Title: Fleet Foxes
Post by: DavidCrosby on Jul 05, 2008, 02:09 PM
....any MMJ fans into this band?????.....I hear a lot of comparisons between the two (like how FF sounds like MMJ) but I really don't think so....just because both bands have a very strong vocalist I think that is where the comparison lies.....

....but the music is so different, FF's songs are more stories as opposed to verse-chorus-verse and most of the songs are kind of arranged in suites...and they don't rock like MMJ.....

.....anybody else agree??? because I would hate to have them pigeon holed like that....

I'm not seeing it, but honestly I didn't give FF *too* much attention--they were just way too sleepy for me. Never caught my attention--MMJ caught my attention the first measure of music I heard from them . . . So again, in that sense-I just don't see it.

I say Fleet Foxes deserves another thread, if anything to continue talking about the MMJ comparison. I agree with Crosby, after so many listens of Sun Giant & Fleet Foxes (self titled LP), I think those that are saying FF sound just like MMJ circa 2002 are a little off. Their harmonies are more complex, which is only natural since it's 3- and 4-part with different voices, whereas pre-2004 MMJ harmonies are pretty much multi-tracked Jim, and none live, eh? (I'm confident someone will correct me if I'm wrong here) I guess you could say Pecknold and James on their own are very similar, i.e "Oliver James" and say, "Bermuda Highway", but as we know that's not what either band is all about.
Tom seems like the best authority on these guys, since he's actually seen em live. I can't wait to see them, and I'm sure they do rock out - but I'm thinking they don't have "Phone Went West" or "Run Thru"-type rockin in their arsenal.

Quite true about no Run Thru, but when they open with all the passion of Sun Giant and then make their way into Sun It Rises, when that drum part finally comes in, you understand what they meant in "Sun Giant" about a "giant torn from the clouds"--the entire wall of tension of the building acts as a cloudburst and everything comes into focus for the first time in their set, and it's so incredibly beautiful.

That said, you are damn straight about the harmony. They have four parts going on a lot of it, most of the time there's three. They changed drummers and added good friend Josh Tillman (www.myspace.com/jtillman) and the ferocity with which he plays adds so damn much to it. You can tell he loves those guys and he loves that music, and the genuine shared expression of joy between all of them makes it entirely worth it. Good Lord. I just wanted to scream "Josh! You kick ASS!" to let him know how appreciated he is in that band. Adds a whole new ferocious element to how huge their drum sound already was.

As for the harmonies, to hear them take "Sun Giant" and completely destroy and rebuild the temple that is that song's harmonic structure is so awe-inspiring that it really defies verbal description. The way these guys sang it Saturday evening to open the show was absolutely and completely different than how it's recorded on the EP. And it made it every bit the more beautiful. And it took everyone in the room and engaged them immediately. They weren't just singing back that which they'd already written and laid down as done. They were furthering it. I have no doubt in my mind that it was entirely different the next night in North Carolina. And three nights before in Austin. All these guys not only know but love what they are doing, and you don't need to look any further than the look on Skye Skjelset's face as he beams throughout the set while tuning into what every one else in that band is doing.

I have no doubt that these guys will need a break from the touring when they settle down in a month or so, but I also am damn certain that they will have so much more in store for us after that break. I've never seen a band contribute so strongly and so evenly and so unselfishly as these guys. It's like they understood the entire point of it was to glorify this music that they'd been gifted with, and each and everyone of them worked to do that with every ounce of their own beings.

The structure of this group takes the music from just being Robin's songs to being everyone in that group's baby. I don't know if Robin wrote the lead line in "Blue Ridge Mountains" and I don't need to, either. I don't know if he can play the mandolin or the Rhodes on his own--that's Casey Wescott's role there, and the sheer joy in his face as he's doing so is testament enough to understanding that those guys are all exactly where they are meant to be. The music isn't pretentious at all because it's presented with such honesty and joy. It's a gift to the listener, and they understand that, but don't hold themselves as the originator so much as the vessel. My old signature line on this board used to be "We are only vessels for the music we carry." These guys exemplify that in a live setting.

One of the most beautiful things happened, and it was weird, because I wanted it to go the other way. But when everyone trooped off stage to leave Robin to play "Oliver James", someone yelled for "Kate Cruel" and he responded with "I guess I could do that one..." My thought was that he should shrug it off and play what he was going to, but then he went on in to "Katie Cruel" and I realized he'd just given that guy who asked for it something special. No set list is too set for a little generosity, and Robin not only made that guy's night, but everyone else's with that special addition. Hell, even if it was exactly as he meant for it to go all along, his reaction and interaction with that fan were what makes this band worth seeing.

I came away from the show wanting to return those guys the favor. And I realized the biggest way we can repay the artists we love is to make them something with our own heart in soul in it, in the same way they've created something similar for us. I'm working on figuring out what I'd like to make for them next time they come around. I'm thinking about tackling the project of building Robin an acoustic with a pickup that doesn't hang out of the soundhole and onto the floor, as ambitious and time consuming as that is, because I'd like them to know what they mean to the people they make music for, and like for him to have a real quality instrument that can act as a reflection of the combined gratitude of everyone they've made music for so far.

There's something special about this band. And I am very thankful for that. And I'll happily defend them against any MMJ comparisons you can throw their way.

(I don't hear the "Bermuda Highway"/"Oliver James" comparison at all.)

That was some great reading Tom, thanks for that. Now I'm dying even more to see them live, which for me means another trip to Denver in about 2 weeks - along with the MMJ Red Rocks show in August.  :D

(The only point I was trying to make with the Oliver James/Bermuda Highway thing is that they're both lead singer solo tunes, and hence, similar)

I really like the Fleet Foxes!  I kinda got the MMJ comparison but the more i hear them I am reminded of the Band of Horses.

I just dont get the Rock n Roll feeling with FF that I get with MMJ

....I saw them at Bowery Ballroom in NYC last Wednesday and it was incredible....I still don't think they rock like MMJ though or at all.....powerful musicianship doesn't necessarily mean rocking, ya konw what I mean????....heres a rough set list:

Sun Giant -> Sun It Rises -> Drops In The River
English House
White Winter Hymnal
Your Protector
Ragged Wood
Crayon Angels [Judee Sill Cover] (Robin solo)
Oliver James (Robin solo)
[Missing Song]
Mykonos
Blue Ridge Mountains
(encore)
Tiger Mountain Peasant Song (Robin solo)

Well, to revise, they don't rock in the same way that MMJ does, but is that something we need?

They have their own sound, and it's powerful and huge and moving, in a similar way to the way the Jacket has moved me, but in a way that's completely their own sound.

I think my favorite part of MMJ is the sound that edges on this side of things. Run Thru is huge and awesome, but when I think about MMJ, that's not the song I think of. Golden is, I think. I Will Sing You Songs is. Rollin' Back and Steam Engine, too. I listened to It Still Moves for a year before I got to the rest of their stuff, and then saw them another half year later for the first time. The live show is a different experience from my listening experience, and I relate the "MMJ sound" to what I am still the most familiar with on It Still Moves. I DON'T HATE THE OTHER STUFF, but that album is the definitive Jacket sound to me.

Does it make sense then why I'd say that they rock in a similar way to My Morning Jacket? The Jacket's live show has taken huge turns since the original line-up, surely, and these guys take a much more west-coast meets baroque harmony approach to Americana, but I think they carry a similar vibe to where MMJ has been. Obviously they don't have anything even similar to "Highly Suspicious," but we don't need that, do we?

DavidCrosby, MMJ comparisons aside, what did you think?

.....and ISM is the definitive MMJ for me too even though there really isn't a single song I dislike, it just is so amazing and I can't get over it sometimes......

Rock on, dude. The new guy on drums is Josh Tillman. He makes beautiful music, as well. Different vibe, but definitely fits in with these guys. Check him out here: www.myspace.com/jtillman

hey mid-30's guy from scotland.. welcome

i LOVE this album. bought purely on hearing mykonos on a free cd i got with spin magazine a while back.

i try to resist the urge wherever possible to compare bands to mmj or mmj to other bands... i would rather treat a band on it's own merits, or lack of, rather than potentially devaluing both bands by trying to make them fit on a middle ground. but hey, that's just me. it just seems to do a dis-service to the joy and effort musicians put in to making music to say "well, that sounds exactly like....".

but again, that's just me.

this album makes me feel happy, so i like it!!!  :)

From the Riverfront Times....

Fleet Foxes, which was making its St. Louis debut, seemed awestruck by the Fabulous Fox's ornate decorations. Early in its half-hour set, vocalist/guitarist Robin Pecknold said, "Does every building in St. Louis look like this? The Tomb Raider set? I want to live here." (Cue audience approval.) In turn, the audience fell silent for the Seattle quintet's jaw-dropping opening gig, enraptured by church-choir harmonies, campfire guitars and genial '70s percussion.

Although Fleet Foxes draws comparisons to My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses, its music thrives on simplicity, not bombast. The band members remain nearly still onstage -- save for drummer/percussionist J Tillman, a burly figure who's always in motion creating festive percussion accompaniment using tambourine, mallets and maracas. Breathtaking and angelic four-part harmonies incorporate rounds (an elementary school music class staple), while the band members – most of whom resembled forest elves or gnomes, thanks to haircut and delicate facial features – utilized minimal, zen-like guitar plucking.

The cavernous theater created an environment of natural reverb that perfectly suited Fleet Foxes' rustic folk. Several a cappella interludes were riveting; the CSNY-like "Mykonos" and "White Winter Hymnal," which incorporated tinges of Wall of Sound influence, were other highlights. Had the Beach Boys grown up in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, they might have evolved into Fleet Foxes.

Still, this music wouldn't emanate so much emotional warmth if the band took itself too seriously. And it certainly doesn't. At one point someone in the crowd yelled out, "We love you, Fleet Foxes!" The band sort of laughed and said "that would be awesome if one of the faces on the wall" had said that instead – an aside which spawned in-band jokes and giggling regarding the absurd idea of the Fox's decorations springing to life to comment.

Pecknold – whose olive green cardigan sweater, plaid shirt and slightly stooped posture gave him the air of a wizened old man -- seemed humbled and bashful at the genuine standing ovation his band received after the goosebump-inducing final song, "Blue Ridge Mountains." Squinting at the audience, he seemed unsure how to react at the adoration heaped upon the band – a sweet, sincere reaction to have, even though Fleet Foxes deserved every bit of acclaim.

"Sun It Rises"
"Ragged Wood"
"English House"
"White Winter Hymnal"
"Mykonos"
"Blue Ridge Mountains"

Hahahaha, they were so jazzed about that show! They loved us, loved the town and the way that, when their gear got screwed up, everyone in the theater were calling people cross-town to get it fixed or get them taken care. They made a few comments abotu moving here and my buddy, later on in the show, yelled out "Move here!" to them and Robin gave this look our direction like "hmmm, yes. now that's a thought..." and it was just this joyous unbelievably wonderful show from all sides. I love the way these guys talk with the crowd and how thankful they are for all the fans.

Ran into Josh Tillman (the drummer and solo artist, too, whom you should check out: www.myspace.com/jtillman ) before the show and thanked him for the new energy he brought to the band ont he drum kit and it was so cool to see him light up when I knew his name as he was walking by. Stopped to talk for a couple minutes and was just genuinely cool. Ran into Casey (keys/mandolin) and Christian (bass/guitar) afterward and they were so awesome as well. Casey did his best to remember our names and they were all just such warm people to interact with. I wouldn't doubt that Robin and Skye are the same way.

We definitely did our best to make it the best audience they could play to, and they returned the favor by giving us an absolutely wonderful show. GA Theatre was such a wonderful venue for them, and it paid off so so much.

Thoroughly love these guys so much.

The Animal Collective review is more positive.  Ho Hum.  Grauniad/Observer all over, that is.  ;) :-?

Good Lord, rather dull? I think his sense of harmony is so beautiful and, at times, rather haunting. You can't really compare his output to the Foxes, since they are essentially different artists, different songwriters, what-have-you. I like his stuff in a totally different way.

I bought their self titled album based on a Genius recommendation from iTunes.  I can see the comparison btwn them and MMJ, as long as it's a "they're trying to rip MMJ off" comparison. j/k

In all seriousness, the more I listen to them the better I like them and the more I understand them and see the differences.

However, I can't help but listen to Ragged Wood and think of Golden...

Really? That one actually sounds more like a tribute to M. Ward's "Chinese Translation" than anything else to me. Could just be the drums, though?

I really think it is a great album...It is certainly not for everyone and delves deeper into that 60's forest folk acoustic & flute vocal choir vibe. It definitely defied my expectations however. Seems like Robin has improved as a singer and a songwriter. Love the opening verse to Montezuma.

For those of you on the fence about the new Fleet Foxes album Helplessness Blues, it's $3.99 on amazon today, so that should make your decision easier

I like it.  I think it was always going to be extremely hard for them not to sound same ol' same ol' but I think they did a great job of seperating it from the debut.    I'm sure it will still sound great with the sun beating down and my toes in the river.

I dont have either their debut or the EP, but just listened to the stream on NPR. Im no worldly FFoxes connoisseur or anything, but it strikes me just like their previous material - "sounds" really good, but doesnt really draw me in or hit me. 2nd half of the album, title track on, sounded better to me for the most part. That 8 minute song was one of the  highlights I thought, as well as the last couple songs after it.

The Sun Giant EP and the self-titled debut didn't really draw me in or hit me either.  Yet I always find myself listening to both of them.  I think they discreetly tricked me into being obsessed with them.

New album is incredible!

Enchanting. Timeless. Somehow Fleet Foxes manages to weave these melodies as if it were a completely natural activity, effortless even...simply the consequence of gathering this quintet in a room with a few instruments. This band is really hitting its stride.

One thing is for certain...they sure set the bar high for May releases!

I believe that Montezuma is Robin's best vocal performance period. I cannot get over how perfect of a song/opener this one is. It is intoxicatingly heartwarming. The vocals slay me.

This band is certainly an acquired taste but I implore all fans of this kind of music to take a few extra listens if they don't take right away, seems to do the trick

After several listens favorites are:
Montezuma
Helplessness Blues
The Shrine/An Arguement
Blue-Spotted Tail
Grown Ocean

Also didn't care for battery kinzie at first but it is growing on me pretty quickly

It always bothered me that Starbucks sold music, some of it even stuff I liked. It always bothered me that I was seemingly turning into their target consumer - I didn't want to have "them" sitting up in Seattle thinking that they had me all figured out. But, I'm a caffeine fiend, and their coffee does the trick, so I stop in for a cup to go semi-regularly.

Lately I've had to travel to Sonoma County for work a couple times a week, which is about a two hour drive for me from where I live. Parts of it, including some of the parts I drive through for work, look like this:

Well, I stopped for coffee at Starbucks this morning about halfway through my drive, right before where the drive starts looking like the picture above, and wouldn't you know it, but Helplessness Blues is right up at the cash register for sale. Fuckin' Starbucks. I'd stubbornly never bought music from them, but knowing the stretch I had coming up, and the sounds that the album probably had on it, I couldn't pass up buying it for my last half of the drive.

I've got really strong musical memories, associations of songs or albums to times and places. Helplessness Blues will be the album for that drive, from this time. It's a wonderful, wonderful album.

Finally caved and bought this, even though I was a bit underwhelmed with the debut. I'm through Lorelai now, and I'm loving it so far. The songs feel so much more developed and meaningful than the first time around, which to me just seemed like a bunch of pretty melodies.

Great story!  I bought their 1st album this past May at a record store in Bergen, Norway.  I hadn't heard it prior to buying it, but I had seen one live performance by them on TV a few years prior, which caught my attention, and so did the album cover that day.  Bergen is a city that still remains very decorated by the Renaissance, and the album's complimentary vibe was working its voodoo on me.  I often walk into record stores not knowing what I'm going to walk out with.  Some people have pilgrimages to Mecca, the Vatican, Vegas... I visit record stores in random cities.  I just picked up Sun Giant in Newton, MA this weekend.  I'm thrilled to be seeing them live out in the woods of Holyoke, MA this coming September (at Mountain Park, where MMJ put on one of their most spectacular shows ever, by all accounts).  I haven't bought the new album yet, but I have a road trip coming up, so...

Man I didn't know Fleet Foxes could sell tickets like that! It seems like just last year they played a show here at HEadliners that didn't sell out. I refreshed right at 10am for the presale, got row R! Then  tried on my phone a couple of times to see if the mobile presale carried any weight. Ended up with row H at the palace. Proof that ROLL CALL is awesome. I got row B at the palace for MMJ, and thats a hometown show in a small theater.

They sold out DAR Constitution Hall in DC when I saw them fairly quick.  It seats 3700.  I think we were row AA.  Closer the better for these guys.  Incredible live show Robin is hilarious too.

Aaaaaahhh.... I've been progressively getting more and more into their newer album!  I knew in '09 when I saw them playing a couple new songs that I should try and pay close attention (I was so hellbent on their first album at the time....)  The new songs they played that night were Blue Spotted Tail (which I was immediately taken by) and Bedouin Dress (and maybe another, but I don't really think so.....) And now I'm so glad I did, and I'm so glad someone got youtube footage of it.... what a magical night! They played two shows, and both were sold out.....and I knew that going into the whole thing... but I drove the 4 hours down to DC and wound up scoring tickets for both shows, it was a real treat, and a blessing :-D

Well now I wish I saw them when they just played in Asheville, but I didn't know the new album then... would love to see them again soon!  :-*

I really hope they continue now that J. Tillman (drums, background vocals) left.  Haven't heard much from them since that announcement.  **fingers crossed**

I've been to about 30 shows at the Ryman, and this was one of the very best.  Brought tears to my eyes, fo real.  So so so good.  I try to tell people about it, but I can do no justice.

It was quite an amazing atmosphere and a wondrous thing to experience. The crowd was incredible that night and several band members were even kind enough to take pictures and sign things after the show. They still claim that it's their favorite show that they have ever played.

I was listening to a lot of Fleet Foxes last night for the first time in a while and realized how great these guys are.  I was paying attention to and reading the lyrics..... totally amazing.  Some serious meanings in those songs, and I wish I could decipher what they mean exactly.  Many months ago I read that  Pekold is back to music again.  Does anyone have any updates about these guys?

I've never seen them either, but it looks like that will change in 2017.
