My Fellow Jacketeers,
The time is upon us. The greatest Jacket event of all time is on the horizon. We have been called to make the pilgrimage to the Great and Shining City in the East for five nights of pure and unadulterated bliss.
Shoot. How are we gonna swing this?
Please post here if you have any suggestions or ideas regarding finding hotels, splitting rooms, group rates, getting there, getting around, and otherwise doin' it on the cheap.
Yours in Jackethood,
ALady
Be broke and henpecked like me then it's all good in da hood as you won't have to worry about logistics.
Count me among those willing to sleep on the floor and share a hotel room with any number of people. I'm going to pretend to be a backpacker and survive on oatmeal and homemade granola.
I just sold my soul to the devil. I'm in !!
I'm thinking it would be cheaper to stay in Jersey and take the train in, yeah?
How feasible is that? Locals?
Count me in on splitting a room. ALady, Southwest has one way flights for $99 going each way right now.
Newark is a good option, also Jersey City is another more affordable close option.
Jersey City has some hotels (Hyatt) and there's a huge mall and pier area over there, you jump on the Path Train and you're in the city in 10 min.
Hoboken has 1 hotel and it's the closest of anywhere outside the city. But it's the W hotel (which is only affordable w/4 people rooming) but from there you can jump on the bus to 42nd street (15 min) or take the train into 33rd st. So depends on how much you can spend.
Lady, I can email some stuff later.
Where there is a will there is a way.
The Jacket force is with us. We shall triumph.
Meaning: I will sleep on the floor and live off granola bars for a week.
There are lots of rooms on Hotwire in or around Newark for under a hundred dollars a night in the 3.5 star range. With Hotwire, you don't know exactly where you are staying until you pay, but who really cares. I use Hotwire quite a bit for flights and rooms.

Last summer I stayed at the Double Tree in Jersey City (met Fleet Foxes in the lobby...woooo). Anyway. It was a nice room, about $220 a night I think. Point is, it was double beds and a mini-suite area with a couch. Could fit a bunch of people and the train station was behind the hotel.
To be honest, I think getting a hotel/affording the week stay will be less of a problem than making sure everyone who plans to go can get tickets. I have a feeling they will sell out quickly...
QuoteTo be honest, I think getting a hotel/affording the week stay will be less of a problem than making sure everyone who plans to go can get tickets. I have a feeling they will sell out quickly...
and being that most are weeknights will help if you book rooms early...
i am kinda worried about the tix, too
I am praying to god that the 5 day pass will be still be available on the 15th. It would have been nice to have more than 4.5 days notice to shell out $205+ tax.

Yea the paranoia about not getting one of these 5 night packages has already set in.....what's the deal with the presale, are we gonna get a code for it or something??

You're right.
If i can't get the 5 day pass I will have to pick a night or two only. Definitely At Dawn, that is a must.
I am going to be stressing about getting a ticket in the presale all goddamn weekend.

I'm with you bud, The only way I could swing it is to hop a frieght train like a hobo and stay in a cardboard box for a week. I'm stoked about the shows but dejected cuz I can't make it. FUCK FUCK FUCK
I'm praying for some decent show recordings.
holy crap my head just exploded. Really. Like I'm sitting here at work and can't think straight.

That and/or maybe a DVD comes from this.

Pretty much.
I literally just had to go for a walk because I was freaking out. The good kind of freaking out, but still.

This exactly....
CrispYY, aren't you a fellow Okie? :-?
yeah, the people i work with think i'm crazy. well, even more so now that is. they don't know who mmj is & therefore can't possibly understand how epic that week is going to be.
i live in nj & would be more than happy to offer up a place for a few of you to crash at. the problem is my nutty work hours - not really conducive to having guests... i'm not even sure i can make it to all 5 shows. as of right now, only the tues & fri shows are definite (assuming i can get tix). if i can work something out for the whole week, i'll post here.
i just got a message from my boss. he called to "discuss start dates, etc." PERFECT timing!
Score, yvon! :)

SO grateful I can share this insanity with all of you!
I am a jersey girl so will happy to help out with all kinds of logistics including finding hotels/bringing yummy homemade treats to supplement the granola/helping with rides to/from the airport etc....
Let's get our packages FIRST, and worry about the shacking up on Monday afternoon!
OH MY GOD this is unbelievably epic!!!
Crushed by this announcement as I would have been down for at least the first 3 shows, but this is just too close to my annual trip to Portland to make happen :'(.
Tell me people, what kind of commute are you looking to make for these shows? I have lived all across the great state of NJ, and I can maybe help you find something that's a good mix of debauchery and affordability.
For those of you without a couch to crash on in NYC may I suggest researching short term apartment rentals in NYC. Since it is a week long affair you should be able to find all sorts of rentals throughout NYC. Much cheaper than a hotel, and you get a kitchen! I have friends who do this in just about every city they visit and they always spend less than a hotel accommodation...

yes exactly .. i'm like OMG TICKETS! then i'm like WAIT BE COOL! and then i'm like OMG TICKETS. i don't know if i should be freaked out or if getting a pass isn't gonna be an issue. this whole thing just sorta took me by surprise.
i haven't read this thread all the way through so this suggestion may have been thrown out already but ... i think it'd probably be a really good idea to look into renting an apartment situation for a week via craigslist. there are such things out there and "alot of people" in an apartment would probably be more comfortable than "alot of people" in a hotel room.
for lodging...
check out www.homeaway.com
better than hotels...
yes i work for them
From what I understand, Terminal5 has a capacity of 3,000. I wouldn't worry about the 5-night package tickets selling out. That's nuts! I wouldn't even worry about if you were waiting until the 18th when the individual tickets go on sale, as long as you don't wait too much longer after that.

That's such a good idea, wizzard. I always use homeaway.com or vrbo.com for other vacations and I don't know why it didn't occur to me to use it for this.
Good call!
No problem Alady! I have met the most amazing people through renting their houses (ACL 2007 comes to mind). Glad to be of help!
Those Hostels or are they hostles, whatever. they're like 30 a night but you're in bunks with like 6 people in a single room & share one bath. I couldn't do this with strangers. I was thinking if six fans met & you're comfortable with each other, it seems sainer. I'll be at the Diego & L.A. shows in Aug. I'm from Phoenix, Az. I'd love to meet other fans & discuss this
Yes, my messege under profile does indeed state that, 'Time is Never Wasted if you're wasted all the time' but I'm going to be WAY 2 busy to drink 5 days in NYC!
i want (NEED) the 5 day package. getting time off and lodging will be a problem though. if anyone wants to gang up and split a room or something, lemme know.
plus i have to purchase tickets online while i'm at work. hopefully i wont have a meeting that morning...
I don't know how I'm going to swing this, but yet I can't imagine not being at all 5 shows.
What would I be doing? Sitting at home watching some program on televsion that I could Tivo or that will be on next week.
When I try to be rational though, I think, "man, its an entire week off from work (1/4 of my alloted vacation time) to see 5 concerts in a week. Sounds like an excessive expenditure that is probably not worth it. I'd have to fly from Miami to NYC, spend a week in the city paying city prices for food/drink.
But then I think. Holy shit. This is truly epic. Your favorite band in the entire world is going to play 5 motha fucking concerts in one motha fucking week. They are gonna break out the whole motha fucking catalog. You can be "trapped" in a room with 3,000 people who all feel the same way about this band and the music as you do. AND.....something like this may NEVER happen again......
so I must go. But how?
I have 5 days to figure it out.
At least you have some time to figure it out, Haldon.
Also, to save on food:
City Vendor Hotdogs/Soft Pretzels: $1-2
Fruit Truck: 4 bananas/$1 2 apples/$1
NY sized sliced pizza: approx $3.50
+McDonalds :)

There are barrels of live frogs for sale in Chinatown. Seriously. I saw them and they saw me.

This is a great idea, I've used VRBO before, and would totally be on board with a group who want to do this.
I'd be into that. Maybe we could stay out in one of the boroughs too if that's any cheaper.
Let's say 6 folks to a 2 br? Who's in? ;D

I have to assume this to be sarcasm. These tickets will be a premium.

That would be awesome, br00ke! I haven't spent much time in NYC so input from you locals would definitely be appreciated! :)

I am staying with friends and working each day from our NYC office. Which means I don't have to take vacation days or pay for a hotel. i feel very luck that I still have lots of friends in NYC.

Haha. I was gonna post of picture of me doing just that holding my phone with pure shock in my face but alas, nobody would do the honor of taking the photo and it just wouldn't have been organic had I attempted the same with my TRex arms. :-[ Setting a timer for a shitter photo just doesn't feel right.....
Can anyone suggest a hotel or 2 that fit into the following criteria?
1. NOT in Manhattan (There's no way I'm going to pay NYC prices to park my car).
2. Close to a train station (Quick, easy escape after the shows)
3. Cheap but not fleabag (Don't want to go broke, but don't want to be knifed)

Yeah. I was kidding anyway. ...Enjoy the shows everyone! :)
I'm glad everybody is thinking like this so openly. The epicity of this event is impossible to ignore. The poor boy pricing doesn't bode well in the New York though. I have told myself that if I can go to this, I genuinely would not need to see them anymore, except of course a Louisville show. It's also possible that they're doing this because they might not play again for awhile, and this is a send-off to their fans for a break that is indefinite. Either way, I want to go. The tickets are doable, and the travel is doable, but unless a hotel drops to Kentucky prices, I will have to bum it up.
So, I'm in for sharing space.
BEWARE!!!!! I snore. I like narcotics. I'm fine with orgies (as long as the girls outnumber the guys).
some of this is true

I'm hoping this isn't a "send off" but rather a "enjoy our old songs because we're coming out with a new album and thats what you'll be hearing at the majority at shows fr the next 2 years" sort of thing.
Obviously this all depends on getting tickets, but having looked a little at homeaway.com, it looks like renting an apartment for a week would be very doable, and for < $200 a person. Several in Brooklyn, one even in Chelsea (the description of "Huge" for 550 sq.ft. is amusing ;D ). Haven't looked at VRBO yet. I would be very interested in doing this with like-minded people, and I know there are several here already.
Snorers could be a problem though. ;)
<200/person/week?
Not bad...
$200 flight
$200 ticket
$200 lodging
$200 posters ;D
hrmmmm.

It looks daunting, but October's a long way off. Plenty of time to pick up a part-time job, do some freelance work...or just generally hustle ;D

Well I make my own beer so that's not an issue, and I'm just out of college so I'm not against eating Ramen for 5 or 6 days straight.
ALady, great thread you've started!
I would love love looooove to partake in the weekly apt. dealie! That is a brilliant idea indeed.
And/or staying in NJ and taking the train in sounds like a great idea too. Assuming there are probably craigslist apartment rentals there too that would be affordable (possibly even cheaper?)
I'd also like to throw out the possibility of carpooling from Pittsburgh. I don't know if it's any cheaper for anyone to fly into Pitt instead of NYC (or worth the price difference, considering the mildly long haul, etc...)
--OR-- if anyone was already planning on driving from somewhere FURTHER than Pitt and would like to maybe catch a break from Pitt to NY, there is safe private parking at my hacienda.
I'm allergic to cigarettes, but the smoking of frankincense and/or myrrh is encouraged ;)
Anyhow it pans out, I'd still reeeeally love to meet you folks and spend a great week of all play and no work in the Big Apple!

Woodnymph, this is your chance to catch up on your shows! I know we are going to make it a vaction trip...Im thinking of staying in a hotel in NJ and just taking a taxi or train into the city.
The Dude, you're so right!! I know I'm such a noob still, but I'm SO GLAD to have been blessed with this opportunity! (All of these shows, actually!) 7 in one year makes me feel much better about my newness...
Sounds like you've got a good masterplan there! I'm trying to search for campgrounds outside the city, and I've found a couple, but the tricky part is finding a place to park my car and take a train to the spot. And also which train I'd have to take... and what subway to take after the train.... but I see it's near Central Park, so I'll for sure want to be hangin there toooo
We'll see what pans out with shared hotel/apt. situation too!
Heh let's just all get ready to get our tix tomorrow-- you know we all will!! [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]
Yeeeeoooowwwwww! We are in like flint folkssss! I'm sure just about everyone's (who's not from NYC) already checked the Term. 5 site for directions and the like, but I thought I'd post this up and a NYC subway map too, cause they can be real cornfusing if you don't either a.) have someone show you the ropes or b.) have any experience or c.) at least do a little research......

woodnymph, that's some good info.
Would taking a cab be a good option? In Las Vegas it was on avg. 10-15 bucks to get around there. i'm sure in NYC it'll be alot more.

Ahh tough question... I didn't take any cabs during my couple trips to NYC. I saw The Dead at MSG and Phil & Friends @ The Nokia, and my friend's uncle & aunt live in Brooklyn, and the sub was the way to go.
Any New Yorkers (or others in the know) that can shed a lil light??

From Penn St. to Terminal 5 you'll pay like 10-12 bucks....otherwise you can pay the 2 bucks get on basically any subway goign uptown and get off at Columbus, which is only a few blocks away im pretty sure
Exams are the new enemy! Which is now the new reason I can't 'swing it'. Not impressed, it would have been an amazing adventure.
