WOW!!!! What a surprise! Jim James at the White House! Dude never seizes to amaze!
Guess who already has plans to be in DC for a holiday party that weekend? This girl. Thanks, Yim.
Wow! This is a nice surprise, though kind of strange too. I don't know if I've ever watched a National Christmas Tree Lighting...I'd imagine the President is there?
Other performers are BB King, Maroon 5, and Sara Bareilles. No mention of YY on the official site yet: http://www.thenationaltree.org/

wow, so cool. bigtime gig for Yim
Woop, woop, don't have any real concept of what this means, but it's big? Yaaay? :)
Wanna go.
What song do you think he'll do? This is great!
QuoteWhat song do you think he'll do? This is great!
Hahahaha. Seriously. Still gonna try and make it.
"O Holy Night" with his shoes off? ;) ;D
Not sure how to go about getting tickets. Might have to just watch this on the tee vee...
http://www.nationalparks.org/news/?fa=viewArticle&articleID=3133
Look at you, the song he wrote for Obama.
QuoteLook at you, the song he wrote for Obama.
I read about that somewhere.
Quote"O Holy Night" with his shoes off? ;) ;D
Yes!
Going to have to watch this on the tele, cause i trip to Washington @ the moment isn't in my budget with the holiday season coming upon us. That said i Wish i could go but looking forward to hearing Yim again!

http://www.nationalparks.org/news/?fa=viewArticle&articleID=3133
ok....tee vee it may be.....looks like the lottery was nov 4-6.....hmmph!t
his is pretty cool...i watched it last year when ray lamontagne was on....it's a very sedate sort of performance (ya know, in my opinion) and the first family is there (behind bullet proof glass).....good for yy
i say he should sing....um.......yeah, whatever he sings will be magic :)
wish the whole band could just power into "xmas curtain"; jim needs to sing something from one of the muppet christmas specials!
I think giving Wonderful (The Way I Feel) some national exposure would be appropriate for this event, its a beautiful, wishful song of peace and some promotion for the new album due out in the spring.
Wonderful is a good call. Look At You seems obvious since it's on that Obama compilation. Maybe both. I wonder if he'll only play one song or multiple songs
Any rumblings on a solo show going down in DC while he's here? Would love to see him at the 6th and I Synagogue (just saw Fistful of Mercy there, it was awesome) or the 9:30 Club, which appears to be open on that day...
Was listening to the 2001 WFPK X-Mas show this afternoon to get into the holiday mood in a better way than all the kitsch I've had to suffer in the stores since Halloween.
It's quite a nice set of tunes and really shows how much promise there was 9 years ago in Yim and the boys at the time. Of course, Oh Holy Night with the shoes interruption is the highlight.
So, since I'm in the neighborhood, I have to see Yim at the X-Mas tree lighting. As much as I'd like to subscribe to madhatter's optimism about a solo show, I doubt it will happen. I hope I'm wrong.
Now, all I need is a ticket for a seated spot. There was a lottery at the beginning of Nov that is over and there is nothing on Craigslist in this area other than standing room.
Help!
This blows that the lottery already occurred as I could just walk over there from my office on the mall.
QuoteLook at you, the song he wrote for Obama.
Really?? I thought he wrote that for you
QuoteWhat song do you think he'll do? This is great!
Oh Christmas Tree -> We Three Kings -> Silent Night
haha ;)

As I sit here watching the Rockefeller Center tree lighting with (super annoying) Jessica Simpson, I am pondering the song Jim may do. Last year when Ray LaMontagne was on he did Ray Charles' "The Spirit of Christmas." It was very good.
I'm very excited to see what he JJ will do! My sense is that it will be a traditional Christmas song, and something he hasn't done before!
We shall see!!
I'm going. I think. :)
Sassbox wrangled us some fancy seats apparently :D

NO WAY! Awe-some! All right...if you're in DC that weekend, we need to hook up for some lunch or something. I'm visiting friends and I'd love to see you and if Sass will be there then it's double the fun.
Definitely! I'll let you know how the travel plans shake out...I gotta crunch the numbers tonight and make sure it's feasible.
*eek* ;D
Oh so happy for you girls! Super happy for Sass after all she has had to miss this past year!!!! Have a blast! Big Hugs!
seems like a huge honor. really cool stuff. Obama and Jim should sit down and talk world issues.
Excited to dial this up later and see what he will sing......Bundle up ladies, and have a ball!!
Chipmunk's song from Kidzapalooza 07 with banjo would be awesome.

Nope, that one's "stop looking at me like that"

Anyone find it scheduled on their local PBS channel? I'm having a hell of time finding it. I wanted to capture it on my DVR.
is there any word, or does anyone have any idea, about what time Jim will actually be going on. I really don't have an interest in watching the entire thing, just Jim's performance, so any inside info about what time to tune in would be helpful

your local search might be coming up empty just because it's still weeks away and not in the guide.

might help. Boston, for example isn't until 12/22.

QuoteNo prob my friend. Of course by then I bet you and I have seen it online a dozen times!
I know but just between you and me, my real motivation is to send out a mass e-mail to all my friends and family that I have annoyed over the last several years with my over the top MMJ fandom! It will say something like this:
Just wanted to let you know that Jim James from My Morning Jacket is going to play a Christmas song on PBS at 8 pm on Wednesday. Oh and I think the president and BB King will be there too.
10 mins, 49 seconds!!!!! :o
Deck the halls yall...I wonder if JJ will be dressed as Santa...or maybe an elf... ;D
Finally our tax dollars are going to something more entertaining than C-SPAN...
OH man here we gooo!!
Excited!
How in the shit do I watch this
http://www.thenationaltree.org/tree-lighting/
that should take ya right to it!
Rephrase, is it online
Dammit I meant on tv
Well, Oh Holy Night is out. :)
hehe she called him "james"
"Thank you James!"
-Ms. America
sunnovaah! I got a phone call right before it started.
Thank you JAMES !! ::)
That rendition was so pretty :']
i just got home form work and caught the very end of that. was it only one song?
Quotehehe she called him "james"
That was hilarious ;D
grrrrr....just logged on and missed it! what did James sing?
"have yourself a merry little christmas"
I guess it seems so obvious in retrospect he wouldn't play a MMJ song. I was thinking Wonderful or Look at You, but now I feel foolish for even thinking that!
Well done James. Obama was digging it but looked a little disappointed he wasn't getting an acoustic steam engine w/ orchestra
Quotehehe she called him "james"
she shoulda called him yames

awwwww....was he sooooo cute singing it? i can't wait to see it!!

The day after Christmas boys & girls! Louisville!
ahh kinda disapointed
Trish he was super cute indeed! Trademark black cap on and I swear there was like a little owl face peeking out of the pocket of his coat! Am I nuts???
I was checking out Jim's bio on the tree lighting site. I pasted it below. I note it mentions Jim's still working on a solo album...
Jim James
Jim James of My Morning Jacket grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and is a founding member, guitarist, frontman, and lead songwriter of the rock band My Morning Jacket. Formed in 1998, the band's debut album The Tennessee Fire was released in 1999, followed by At Dawn in 2001, It Still Moves in 2003, Z in 2005, and the grammy-nominated Evil Urges in 2008.
Throughout his career Jim has participated in many projects and enjoys singing and collaborating with artists from all genres. In addition to touring with My Morning Jacket, this summer he toured with Daniel Martin Moore and Ben Sollee in support of Appalachian Voices, an organization dedicated to ending the practice of mountain top removal in the Appalachian Mountains. He is currently working on a solo album, and My Morning Jacket is working on their next record, due for release in 2011.
The only person who knew of Yim was Obama. You could tell he appreciated it I think. Kinda thought he was gonna do a Christmas song once it started, whats with Ingrid and Sara getting their own song played? And jackie ivanco or whateva gets extra special attention, whats up with that? Must have been cold!

Yes, during the Monsters of Folk tour.....and I am sure other times as well. I love that he had the owl with him :-*
i was only able to pay 50% attn to jim's performance so i'll have to watch again to be sure - but i enoyed that a great deal. he sounded pretty good from what i heard & he sure did look cute. the sparkle in his eyes was very jolly santa-esque.
love the pocket owl!
I figured it was probably something I hadn't yet caught! I knew the girls would come to the rescue with the lowdown! Hehe thanks ladies :-* :-*
So does he wear the pocket owl whenever he performs without the rest of the MMJ gang since he did it with MOF too?? If so, that's really cool....
maybe we should start a pocket owl thread ;D

The reason I highlighted this is that his website has said he's been working on a solo album for, christ, two years. I figured a more current reference to it made it more real. I was starting to think maybe he'd forgotten. Thanks for the pass.
any idea where i can watch it, like, right now?
It WAS freakin' cold! Thank goodness for free cocoa, Sass and I would have frozen otherwise!
We laughed so hard at "James". ;D I don't think anyone else there knew who he was, but Sass and I cheered our hearts out!
I wondered if he was going to come back out and do another song, but 3 hours in the cold was plenty.
There are a couple of pics up on my Facebook for those of you who know me there.
Thanks for the hookup, Sass! :)
oh shit!! had a 3 hour record store binge and forgot about this!! :-[

And a new persona is born. James James.
You could tell he was holding back a bit. Still great, and great to see Obama enjoying James James.
Would have loved to have seen something from the X-Mas EP, though. This would have been golden:

Caught this on PBS last night, it was so awesome to see Jim with Obama in the same shot. Inspirational even. BB King was awesome too.
