i know this article was posted in the music section, but this link has two more paragraphs of MMJ info, which i have italicized for easy spotting (also i think this is originally a Billboard article)!
Creative booking has helped build My Morning Jacket's rep as one of the premier live rock bands on the touring scene. Last year was supposed to be a light year for the band (with only a handful of dates reported to Boxscore), but the gigs the group did play were high-profile.
''We were lucky enough to be invited to play three shows with Bob Dylan at Red Rocks and Telluride, as well as Lollapalooza with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Austin City Limits Festival,'' said the band's manager, Mike Martinovich, who said the live year came to a ''euphoric'' end when MMJ played this year's Bridge School Benefit.
MMJ just finished recording its next studio album in New York with frontman Jim James and Joe Chiccarelli (the White Stripes, the Shins) co-producing. The band hopes for a June release, then will tour in the United States, as well as the United Kingdom and Europe.
The band will perform at this year's South by Southwest event in Austin, Texas, for the first time since 2002, and James will do an acoustic show in addition to the full-band set. Other U.S. dates are being booked.
On a panel at the Billboard Touring Conference last November, talent buyer Charles Attal of C3 Presents (Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits) named MMJ as a band that could break big in 2008. ''My Morning Jacket has just great songwriting, great hooks and an overall sound that translates live,'' Attal said.
so Jim will play an acoustic set at SXSW....this must be seen!!!

for sure!!!
Based on a June release, that means nice warm to hot weather when they roll through town! That makes me feel all tingly inside. They've here here in November the last few times. I love a good summer concert.
Perhaps this is a dumb question (Note- My First Post), but has MMJ ever toured with horns at all?
I've only seen them three times (One of the times being this summer at Lollapalooza) and I thought they sounded extremely tight with the Orchestra, especially on the Mayfield cover. I'm just curious if this is something they've done before.
I know they did the whole boston pops thing (my friend who caught them on that tour said it was to much sound), but I was curiously if they ever just had horns.
Here's to hopefully more Curtis Mayfield covers, although I'm convinced anything Jim sings ends up being good.
They have never done a full tour with horns. However, on the last tour, Elvis Perkins and his band Deerland opened up for them on several west coast dates. At least a few times that I know of, they came out with horns for Easy Morning Rebel and Dancefloors. I think it was LA, Anaheim, Denver and Portland maybe??? Someone else can probably help me remember.

NYE also!

I agree. There's something about a summer show that makes you feel perpetually 17 years old - in a good way. :)
Thanks for the news.
Awesome news! :)
I'm hoping the first show after the album drops is at Bonnaroo.

What Curtis Mayfield covers have they done? I'm a little behind. But this is exciting, Curtis is my HERO. Amazing Man

Makes PERFECT sense to me!
i'm guessing MMJ will be showcasing new tunes at SXSW?

I would think so.
They certainly wouldn't think of skipping Carl's home town. Fingers crossed.
looks like 2008 is shaping up to be a big year for the boys...
play conan or letterman the night before Radio City Music Hall...
it would make sense for them to play Bonnaroo this year (if Bonnaroo doesn't try to f*ck them with low pay and a crappy stage) since it conincides with the release of the album.
it would also make sense to play Lollapalooza again...as bands with new records get way more buzz at festivals (and radio, magazines, etc.).
i'm thinking they will do a U.S. tour maybe starting in mid-May or early June and run through August/Sept. then maybe hit Europe (and other places) in the Fall. then bring back the "annual" thanksgiving show in Louisville...
any other predictions?
the roo, Which Stage, midnight Saturday, same slot as the Lips had last year.
see you there?
Coachella, Sat, Outdoor Stage, same slot as the Good The Bad And The Queen last year.
PLEASE COME TO COACHELLA!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!
Lollapalooza, Friday night headliner, same stage and time as Ben Harper last year.
I've been checking in on this forum pretty obsessively since the news broke earlier in the week, and am anxiously looking forward to tomorrow morning, and trying to get some tickets to the RCMH show. Over the past few days, I've come back to this thought several times: how excited must the band be? They've taken the time to write and record an(other) undoubtedly brilliant album, and 2008 will be spent supporting and sharing that creation with us, their fans. I can't think of a more exciting year!

Rolling Stone considers MMJ to be a "big band" and one of the "must see" sets of SXSW.
obviously, this is info we already knew, but for them to be considered a "big band" by the maintstream media's biggest music magazine...
so are the boys on the verge of stardom?
if so, do those of you who have heard the new album believe the new songs will push them over the edge into fame?
A better question may be: do we WANT them to reach that level of stardom? They are definitely getting more prealbum hype than ever. and the way they sold out RCMH, opened for Dylan at Red Rocks, all things point to the boys reaching yet another level of the rock n roll pecking order. Jim always said he just wanted to be able to make music for a living. He's reached that goal, now how far is he going to push it?
I don't know. I don't want them to be U2-level stars, but at the same time I want them to be remembered as "classic rock". But when it comes down to it, there is no other band that truly deserves to break big as much as this one. God knows they deserve it.

in a selfish way...i think most of us would not want them to reach super-stardom. otherwise, there will be no more hometown solo Jim shows, standing room only venues, and all the things we love about them being a "mid-level" rock band. however, i know we all want them to be really successful so they can continue to concentrate on making music and not have to worry about paying bills.
i think Jim probably has the ability to write "hit" songs, but does he want to?
