Recommended to me by my local record store guy. He described it as a mix of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, The Soft Bulletin and OK Computer. If you're a fan of any of those records then this is definitely worth checking out. It's a pretty stunning album...

So right Weenie. I love him on that as well. It's a classic example of Pete and John exchanging roles with Townsend being a straight rhythm guy while Entwistle noodles in the higher octaves playing lead bass. Sweetness!

I've never been much of a fan, 'cause I find Colin Meloy's voice really grating and their subject matter a bit too quirky/twee/affected, but this is pushing all my buttons. You can really hear Peter Buck's hand in the record, it sounds like the product of an oddly sedate three-way between Peter, Neil Young and Gary Louris.

I've never been a fan for all these reasons...Tried to listen bc of all the stated alt-country influence; the music sounded ok but I'd rather listen to Whiskeytown or early Wilco rather than listen to that insufferable voice.
I really can't stand the early Decemberists, and its because of the way Colin Meloy sings with that pompous put-on accent. However, I found some of their last album pretty good - the harder edged guitar grooves sound good. I'll give this new album a spin at some point; I hear Colin has toned-down the accent.

Man the Church is really all over the place. Starfish is a really great album, but the rest of their output is here and there. I saw them in Miami in 88 or 89 and the show lierally went on for like 5 hours. For 2 hours it was the best show that I have ever seen, the remaining three was some attempt to redefine jam-band, psychedlic, progressive rock.

The soundtrack version is Moon-less. Kenny Jones filled in since Moonie had already started playing drums in Satan's band.

I actually bought the soundtrack for the first time around 5 years ago - I've had the original album for close to 30 years. The soundtrack is ok, but Moon was just a shadow of his former self on the re-recordings. The best thing about the soundtrack is the 2 extra songs The Who wrote and recorded for the film.
Still super into Broken Bells. So effing incredible.

I think I listened to Steeple 4x on Friday at work. I think you are spot on when you cited the early prog sound. As a fan of the modern psychedelic movement, this album particularly stood out because it was varied without sacrificing coherence while maintaining accessibility across the wide spectrum of songs. No matter how talented they are, they never enter the realm of self indulgent meanderings. Also, I can see them being criticized for copying artists from 4 decades ago. However, in the same way I defend J Roddy's originality, Wolf People have been able to twist it enough to make it all their own. I think this may have cracked my top 5 albums from last year and at the very least my top 10 had I listened to it last year.

I am wondering if you fans of futurebirds have heard of the Moondoggies. I find them to be very similar in stytle. Moondoggies have a more classic topanga canyon southern swamp-boogie vibe. They have a new album out Tidelands that I have not heard but their 2008 release "don't be a stranger" was one of my favorites that year.
They are from the northwest as, I believe Seattle, well here's a taste:

I don't remember there being a thread about them but they've been discussed here on this forum a few times. I have Don't be a Stranger and the EP and while I like them, it never got much further than that. I know aLady has seen them a time or two. I prefer the EP to Don't be a Stranger but I haven't heard their new album yet.
I dig the Futurbirds for their, poppy, alt country vibe they got. It all sounds familiar but at the same time isn't. There's also just a real joy in their music that I'm drawn to.

I'm just reveling in the miracle that was being called off of work today due to cold cloudy conditions... I was up through a bit of the night with some sinus drainage and really didn't want to head into work today. And by the grace of god I was called off.
So I've been making some herbal remedies, and I just started up a batch of dried rosehip decoction, and the instructions are "Bring to a boil and simmer on low for 10+ minutes"

That's really really weird. I read somewhere that Jason and Richie were going to do something together before Richie died. Too bad that never happened. I think it'd be a safe bet to say that would've been an amazing project. I know Acetone toured a lot with British bands (Oasis, Spiritualized, The Verve). I was hoping that some of you guys saw them while they were around. I wish I could have.

I saw them once in front of about 50 people at Sonar and they sounded incredible. At the time I saw them, I was only familiar with Here's to Taking it Easy and To Willie but those were the only two albums Houck basically culled from. If you like the music, you'll love the show. :thumbsup:

Indeed. Their front man, Ian Thornley, is a Canuck and has a less-than-stellar solo career going on right now. You will not like hearing that he is signed to Chad Kroeger's label and the fucker from Nickelback personally oversees all music from his artists. He's basically expanding Nickelback's sound though his label/signed bands.

Recently "discoverd" a band called "Telegraph Canyon". Anyone ever heard of these guys? I like what I've heard so far (2-3 listens of The Tide and The Current). I read someone described them as a mix between Wilco and My Morning Jacket, although I don't think that's accurate. I see them more as a kind of Mumford and Sons or something. Singer sometimes reminds me of that singer from Counting Crows with a bit Low Anthem and Arcade Fire or so. I dunno, but I like them :). They seem to be pretty unknown, as there are not many videos of them on Youtube. But I think some of you might like them, so I would recommend to give them a try and download their album The Tide and The Current. Eric- if you want to get into Wilco (one of my absolute favorites), pick up the live release Kicking Television. great cross section and a good representation of them at their best aka Okonokos. An acquired taste perhaps, but one that gets better and better with repeated listening. Just like MMJ.

I definitely agree with you, Penny. This album was an immediate favorite of the year for me...although after seeing them live a few weeks ago, the new material was my least favorite that they covered. Wild Mountain Nation and Furr tunes definitely stood out.
Maybe the new stuff just needs more road-time, but I just hope they don't get pegged as being "that band" who relies on the sound of a past era to become successful. I think (hope) they're more than that.

listening to the monsters of folk academy of music show, phili 11/09/11 great recording! particularly love the m ward sons: vincent o'brien and his guitar on one hundred million years. wards recorded music, though amazingly perfect, can be a bit boring. i think you get a better sense of his energy and real talent hearing him live!!! also, i am not a conor fan but smoke without fire is fucking good. great lyrics! this recording of golden is my favorite, m on back up....and with the same guy who i think is at every mmj show yelling out "JIMMY!!!!" wonder if the guys will do a follow up?
Val, that sounds like an excellent MoF show!! I agree that some of M's studio stuff can be boring-ish sometimes. I love his voice though for sure! I'll have to find some more live M 8)

This is the best live version I could find on video, but there's tighter and heavier ones on offical bootlegs and concert downloads. I caught Television live around 5 years ago at NXNE (North By North East) fest and "1800 or So" was a highlight: it had this trippy Dead-like intro jam and then it rocked hard. They were very rehearsed too, unlike most of their mid 2000s clips on Youtube. Who knows if they are doing a new album, but if they are, it'll not be with Richard Lloyd (he finally had enough of Tom Verlaine and quit 2-3 years ago). Tragic. I love the contrasting guitar styles (Lloyd is more aggressive and technical whereas Verlaine is more slashing and emotional and plays purposely a half-step behind the beat).

It was a great Friday night at a packed Phoenix Concert Hall. CBGB proto-punk icons Television were loose, experimental, jammy and unpredictable for nearly two hours. Several impressive untitled new songs were aired-out, and epic guitar showpieces "Little Johnny Jewel" and 1st encore "Marquee Moon" from their 1977 masterpiece of the same name, didn't disappoint, each jamming well past the ten minute mark. The biggest surprises came on "Days" from 1978's Adventure and "1800 or So" from their self-titled 1992 release - both were more psychadelic Grateful Dead than NYC punk.
Witnessing leader/guitarist/singer Tom Verlaine trade off solos with foil Richard Lloyd makes you wonder why the jam community let alone mainstream rock & roll in general has never noticed or fully embraced these two innovative guitar heroes.
This was Television's first Canadian gig in 14 years and the wait was well worth it. Anyone there expecting a nostalgia trip through Television's 70's heyday had to go home shell-shocked and inevitably disappointed. fuÇk them. Television ain't no fuÇking Doors 1500 or whatever that pathetic prostrating Ray Manzarek calls his cover band. In today's indie rock world, Television remain vital, fresh and relevant. Just ask the hack bands that have attempted to rip them off like Interpol, The Strokes and Kings Of Leon. I hope that one day soon, Television decides to put out another album and tour instead of only playing their usual handful of sporadic shows in select European cities. But then again, nothing they do is conventional. **** (out of 5)

2. Prove It from Marquee Moon had some crowd sing-alongs helping the chorus. Jams were loose.

5. Call Mr. Lee. 1st big jam of the night. Lloyd smoking solos - his best so far.
6. Unknown song that morphed into Days from Adventure. Very trippy Dead like. Reconstructed.
7. Little Johnny Jewel - their first ever single and concert jam showcase. 10 minutes - Verlaine played great - his behind the beat guitar soared. New lyrics throughout - changed lyrics.
8. 1800 or So - from their self-titled album. Fantastic Lloyd soloing and trade-offs with Verlaine and driving Fred Smith bass - 10 minutes.

10. See No Evil - Lloyd showcase - loose
11. ?? Verlaine on slide - fascinating since it had no blues in it. Middle Eastern vibe - mostly instrumental.

Marquee Moon - monster song - locked more into a groove this time out than all out lead jamming.

I Don't Live Today - following up Marquee Moon is impossible, unless you do a tasty cover. Loose, probably rarely rehearsed, but the crowd loved it - Lloyd and Veraline soloing over Hendrix lines was fascinating.
We should just have a Television thread. Thanks for posting your writeup Jaimoe. Verlaine's behind the beat playing is what I love so much. Just brilliant phrasing. As to your point about their lack of popularity amongst musical fan bases, I'm with you. I just wasn't exposed to it earlier. Now they've just blown up and seems like every one is catching up/caught up.
EDIT: Even the first time I listened to it, Jerry's phrasing style is what came to mind immediately, though in that punky sound.

There was a trippy vibe in their sound at NXNE, but it probably was more mystical than Dead. There's nothing even remotely hippy about Television, but they do experiment with different styles and influences. Have you ever checked out Richard Lloyd's guitar lessons on Youtube? They are really cool if not intimidating. He infamously gave Jeff Tweedy lessons around 10 years ago. Love Tweedy's lead work.

I kind of feel that way about The National right now, I've liked them since The Boxer came out & also have Alligator & HV but never really loved them until recently. Oh man! I was late to this party but I'm glad I discovered it. This album can really take you places if you let it. A headphone masterpiece I think. As you say Fully, music is religion and in this case, very literally.
I listened to the whole thing after these two. I'm just completely blown away. I can always depend on you to introduce me to something that I fall in love with. You said you are going to see them play, correct? I'm sure they won't come anywhere close to me, but I would love to go see them.

All of the songs are on there. I think it's only five or six songs, but it several of them are over 10 minutes. I then went and bought it. I liked it that much. I'm going to have to check out Sleep now. Apparently the band came from the rhythm section of that band. Also, on this album, only three people are playing.

I saw Jason Isbell in December in Lexington, KY. Show was at a tiny place and was fuckinawesome!! I also got to see him solo acoustic twice as the opening act for Ryan Adams last winter and he was great in that setting as well. But I prefer the band. If they are near you you MUST try to see them!
And that LIVE From Alabama album is one of my favorite things to listen to for the last several months.

Yep--HH can tell you more but he has a show in his backyard each summer and last year he got Jason Isbell (a few from this forum were there, too) His GF at the time (wife now) Amanda Shires joined him, too..he covered Todd Snider's "Train Song" and also played "TVA"...a crowd favorite :cool: :wink:
He's in the studio (although he's been on his honeymoon for a week or so) working on a new album, and I believe Ryan Adams is assisting him---not sure to what extent--if he's producing or singing on it or co-writing..
PS--the best Drive-by Truckers albums are the Jason albums...(although Southern Rock Opera is pretty stellar)

Angelo- Yep, Jason in our backyard last summer doing a private show for about 120 guests was pretty special. My wife and I have been doing backyard private concerts for 5 years now and have had some pretty great times. Always a special time as everyone gets to hang out, meet and take pictures with the artist. Jason is a pretty quiet guy but was extremely nice and friendly with everyone. We had about 10 people from this forum last year and will probably have a few more than that for this year's upcoming show.

I think Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, and The Dirty South are the 3 best DBT albums. Jason is on DD and TDS. He's also on A Blessing And A Curse which has some great songs but I think is uneven overall.

The Ryan Adams catalog is such a huge undertaking. I know I've really liked what I've heard across Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams solo, RA & The Cardinals and the numerous side projects he has. But man is there just a huge amount of material to go through.

I came across this live concert of Prince's from Montreux in 2009 and I had never heard Empty Room before but this solo is phu-nom-enal. Prince's solo face is right up there with SRV's lol
the whole concert is so good but I've been watching this song on the reg since I came across this.

Relisten updated their site and now mark Soundboard recordings with a nice green SBD so you can quickly find quality recordings for many of the other non-traditionally taped bands like Smashing Pumpkins or in this case, the Drive By Truckers. Great SBD recording from 2004 at Alley Katz in Richmond, VA. This lineup includes Jason Isbell, if you like DBT you should definitely check this out. DANCE BAND OF THE RESISTANCE!

Yea there is a lot, it's overwhelming. I started with Skeleton Tree, made while he was grieving from one of his sons dying. Sort have been working backwards. I would say Boatman's Call or No More Shall We Part would be good places to decide if you want to continue on. Each album has been a slow grower, but then all of a sudden they wallop me and I cant stop listening.
He's like some sort of Gothic, crooner, poet. Not much out there that is comparable.
Let Love In is a great Nick Cave album as is No More Shall we Part and Henrys Dream!
Check out Nick Cave's work on the Lawless soundtrack. You'll find some good stuff on that besides Nick.

Let love in is great. You can also check out Peaky Blinders on Netflix. It's a great series about a British gang set in post WWI Britain. His music is the theme song and is included throughout (as well as a lot of jack white and pj harvey)

He is very unique. I find some of Tom waits's stuff to be somewhat comparable. As I mentioned above the songs they picked for peaks blinders fit in very well with the jack white pj Harvey type sound. That sound track might be a solid place to start as well

I happened to watch this clip last night and really enjoyed it too. Illiterate Light has an MMJ cover (Thank You Too with a surprise jam in the middle) that is definitely worth viewing/listening.
