the band - The Band
That's actually eleven and still miss led zep, MC5, Stooges, Stones, Springsteen, Dylan, Elvis, Otis Redding...
Just too much good stuff.
A truly great album is a work of art to be played in its entirety, not merely a collection of singles (which is what most are these days, thanks in part to downloading). With that in mind, I'll throw out two of the tightest, most cohesive, albums I've ever heard:
The Problem With Me, by Seam
Mouthfuls, by Fruitbats
(and about a dozen live MMJ shows from the FTP server)
Toadies - Rubberneck
Coldplay - Yellow
APC - Mer De Norms
Tool - Aenima ( Such a hard decision with Undertow )
DMB - Under the table and dreaming
Metallica - And justice for all
Blur - Think Tank
Nickel Creek - This Side
Queens of the Stone Age - Queens of the Stone Age
Queens of the Stone Age = Rated R
If I had another spot QOTSA Songs for the deaf would be my #11. I would have liked to put Weezer's blue album and Sublime's self titled album on there as well...but they just didnt stack up with everything else.
( I know it wasn't specified...but I left out most stuff pre 90's. ) Pink Floyd/The Doors/Jimi Hendrix and many others just make things unfair. So I went with stuff I grew up on.
Damn...a Fruit Bats album. I prefer Echolocation though.
These threads should always be made easier by making it "Top Ten Albums besides your Dark Side, White Album, Nevermind, etc". No offense to those who chose them.
Somewhere in my top ten lies J.J. Cale - "Troubador". I'll be the first to throw in MMJ - "At Dawn".

Yeah the good thing is that everyone usually has a couple that you've never heard that are awesome albums. I know I have some stuff to go check out now, Fruitbats, Big Star, etc. I also want to check out VHS or Beta because of some threads.
I think R.E.M.'s "Automatic For The People" goes high up on this list.
But, for me, it's an impossible task to figure it out.
Maybe Microphones' "The Glow Pt. 2" should be nr. 2????
Well, never mind, my head goes insane thinking about all this............
Television's "Marquee Moon" definitely has to have a spot on there, and maybe something by Captain Beefheart?

just to clarify...i didn't put mmj in my top ten just because it would be unfair. Their 3 albums would definately replace some in my top 10. It would be hard though...

Is dEUS still around?
In a Bar, Under the Sea is an excellent album. The first time I heard them was when they opened at a Morphine concert. I caught the very last song of their set (Theme from Turnpike) and that convinced me to buy the album right then and there.
Side note: the cover art for In a Bar, Under the Sea is one of my favorites.

yeah they're still around. think they just recorded a new one. worst case scenario is my favourite dEUS album. they're still brilliant but that one was just uhh more than brilliant.
Yep new album recorded. Titlealbum is yet unknown, but they did already some live shows just to warm things up.
You will hear more very soon. In a bar under the sea is also an excellent album. Check it out.
They're touring soon, October I think, there's four or five dates listed in the NME this week.

Can we make this a top 20? 10 is just too hard! I just remembered like 50 other desert island disk essentials.
Bengrim,
that's the second time I've run across the name John Martyn today. I guess this is someone I should probably know. Amazon compares him to Nick Drake, and AllMusic compares him to people I don't know. What do you have to say about him?
Scott
Personally I like 'In a bar' even more than 'WCS'. A friend of mine recently said: "The first dEUS album you've heard is your favorite dEUS album" and it appears to be true.
QuoteBengrim,

Scott
A lot of people compare him to Nick Drake but I personally find Nick Drake a little posh for my taste if you know what I mean but he's still perfect for a Sunday morning. John Martyn is a little more eclectic in a jazz sense, he use a lot of effects and isn't scared to switch genres. The man himself is a legend he's scottish/irish I believe but for a while in the 70's he lost his thick Glasgow accent and took on this keith moon style english gent voice, he's a raging alcoholic and last year had one his feet amputated and recorded his latest album('on the cobbles') from his bed!
Solid air is good place to start ( the title track is about Nick Drake, apparently they were friends)or there's a good Island 'introduction to..' compilation. Don't tell anyone as I don't want to jinx it, but friends of mine are working with his engineer Gary and he visited my studio last week, he loves our live room that much ( a disused cinema) that he wants to bring John in to do vocals and acoustic guitars! But keep it to yourself, wink wink.
Good call on Whiskeytown's Stangers Alamanac.....that is great disc. However, I can not stand Ryan Adams anymore. Also, like the Jeff Bucklye Grace disc.
D.

witness is no more? seriously?
before the calm is a masterpiece.
saw em live a coupla years ago. memorable show.
Went to Witness' last gig at the Borderline last December. Its criminal that they never made it bigger. Had a few photo opportunities with the guys and a few beers after, a real nice bunch...ive seen em a good few times over the years. Its only the name that will be no more..apparently Gerard will carry on under the solo name Gerard Starkie but Ray and the rest of the guys will still be the backing band. I just think they wanted a fresh approach and there was some sort of stigma attached to the name Witness. Im always on the web looking for new shows but there has been nothing since last December. I have sent Two Tone Tommy a copy of Before the Calm...so you never know they may get a support slot on the next MMJ tour...well we can all dream. Hopefully Gerard will carry on playing the old Witness tunes.
.What about Wigans Verve..see Ashcroft walking around much...now that is one band i wish stayed split up.I used to love the Verve, went to see them back in 92 in small venues all over London..50 people etc..Mad Richard was fantastic..all the singles and the first two albums were great ...Ashcroft had a real good spirit going on...They then split and were no more only for Oasis to stick their noses in and they reformed...it was never the same again..You started to find Beer Monsters and Lads at the gigs..typical Oasis fans..it was never the same..back in 94 i had a wonderful demo version of Drugs dont work...acoustic and raw...it made you weep. It then got to number one back in 97...crazy. Im not knocking them as they deserve success, but somehow the spirit was lost when they reformed. I remember going to see Oasis in Southend in 1995 (you can buy the gig dvd "live by the sea")and the Verve were supporting..we got to the gig early, for me it was more important to see Verve..Ashcroft flapped about the stage -Jim Style Shoeless..pouting and all boggly eyed...half the crowd were screaming get of you f'ing wierdo..crap etc..there was nearly a few fisty cuffs ...only words were exchanged in the end though. I bet half them people at that gig now own a copy of Urban Hymns...just because the Oasis brothers said go out and buy it...long live Witness...Long live Verve 91-95.
This is great I had no idea they were this popular! You're right they are a great bunch of lads, I spent many teenage Saturday afternoons in their practice room, oh the days.........I knew Gerard was still playing but Ray's brother thinks he may be off to Hong Kong to teach English for a while, lets hope he stays.
I know what you mean about the verve the early small gigs were amazing, 'A Northern Soul' is one of my favourite albums ever. I haven't seen Richard for a long time, I moved away from Wigan 10 years ago, a friend of mine (who used to play harmonica for Status Quo!) is now his manager and brought the band down to my club last time he played Liverpool but Richard didn't come. Nick is back from Spain and living in Bristol not far from the Witness boys in Bath, Ray and Nick were really good mates, if they were to jam now I'd pay to see that!
QuoteThis is great I had no idea they were this popular!
don't think they're that popular. there were only a handfull of people at that show back in uh, 1999 I think... and I never hear em on the radio or anything. anyway, they're great and good to hear Starkie is still makin music!

Witness - Before the calm
Hey, I have that album! Picked it out of a Sales bin once for 1 euro. Ehm... Yeah, it's got some nice tunes on it, but as a whole I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. Some songs are somewhat boring, I think. But maybe I should dust of my copy and give it another chance, if you're all so enthousiastic about it! :)
just an aside--the new ish of EW has "London Calling" as the greatest album of all time. I have mixed feelings about that, I really like that disc but it is not my #1. still a pretty good pick for a vanilla rag like them...

London Calling will make my list of 10 favorites. It might even make it to number 1. The other contenders are Every Picture Tells a Story, an MMJ and a Led Zeppelin album.
I need to ponder it a bit more to figure it out. I plan to listen to them all quite loudly this weekend while I work around the house, drink a Guinness or two, and resolve the matter peacefully and profoundly.
I don't think I saw one list with Appitite for Destruction on it which is insane! Rounding out the top ten:
The Wall- Floyd
Wish You were Here- Floyd
Parinoid- Sabbath
The Doors
And Justice For All- Metallica
Led Zepplin IV
Who Can You Trust- Morcheeba
The Number of the Beast- Iron Maiden
Pop- U2
Hon Mention: Crash- DMB, Rumors- F. Mac, Sad Wings of Destiny- J. Priest, Older, George Michael, anything by Sinatra, Coltrane, or Miles Davis

Just curious why The Tennessee Fire was demoted? It's likely to always be in my top 10, unless MMJ release 10 better ones.
And so you see how subjective music really is. One moment you hail to one cd the other moment another album is praised as never before.

O: What do think of the new Fruscainte stuff that has been pouring out the past 4 months?
My list raised a lot of questions, I see... :)
First of all, 'The Tennessee Fire', well, I think I forgot that one. You know how it goes, you're so into some new albums you bought that the old ones kinda slip out of your mind.. One of those was the Leonard Cohen album. I don't think I'll like the live album better, however, 'cuz I'm usually not that thrilled by live albums. Plus, I so absolutely adore the last couple of minutes of 'Songs', with Leonard yelling like a drunk guy in the back... :)
About the Frusciante albums. I have three of his 2004 albums. Shadows collide with people has some great songs, but is a little too polished and over-arranged. The will to death is one of my favorite albums of this year. Then came the Ataxia record, wich I thought was, well, absolute crap. Some guys jamming in a garage, and for some reason (probably because they're famous and think everyhting they do is genius) they release it. I hate that album. And I hate it so much that it squashed my eagerness to hear the other albums. But I'll buy them someday, I guess.
By the way, if I'd make a new list today, I'd put either 'Six and six' or 'Somebody in the snow' by Jandek in it... And the debut album by the fascinating Dutch artist Spinvis. And, yes, 'The Tennessee Fire'. :)
Try "Live Seeds" from Nick Cave, and his great dvd/video's like "Live at the Paradiso" or, anyway, "The Road to God knows where".
However, being a Cave-fan, I hardly can believe he has done anything wrong............................

I think "Chronic Town" is REM's best.
I had the privilege of seeing R.E.M. on the Lifes Rich Pageant Tour and it was by far and away the best R.E.M. show I ever saw. I was at the U. of Oregon in a venue that held no more than 200 people and it rocked. Saw them on the Monster tour and wondered why I even like this band.
D.
Life's Rich Pageant is good, sure. But it ain't Fables of the Reconstruction (of the).
Well, we'll never sort it out, I suppose. :)
Now, we've had 6 pages of lists and changing lists and arguing over lists, perhaps it's interesting to debate over this question: What criteria do you use to make a list of top ten albums of all time? I tend to put albums in it that mean a lot to me personally, even though I understand that perhaps those albums might not be that interesting to others. How do you do it? Do you try to be as objective as possible? Do you just want albums to rock? Thoughts, please... :)
To whom it may concern.
I agree that Life's Rich Pageant is R.E.M.s best work. Next in line Reckoning.

WOw O....that is a tough one. To be honest, picking ten discs is pretty much an impossilbility. Moods, time of day, where you are, etc can all have an influence on your decsion making and I think it is no different in picking discs. In addition, what have you been listening to recently has to have some affect. There is no doubt I could change my list on a daily basis. Ultimately, I am glad that I don't have to once and for all pick those ten discs.
