Title: Voodoo Fest, MMJ showing more love to NOLA
Post by: midwesterner on Jun 21, 2010, 09:21 AM
Very cool to see MMJ are headlining Voodoo Fest. I doubt I will make it but perhaps this means more shows in the south after or before Halloween.

 :D

I bought a ticket to this the other night just before the line up was announced.  No MMJ.   But, since I'll be able to ride my bike to this event, I wasn't going to complain.

Then, I get up today and my first email message is the MMJ annoncement  :D :D :D :D

Ya mon!  This just gets better and better.

Anyone coming down?  Halloween in NoLa is nuts!

I have heard such great things about Nola on Halloween which is easily my favorite holiday. But after going to NYC for 5 nights this doesn't seem doable.

All 5 in NYC -- AWESOME!

Yeah, I had a brief moment this morning when I thought I'd skip the NY shows that I can make it to, but quickly changed my mind.

Well, if the stars align or you win the lotto and can make it down, let me know!

I might try to make this.  I was going to go last year, but it fell through.  This year the funds are better, but I'll have to see how much vacation I have left by October.  AND I'm going to Italy in late August/early September, so that might put a big dent in the funds.  Either way, awesome!  Exicted for you NoVa!

Just bought my tickets!!!!!!! I wouldve preferred a single day pass, but I couldn't find one on the website...and they don't have the schedule slots up yet, so I wasn't gonna chance missing out on this this!  :D

Does anyone know what the set lengths are typically for voodoo??

Thanks, Penny!  I haven't moved yet though...heading down at the end of the month. I start the new job on July 9.  Super excited!

Hawkeye -- I hope that you can make it!

EasyRider -- see you there!  I haven't been to VooDoo in a long while.  Pretty excited that MMJ will get a closing slot, in the forest no less.  Should be a great show!

Is there a reason why they're not listed on the VE website?

Even though their post-jazz fest show at Preservation Hall will be tough to rival, another late night post-festival gig in New Orleans doesn't seem to be out of the question:

"Each night as the gates at City Park close, the electricity of the Voodoo Experience and the spirits of New Orleans will mix and mingle into a nonstop celebration along Frenchmen Street, the French Quarter, Uptown, the Warehouse District and all point in between. The best local musicians and many Voodoo artists will take the stages of legendary venues...Known as Voodoo After Dark or Voodoo 24/7, there is no shortage of live music and sweaty dancing as each night's celebration will surely extend past sunrise."
(from Voodoo site)

We can dream, can't we?

P.S. jmk, check this link: http://2010.thevoodooexperience.com/

It's a tricky site to maneuver

Halloween in New Orleans is almost a high holiday.  Do come prepared to costume.  Trick or treating is optional, costuming is not.  ;)  I haven't heard anything yet about the MoMs Ball, but details will be available as the date gets a little closer.

I'll post here as I find out who's playing where, etc.  How long will you be in town for?

Also, does anyone know when single-day tickets might be going on sale?

Not too sure which day they'll be playing, but you can expect single day tickets in late September/early October. They usually sell them only a few weeks before the festival.

I'm not sure if Voodoo usually sells out or not, but a 3-day pass is $170 including fees and single day passes run for $70 (not including fees)...soo if you want to hit Saturday and Sunday, it's almost worth it to just buy a 3-dayer and have the choice to go Friday.

MoMs Ball??? What is this? We're engaged and thinking about tying the knot while down there. And we've thought about driving down there on monday and staying a week but that could get costly.

Sooo great Louisville news!! Now is anyone else in my boat:

I have a 3-day Voodoo pass, yet I live smack between New Orleans and Louisville temporarily. I obviously would rather see MMJ than anything at Voodoo on Friday night, BUT that would mean 20 hrs. of driving in one weekend to make their Voodoo set.

My question: will the Louisville show be epic enough to merit $100 in gas plus a ticket (and then drive to NO for Voodoo)? OR since wax fang is sharing set time (not that they aren't great) and it's a HUGE venue, should I stick with a more cozy Halloween show (inconveniently unconfirmed) in the park that will probably be longer and spookier. Curses...

I much appreciate opinions, my mind is open to your generous suggestions.

you should make the trip on Fri

1  it's the 'hometownness' that will make it special, not the length
2. i think the L-ville set might even be longer than VooDoo (or similar)
3. you might get to meet Teo in L-ville
4. free chicken (maybe)
5. it will be plenty spooky, bring a change of pants

I thought about this, but it wasn't 'til you said it that it hit me...the trouble is New Orleans is home for me, so it feels like a hometown show when they play there too!

I guess this is kinda one of those between a pillow and a soft place decisions...thanks for your input  :)

Check out Ozzy's space: http://www.myspace.com/ozzyosbourne

Process of elimination proves that the Jacket will freak New Orleans on HALLOWEEN night!! Unless of course Ozzy fudged his myspace dates in a fit of drunken blundering....

If this truly means that Ozzy plays on Saturday, that almost positively leaves MMJ as the closer of the festival. My first Halloween show with my favorite band in my favorite city...hope to see you guys there   [smiley=evil.gif]

P.S. There's this too: http://stereogumbo.com/2010/06/20/voodoo-fest-schedule/

I still don't understand the lack of buzz about this one either.

It's a follow up show to T5 and Louisville, so the way I figure it is they will be well versed and capable of playing the hell out of ALL of their repertoire, and they will be on an emotional high after most likely playing an epic hometown show.

SO then they land their shoes in New Orleans feelin' glorious without too much pressure, because they just nailed the most anticipated run of 5 shows in their musical careers. The people will be weird, the vibe will be great and (God willing) they will have a considerably long set time to close the festival out. Can it possibly be bad???  :D

SO glad you found this...even though I can't find it on the website, I trust you! I'm just happy that our suspicions are confirmed.

Hopefully this means some blocks will come out in the coming week (Voodoo gets a D- for keeping festival goers informed).

Sorry to post and run earlier today. =)

Here's the link to the daily line ups:  http://thevoodooexperience.com/2010exp/daily-line-up/

So far, I can't find where to get single day tickets.  The email that I got had a subject line of "Single Day Pre-Sale Starts Now!"  but no other info on the pre-sale....guess it's coming soon.

Edit
Just noticed the link to the pre-sale daily tix in the email... :-[  On sale to the general public Friday.

And, the VooDoo banner went up at City Park last weekend...!

Thanks for the link! I feel a little better now...and yes, that banner is a beautiful sight.

The lineup Sunday looks really great all around, I wish I had a large robot that could hold my place all day on the front row for MMJ so that I didn't have to miss out on the other stuff!

Do you have any idea about when they're going to announce specific times??

(P.S. Nova, I know this is a bit preemptive, but maybe we could team up and hold down some ground on the mainstage all day and periodically take turns going to see other stuff. I'm gonna have a party of 3)

Easy...happy to help. =)  I'm usually not a front row person though.  Are you going all three days?

Pt2...I'm a local since July. :)

Let me know if you have questions about where to stay, etc.  I haven't been to VooDoo in a number of years, so I'm not the best person to comment on what it'll be like.

Now we just need a late night/early morning show at the Mahalia Jackson and we'll be all set!  ;)

Come to think of it I might need to try out the 50 feet back, sonic sweet spot approach...

I have a 3-day pass, but I can't make it for Friday unfortunately (I like that day's lineup much better than Saturday). I will be there for the last 2 days though.

And welcome to the city!! I'm from there, but I temporarily live in Alabama unfortunately...nevertheless, this is my first Voodoo. And if a Mahalia show is announced I'll drain the bank account.

touchingmept2: I'm probably going to stay with a friend uptown, so I won't have to hotel it. If I were you I'd stay at a (reputable) hostel. I don't know names, but there are quite a few around the city that are safe, cheap and are inhabited by very interesting people.

Just checked the Times-Picayune archives online and it looks like last year they announced the actual schedules at midnight on October 1.  Not sure if they'll go by a similar time frame this year, but it looks like we'll be waiting another 3 weeks or so.

Did I read that correctly a few posts above that single-day tickets were going on sale Friday?

Thanks for the welcome, Easy!

I usually try to get to the "sweet" spot sound-wise, but it really depends on the crowd.  I like to have a little room to move around, so I'm usually out of the fray towards the back.

That weekend is going to be huge:  Saints home game against the Steelers Sunday night, Halloween Sunday night, and VooDoo Fest.  I'm still waiting on the MoMs shows details, but I think the band will be Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes.   ;)  Love, love, love this band.

I just have to figure out how I will make it to work on Monday.  ;D

MLBrady...looks the the daily tix are $60+fees = $73.40

MoMs Ball is the 30th...Johnny Sketch then Papa Gros Funk.

Glad to see more people from the forum are getting tickets. Is anyone planning on staking out a spot up front as soon as the gates open?

This is my first voodoo, so I don't know how things usually fill up.
I definitely want to see some other bands throughout the day (especially PHJB since Jim might make an appearance), but to not be on the front row would be tragic for me!

If anybody's interested in fencing off a forum base camp on the rail of the Voodoo stage, I'll bring some barbed wire to contribute.

QuoteWhere has the time gone?!

I'm not sure how many are coming in -- but feel free to PM me here or post if you need something or have questions.  I am working on Friday, but hope to scoot out at lunch time to head to the festival.  Should be there all day Saturday and Sunday.  Gonna try to head to the park this week to see how things are shaping up...

Friday night there are some good show options:
Honey Island Swamp Band      @ DBA
Rebirth Brass Band @ Howlin' Wolf
Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes @ Maple Leaf
Walter 'Wolfman' Washington @ The 12 Bar
Glen David Andrews @ Three Muses
Galactic @ Tipitina's Uptown
Widespread Panic/Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk @ UNO Lakefront Arena

Saturday Night
*MoMs Ball:Josh Garrett and the Bottomline, Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes, Papa Grows Funk @ Howlin' Wolf
The Dead Kenny Gs: Skerik,Mike Dillon, Brad Houser @ Le Bon Temps Roule
Jon Cleary      @ Maple Leaf
Billy Iuso & the Restless Natives      @ Oak Wine Bar
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue/Bonerama@ Tipitina's Uptown
Widespread Panic/The New Mastersounds @ UNO Lakefront Arena

*I'm ticketed for the Ball...theme is Never Wonderland or something like that .  Costume required.

Sunday Night
The Dead Kenny Gs @ Blue Nile
Hot 8 Brass Band @ Howlin' Wolf
Kirk Joseph's Backyard Groove @ The 12 Bar
Widespread Panic/The Dirty Dozen Brass Band @ UNO Lakefront Arena
New Mastersounds @ Tip's Uptown (midnight start)

I realize any answer to this question would be pure speculation, but is there any likelihood of the boys playing an after show following Voodoo?

It all ends at 9 on Sunday, so it shouldn't be past their bedtime....then again after T5 and Louisville exhaustion probably isn't the half of it.

I've been checking the mahalia jackson theatre every day and there's still nothing for the 31st, but it would be very short notice if they announced one now.

Same here dude!  We won't be in NOLA til early Sat morning tho but oh well!

Ah, I see you're a fellow Okie.  Which part of OK are you coming from?
I'm from durant, aka dead rat. Southeastern part of ok. I've been looking forward to the voodoo fest since June!!! I hope the boys play longer than 2 hours... an aftershow would be nice. Also a cover of ccr's "I put a spell on you" would almost be a given since it will be in bayou country hehehe!!! ::)

Well, at this point I doubt anything official will be announced.  They may go out after their show (I met Patrick at Johnny White's after the Pres. hall Jazz Fest show), but I don't think there will be an MMJ show directly after their set at VooDoo.

Forecast revision..it's been muggy and hot here all week.  It's gonna rain cats and dogs today giving way to beautiful sunny clear skies through the weekend.  It will be a little cooler than my first post, so you may want a sweater or something.  I'm not sure how much rain we'll get or how muddy the festival area might be after today's rain.  I'll post more weather (how exciting!) if things change drastically.

I forgot about the time change  :D What a pleasant surprise...

I was kinda hoping the whole set would be played in the dark, and it appears now it will (after all, it wouldn't be the same if they played The Dark in the light)!

Excellent.

According to this site, http://www.webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/b2.html, we don't change until the 7th.

Oh well...that still puts the sunset at around 6:15, yes? Maybe we'll get an orange and purple sky for the first song...that I would not mind.

My friend is down in NOLA this weekend and I got a text from her a few days ago saying:  "How the hell is MMJ headlining over Ozzy?  Ozzy IS Halloween.  MMJ isn't even good."

I was ready to throw my phone out the window, but I calmly told her that MMJ is the best band touring right now and Ozzy hasn't been significant for about 15-20 years.

Fuck, I wish I was in NOLA tonight.  Ungrateful girl will probably whine about the people "hippie dancing" and leave after two songs.  I'd be there ripping the ole peace pipe and grooving with the best band of the last decade.

ummmm  from this same article:

"Earlier, James announced that the Voodoo date would be his band's final show for some time. If so, they went out with a bang. A no-holds-barred "One More Holiday" served as a classic big finish for My Morning Jacket, and Voodoo 2010. "

what does some time mean?  :-[ this article is killing me on a few levels - first the comparison to KOL, then the quote above, then the incorrect title of the song.  I feel I am in the twilight zone.

Unless I was blacked out I think they cut Move on Up and Dancefloors from the set, sadly. they were pressed for time and moved to One Big Holiday. Needless to say the show was amazing.

Stumbled upon this and provided a sweet, yet brief, perspective of the concert.

Holy SH*T. Were you able to download any video or audio from this??? I'd give an arm and a leg to have such great footage from that night!! Chills up my spine, chills up my spine...

ER - I haven't downloaded any audio or video...just the preview from LiveSet. I was front row for this, and although I haven't attended many MMJ shows, I knew this was a special one as I was watching. Hopefully the guys will release the rest...unbelievable footage

I was probably right behind you then! It was really an incredible show, the energy was unreal. And this footage excites me because it seems like it offers some really unique perspectives (behind the stage, as they walk up the steps, etc.)

If you want to, post some love and testimony in the thread I just started campaigning for the boys to let Live Set release the stream. Thanks again!

really awesome footage, but the audio in that really bothered me. I guess their audio sucked or they wouldn't have to use the studio versions.

the opening scene with them walking out is epic, though.

Either that or the band has rights to the sound and LiveSet they can't release any sbd stream without consent.

Raging-mega-huge bummer Live Set only got pieces, but happy to provide a walk down memory lane. Once again, great show. Hopefully they swing down south and blow our minds to bits sometime this fall. In the meantime, I'll enjoy that piece.

I agree, that's the only thing that I didn't like about the video. I do remember, and anyone standing close should also, the bass was dialed up big-time that night. Didn't bother me all that much, but may not have made for the best audio.
