Title: "Get to Know the Members" thread
Post by: The DARK on Feb 27, 2007, 07:50 PM
Most newbies to the thread don't know anything about us regular posters and get left out of most conversations. Let's post important facts about ourselves so new members will feel more "at home".

I'm The DARK. I have very little personal life outside this thread. Schoolwork destroys it. My favorite MMJ songs right now are Dancefloors, Dondante and Steam Engine. I play chess (this belongs in the confessions thread) and I hate Clemson.

I'm Dave. I have a shitty job that i work at just to pay the bills. I'm going to school to try and change that. I should have went 6 years ago, but whatever. I like to drink. Music means everything to me. I need a girlfriend. I've come to the conclusion that meeting girls at bars and fucking around with them just to wake up and regret it is not for me. I looked like this at age 14 (1996)...I still pretty much look like that, but my hair isn't that long. I'm thinking about growing it again.

My favorite color used to be green, but now I don't really have one because I think they all serve their purpose. I am drinking one of those aluminum bud light bottles right now. It's kinda pretty. I won a spelling bee once...and a poetry contest. The poem was called "The Bee". It went like this...

I went into a tree
so no one could see me
I saw a bee
and jumped out of the tree
because it stung me

...that was in 2nd grade. I have nothing at all whatsoever against gay people...other than I wish they didn't steal the rainbow as their symbol. I like rainbows. I'm not gay.

I created this thread for two reasons:

1. I don't get a lot of the inside jokes  ;)
2. face left because she felt "disconnected"...that's kinda how I feel now.  :'(

It's unfortunate that that face left, I liked her posts, so in homage to her:

• I'm 38 years old
• I own the world's cutest dog who recently killed a squirrel that fell out of a tree while taunting him
• Until 3 months ago I lived my entire life in Los Angeles and then kind of randomly moved to a city that I'd previously only been in for a total of 4 hours
• Except for my new coworkers I don't know a sole in this 'town (except for Liz who made me a Banana's t-shirt, but I don't think that counts very much)
• I spend a lot of time walking the dog around town, looking in windows, and thinking up things to say the homeless girl who, using a horrendous English accent, asks me for change every night and when I don't give her any she curses at me in her regular guttural voice
• I'm afraid of Mt. Hood (every week it seems somebody else bites it up there – what's up with you crazy climbers?)
• I love red wine (currently drinking a nice, cheap 100% Grenache) and though there are more breweries around here than you could shake a stick at, I think I may have lost the taste I once had for beer
• I rue the day I didn't pay more attention at my first MMJ show
• I had a dream the other night that I found the perfect prom dress to wear to an Under The Sea dance which, sadly, I won't be going tp. (Short side bar: the prom in the movie Back To The Future was also titled Under The Sea and was filmed at my high school while I was going there.  It was days before I realized the posters around campus were in fact for the movie and not for me to attend  :'()

QuoteI created this thread for two reasons:

2. face left because she felt "disconnected"...that's kinda how I feel now.  :'(

Oh oh oh! Sad you and face feel disconnected. I'm a long time member and feel that sometimes. It comes and goes. Face will be back I hope. Sometimes people don't post for ages (O, Magnix, Tundra, Drunkre for example), but they pop up now and then and it's great to see them when they do).

I teach science, have seen the band four times and met Patrick and Bo last summer. My partner is wordawg and we live in England. We have five kids. I like Lost, 24, Prison Break and The Office.

As johnconaway used to say (if I remember rightly) feel the love  :)

The Dark, the reason you don't get most of the inside jokes is because you haven't been around long enough yet, desite your post count.  If you stick around you'll probably be in on a few.  You have a hand, right?

As far as me:
I am 25
I am a teacher
I am a Little League coach
I love music (the good kind)
I play several instruments but my favorite is guitar
I run the mmj tabs site and am seriously considering running a m ward site as well
I have no kids (other than the 24 I am responsible for at school)
I enjoy good beer
I vacation in Hilton Head although this summer I'm going up to NYC and Boston to see some homies
I also once deleted my account and left the forum but I'm back now
I believe Jesus is my personal lord and savior (not the 2000 year old dead jew, the bowling pederass from the Big Lebowski)

In 66 days, my palindrome year will be over. I will not have another one until I am 33, but I guess I'm cool with that.

I was born and raised in and around Birmingham, Alabama. And it pisses me off when people assume all southerners are ignorant and inbred.

I am a program director for two radio stations. I received a call the other day from a group of ladies at a local nursing home who listen to the AM station every day and have formed a Meg fan club.

I love seventies pop.

I think section six from Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" is the greatest poem ever written.

I hate shoes.

I have been published twice. I call myself a writer, but I throw away about 97.6% if what I actually write because I am too afraid to let anyone else read it.

I always want what I can't have.

My southern accent gets worse when I drink.

I firmly believe random Mr. Show or Big Lebowski qoutes have a place in daily life.

I like to make people happy.

I feel sorry for inanimate objects from time to time--like all the stuffed animals no one buys after the holidays, etc.

I have three nephews and four nieces.

My favorite foods: broccoli, crunchy shrimp rolls, gouda cheese, bbq, spinach lasagna, miso soup, or anything my grandmothers cook.

I am very gullible, but I see this as a positive thing. I mean, I'm not so jaded that I doubt everyone (yet).

I have yet to find anyone who "gets" me.

I also think bees suck. And wasps, too. Fuck a wasp.

Drinks of choice: Makers, white russians, plum wine, celebrator

I like to dance.

I am a girl.

Yeah.

we welcome you to our home and would be glad to throw a lawn party for all of you. stipulation: we control the record player. your face is going to be saturated by otis, aretha, billy preston organ, and shitty 70's r&b* as we see fit. This is a promise.
we have also been known to have dance parties to Physical Graffiti particularly the song Trampled Underfoot, and yes it is incredibly possible.

No i meant sleeping with only one girl is rubbish, as in not very impressive, as in "you've only slept with one girl? That's rubbish, I've slept with at least 5!"

I'm 33.
I am a Mechanical Engineer working for a engineering sales company.
I will always regret not trying harder to get a job in the automotive industry, since it's a love of mine.
I went to the U of Missouri and miss being in a college town.
I had never joined a forum, but needed to talk to others about this band, and discovered a lot of like minded people who I consider friends.  I love knowing that I have small relationships with people all over this country (and world for that matter) and think that someday, I may get to meet a few of you.
My lottory dream involves 200 plane tickets to Hawaii, 200 hotel rooms, a small stage on the beach for Jim and the boys, and convincing all you mother fuckers to take two weeks off.
I am too sensitive and tear up easily like Dick Vermeil.  I am working on this, but when I am really stoned, Jim James can still make me cry instantly.
I am married to the greatest woman in the world who I met in high school 16 years ago.  I have two girls named Ella and Macy and a boy on the way any day now.
I am really busy these days but I go to shows every chance I get. Music means everything to me and my second biggest regret is never learning to play an instrument.  I used to like to read Stephen King and Frederick Forsythe but now I never have time.

Pink Floyd
Merlot
Mizzou Basketball
The Black Crowes
Cabernet Savignon
Formula One
MY MORNING JACKET!
Shlafley Pale Ale
STL Cardinal Baseball
Maker's Mark (But usually my cheap ass buys Ten High, Uhgg!)
Jon Spencer Blues Exposion
Pinot Noir
Mizzou Football
Butthole Surfers
Any I.P.A.
Autocross/Carting
The Music you guys and MMJ have turned me on to in the last two years (A. Bird/M. Ward/Wax Fang/K. Edwards/R. LaMontagne)
Rams Football

Falling asleep yet?

Everyone seems to think things are a little stale around here lately.  I think it's been a long winter folks.  Let's get some sunshine soon.  Stare at the works of mother nature with some Jacket filling our heads, and all will be right with the world.

Dave "My Freinds Call me Hermo" Hermann

P.S.
I fucking love bees. ;)

never been on a plane
haven't had any luck with women
been listening to mmj since Z came out
started coming here because i didn't know anyone else who likes mmj so i had to vent somehow. since then i've gotten one friend into them, most people that i play them for seem to like them but haven't been overly impressed. i've never heard anything negative about em from them.
got to see them live for the first time dec. 4th at house of blues cleveland. it was like a dream come true cause i thought they'd never come. its been since 2004 since they last came to pittsburgh, and cleveland is certainly close enough to go.

Let's do this...

Kaley, 20.  Yes, I'm a guy.  I didn't pick my name, but I've grown to like it, kinda.
I took a year of business classes only to realize there's no way that's what I want to do for my lifetime.
I'm the business manager at a local RV/snowmobile/ATV dealership.  Cruel twist of fate.  Pays well, co-workers are great.  I daydream all day and make the least amount of work last the longest possible time.
Only child and my father was killed before I was born.
I live in a basement suite, but still end up spending a lot of time at my mother's house.
Single (but content).
To my friends I'm pretty much non-existent on weekdays.  I usually don't talk to any of them until just before wing night on Thursdays.
Arrested Development.
Veronica Mars.
Ricky Gervais.
Charlie Kaufman.
Springsteen/Dylan/Waits.
MMJ/The Hold Steady/The Constantines.
I spend way too much money on music.
Big sports fan.  Love the Vikings, Blue Jays and Capitals.
Nintendo Wii!!!
I have one pet - RoboCat.
Crown Royal and Coke.
Pretty much any beer, except Coors Light.  I love any Honey Brown ale.
I drink far too much chocolate milk.
I order pizza and immediately put it in the fridge.  I love day-old, cold pizza.
Wish I could grow a beard.  Like Tom's, that'd be great.

I think that's a good introduction.

ok i'm not  going to buy a case of the bullets, but bud light is the beer i won't drink. i mean i will, but its just not my type of beer. i'll take coors light over bud light, but i know i'm in minority. especially when bud light is the number one selling beer. which i think thats why i don't drink it.
as far as watered down beer, Mich Golden Light is the most. i think its only sold in south and north dakato and minnesota.

And red, being Canadian, hates the Coors Light which is brewed in Canada by Molson, which is stronger and better than the original US brand. He must have a powerful hate for the stuff. I find it not too bad on draft, but there are far better light choices out there.

so good to hear more about you kids. i was really hoping a thread like this would pop up sometime.

I am:
30ish
5'3" and fairly compact
an Aries
the unlikely offspring of a former night club singer and an ex Catholic priest
pretty far left of center
have one brother who lives in London
live in upstate NY but would like to move somewhere warmer
have seen MMJ 7 times, 5 of them being last year during a 1/3 life
crisis of sorts (I am better now, due in large part to those shows)

I believe that furry children are children too.
I live in a tape and label factory with 2 cats, Sam and Emma. I love them fiercely.
single but want to find a sweet ball & chain and bear or adopt human children eventually. I am shy at first in person and still a little afraid of the internet
This is the only band forum I visit and I have enjoyed it, but I've had to curtail my participation due to some recent computer/network woes.

have lived in new york state, rhode island, the pacific northwest and italy. have been lucky to visit lots of countries and sometimes stay awhile. I make prints and paintings and the occasional sculpture and have been teaching art to various ages for the past 10 years. In the past I've worked as a mental health counselor/art therapist, gallery/performance space founder/director. Have had many shitty part time jobs over the years too- the worst being pot scrubber in a hospital kitchen. I had really big hair in high school and watched headbangers ball regularly.
I have a fondness for old, heavy, cast iron hand-printing presses, and have set up my own printshop in my space.
Sing and play the piano but not in front of others.

I am frequently told I am too sensitive and idealistic. I try not to eat animals intentionally, but if they end up mixed into my food inadvertently, I sometimes pretend I didn't notice. But I wish we could produce meat that didn't have faces or feelings. I grow a good amount of my own food, am a dedicated composter/vermiculturalist (worms).

I prefer playing sports that involve kicking rather than swinging racquets.
Have a tendency to take in strays both living and inanimate- trying to stop that. I can't stand passive-aggressiveness. Prefer straight shooters. I like guys who are a teensy bit husky and not afraid of wearing pants that fit or dancing in them. Some of my favorite things to do include sharing good music with others, sitting a long time looking at great paintings and hearing other people tell stories.

I am an excellent driver which I attribute to mad amounts of Nintendo and Atari as a kid, but I've been in 7 car accidents where the car has been totalled (none my fault) so I might be running out of chances at surviving.
My only real fear is of suffocation both figuratively and literally.

I don't really watch TV, but I love Curb Your Enthusiasm. Among my favorite movies are: Harold and Maude, the Gleaners and I, most films by Lars von Trier, Todd Haynes...the list is longer than I feel like dealing with right now. I read a lot too, some fave books are Dry by Augusten Burroughs, Country of My Skull by Antjie Krog, Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee and On Creativity by David Bohm.

Won't get into music now because I am into lots of the same stuff as others on here, but right now I am liking the new Shins album, and recent stuff by David Pajo and Jack Rose.

Still dig the rituals and mythology of Catholicism, but I relate much more to Buddhism. I try to not separate spirituality from everything else I do. For me it's more about daily awareness than a routine. But sometimes it is hard to be consistent.

Now you know way too much.

Oh and I owe Bermuda several drinks from the recent Shins show.

A few things I left out...

-Do not really watch a lot of TV, HOWEVER it do greatly enjoy Lost, 24, MXC, Arrested Development, and I have an unhealthy obsession with Good Eats
-Green is fav color
-I'm trying to learn to play guitar but am sadly realizing I SUCK and have no chance of being remotly average. (small hands)
-I used to play the trombone so does that make me a tromboner?!?!? WTF?
-I love old brick homes and generaly hate new homes.
-I love woodworking and remodling. Kind of goes with the love for old homes. And if you have seen some of my other posts, you've seen some of the handy work. In the apparent "slow" time until new album buzz starts to hit (let it be this year let it be this year) I should start a seperate thread for post home and remodel pics.

-Hate most radio, however I cannot get enough of Bob & Tom.

-great supporter of stem cell and other research to hopefully help with MS, Parkinsons, Alzheimer, strokes. All have hit my family and none of it is anything I ever want to go through again and never want anyone to have to live through.
Glad to see there are many other cat lovers here. Ms Jinx, or as I call her The Black Beast of Arrrrrrrrhg, is the fluffiest, laziest cat I have ever seen and I wouldn't change a thing about her.

I'm with you on the coffee/chocolate snob thing, Mike. I used to drink bad coffee and would get so agitated I'd pick fights. In the NW I learned about the difference between robusta beans (bad) and arabica (good) and also realized that espresso was for me, as it functioned more like a laser beam vs. the shotgun blast that regular brew can be. I am into precise dosage. Beyond taste, I had no idea how horrible bad coffee/chocolate is for the environment, workers, etc. until a couple of years ago. I know some really great roasteries that ship the same day they roast if you are interested.

QuoteWhere's your "get to know you" post?
There are close to 5000 of them scattered here there & everywhere  ;)

OK, here goes...
33 years old.
Born & lived in the UK until I was 23 & then moved to Japan.
Am happily married to a lovely Japanese girl & have my own English school so I guess I'm here for the long run.
I'm very close to my family. I have 2 sisters both still in the UK, Mum & Dad live in Spain.
Like a lot of people here music is very important to me.
I have 1500+ CDs, would have 2000+ if I'd never sold any.
U2 was the first band I obsessed over.
My racing bike was called Larry Mullen Jr & I had a long black coat that I wore everywhere.
I used to go to 2 or 3 live shows a month when I lived in the UK. I miss live music.
Wore flannel in my late teens (saw Pearl Jam's debut UK show in a tiny little club, Nirvana a couple of times, once before Nevermind, Soundgarden etc)
Kyuss ruled my soundscape for a few years.
Then I discovered Dance music & Hip-Hop & started going clubbing.
Fell in love with Country music a few years ago.
Have always been a HUGE Elvis fan. Went to Graceland a couple of years ago, want to go again.
Met Steve Earle in London.
The Jacket are my fav current band. Was lucky enough to see them last year when I was home for my sisters wedding.
Tried to learn to play the guitar once but was rubbish, keep meaning to try again.
Used to love painting, don't find the time any more.
Love movies nearly as much as music, & have a big DVD collection.
Amelie, Cinema Paradiso, Goodfellas, Dances With Wolves, The Big L etc are some of my fav movies.
Saw Fred Ward in a book shop in London once, still regret to this day not shaking his hand & telling him how good a movie Tremors was!
Love to travel, have been to Hawaii many times, Memphis & Nashville, Guam, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands.
There are still many countries I'd like to visit but it's difficult to do that & catch up with my family too.
Want to visit Machu Pichu, TK is my hero!
Pizza is hands down my fav food.
Love beer and Jack & Coke.
Love this forum & everyone on it but need to spend less time on the internet.

QuoteI'm with you on the coffee/chocolate snob thing, Mike.

Thanks. I try to only buy Organic/Fair Trade/Shade Grown when possible. Currently I am hooked on Green Mountain. Also dip into the European Coffeehouse collections and the uberspecialty roasts from Gevalia. There are a couple decent envirosocial conscious roasters here in St Louis. I am always on the lookout for new sources. If they have Ethiopian Yergacheffe, they are aok in my book. They hate me at work as my office always smells of freshly ground coffee.

I did not know that. Must be so great to be close to so many great places in and around Asia. On a similar note, I have been to Tunisia which a lot of people think sounds exotic. But, I mostly went there because it was the closest (2 hr. flight) and cheapest place to have a deluxe vacation while I was living in Italy. I was nearly killed by the king pin of Tunis, but that's a story for another night.

Cool. Check out Batdorf and Bronson coffee roasters. http://www.batdorf.com
They are excellent in every way and the staff is exceptionally knowledgeable about all things food, wine, coffee. Even if their coffees aren't labelled as fair trade, they abide by the same or better standards. The whole fair trade thing is a bit of a bureaucratic conundrum that often means beans not being fresh/being held up in transit in order to get that label.

Thanks I will give them a try. Yeah the whole Free Trade/Organic thing is a mess and you have to watch what you are getting and from who. There was an interesting National Geo documentary on coffee that was on TV the other night. My wife just kept shaking her head going...jeez it's just coffee. Spoken like a true non coffee drinker.

23 years old

Currently looking for a full-time job since I graduated in December

Lived in MD, basically hated it. Moved to PA for school. I live in an apartment that was my dad's house when he grew up in PA. I am the landlord of the building. Both parents grew up in PA, and all family members besides them still live back here, so I had no problem relocating. MD is way to expensive.

Have a band, which is difficult since the other two members live in MD, but it works out. I write the basic songs acoustically, then head down for long weekends and we complete them as a band..... www.myspace.com/brokendownbus    we need more friends! and listens!...just read the blog first!!!!

Soon to be engaged...she already expects it...

Hate: Baseball, the patriots, bret favre, the ravens, baseball, baseball, baseball, Notre Dame, Florida State

Love: playing guitar, drums, music, writing, reading

Dear fellow nature loving, honda driving lefty,
I am glad you care about these things and wish more people wanted to protect life in all forms. I thank my lucky stars I have never had to make that decision, but I know plenty of women who have and it's not an enviable position to be in. I have struggled tremendously with this issue and it's not that I think abortion is a good thing. But, not all women who elect to have one are morally bankrupt, hellbent on killing babies and in need of being taught a lesson through physical pain and sterilization. Don't you think that deciding to destroy part of yourself, experiencing death inside your body and having to live with your choice is punishment enough? Even if it's not physically excruciating, I'd venture to say that for most who go through this it is a memorable, haunting experience no matter if you feel it is morally neutral or wrong. Further, what's the fate of the dude who knocks said woman up? Should his genitals be taisered while said procedure is taking place? I know this is a hot button issue and I'm not trying to start a whole saga, but I know that for some people (for safety, economic, or emotional reasons) there really isn't another viable choice. I really don't think anyone wants to have an abortion. I do however wish that their was a test for people to become parents that the gods or some divine force would administer before it happens, but unfortunately, there is no such thing.

On a lighter note, I love your kids' names and natural interpretation sounds like the most amazing area to major in ever. Oh and I long ago had an intestinal parasite too and it's the worst. Glad yours has left too.

Peace.

Hey Eric, how's it going?

I had no idea how to post pictures when I first joined the forum (the good Doc helped me out!)
I was going to PM you but thought I'd post here just incase anybody needs help posting a pic.

To post a pic from the internet right click on the pic you want. A list of options should come up with Properties at the bottom. Scan down & click on Properties & a small Element Properties box should pop up. You need to cut & paste the 'Location' (left click & drag the mouse across the link to highlight it in blue, then right click on 'copy')
When you post here on the forum all you need to do is click on the third icon from the left that says 'Insert Image'
When you click on it these should appear: (img][/img)
You then need to place your cursor inbetween the 2 brackets (img]*here*[/img) then right click & choose paste. That will automatically put the 'Location' link that you copied from the Element Properties box.
Hmm not too sure how clear that is?  :-[

Posting you own pics is a little more complicated. You need to set up an internet photo file-sharing account. I use photobucket @ www.photobucket.com
If you set up an account & need some help some me a PM & try my best  :)

I should be the last person offering help really, I'm a complete PC spaz myself!

my statement above was purely idealistic, and we all know idealistic thinking just isn't practical.  it's a fantasy world solution, so of course it has plenty of holes.  no, i don't think all women who have abortions are hellbent on killing babies and morally bankrupt.  i'm sure the decision is pure hell for a lot of women, and it's definitely not envious.  yes, i do think men should have their balls tasered as well.  anyway, thanks for remaining very calm in questioning my very imflammatory statement.

glad your guts are better too.

I know, it's a great show.  Have you watched Freaks and Geeks?  For that show and Undeclared, I would put in an episode and then end up watching as many episodes as I could in one day.  The only other "show" that did that to me was Band of Brothers.

As for the Cubs, yeah, i know.  I still love em though  [smiley=laugh.gif]  wrigley is also a great place to go watch a baseball game.

-i have a job, but i hate it.  i will be traveling to Louisville for work in two weeks.
-i like to play kickball and drink PBR.  my team is called kick this drink that
-i like dark beers and shitty ones too.
-i travel to as many shows as I can afford to go to.  mostly in Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, and Milwaukee.
things i like
mmj, cheese, beer, people who aren't lame, the moon, the sun, camping, hanging out, snow, the beach, laying on green grass and staring at the sky, my local record store - strictly discs, the co-op

things i don't like
- olives, the smell of burnt toast, things clunking around in the back of my car, bad smells, people who fight about stupid shit on forums and bulletin boards (duh - stfu, right?), and steak.  I don't know why.  I think steak is gross.

Obviously love mmj and love to see them live.  I have lots of favorite songs.  Top of the list....Steam Engine, Run Thru, Lowdown, I will sing you songs, old sept blues, but these are my favorites today, i am sure they will change tomorrow.  You realize that it really blows that I am not at Langerado to see them on my bday.  I recognize that and I am going to try not to let it happen again.  fuckin jobs, fuckin money.  why doesn't it grow on trees.

Hope you enjoyed my new member rant.

Glad to hear you're a Cubs fan, Kel. I feared I was alone in my suffering. Our motto: Wait till next year...

I was lucky enough to see the legendary sub-pop showcase @ The Astoria (Mudhoney, Nirvana & Tad) before Nevermind came out. Don't remember anything about the show but I remember being blown away.
I saw them twice more after that (once with Shonen Knife, once with Captain America i think) but they didn't have the same energy & weren't as good to be honest.

I saw Hole play a tiny club in London before Courtney & Kurt hooked up too. They excellent back then. What was the name of their debut? I can remember the cover & the fact that it was on Caroline records...
They were pretty noisy/abrasive back then, nothing like the Hole of later years.
