As a Kentucky transplant, it took me almost twenty years to develop a taste for the brownest of the liquors. Now that the "bourbon and water" bug has bit me, I can't even drink a beer without getting somewhat queasy.
Here's some of my favorite brands...what's yours? :)
Elijah Craig 12 yr old Single Barrel, 94 proof
Knob Creek
Maker's Mark
Bulleit's
Buffalo Trace
Add Old Grandad to your rather sweet list of bourbons! I particulary like Knob Creek, for the name as much as for the taste!
Have to agree with you on MM and Knob Creek. I have an unopened bottle of finest Knob Creek sitting on my shelf, just waiting for the moment to present itself for me to dive in...
I finally found a bar that served Knob Creek a couple of weeks ago, and was SO pleased. MMmmmm. Maker's Mark is great. I've also enjoyed Elmer T. Lee.
Not crazy about Jim Beam, really don't like Jack Daniels. (I mean, if there's nothing else it'll do, but if there's a choice...)
And if it's a bit of a wild night, I'll take some turkey. (Generally regret it, though.)
I'm looking forward to learning more... :)
woodford reserve
old rip van winkle 10 year
pappy van winkle 20 year
it is rare that there is not a bottle of woodford reserve around the house. its what i drink when im playing shows or recording vocals. keeps the vocal chords nice a primed for action.

I have a fondness for Old Crow. Gentleman Jack on ice isn't bad either. But Makers Mark is probably my favorite.
The expensive stuff is good...but for all around value and taste, I'd have to vote for Jim Beam Black. I mean, come on. It's made in Kentucky!!

Old crowe or jim beam
but really,I like them all.

Ah, the mystery...
if it ain't made in Kentucky, in an oak charred barrel, it is NOT bourbon, but rather "whiskey". 99% of bourbon is made in kentucky...

Jim Beam black IS surprisingly good.
Buffalo Trace is the bes I've ever tasted. But I don't turn up my nose to any bourbons.
Damn, we don't have all that bourbon over here, I wanna try them! All we have is Jack Daniels :(
Jack Daniels isn't bourbon, it's tennesse whiskey. The best buy for those of us from the 'ville is W.H. Weller. It is as good as Makers and Woodford and a lot cheaper.
So Jack Daniel's isn't bourbon, why not? What makes a bourbon a bourbon? Explain you specialists!
In order for it too be considered bourbon at least 51% of it must have been originated from corn. It must be aged in Oak barrels and it must be at least 4 years old. It is not necessary that it be produced in Kentucky, however, most bourbon comes from Kentucky because the whole state sits atop a layer of limestone. For some reason, the "limestone" water of Kentucky makes the best bourbon. I've only seen two bourbons that weren't made in Kentucky, one from Tennesse and one from South Carolina, I don't remember their names and I didn't try any of them because Kentucky bourbon is where it's at.
Y'all. I drank a knob creek in Louisville last night and toasted all of you KY's. :)
It was beautiful. I got to smoke, too.
Gosh I can't believe I missed this topic earlier! I love Knob Creek bourbon and Early Times whisky.... found Makers too stiff for my Yankee tastes....
Jack Daniels is THE best whiskey, bourbon,it,s even the best vodka, thats how good it is.
I'm sure this will piss people off, but I think Jack Daniels is total shit.... it has a famous name but the product doesn't deliver. Much like people blow a load for Absolute vodka, despite their being dozens of better choices... sour mash whiskey is terrible...
So, as was mentioned in another topic, VHS or Beta played over here in Utrecht a couple of weeks ago. In between two songs the singer started to talk about Kentucky. "We're from Louisville in Kentucky. Any of you drink Bourbon? Kentucky is like the only place in the world Bourbon is made!" Absolute silence. "Okay, so none of you give a damn about Bourbon..."
Then, as the band was already beginning with the next song: "There's another band from Louisville called My Morning Jacket, does anyone know them?" About ten people cheered enthousiastically.
;D

NY Times did a blind taste test of all the fancy, pricey new vodkas, and they threw in Smirnoff just on a lark. Smirnoff won, hands down.
QuoteI'm sure this will piss people off, but I think Jack Daniels is total shit.... it has a famous name but the product doesn't deliver.
You're not pissing me off, I think you're absolutely right. I think Old Forrester tastes better than Jack Daniels and it is half the price. I think that people who have always drank Jack Daniels just think that whiskey is suppose to taste like shit. Ask anyone in the bourbon capital of the world and they'll tell you that Jack is shit and point you in the direction of dozens of Kentucky bourbons that put Jack to shame.

Not to absolutely piss off any JD drinkers out there, but Jack Daniels tastes like ostrich turds blended with sour buttermilk compared to the plethora of bourbons offered right here in Kentucky. Kinda like comparing Milli Vanilli to Pavoratti.
Glad some of your agree with me... not being from Kentucky, I'm sur some of you know of bourbon/whiskys I havn't had that are great... JD sucks though
As for Smirnoff winning a vodka competition- is it that suprising... thing of the average vodka drinker... I think Miller Light would win a beet tasting at a frat house but that means nothing considering the clientel...

I came home to an angry cat, a very very hot apartment, a crazy moth outbreak in my room and a rejection letter for a recording grant.
Why did I come home?

Or fuck it, maybe I'll just have to run down to Kentucky every time the bottle is done.

Yes, but you would certainly kill a lot of germs with the alcohol. :) From the inside and the outside. heh.

But just a few years ago, there was some scandal about selling celebrity bath water on ebay that was taken from hotel drains. Plus, there is always the typical guy quote of "she's so beautiful, I'd drink her bath water."
Then a famous actress too....you could become a hot commodity.

Doesn't the killing of germs usually involve a slight burning situation? I'm thinking a bath of Beam would produce some unusual howls from the tub.

Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin explained the "Buffalo Theory" to his buddy, Norm...
"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.!
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of
alcohol, as we know, kill brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.
More from Norm!
5. SAM : What'll you have, Norm?
NORM : Well I'm in a gambling mood, Sammy. I'll have a glass of whatever comes out of that tap.
SAM : Oh, Looks like beer, Norm.
NORM : Call me Mister Lucky.
6. WOODY: Hey Mr. Peterson, there's a cold one waiting for you.
NORM : I know, and if she calls, I'm not here.
18. SAM : What's new, Norm?
NORM : Terrorists, Sam. They've taken over my stomach and they're demanding beer.
25. SAM : What's the story, Norm?
NORM : Boy meets beer. Boy drinks beer. Boy meets another beer.
27. SAM : How's life treating you, Norm?
NORM : It's not, Sammy, but you can.
35. WOODY: How's it going, Mr. Peterson?
NORM : Poor.
WOODY: I'm sorry to hear that.
NORM : No, I mean pour.
my all-time favorite line from cheers is:
Norm: Woman--can't live with them... pass the beer nuts.

for my birthday, the wife and I went to a restaurant that had an extensive selection. Ended up sipping on these:

My wife said she ordered me a bottle of bourbon and I am really excited for that. Any other bourbon enthusiasts on the boards?

JK... since Forecastle a few years ago we love to drink Four Roses, single barrel.
And a few years ago I was turned on to Elijah Craig, which for the money, is a great deal. It's pretty tasty.

WL Weller is the same distillate as pappy. Julian Van Winkle III (Pappy's grandson), hand selects his favorite barrels of the Weller 12 YO and that becomes Pappy.
Makers, Old Fitzgerald, Larceny, Rebel Yell, Cabin Still are all wheated bourbons as well.
The base Weller product is easily the best on the list when you consider that its less than 20 bucks.

all the best Distillery tours, imo, are not in Louisville. The only one in town is Evan Williams, and its more like Epcot than a distillery. My favorite distilleries are Buffalo Trace (hard hat tour) and Wild Turkey, although you have to drive 30 or 45 minutes to get to them. I work at a distillery, but none of the ones I named here, so I'm not biased.
A brandy distillery just opened up in Louisville called Copper and Kings, which is supposed to be pretty cool.
just, for all that is right in the world, don't waste your time or money at Woodford. Its a joke and a complete farce.
picked up a bottle of Filibuster
(http://filibusterbourbon.com/wp-content/uploads/bourbon-bottle-forweb.png)
It's decent, strong upfront with a strong oak flavor (that's the double cask). Better once it breathes. With enough quality bourbons out there, it might be awhile before I buy again.
Buffalo Trace is my staple and Woodford when I want to splurge. Also don't mind Four Roses and of course Makers but it's over priced. I guess I should give Elijah Craig a try.....
Old Scout Smooth Ambler was my surprise find this year. A really solid bourbon at a good price. I've also got a bottle of Stagg Jr. and Angels Envy in the cabinet.. The Stagg is solid, but have to be careful with it, it's stronger than most. Another fave this year is the Michters Rye. Not a bourbon but similar and really good.

Larceny is Old Fitzgerald aged longer. Its moving in and taking over as Heaven Hills premium wheat. Good info if you wanna get nerdy enough to do some vertical tasting and see how aging and maturation changes the juice.
If you want a value wheat, just grab Weller. Cheaper/better. Larceny and Old Fitz are good, but Weller is kind of a miracle of a value.

I read this yesterday. It rules. " It was Diageo's Blade & Bow, and I immediately sighed, giving an "oh XXXX" expletive." I wish I didn't know what he meant as well as I do.
I wasn't aware/still am not sure that Blade and Bow had been announced to the public yet, but its going to be good. The Diageo/Stitzel-Weller team has already brought IW Harper back to the states, and now B&B. Its been a good first 4 months of 2015 for the company's bourbons (and the consumer!). Say what you will about Diageo, but you can't be mad at them for rapidly releasing excellent bourbons these days. Lost Prophet gets a Double Gold in what I'm assuming is a 20+ Y.O. category.
my wife ordered the Parker's Heritage Promise of Hope 10-Year-Old Single Barrel Bourbon from our state ABC store and waited for more than a month. They called her to say it was in and when she went to pick up she got the 2014 Heritage release:
I've never had wheat whiskey before and I've only been able to have one glass, but it certainly has a distinctly different profile from bourbon (even wheated bourbons) and its not just the higher proof. I'm happy to add some variety to the whiskey cabinet and look forward to having some more soon.

Old Grand Dad has a special spot in my heart. OGD was at one time one of the highest regarded distilleries in the country, but was purchased (as a brand) at some point and became a bottom shelf product (most old brands do that, and its purely marketing by the new big guys). As far as cheap bourbon goes, its excellent. It's going through some changes right now, but its well, well worth the money. OGD is the same as Old Fitz B.I.B. and Weller to me. Just cause its insanely cheap doesn't mean its bad. My monday night ritual includes going to a bar where OGD is the Monday shot of the day, so I assume I'll be drinking a lot of that in the very, very near future.
There are gigantic whiskey nerds who purchase very old, still sealed bottles from other whiskey nerds. Some of the bottles are as old as pre-prohibition. They spend a ton of money on these bottles if they can find them sealed. OGD bottles and bottles from the Stitzel-Weller Distillery are the two that are the most sought after.

Do any of you guys drink Old Grand Dad? I read some detective books by a guy (Pelecanos) whose character is constantly drinking it; I had imagined that it was a fictional bourbon, but turns out it's not - I saw it at the liquor store yesterday.
Fantastic intel, E. Thanks!!
