i'm trapped in my house cuz austin is having an ice "storm." and my roommate is gone. so i'm starting this thread.
what is your #1 favorite song ever and you can only pick ONE.
mine is "laughing" by david crosby because i can listen to it when i'm happy or sad and it makes me cry. it's perfect for cold or hot weather. it's my favorite song of all time. i push it on all my friends but they end up better for it.
this is hard, because, well... it just is; however, after much consideration, i have reached a conclusion: my #1 favourite song is suite judy blue eyes from crosby, stills, nash, and young...
It's getting to the point where I'm no fun anymore
I am sorry
Sometimes it hurts so badly I must cry out loud
I am lonely
I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are
You make it hard
Remember what we've said and done and felt about each other
Oh, babe have mercy
Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now
I am not dreaming
I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are
You make it hard
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Tearing yourself away from me now you are free
And I am crying
This does not mean I don't love you I do that's forever
Yes and for always
I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are
You make it hard
Something inside is telling me that I've got your secret
Are you still listening?
Fear is the lock and laughter the key to your heart
And I love you
I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are
You make it hard
And you make it hard
Friday evening
Sunday in the afternoon
What have you got to lose?
Tuesday morning
Please be gone I'm tired of you
What have you got to lose?
Can I tell it like it is? (Help me I'm sufferin')
Listen to me baby
It's my heart that's a sufferin' it's a dyin' (Help me I'm dyin')
And that's what I have to lose (To lose)
I've got an answer
I'm going to fly away
What have I got to lose?
Will you come see me
Thursdays and Saturdays?
What have you got to lose?
Chestnut brown canary
Ruby throated sparrow
Sing a song, don't be long
Thrill me to the marrow
Voices of the angels
Ring around the moonlight
Asking me said she so free
How can you catch the sparrow?
Lacy lilting lady
Losing love lamenting
Change my life, make it right
Be my lady
Que linda me la traiga Cuba
La reina de la Mar Caribe
Cielo sol no tiene sangreahi
Y que triste que no puedo vaya oh va, oh va
i respect you two.
i could never
ever
ever
do that.
and i'm not just saying that.
i just thought for about twenty minutes and i realized i can never say. i can name a second favorite, though, which leaves an opening for first favorite, which means anything can go in there at any time.
but that's defeating the purpose.
and i dont' even know a second favorite.
bye.
Wow, uhhhh....
I'll say there's a song that always makes me feel better no matter where I am or what I am doing.
Penny Lane-The Beatles
Mine is probably Neil Young w/ The Band doing "Helpless" from the Last Waltz. I watch this atleast 4 or 5 times a week, listen to it probably 10 times a week.
We had the same thread...a year or so ago? can't remember when...
Anyway, I decided then that I would have to go with Patsy Cline's cover of Crazy.
Choosing one fav song is damn near impossible but Crazy has been one of my fav songs for longer than any other & I never get tired of hearing it...& I guess that's why it gets my vote.
Mine is #41 by the Dave Matthews Band. I know for most DMB fans that's a common favorite, but I don't care. It's so beautiful. The instrumentation is just gorgeous. Also, the jamming that they do live with the song blows my mind. Dave just pours his soul into it.
Here's the song live:

If I Could Only Fly - Blaze Foley
The song to end all songs...
"Dogs" by Pink Floyd = Masterpiece!
Picking a Pink Floyd song may be cliche but it was a close race between this and "Yesterday" by the Beatles. When I was little my mom had a music box that played the melody to yesterday and a little flower at the top spun around. I was like 5 or so and I think tha song stuck in my head and to this day, It makes me feel sad, happy, mad, hungry or just crystalline.
Strike that, it's "Yesterday" by the Beatles.
Dogs still makes me paranoid of all those around me.
Cam'ron's cover of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
My client has requested me to post the following link.
http://users.cis.net/sammy/escape.htm
Jane's Addiction - Three Days
Such a sexy song with a killa bass line and probably one of the greatest geetar solos EVER! I can never get enough of this one. And the song that comes right after. :)
I'm going at this thread with a "If you were stuck on a desert island and could only have one song with you" attitude. I'd probably have to pick "Band on the Run" by Wings just for shear replayability.
Damn Gregg! I didn't know that Christopher Lee was in Wings.

Gilmour's guitar in Dogs gives me the biggest goosebumps! Shit I wanna blast that tune right now!
QuoteDamn Gregg! I didn't know that Christopher Lee was in Wings.
You missed Lee Marvin ;)
Oh SHit. Steve Coburn too. ;D
Three Days & Band On The Run, 2 great songs right there!
Aren't you being a little biased though 'Gregg'? ;)
Biased? Whatever do you mean... :-? :)
And I actually didn't realize that this was a feux (right spelling?) wings cover. I feel so ashamed for not double checking my sources.
Like A Hurricane
Old Black baby.
I think I have to go with While my guitar gently weeps
George = Genius
after many thoughtful nights...
happiness is a warm gun...
see
now i feel bad.
ugh. :-[
or
visions of johanna by mr. bob dylan
Easy - Here Comes the Sun.
Chalk another up for George..
This wasn't really as hard as I thought it was going to be. It used to be "Yellow Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam but now it's...............
PHONE WENT WEST!!!!

Nice choice! I am going to have to break that one back out. It is definately my favorite Jane's song. With Whores a close second.
Dogs and Yellow Ledbetter are also fantastic choices.
I also have a hard time picking one song so I am going to go with the song that I try to live my life by. It's hard sometimes but I try. I have no idea what Waters was thinking when I wrote it but to me, it says to live life to the fullest and follow your dreams. The same message I get from Bermuda Highway.
FREE FOUR by pink floyd
one two free four
the memories of a man in his old age
are the deeds of a man in his prime
you shuffle in gloom of the sick room
and talk to yourself as you die
life is a short warm moment
and death is a long cold rest
you get your chance to try
in the twinkling of an eye
eighty years with luck or even less
so all aboard for the american tour
and maybe you'll make it to the top
but mind how you go
and I can tell you 'cos I know
you may find it hard to get off
but you are the angel of death
and I am the dead man's son
he was buried like a mole in a fox-hole
and everyone's still on the run
and who is the master of fox hounds
and who says the hunt has begun
and who calls the tune in the courtroom
and who beats the funeral drum
the memories of a man in his old age
are the deeds of a man in his prime
you shuffle in gloom in the sickroom
and talk to yourself til you die

GREAT choice! And I thought I might be the only one around here with Patsy on their ipod. ;) As for me, I just can not do it ....... :-[ too many that make me feel good or the way I am supposed to feel at that moment.

I know that you guys are gettin' f**ked by the storms, and it has been catastrophic if not fatal for several. :'( But did you experience that queer sense of humanity and survival that accompanies such? Schedules, work, superficial needs take a second seat. Survival and helping others dominate. Strange but true. Even though it is a total pain in the ass, I think we need a dose of that occasionally. Even though it would inconvenience me greatly, I kinda' miss gettin' snowed in. :)

Nice to see some love for the classics TEO :)
Other contenders:
Stevie Wonder - He's Misstra Know It All
Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
Van Morrison - Into The Mystic
QuoteWow, uhhhh....
I'll say there's a song that always makes me feel better no matter where I am or what I am doing.
Penny Lane-The Beatles
Saying one would be my favorite would feel like cheating to former favorites.
So I'll say there's one that I can never keep my mouth shut during.
Hey Jude-The Beatles
I always have to scream along at the end. ;)
I think Sloan's "Money City Maniacs" is one of the best power pop songs from the 90's and the video is perfect: http://youtube.com/watch?v=oEpSecRuhmc
Sloan remains one of Canada's best bands.
I think I'm the same as the most of you, I can't choose just one favourite song because there are so many songs out there that speaks to me in its own way.
But at the moment I think my favourite song is "The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion" by Okkervil River.
Right at the moment I'll say We Can Work It Out -The Beatles. I've been on a Beatles kick lately.
'Waiting in Vain' by Bob Marley might be it from my old school choices.
Or a beatles song.
"Moonshiner"---been done a million times by a million people, but Dylan's and Uncle Tupelo's version remain my favorite!
okay, i think I've figured out my favorite. it'll probably change. it probably should be a dylan song since he's my favorite but really i think my favorite song of all time is "Only Living Boy in New York" by Simon and Garfunkel.
like i said earlier, put the ipod on shuffle for the morning commute... and then... i heard "martha my dear."
how could i have completely forgotten my eternal and unwavering love for this song?
it was the first song to which i learned all the words. i love "martha my dear," and i feel terrible for neglecting it. like i cheated on my boyfriend or something. not a good feeling.
anyway.
i fucking love "martha my dear."
you should go listen to it.
now.
Louis Armstrong's We Have All The Time In The World could be another contender...
Quoteokay, i think I've figured out my favorite. it'll probably change. it probably should be a dylan song since he's my favorite but really i think my favorite song of all time is "Only Living Boy in New York" by Simon and Garfunkel.
:-*
Magnificent choice!!
Gonna have to go with Dead Flowers by the Rolling Stones. Its about a guy who just got dumped and enjoys lots of drugs, but something about it just makes me happy. #2 probably Dont Go Back to Rockville by REM.
this is REALLY hard to say, but probably...
The Only Living Boy in New York by Simon and Garfunkel
followed by five or six dylan songs.
BUMP!!! :)
...............................................................................................................
I'm making my Mum a mixtape for her 64th birthday...3 actually, 28 Elvis songs on one CD (Suspicious Minds), 18 tracks by my fav male artists & 18 by my fav female artists...
Crazy (Patsy Cline) is still there, so is We Have All The Time In the World (Louis Armstrong) & so is Into The Mystic (Van Morrison)...It Was A Very Good Year (Frank)
But I need to add publicly that This Bitter Earth (Dinah Washington) & The Other Women (Nina Simone) have been well & truly added to the list of contenders!
You've got to go with the classics...
Say A Little Prayer by Aretha...that's another!
QuoteBUMP!!! :)

Hmm, I'll base my decision, like someone said earlier in the thread, as if I was on a deserted island; for the replay value.
Either, La Villa Strangiato by Rush or Where to Begin
QuoteWhere to Begin
Nothing wrong with that choice :)
SRV Tin Pan Alley 8-)
Can't You See by the Marshall Tucker Band.
I Second That Emotion - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
Honorable Mention:
Trenchtown Rock - Bob Marley & the Wailers
Loving Cup - Rolling Stones
What A Day That Was - Talking Heads (Stop Making Sense Version)
there are some fab songs in this list!
gonna have to go with:
ray charles: come rain or come shine
or
sam cooke: having a party
my all time favorite song is "It makes no difference" ---no matter what, when i hear this song i get a tear in my eye---because of personal reasons and because it's the most beautiful sad song ever written (and sad songs are SO much better than happy songs)
bittersweet symphony and the OSU song are probably next on the list
QuoteCan't You See by the Marshall Tucker Band.
wow, I had one of my first clean "out of body experiences" to this song right after I got out of rehab in 1989. In a boathouse in Gloucester, MA on an unusually warm February day. WBCN Boston. This song was playing loud and my mind reached a certain clarity that was calming.

wow sober 20 years almost! congrats :D
Is Lord, I'm Discouraged by the Hold Steady too new for consideration. It's my current #1 anyway.
O.K. - Gigantic by the Pixies. I know I'm supposed to pick something deep and moving and not a song about having sex with a black dude, but what can I say? Best bass line ever, silly screaming by Black/Frank/Charles, loud crunchy guitars, and about 3 minutes long at best. Is there anything better?
This is an impossible question, but for lack of me thinking about it and this just popping into my head, ill go with:
Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey
i feel like this answer changes everyday for me but for now i will say rolling stones - dead flowers

I still stand by this statement. I think it's been my favourite song for about 12 years.

I remember waking up to this song at Tracy's house one day and it hit me pretty hard. I also closed my last mix tape with it.
