Title: Posters
Post by: johnnYYac on Dec 07, 2010, 11:36 PM
Funny, I can't find a general poster thread.  I just wanted to share my happiness at scoring two Burwell posters for $150.  Not sure of market value, but I think I did well and don't plan to sell 'em.  Christmas is coming early!

Hey Johnny did you score that one poster on top off of ebay?  I saw it there a couple days ago for Buy it Now for only $45 bucks.  Just wish i had the money at the time cause i know that's a good deal for a Burwell MMJ print.  Where were you able to score the one on the bottom?  There were only like 95 of those made i believe?  I agree with you on the market place.

Yowzers...where/how did you land that Alladin print so cheap? That one has been going for in excess of $400. Nice score, congrats!!

Yeah, I saw the Expresso Beans listing two past sales around $400.  The seller, from California, had it on eBay for a Buy It Now price of $200 originally, but last night it was $120 so I had to snag it.  Its one of a run of only 95.  The other Burwell, also from Portland (is he from there?) in 2008, was $40, so I guess I should have said $160 for both (including shipping).

Regarding the 2005 Portland Burwell, either they didn't know what they had, they needed the money, or the market is softening.  I don't buy posters to resell for profit, and only pick up a few outside of the shows I've attended, but this will be my prized possession.  Now, I just need to figure out how to explain this to my wife. :-[

I know selling your wife on $100+ for a poster will be difficult, but I can tell you that's the best deal on a poster I have ever seen for an MMJ poster on ebay.   Wowza indeed.

I keep a list of where all 95 posters are, and I'm up to 25 or so with this one.   If you wouldn't mind PMing me the # when you get it, that'd be great (if you don't object to sharing that info).

Of course I'll give you the number.  Curious, why is sharing the number publicly an issue for some?  The seller on eBay gave the number in the description.

I have both of these (I am a Portlander after all) and I was given the 2005 poster at the show.  Prior to the show some kid was seriously just handing them out (it was not Guy, I don't know who that lil' angel was).  But mine is not numbered.  Are others numbered?

Hmmmm....mine is not numbered.  I did not matte it when framed, it is exposed completely and there is no number.  So since I got it at the show that could mean there are more than 95 out there....
Or?

I wonder if this is anything like what happened in Portland, Maine in October.  There were two posters.  Both were 18 x 24 silkscreened prints in limited numbers.  A smaller, mass-produced version of the clipper ship poster was passed out to folks on their way out of the State Theatre.  So, I'm curious if there is a difference between the numbered Burwells from Portland, OR 2005 and the ones passed out for free, in terms of size, printing technique, etc.  Hmmm....

Yeah, a bit obsessive of me.   It started when I was trying to track one down- everyone I found that had one, even if they wouldn't sell (YOU, for ex) I would add to the list so at least I knew where they were.

Not everyone got one...he was just wandering around the theater with it.  Kind of funny story that we didn't realize it was free and admired it for sure but put our hands up like, sorry no cash.  We were with a girl from work and she reached for it and the dude then just smiled and walked away.  I promptly looked at her and pleaded my case for the poster.  She gave it to me  ::)
The printing quality of mine is top notch, not like the posters you get at the fillmore.  It has the gold ink and everything.  It has Guy's signature right under the lil' mice and is dated '05.  I think they are extras...I also think I may need to ask Guy in order to get to the bottom of this.
Title: Re: Posters
Post by: walterfredo on Dec 09, 2010, 11:30 AM
Wiz, it's not entirely uncommon for an artist to have unnumbered prints from a numbered run floating around or available at a different time. Jermaine Rogers comes to mind. Alot of his posters are sold at shows unnumbered and unsigned, and he'll later sell a signed/numbered edition via his website. I suspect all of the Alladin posters were printed at the same time...some given out at the show, numbered ones sold after the show, just a guess though. You could always email Guy and ask if he had any recollection. Is yours signed wiz?
Title: Re: Posters

Here is Guy's take:   (Guy had told me he had one, but I didn't know about the KC or the girlfriend, so that's 2 more for my list  :))

Yes, I was at the show, and I had a small stack of unnumbered promo prints that I was bringing to the club to post on their walls the night of the show, or to give to the office kids, or....something. I had four or five and I think and I gave a few out to people in line for the show. I usually have an overrun like all printers of a few prints with minor or major mistakes. Test prints in the printing process. I use those for taping to walls etc....I have a few of those at the studio, with like hand drawn type on them or bad registration. So I think that kid handing them out was probably me.  I probably grabbed the extras on my way out the door to give out to people. Wouldn't have been more than four or five.  SO THere are more than 95 in the world BUT probably not more than 105. I can tell you that #001 is in Kansas City in the hands of a non-collector type person, and #002 or #003 is at my studio most likely, the only  edition one I have. My girlfriend has one also and if she digs it out I will tell you the number at some later point.

Question:  Why would this poster, a "proof" by Slater and a great work, be offered for $600 on eBay?  Is it because its a "proof"?  Am I correct in assuming that means its an original pre-production print?

One more to share.  Thanks to the fellow forum peeps who, through questions, PMs, and emails, brought this to my attention.

Just two days after scoring two great Burwell prints, I found that my favorite, the '04 Burwell, was on eBay and snagged it for $50!  I always loved it, probably more than any other Burwell (possibly any other MMJ poster).  Two others of this particular poster are currently listed for $90 and $140.  Time to cool my jets and save up for some top-notch frames.

Artist proofs are prints that are run once the screen is set up perfectly but before the numbered run is created.    There are plenty of other prints created while the screen is being set up and they are usually called test prints, and contain flaws.   The artist proofs are considered the best possible quality, but in this day and age they are indistinguishable from the other prints.   They are still rare and trade at a signficant premium.

lots of info if you google artist print
for ex, http://www.astronautcentral.com/FAQ/AP.html is a decent explanation.

As far as that particular print, it is a very famous print, as you probably know (made into a t-shirt), and also fairly small production.   It's in the top 5 most collectable MMJ posters in my opinion and the fact that it's an A/P makes it very valuable.

That said, I think $600 is nutty.    The same seller has had that poster on ebay for over a year now, continually relisting.

I know this listing has been there for quite a bit and the seller should consider dropping the price since it hasn't seen much action.  The bidder does have a "make an offer" but who knows what they would actually take for it, and how much someone would actually pay for it.  I like the print but can't afford to drop $600 on a print at this time, not that i would.  Maybe someone who is interested in it should try to offer a low ball number and the seller might bite considering its been up there for a long while...not to mention it's the Holiday Season and people(seller) can always use some extra cash.

You're welcome!

That there looks like something mighty special.  Just a hunch.  Looks like its says Pinnacle Poster Co., FOH, MA followed by some numbers at the bottom.  Are those staple holes in the corners?  I'm guessing its a promo poster for the album, since there is no date or location.  Also, I doubt they played the album entirely until T5.  Take it to the Antiques Roadshow!  Nice find.

Yeah it was free,  I did some research and the numbers are the catalog number for the graphic.  It is a generic graphic with the lettering custom.  The pic is from the web but mine looks to be in about the same condition, staple holes and all.  I assume some of these may have been stapled to telephone poles?

CC any idea how many of these were available?  Were they sold or just for marketing.  Please tell me this is the first MMJ poster ever!  If not oh well I am too stoked to have something from the 90's.  I will never put this up for sale regardless.

Interesting.  First MMJ poster.  Hmmm.  And probably pretty rare.  I mean, how many people were thinking, in 1999, "hey, I should pull that li'l poster down and hang on to it for the next decade."  Hell, a ton of telophone pole promo posters for the Essex Jct. show are on eBay right now, curious to see what they fetch.  It probably wasn't a good idea to post about 10 at the same time.  To have one from the beginning of MMJ's career is pretty sweet.  I'd love to see the other 3 designs.  Having the set would be killer.

I hear you.  As there doesn't seem to be any kind of poster from the Newport Folk Festival that took place a couple of days later, which I DID attend, this might serve as a great substitute.

Johnny I forgot to mention that they was a Newport Folk Festival poster but it did not list the bands on it.  There were signed poster for more, as well as unsigned posters.  I believe it was light navy blue with an ship anchor as the design.  While i was at the merchandise table looking for a shirt this lady purchased one and showed it to me, she had wanted it because she was from Rhode Island and that the anchor is also on the Rhode Island State flag.  All i know about the artist is that he was a student at Rhode Island School of Design(RISD) in Providence.  Hope that might be of some use to you Johnny.

Johnny, the poster trend is getting way popular,  soon you will have to camp out to get one.  Especially if word gets out that a famous artist did the work.  Let's just hope the ones that want to hang em' on the wall will get em' and the one's reselling for profit will miss out.

It does need to be sticky though, there are multiple poster threads from the past.  I like to revert back to them but have trouble finding them sometimes.  I really enjoy seeing people being proud of their mmj artwork.

From a suitcase to boxes of merchandising, "Merchandising, Merchandising, Merchandising" (sorry had to add that small quote from Space Balls the movie) thats just the smell of success on the that poster you have from their first tour.  Nice find at a garage sale, and free at that.  Glad you found it cause the people having the sale were most likely going to throw it out if it wasn't taken(assuming that because it was free).

QuoteFrom a suitcase to boxes of merchandising, "Merchandising, Merchandising, Merchandising" (sorry had to add that small quote from Space Balls the movie) thats just the smell of success on the that poster you have from their first tour.  Nice find at a garage sale, and free at that.  Glad you found it cause the people having the sale were most likely going to throw it out if it wasn't taken(assuming that because it was free).

Actually it was a friend of my Dad's garage it wasn't a sale of any kind I just seen it and asked about it.  A little convincing was all it took.  but yeah it definately would have been tossed eventually.  House to garage to garbage.  I found it in the nick of time.

For those who went to the Vermont show in August, there are 7 copies on eBay of a promo poster using artwork from the Reno poster from the Columbus, OH show.  Note the staple holes.  The starting bid on all 7 is 99 cents, plus $5.99 shipping.  I've bid on one, so if others want to snag one of the remaining 6, feel free.  Let's try to not outbid each other.  I think getting seven forum members to bag this for $6.98 is reasonable.  Possibly overpriced, but...

Well, they finally arrived, so it wasn't a dream after all.  Crazy, though, that the guy sent both Burwells, worth maybe $500, in a tube with paper taped over the ends instead of plastic caps!  Yikes!  Kinda goes with selling these babies for $170.

(I figured I'd forgo the frames and just put 'em on my fridge using my kids' magnetic alphabet)  ;)

Dennis King (D. King Gallery) is an old school poster guy, been on the scene for decades.  His prices tend to be a bit inflated, but most galleries are.  I would recommend keeping an eye on Ebay and expressobeans.  In fact, looks like there are some for sale by expressobeans members for far less than $150

http://www.expressobeans.com/members/detail.php/14314/trades

probably have to create an account to access that part of the site though.

also, just noticed you can still buy it directly from Diesel Fuel prints (original printer of the poster) for $75.

The '04 Burwell's six-month average selling price is $123.27, according to Expresso Beans.  And finding mint, signed and numbered copies for $75 makes this a no brainer.

For questions about posters, I'm not your guy.  I'm new to the game and just got lucky recently.  I'd recommend you post questions here and listen closely to mahg33tah and walterfredo.

Does anyone know if there is a poster floating around from the 11.30.06 show at roseland in NYC ?  It was our first show and I would love to get one if there is one to be had.

Thanks.

I've been sick and just sitting around all day today. I've spent the last hour looking at Burwell art. I can't really find it on his site, but does he do non-band art and sell it? I would love to get my hands on just some good looking art for my new place. Any suggstions for other artists would be cool to, but Burwell's is BEAUTIFUL. He did a print for lost that I'm going to get off ebay soon enough. It's awesome.

tdb - there isn't a poster shown on the set list archive. do you know a link or anything to what it looks like? it sure would make finding one easier.

There is no such poster listed on expressobeans, so it's unlikely there was one.

Guy does do some art prints (non band stuff) but not too much, and most are originals and not prints.  Contact him and ask him, he's usually pretty good at responding.

The number of amazing artists out there is almost infinite!  Most of the artists I have stuff from in my collection stems from my addiction to poster/rock art, but a lot of them make art prints as well.  some of my favorite artists that I have in my collection...

That poster is a bit of a mystery to me.   It's listed on Cricket Press but it's never gone up for sale, and I've checked most days.   It said "not yet available" for about a month and then a few weeks ago it switched to "unavailable".   But not "sold out" like the T5 poster.   I emailed them last week and haven't gotten a response.    It's one of 2 posters I need to complete my 2010 collection...

Hey magh33ta, I emailed them a while back and here's the response I got in regard to the Halloween poster:

Unfortunately we are not going to be able to make any of these posters available through our website as we had hoped. We wanted to make sure we kept everyone who was interested informed in the event that we got a batch of them to sell, but that has not turned out to be the case. We apologize that they will not be available from us on cricket-press.com.

So unfortunately it doesn't look like they'll be available through Cricket Press. In an earlier email they told me they were responsible for the design only and that they were printed elsewhere.

I've been checking eBay since the show and haven't seen any come up. Such a grrrreat show - I want the poster!

Bummer you didn't get one.  I was really surprised it was such a small run (160) I think for such a large crowd.  I almost missed out on the 08 riverfront show, every since I bee line straight to the merch table.  The yum yum poster is really nice in person, not the standard 18 x 24 but definitely worth having.  Original run of 55 but I believe they have made more available for order.

Hey, Eric, I got the same poster from the same seller a few weeks ago and its all good!  The poster is beautiful in person, with some nice gold "foil" ink, and was in great condition, well packaged.  Slow shipping, but you can't beat the shipping fee (free).  I was curious to see 2 of the same poster from the same seller, but I'm convinced they're legit copies.  I don't recall what number I got, but let me know if you're not fully satisfied.  The seller lives in my in-laws' town of Plainfield, Il, so I can send my 6'5" father-in-law out to kick ass if needed.   ;D

I actually bought this print from Lonestar Posters a couple years back.  I can vouch for them and the poster.  They were the only place I could find that sold them.  It's a very nice print in person (as are all Clinton Reno posters).  Lonestar was quick with the shipment and easy to work with.  Plus it's only $25 + shipping.  Well worth it in my opinion.  It may not be worth much now but I have a feeling that will be different in a couple of decades.  Time will tell...

The Fillmore hands out free posters to all attendees at most shows as they leave the building.  This is one of those posters.  They are not silk screened, so that is probably why they are not considered particularly valuable.  Still, it's very cool that you get a free souvenir of the show with the price of admission.

I come across that poster sometimes at Rasputin Records, which is a chain of independent record stores (yeah, I know that sounds oxymoronic) in the Bay Area.  They sell extras of Fillmore posters in their stores.

There were two different designs for the free posters for the NYE '06 Fillmore shows:  one for the 29th and 30th, and one for NYE.  There is also a Fillmore poster for MMJ's show in 2004 where M. Ward opened.

They gave out smaller, non-silkscreened versions of a poster at Portland, ME this October, too.  There was a full-sized, silkscreen version of it, as well.  Also, Madpixel did another poster, so I have three different posters from that show.

I was debating posting what I paid.  The Slater was $200 (framed), the Fung $25 (original price was $30), and the 2007 Burwell was $70.  All on eBay in the past 24 hours.

200 is a hell of a lot better than the 600$ one that was up forever. I hear ya though spending a lot. I've had many times that I knew I didn't wanna spend the money I did on a burwell, but i just "couldn't let it get away"
Yeah, that $600 Slater is down to $400 now, I think.  Its an artist proof, which increases value (yes?).  Nope, its still $600.

Just snagged one of 2 remaining Burwell's to almost complete my Burwell/MMJ/Portland collection, the 2007.  Only 2003 remains.

Also picked up the Fung Berkeley 2008

and perhaps most importantly the Slater 2005 Boulder

YYacMaster,

Kinda funny that you picked up the Burwell/Slater combo.  I also picked up both of those prints last month and oddly enough paid almost exactly the same as you did.  And to top it off, I recently got the Guy Burwell At Dawn T5 and the Clinton Reno Tennessee Fire T5 poster.  It has been an expensive couple of months but I have to feed this addiction.   Money well spent in my mind.  Their values are only going to keep going up.  Although I never plan on selling them so that doesn't really do me much good.

highly debatable.  Personally, I'd much rather have a #'d edition than an A/P these days.  Artists, imo, seem to be taking advantage of the whole A/P thing in recent years...they seem to no longer serve their original intention....as an artist's proof, and are now simply a away to increase the run size a bit and for an artist to squeeze out a few more dollars from a print run.  Obviously this isn't the case with all artists.  A/P's just don't seem to be as rare or cool as they were once thought of.  I like my #'d prints.

Its a tough time to make a living no matter who you are, so I can't blame the artists for doing this. Personally, I'd rather have the s/n print if I was at the show, but I wouldn't mind buying an AP if I'm only buying it because I like the art (which I've done on a few occasions).

I am pretty sure that's a promoter poster promoting the event, not a poster sold at the concert.   That said, I plan to buy it because I haven't seen it before.   There are already 2 other posters for that night (both in expresso beans) so it'll be the second show for which I have 3 posters (8/18 KC being the other).

2. what are some websites that sell gig posters. I can't think of the name of one... its not expresso, gigposters, or diesel...

All of the T5 posters have been tough and expensive to get (Especially At Dawn & The Tennessee Fire posters.)  I have had luck in the past contacting the artist directly (Randy Fung for the Evil Urges poster) but I think he only had a small supply that sold out quickly.  It looks like one is for sale here (I think you have to register an account) but I imagine you will have to cough up some hefty dough to get it....

It would have been funny if we all responded "Fuck off, loser!" or some such.   ;D

You're right, amskinz.  MMJ fans are cool by nature due to their superb taste in music.

I was collecting Burwell's MMJ Portland posters and couldn't find the '03 to save my life.  Out of desperation, I emailed Guy and he had one!  AND he sold it to me for $10!  So I'd drop R. Fung a line pronto.  Worst that could happen is he says, "sorry, sold out."  I haven't emailed him before, but Clinton Reno, Burwell, and Brandon Jones have been very cool to deal with.  We pay their salary because we love their work.  They have good reason to be cool to us.

anyway, welcome to the forum, amskinz.

I emailed Cricket Press earlier this week but it says they're on break for the month or something, but I assume it will be the same.

Hey amskinz welcome to the forum, like someone else mentioned that there is a T5 Randy Fung EU poster available on expressobeans but sure the person wants a pretty penny cause another person whom i sold the T5 Z poster too had tried to contact them but they were asking too much for them.  Wish i had an extra to spare but Randy is a really nice person and it can't hurt to try him.  You can contact him through his email at irfung @ aol.com.  He did the most recant MMJ bonnaroo poster for them.  Hope this is of some help to you.

I was wondering if a few shows I attended ever had show posters for sale...

JazzFest 2 years ago - day show... or Late Night @ Preservation Hall.. was at both, but don't remember seeing any prints available.

Also, this is a long shot..... 2006-11-22 Louisville Gardens - Louisville, KY ...it was the night before Thanksgiving show.

Ouch.  But, y'know, they're his to do with as he wishes.  You can spend $20-$200 to frame these posters, or use the money to buy more posters.  Its the frames that are killing my overspent poster budget.  I've used Michaels for glass-metal frames, but also used Craig Frames (via Amazon) (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_home-garden?_encoding=UTF8&node=1055398&field-brandtextbin=Craig#/ref=sr_st?bbn=1055398&qid=1313256032&rh=n%3A1055398%2Cp_4%3ACraig%2Cp_6%3AA2COXGHER2MRD%2Cp_36%3A1253523011%2Cp_72%3A1248915011&sort=reviewrank_authority) for decent plexiglas-plastic frames.

You might direct him to Craig Frames.  With combined shipping its still pricey for 6 prints, but a lot better than push pins.  I suppose its too late, though, huh?  :-\

i hear ya with the framing. I have like 8 posters hung up, only two of which were custom framed. i really want to get the rest framed right, because i don't want anything to happen to em (especially my pearl jam burwell) but i just can't afford it. I think i'm going to wait til I move out of this apartment and into a more permanent place and decide which ones are going to be hung up forever and which ones arent.

i'm pretty sure this friend doesn't even know (and definitely doesn't care) theres an entire world of gig art out there, so no harm done for him.

I'm all about the cheap poster frames. I want them out where people can see them, but don't have the $$$ to custom frame each one. And archivally speaking, if you really want to preserve your posters, you will not frame them at all, but keep them in folders, in a box, out of direct light. But that's no fun, so to each his own.

yeah, I have been picking up posters at shows I've attended and have some that I have traded with people for and I have realized that I have far more than I will ever frame.  I frame 2-3 each year and spend a long time deciding which ones will get picked for hanging.  I have the one from Mountain Park, Holyoke last year in a cheap frame from Michaels (because it fit), but want it under UV glass and archivalally framed so I suspect that it and the one from this evening will be the next two to be framed.

Great finds and even though it is a KOL it's still a Burwell.  And also nice job in finding the "It Still Moves"  T5 poster for a trade, now you just missing the "At Dawn" or are you still searching for others from T5?

if you are talking about this

I would say $75-$100 ish.   It's pretty rare, got a good story (event that never happened), and I believe all were signed by Jimmy.    If anything that quote is on the high side, but they don't turn up too often.

The gods smiled upon me once again, as I scored another Burwell well under its value ($64 incl. shipping from London).

From expresso beans? Someone from England messages me about my ISO and offered me the RCMH NYC Burwell for 90$ TOTAL. Unfortunately, I wasn't quick enough to respond, and someone else grabbed it.

It was an eBay listing, from a search of "Guy Burwell", listed  below and separate from the other listings because it was a listing from outside the US.  It started at .99 British Pounds (GBP), I max-bidded at 45 GBP, couldn't watch it at work (blocked), but managed to survive 10 bids, closing at what amounted to $64 USD (shipping included).

I got a PM on Expresso Beans from a dude in England re: this Burwell Red Rocks '08, but I don't know if it was the same thing.  I'm thinking it was, as the guy on EB and the guy on eBay are both photographers, from what I can tell.

I was watching that one too, it start at $1.60 US dollars and it didn't have a bid for a few days and was thinking of buying cause it still had no bids so i firgured to wait for the last day and saw that it had a few more bids so i held off.  Glad that you were able to purchase that one Johnny.  Was thinking about buying but have the Newsprint edition and the edition of it on Watercolor paper not to mention a terrible poster and print habit.  Saw that the same seller had the RCMH for sale so i contacted them but they mentioned that it was the 2nd edition so i decided not to buy.  They actually had it on ebay at first but then took it off most likely cause they made a deal on Expresso Beans.  Seemed like a nice guy, told me he was trying to gather some funds for some prints he was after.  Same seller had this nice Chuck Sperry print for the movie the Royal Tenenbaums, it ended up selling for about a third of its original price which was $200.  It was a huge print and a nice piece of artwork.

I realize this isn't related to MMJ but I wasn't really sure where else to put this.

Here's a pretty cool time lapse of an Explosions in the Sky poster being made. (It's also my favorite all time non-MMJ poster!) Check it out

QuoteYeah it was free,  I did some research and the numbers are the catalog number for the graphic.

I will never put this up for sale regardless.

they were sold at the shows. i'll make a photo of the entire set when i get a chance. they were probably the first posters. not sure how many were around, not too many i guess, everything had to fit in one suitcase, posters, tshirts, cds, snacks, bananas, oranges...

Any chance you could post that photo, CC?

Thanks for your concern, guys.  I assure you I did not pay $300 for this.  There is a seller on eBay with a few variants of the Spusta print, but I opted for the tan variant and negotiated for a price below the original $148 he was asking.  The listings on Expresso Beans are 6 months old and for about what I paid.  This wasn't originally high on my list of must-haves, but timing is everything.  I have a feeling seeing it in person will give me a poster woody!

 :bath:

In fact, let's see 'er again...
