You can't help but feel the sadness dripping from JohnnYYac's post about how he can't make the NYC shows - and, the observation with 14 threads that this is all anyone is talking about.
So, in order to have something else for him to discuss, and because he mentioned he's getting psyched for Petty, here's a question - what setlist would you compose if you were MMJ, 45 - 60 mins available to blow the minds and invite further exploration from what's likely to be a largely unknowledgable crowd????
Here's my stab:
1. OBH with new opening
2. Anytime
3. Gideon
4. Golden
5. I'm Amazed
6. Wordless Chorus
7. Smokin From Shootin
8. Touch Me Pt II
Note: this is more of a prediction than a request.... MY list would be a lot more obscure, but I'm trying to be reasonable
Note2: I'm going to NYC so I really don't care what they play
1 OBH
2 Touch Me 1
3 Highly Suspicious
4 I'm Amazed
5 Off the Record
6 Wordless
7 Anytime
8 Mahgeetah
Opening for Petty.. trying not to be better than Petty... hmm...
1.) At Dawn
2.) One Big Holiday
3.) Wordless Chorus
4.) Friends Again
5.) I'm Amazed
6.) Smokin->
7.) Run Thru->
8.) Touch Me pt. 2
Kyle, the first thing I said when I saw this thread was, "thank you for changing the subject!" You are too kind.
And this is a topic dear to my heart, for I am still stung from the three show run in April, with virtually identical setlists.
Also Highly Suspicious is how similar your predicted setlist is to the ones in Birmingham, Nashville, and Atlanta.
I must keep the faith that I will hear Steam Engine, War Begun, something epic I've yet to see, even when opening for Mr. Petty.
Open with something to grab 'em.
Toss a golden bone or two for the true believers (see above)
I must think on this some more (retreats back into the bomb bay door). -anyone familiar with "Dark Star"?
1) Wordless Chorus
2) Way that He Sings
3) Off the Record
4) I'm Amazed
5) Gideon
6) Lay Low
7) Golden
8) Dondante
9) Smokin>Touch Me Part II
10) OBH
Quote-anyone familiar with "Dark Star"?
Sorry this might be the most stupid question, but in what of the variable formats do you mean "Dark Star?"
My plate doesn't let my thoughts get past the Dead when I see "Dark Star" but you likely mean something very different.
It's 12am now, and I'm beginning to mould back into a pumpkin, forgive me.

Sorry. I debated this reference due to confusion with the GD tune. I was referring to the sci fi film "Dark Star", where a computer (think HAL from 2001) has to talk itself out of self detonating. Hence the reference to the "bomb bay doors". Sorry for the confusion.
1)Off the Record
2)I'm Amazed
3)Evil Urges
4)Petty Cover w/ Petty
5)Anytime
6)Dancefloors
7)Magheeta
8)Lay Low
9)OBH

It's also the title of a Beck song. I'm pretty sure that he doesn't listen to the Grateful Dead since he said "I smell hippie" when he came out on stage at Bonnaroo in 2006. That is one of my favorite all time quotes.

BUMP as the day has arrived.
If anyone else wants to guess, get your entry in. People who have guessed may want to revise, given
a) gonna be 75 minutes of goodness
b) setlists seem a little more interesting than we might have thought a few months ago
A prize to the winner: I will send whoever's closest a piece of pretty cool MMJ poster memorabilia!!! (judged completely subjectively and unscientifically by me)

WOW! Is it today??? So excited to see the setlist!
I am sticking with my original prediction.....as it really doesn't matter, my predictions in life, work, music etc are always off... :) But that's what makes it so much fun!
Have fun Kyle!
OK so my list is pretty much the songs I always use when introducing someone to the Jacket, along with a hope for Circuital and the realistic OBH opener and Smokin > Run Thru > Touch Me finale. I can't believe TP actually thinks he can follow MMJ, the Heartbreakers are really gonna have to be on tonight to even hold a candle to the "opener."
Read in an interview with Jim that he would love to play a song with Petty, THAT would be awesome.

I can hear Jim singing "Wildflowers" with Tom Petty and the HBs--perhaps under spotlights of lavendar-pinkish colored hues. They would be saints singing lullabies together--sweet!

This.
I doubt the guys get more than 45 minutes to open. But I'd imagine they will play their standards, and mix in a few songs to prep for NYC. If they want to play to the Petty crowd, then my thoughts are they play this (in no particular order):
OBH (would be highly surprised if they don't do this every night opening)
Mahgeeta
Dancefloors
Just Because I Do (!!!!! one can dream right?)
Anytime
Off the Record
I'm Amazed
Lay Low
Way That He Sings
Also - would love to hear Jim sing something with Petty. End of the Line Wilbury's cover anyone!??!?!
OK - it's nice to be back at work where I have time for such things ;D
I have reviewed the entrants and the winner is:
FIDDLECASTRO
with a close second to Moses Malone. Given that the boys were "supposed" to play until 8:15 and ended 5 mins early, if they had snuck in an At Dawn, Moses Malone would have won and I would have been ecstatic.
Thanks all for playing. Fun to think about what to play to a bunch of newbies. Turns out it wasn't really a "bunch" of newbies - as I said in the show thread, the place was EMPTY.
Fiddle, PM me your mailing address and I'll send you out your prize. Please keep your expectations in check, it's only a modest little thing, but worth the price you paid to enter!
