. ;D
Thanks, johnnYYac, those instructions were clear and using a Mac did not seem to complicate things at all. Here's some pics of the poster from an iphone camera :-/

Bottom pic is with a brown frame from Target. What you probably can't make out in the pics is: on the bottom-right it says "Poster designed and hand-printed from Madpixel.net" and they are hand-numbered w/ pencil out of 300 on the bottom left.
In preparations for the Brooklyn show...and just to listen to some new music...I finally purchased the Dear Companion CD. This is a wonderful album, and Sollee & Martin sound sweet. I must say that I am not surprised...I know JJ only rocks with the best...
I can't wait for the Brooklyn show..."I can't wait to hold your little hand..."
IIIIII can't wait to HOLD YOUUUUUURRRRRRRRRR
little hand.

Thanks Jim Turner - very helpful.... exactly what I needed.
Psyched that it's MadPixel - their Monsters of Folk poster is one of my favorites....

Do the dates on the poster include Newport?

I had not forgotton you Yakster. I just wanted to wait until my poster arrived, which it did yesterday, so I could look at it in person.
Yes, the dates include Newport. In the top right under Appalachian Voices, it says July 22 - Aug 1; then, lists 8 places, the last of which is Newport RI (if you look at the pic above you can almost make it out)
thus, if you are asking because you want posters from shows you've been to, this would definitely serve as a Newport poster.

Thanks for your timely response ;)
I think I'd prefer an actual Newport Folk Fest poster, so I'll go looking. I didn't catch the DMM/BS set on Sunday, so the App Voices poster doesn't quite match my experience. Maybe I need to make my own poster!
