After spending much of 2009 working on side projects, My Morning Jacket returned this year to reclaim its reputation as one of the best live bands around.

The band spent the summer opening for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and this week it will move into Terminal 5 performing a different album at each show.

Bassist Tom Blankenship, who along with Jim James is one of the original members of the band, looked back at each album.

'The Tennessee Fire'
"I'm a 20-year-old video-store clerk playing in a band. A bandmate gives me a cassette for another project he's working on. ... I listen to the tape, amazed that this hilarious dude Jim has written these beautiful songs."

'At Dawn'
"The band records its next album over a three-day weekend in the summer of 2000.  The record remains ... the best of what's possible with a one-inch tape machine, pieced-together equipment and late nights spent making each other howl with laughter as much as creating music."

'It Still Moves'
"I've been forced into retirement from the video store due to a grueling tour schedule. The band takes a very momentary break from the road to document a collection of sprawling songs, most of which have grown from years of being played live."

'Z'
"I'm 27 and can't shake the feeling that this next album will be my last. This album is the sound and feeling of the band wordlessly battling the dark elements and coming through the other side in one stronger piece."

'Evil Urges'
"I'm a married 30-year-old with two four-legged kids. The band spends a month in a secluded Colorado cabin working out songs, dog-sitting and cooking together.  The result is our most collaborative album. The songwriting feels more concise, and the sound is incredibly tight and clear."

I second this. epic stuff here. i hope jim and the band heard that guy and the cheers that followed.

There's no way Jim didn't hear that guy.  It was a perfect moment.  You could hear a pin drop.  There was literally one person who was being obnoxious and it was the guy who yelled twice way loud at the end, but he got instantly shh'd which I thought was done in the most superb was you could do it.  

That seems like one of the better crowds in a while.  It's also cool in the Lil Billy video when johnny is kinda center stagin' it (not hatin' on him) and then him and jim put there heads into eachothers shoulders, representing of course the connection the music has created.  but what I liked about it was at the end jim went over to carl and did it more intense, like "hey girl, you're my man".   love that the band loves each other to some degree like that.  makes it even more fun to watch because it inevitably makes them more spontaneous right?  I'm way fucking jealous.  I'd beat up a girl to be at these shows.  

right about now, it's 10:43pm EST.  Minds are probably being ejected from several skulls right now.   :'( fuck it I'm going to go beat it, I'm out of heroin and need a head rush.

I have never heard anyone describe T5 as being a crisp sounding venue. Typically the reports are that its a horrible sounding venue.. I thought last night sounded quite good!

HOLY crap......i just watched PWW....that was unfreakingbelievable....sorta trippy in the middle, and just so f'ing HOT.  Thank you for such expert camera work! Can't wait to watch the others, but want to wait for optimum viewing conditions....which is not when my child is watching spongebob and eating skittles :)

darkglow, just watched you "phone" vid.  TREMENDOUS!  i loved watching everyone dancing, gesturing, hearing some strong sing along bits.  during that breakdown in the middle of the song i sat at my desk clutching my head from the fantastic-ness or the whole thing(which is what i was probably doing the night of the show).

yeah.. heddy is probably the most recognizable moving body in the shot by far.. those chops and that head movement..

my favorite video to capture the excitement of each show has to be the At Dawn vid where I shot approx 4 minutes of the scene before the curtains open for "At Dawn".. if that doesn't give any of you chills all over again I'm not sure what will.

It has been almost one year since one of  the greatest weeks of my life and the magic of all 5 of those shows has never left.  Miss all my T5 friends (and Red Rocks clan and MPP and so on ...)

Oh man I've been stewing on this all week!!!  I think I was getting all packed up for the trip to Woodstock about this time last year.... and good lord how that unfolded.....  I can't stop thinking about these one year anniversaries of awesomeness!!!!!   :D :D :D

Went on a total T5 YouTube binge last night. I love watching my videos from that week, but there's something so cool about seeing clips of the same show you were at, from a totally different perspective.

The undisputed highlight -- MOVE ON UP. The second-to-last tune of the week, and man did they ever bring it. I'm sure it's posted elsewhere in this thread, but I'm a man who appreciates a good MMJ video, and this is one of the best:
