Title: ***Official*** Black Keys Thread
Post by: capt. scotty on Dec 24, 2010, 12:09 AM
It sucks that no thread from the last year and a half transferred over in this forum, but maybe thats a good thing because now we can have 1 Keys thread instead of 7  :P

Originally it was looking like I'd be in Chicago from Friday to Sunday. Now it's looking like we might leave Thursday morning instead, but its not really up to me. I'll be going to the NYE and NYD shows as of now, but will also be attending Thursday if we leave the day before.

anyone heard the mashups of Big Boi & The Keys?  Nothing to do with Blacroc, think it was just done by a DJ, but they are the tits. I beleive they are tracks off of Big Boi's latest album, all played over beats from Brothers.  All downloadable here: http://www.antiquiet.com/news/2010/12/the-black-keys-big-boi-brothers-of-chico-dusty/ (http://www.antiquiet.com/news/2010/12/the-black-keys-big-boi-brothers-of-chico-dusty/)
Enjoy! I'm helplessly hooked on these

Patricks ex-wife dishin on Dans High school days.  She sounds kinda bitter and jealous to me.

"At the time, Patrick also began a project with a guy named Dan Auerbach. Dan and Pat had played music a couple of times in high school. I knew Dan because he lived across the street from my ex-boyfriend. Dan was a soccer jock who idolized Dave Matthews and G. Love and the Special Sauce. Bands I despised. He was a real macho type who walked around town like a bulldog. He listened to Howard Stern, called his girlfriends "babe" and referred to indie pop as "gay." I never did like Dan much. And I know he never liked me. He and Patrick were complete opposites with little in common except for one thing: insatiable ambition."

Here is the link to the article

Thanks for posting this Tater. I read the article that she wrote. It was nice to hear a little inside information about how the band started. I can see where she's coming from, but good lord, did you have to air your dirty laundry out. I thought Dan is still married? If he is she didn't have to call him out for cheating on his wife, especially when she admitted to cheating on Pat. She shouldn't be the one pointing the finger...even if she dislikes Dan (which clearly she does). She came across as a very jealous ex. The Black Keys are still doing just fine without her, and I'm sure that pisses her off.

Well, if you've been in a relationship with someone for nine years, presumably there were some good years in there and for at least some part of those years (presumably yet again) you loved the person you were with. Then you break up, for whatever reason and part ways, but the person you were in a relationship with is a musician with the opportunity to use media to comment on what's happened and not only takes this opportunity, but does it in a (seemingly) pretty careless way.

Under those circumstances I think she handled it well and tells a pretty nuanced story without pointing fingers. I don't think the same thing can be said for Patrick... If you haven't read the Rolling Stone interview that the Black Keys did a while back (before the ex-wifes piece), then here's some quotes:

QuoteCarney, meanwhile, is coming off of a rough divorce. He and his wife were married two years but together for nine, and according to pretty much everyone involved, that was about eight and a half too many. "It was really fucked up." Carney says, sucking on a cigarette outside the band's trailer. He says she slept with his best friend, lied to him for years, bilked him for money. By the end, Carney was depressed, drinking a lot, and had gained 25 pounds.

"Homeboy was miserable," Auerbach says. "He was being manipulated mentally and emotionally. It was so draining." Carney finally broke it off last July, with a phone call while his wife was in Europe. ("The ultimate pussy move," he admits.) He says it cost him a quarter of a million dollars, plus health insurance and a monthly alimony check: "Totally worth it."

QuoteLast February, Auerbach put out a well-received solo album called Keep It Hid. There was only one problem: He didn't tell Carney. "I was fucking pissed," Carney says. "Everyone knew but me. I was mad at Dan. I was mad at our manager. I was mad at everybody." He worried Auerbach had moved on, that he might quit the group. For a few months last spring, the two hardly spoke. They weren't sure they'd make another record.

"I'd played him the songs," Auerbach says in his defense. "Maybe I didn't explain that there was a record coming, but I didn't know until it was pretty much done." Besides, he says: "I didn't feel like I could share a lot with Pat toward the end of [his marriage]. His ex-wife was really cock-blocking our relationship."

Eventually, says Carney, he realized that his anger "was really misdirected anger I had toward [my wife]." After they split, he and Auerbach talked it out, and they realized how important the band was to both of them. "Then we hugged and made up," says Auerbach. "And it's been all good ever since."
(Read the whole interview here: http://theblackkeysfanlounge.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/rolling-stones-black-keys.pdf (http://theblackkeysfanlounge.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/rolling-stones-black-keys.pdf))

In my opinion she has the right to respond to that and tell her side of the story.

No doubt she has the right to tell her side of the story. But Dan and Pat were giving an interview. She's a writer, and as a writer she did what writers do. But to me she came across bitter. The Keys gave a handful of sentences worth of material to Rollingstone. She wrote a novel herself about it. I think what drove her to write her side of the story were the little things. Pat saying he gave up a quarter mil and monthly checks, but it's worth it. She clearly hates Dan, but at the end of day Pat and Dan are still together like brothers. That's what's pissing her off.

What do you mean by this? Im actually even more excited for this one, because while I think Brothers is a great stand alone album, its not my favorite sound overall for the Keys.

I loved brothers. The keys experience is really changing for the worse. A year ago I saw them play a tiny outdoor venue called Iroquois Ampitheater. Now, they headline the biggest festivals in the nation. For certain bands, like MMJ, bigger doesn't necessarily mean worse (to an extent). The black keys are meant to be intimate and LOUD. In most cases I try not to be selfish about a bands fame, but in this case I care. The last couple shows I've seen by them haven't been good because it's not the same behind thousands of people. If the new record sucks, it could work in my advantage to see some old songs live. If it's awesome, the shows will be bigger (and worse). It's bittersweet either way

That is an understatement! I don't dig this article at all. It is an engrossing read no doubt but I feel like she shouldn't really have put all that stuff out there. I don't even get that much of a jerk vibe from Pat. Seems just like she was a batshit crazy alcoholic and he had to get outta there to save his sanity.

On a side note, I preordered this album like a sucker, on the promise that I'd be delivered a download of Lonely Boy today. No such luck. Anyone else getting shafted in that department?

Love the new record.  Gold on the Ceiling, Little Black Submarines, and of course Lonely Boy are the standouts for me, now.  Listened to it all day @ work and loving it.  Really enjoyed their live streaming concert on MTV Hive last night, they sounded great, too.

Ticketmaster fucks me once again.  I was on the website at 9:59, still could not get a single ticket to the MSG show, but there somehow is about 7500 tickets on StubHub already

I consider you to be like the Cardinals with Pujols.  Sucks right now that you didn't get the tickets, but in the long run it probably wasn't worth $60 for shitty seats and a 75 minute show that poorly recreates the songs from the last two albums.  I've seen them in concert twice now and I think I'll just stick to enjoying the albums from here on out.   Spend that hard earned money on a MMJ, Wilco, Radiohead, Avetts or Delta Spirit show, just to name a few.  Plenty of other good concert talent out there to be had (back to the baseball analogy)!

It came to about $71 per ticket here in Philly. I'll pass and see 4 J Roddy shows for that  ;D

I picked up tickets for their Montreal show in March.  Looking forward to it, although I miss the days of paying $20 to see them.

As for their latest album, it's quite good, but not as good as "Brothers" or their earlier stuff.  Actually, this might be one of their weakest albums, but that just shows how good their other albums have been.

i still think they're great live but i'm kinda over seeing them....love the albums but won't pay the prices or deal with the crowds---i'm glad I got to see them so much in the past years, they deserve all the accolades they're getting but unless i somehow get to see them in a smaller venue, i doubt i'll ever see them again live..

MMJ are the only band I'd deal with that for..

agree with all of this. 25$ to see them in iroquois amphitheater 15 months ago! it holds 2500 seats! It was one of my favorite shows EVER.  The smaller venue shows were awesome, cause it was always LOUD and intimate. the only way i can see them being fun.

At hangout fest after 1.5 songs we walked away from them. The crowd was awful, the sound was awful, and unfortunately thats how they're going to be from now on. On the last day of their NYE run last year in chicago we were in the back, and after 2 previous nights, it just sucked. They lack longevity and replay value in my mind.

and on NYE they played for almost 2 hours. weak. im rambling now.

Id never pay over $35-40 to see them live, especially in an arena or amphitheater. Theyre fun live, but if you put their albums on shuffle and crank them up in your car, you getting almost the same experience.

As for El Camino, I find myself liking the 2nd half (Sister -> Mind Eraser) much more than the first half. Money Maker, Run Right Back, and Gold on the Ceiling dont do much for me. Hell Of A Season is becoming a favorite and I dont think Ive seen anyone anywhere single it out. The reggaed out breakdown is awesome.

Really interesting interview/article here:

http://www.americansongwriter.com/2011/11/the-black-keys-brothers-in-arms/ (http://www.americansongwriter.com/2011/11/the-black-keys-brothers-in-arms/)

This section is pretty telling, IMO:

Brothers had become the best-selling alternative album of 2010, and The Black Keys found themselves saddled with a new list of expectations from their label, their fans and themselves. They'd gone from Midwest underdogs to Nashville pack leaders in less than twelve months. Recording another album as soon as possible was one method of keeping things under control. This way, they wouldn't risk falling down the rabbit hole by giving themselves half a year – their typical break between album cycles – to overthink Brothers' success.

...

There was a problem, though. In their rush to make a new album that didn't feel like a response to the last one, The Black Keys hadn't written any songs. With past recording sessions, the guys had done their homework beforehand, coming into the studio with something – a chord progression, a lyric idea, a drum sound – to get the wheels rolling. This time, they started from scratch every single day, splitting the songwriting duties three ways with co-producer Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse. Songs would be written in hour-long bursts of inspiration, then reworked several times over the course of a few days. Once everyone settled on an arrangement, things would start moving faster, with most of the tunes being recorded in one or two takes. Still, it took a long time to reach that point.

...

"We were in the studio for 41 days," says Auerbach, "but it was off and on. We'd go on tour, come home for a week, go out on tour again, come back for another week. It took longer than any record we've ever done. And everything – everything – was labored over."

The more I have listened to this record Hell Of A Season might be the best track.  Little Black Submarines has to be my 1b then.

For anybody interested in Southern California, the Black Keys are doing a private show at the Sayers Club in LA for 98.7 radio. No need to worry about seeing them in an arena but the only way in is to win tickets!

Even if you're not in SoCal, I'd sincerely appreciate your help in clicking and sharing the link! Thanks so much!
