Title: Phosphorescent
Post by: Murph on Jan 12, 2011, 04:10 PM
I know there are a bunch of fans around here.  I've listened to Pride about 3 times today, great snow day record.

On Aquarium Drunkard now, ripe for the pickin' for all you Phos and Neil Young fans!  Not sure that there's much there to offer that the original didn't...perhaps a bit fuller sound...but still worth a listen.

Yeah, I saw the tracklist and video today on Pitchfork.  The first thing I thought listening to the song, is 'damn, has he been in contact with Jim?'.  While it still has the alt-country vibe over the top, there's that beat underneath.  Not that it sounds like Jim's new song, but that he also appears, at least on this song, to be using some different elements.  I dig that though, just like I love the new Jim song, and am looking forward to the album.

Me too.   I want to buy another Phosphorescent album that I don't have to hold me over.   I have Here's To Taking It Easy, Willie and Pride.   I noticed there are two older albums and an EP.   Are you familiar?   Not sure which to buy.

Damn, Club Cafe is tiny. Ive usually never even heard of the bands that play there, I dont think it can hold more than a 150-200. I also dont think ill still be in Pittsburgh by the end of March  :undecided:

Just listened to that Song for Zula above. Awesome. Sounds like Phosphorescent and at the same time it doesnt at all.

I would absolutely love to get to his Philly show but money is a bit tight with so much other stuff going on. I haven't heard any of his stuff before Pride, I don't even know how much more there is after that. Sounds like I should check it out though.

I seriously need to move to Philly already considering the amount of time I spend in that city. If anyone knows of any jobs in the city please let me know! I have my eye on one but I'm not confident I'll even get an interview.

Maybe you can join Jim Halpert and Darryl Philbin at that sports marketing company that Jim helped get off the ground.    A long commute from Scranton, but it sounds promising.

Jim is too happy for that though, which is a good thing.

Yeah, I'm glad Jim is in a good place...but at times it also comes off as a cheesy place.

If he is happy, I want songs about hard core sex and eating dirt with no abandon.

Liked this album from first listen, but now I think its going to end up being my favorite. Ive always liked the bare sound many of his songs had since I first heard of him around 5 years ago, but hoped musically there was a progression. HTTIE was a step towards what I was looking for, Muchacho is like a whole staircase towards that. Favorites are Zula, Muchacho's Tune, and Quotidian Beasts, but there isnt a song I dont like.

Still cant believe Phosphorescent is coming to the Burgh next week. Here and Bloomington are by far the smallest cities on his tour, everywhere else is basically cities everyone tours. Pretty stoked.
Title: Re: Phosphorescent

This is darn near a perfect album.  From Zula to booty dropping Ride On Right On to Quotidian Beast, the quintessential (I wish Jim or the Jacket still wrote stuff like this) song.  It just reminds me of Steam or PWW in its classic slow build to climax structure.
I have to find a way to see them next week.

I decided to see what all the fuss was about and discovered the last 4 LPs are available here for one price of $42.50 plus shipping.  Based on your comments, seems a safe purchase, and includes the new album, out this week.

I saw Phosphorescent last night.  Great show.  The set was most heavy on the last two records, which is what I expected.  The new stuff all sounded great live.

My only complaint is that I would have loved another guitar player in the band.  The instrumentation, besides Matthew on guitar, was two keyboards (one piano sound and one organ sound), bass, a percussionist, and a drummer.  I understand how the two keyboards were needed particularly for some of the new songs, but I would have liked the sound of another guitar in the mix.

Matthew did some stuff solo, which was very cool to see as well.

Glad to hear it was good Whippy.  A friend and I decided to go late last week but it was sold out and I didn't want to mess with craigslist.  For another time perhaps

Nice. Seeing them tonight in Pittsburgh for the first time, pretty damn excited. Also recently discovered/started listening to Strand of Oaks since him/them are opening and really liking them as well so just an unexpected bonus. Never been to the venue theyre playing here, but Im pretty sure it only holds 200-300, so I was surprised to see it didnt sell out until today.

What did Phossy play from before the last 2 albums? Im personally hoping for My Dove, My Lamb tonight but I'll be happy with whatever I get.

I only know the last two records, so can't tell you what was played from earlier records.  It wasn't much as there were only 1 or 2 songs I didn't recognize.

So this show is tonight, in Bloomington Indiana, home of Indiana University who plays their huge Sweet 16 game tonight against Syracuse. I'm a tiny bit bummed I will be missing the game since I have Indiana going to the finals in one of my brackets, and have Syracuse going to the finals in my other bracket. Both will lose to LOUISVILLE in the end but...

I have a feeling that no one from the college or the town will be at this show, which is in a very small venue to begin with. Show time is same as game time!

Tonight me and my 2 friends will get a private Phosphorescent/Strand of Oaks show!!! pretty sweet!!!

Enjoy LBSUNFLWR! Saw Strand of Oaks and Phossy last night in Pittsburgh and it was fantastic. Honestly, I want to drive to Bloomington and see both bands again, it was that good. I woke up a little after 6am today and couldnt fall back asleep, still feeling a rush from this show. Phossy said it was literally 10 yrs since he played in the Burgh, I told him thanks for that but forgot to ask why the long drought?!

New Anhedonia
Muchachos Tune (first time played! albeit choppy!)
Terror in the Canyons
The Quotidian Beasts (talk about highlight of the show )
Song for Zula
Torn Up Praise
???? (I was born with all this luck)
Wolves (solo)
Heavin Sittin Down (solo)
Los Angeles

Honestly felt like he played twice that amount, but thats right. Strand of Oaks opener played almost exactly 45 minutes, Id be surprised if Phosphorescent did more than an hour but it felt much longer, and in a good way.

nice, thank you!!

It's a 2 hour drive from us and show starts at 9:30, so an hour set may be just right as far as getting back on the road and home at a somewhat decent time for work tomorrow.

Quality vs. quantity, you know? But I'm very excited to hear this stuff live!!

That is odd, I think Phosphorescent was always made up with 2 guitars.  I do recall reading that his previous guitarist had left though, I guess they just never replaced him.

A Charm/A Blade is my early favorite track by the way

Just got tix a few days ago to see him in Newtown, CT. It looks like a small theater he playing in and I managed to get a couple of front row seats. I can't wait to see him but I'm a little disappointed at the brevity of the setlist (at least on paper/monitor).

Looking back at the set, it really felt much longer than that, but what I posted is correct (sans song I wasnt sure of). Take that for what its worth. Show was supposed to start at 8pm, opener Strand of Oaks literally walked out at 8:01 and was off at 8:44. I dont recall when exactly Phossy started, but he couldnt have played much over an hour. I got home just after 11pm , so based on driving/chill time/post show talking I think an hour set is about right. Maybe this venue runs a tight ship though.

Ive become a newfound Strand of Oaks fan as I started listening since he/they were the opener, and dont miss it. Certainly made me not even second guess Phossy's set (length), or Phosphorescent if youre not into the whole brevity thing

Definitely good to hear scotty. There's no mention of Strand of Oaks opening for this show on either artist's website, bummer. This show has a strange feel to it though, like I said, I got front row seats early this week and the show's been on sale for a while. I can't believe they were still available. Also, on my Jambase app, this show isn't even listed.

Did you get a chance to look at the merch table? Anything decent?

Last night was fantastic. I didn't keep track of setlist. But people gave some requests and he said "why not?" a few times and played those requests. Smallest venue I have ever seen a show in ever!! And despite the huge game going on in the bar in the room next door, there were probably 150 people watching the show. Capacity at The Bishop is 200!! How incredible they played there.

I was so close that my legs were touching the stage during Phosphorescent's set, and they were on from 10:30-midnight!! The band was excellent, drummer especially, and the 2 keyboard players.

What a night!! Well worth the 4 hours of sleep I got before work today.

Strand of Oaks were great too. Just 2 guys, drums and guitar and it never felt it was lacking anything to me.

As for merch: cd's, vinyl and 3-4 Phosphorescent tshirts. one with Muchahco album cover on a white shirt. $20 I think.

If anybody finds a setlist and can post it that'd be excellent!! Thank you! :)

Hey all- My name is Hayden Bates and I am the promoter for the Phosphorescent show at the Edmond Town Hall in Newtown, CT on April 19th. This is a special benefit show for the theater. Over the past few years, I have promoted this "Live at the Edmond Town Hall" series, bringing in The Low Anthem, The Bill Frisell and Sam Amidon Duo, and Brown Bird. All proceeds go to restoring/renovating the Edmond.  The place was built in 1929, and while incredibly beautiful, needs a little TLC.  To date, this series has raised a considerable sum, and this Phossy show will be the first to show-off the Edmond's brand new, state-of-the-art PA system. I'm presently fundraising for a Bluray projector system, a new screen, a new lighting system, and much, much more. Come on out, see a great show, and support a great cause.

I agree O, great show, Wolves was great, I just wish his set was longer. He only played for about an hour. Its a nice little theater there.

And thank you Hayden for asking if "the people from Plains, PA are here yet" as soon as you stepped on stage. That was very thoughtful and much appreciated. We'll certainly be back as long as you keep bringing in great artists like Phos.

Oh and I have no clue what the song for Hayden was. And yes the guy on keys was an animal, it appeared early on in the show he hurt a finger on his left hand. He was holding it for a few seconds, then shook it off, swigged some Bud and went back to pounding the keys.

Thank you guys for coming to the show.  Definitely a short set (I had it at 65 mins), but it was quality over quantity and right in-line with the other dates on this tour.  The band said we had by far the best sound of the whole tour.  Glad you made it in time, Angelo - was worried about the rush hour traffic slowing your trip.  Did you guys stay for the after party?  It was pretty epic.

The song to close the first set was "At Death (A Proclamation)."  My favorite Phos song -check out the Daytrotter version.

So, I got a call from their tour manager about 20 mins before they got to the venue.  Matthews Fender Jazzmaster had just died and they needed a guitar quickly as a fill-in.  I got my Washburn HB-35 as a back up, and found a Fender Tele rental about 30 miles away.  He played the Tele all night and then cracked out the Washburn for Randy Newman's Days of Heaven.  I ended up buying the Tele from the rental place -his belt buckle carved a pattern in the back of it and the place was not happy.  Fun night!
Title: Re: Phosphorescent show in Newtown
Post by: EmmmDeee on Apr 25, 2013, 03:19 PM
Coming to this blog gave me some long needed insight in regards to Friday's show in Newtown, which thanks to shows like this one is both giving local residents a reason to put Newtown on the map.  I was looking forward to the show because I felt like this was a mistake or something, to get a band like "Phos" at a local venue, a band which has national recognition right now, not ten years ago. A band with a new album (Muchacho) which is getting favorable reviews from Web Sites selling it. A band invited to stop in at local FM studios like Fordham's WFUV, which are very much in a position to help this band as they head thru NYC.  To see this band, right now in a venue like Newtown seemed like the stars had aligned just right.

As Matthew said early on in the show to the crowd and this is not a direct quote but you  get the picture - "Excuse us if we don't know quite how to act in places as nice as this but - we are used to a seedier venues"  an obvious reference to paying their dues. But "Phos" is now the headliner, and indeed invited to classier venue's.  I am still trying to figure out how the band members all managed to be drinking bottled beers, and the fans were not able to buy a malt beverage, but that is a different battle for us fans to fight.

Now I can't claim to be a "Phos" junkie in terms of music, but I have noticed them getting more publicity than in the past. And I did catch their video on YouTube from last week where they played at WFUV's studios. The video was good, and the sound was good.  The fan composition at the Newtown show was both local fans and others who traveled some distance to see the band. The mood when the lights dimmed was very up-beat, it was a Friday night, their promoter introduced the band by inviting all of the fans back to an "after-party" event after the concert. The event started off as well as could be expected, and I'll say Edmond Town Hall was filled with a buzz of excitement.

I was not up on all their personnel changes until reading the lineup change here, and so did not know they are playing with one less guitar player than on previous tours, but that is a fact of bands changing their cast over time.  It was also nice to learn why Matthew was playing a Black Fender in Newtown, since I recall him with a trademark green Fender on every video and album cover I have seen. Again thanks to this site, now I understand why it was missing from last Friday's show. What was missing to me as they launched into their set was – that "full" musical sound that I had become used to from their albums. But this was not a studio either, so the sound was fine. I think it should be expected that their live show not be 'note for note' like their studio albums. What fun would that be!

The acoustics in Newtown have been upgraded recently, so the band sounded as good as I can ever remember.  My only real complaint was that the set was shorter than we were hoping for (a fact I can't clam as mine alone). To me it seemed like just when the show was getting hot, the band broke for an encore too early.  And none of us in Newtown last Friday cared what their standard set length had been to date on this tour. I have read comments like "We had Quality over Quantity", which is true and all well and good, but this band has a half dozen albums under its belt, and for a main event their set list was just a bit too short than I am used to.

Hopefully time and experience will teach the band that when they get the both the band and audience whipped into a frenzy of excitement, and it is okay not to always play it safe, so feed off of the crowd energy. The band obviously has fans that will travel to see them. My advice would be to take some chances with songs not in the "standard" set.  From what I read, the band did what they have done at other shows recently for the encore, which were all solo songs by Matthew.  Ordinarily, that change of pace from band to solo would have been fine as a transition if they had gone back to the full band, but the rest of the band never returned.

Now before everyone jumps down my throat for not drinking the "kool aid", my personal experience over 30 years of concert going has been that most acts do play for around 90-120 minutes, with some exceptions as some play longer. "Phos" made a great gesture to "meet and greet" the concert goers after the event in Newtown, and that was a calculated risk that would have pleased some fans, but left others like me wanting more music. Hopefully they will be back soon with more touring under their belt, and we will see how they perform as they have momentum now and they should know it. But the same phrase has been said about a lot of bands.  IMHO, this is not the time to play it too safe, let other bands do that and we won't remember them either....

Remember this is a war, not a battle, and yes I do feel better now venting a bit, because I was not there for the epic after-party, I was there for an epic concert. BTW - thank you bloggers who are also teachers, as I have always been accused of the 'run on' sentence. I have a terminal case.  As for the nit pickers who find fault in every blog posting out there, I won't get petty so have at it.

While I wanted them to play longer (expected 90 minutes probably), when I only paid $15 for a ticket for an opening band plus an hour of Phossy, its hard to complain.

This reads like it was written by a high schooler, what with "long needed insight"(a week?), "cool aid" (kool aid), and "been around concert going long enough". Very dramatic.

The runon sentences make it very difficult to garner your message. You can correct them by separating independent clauses with a comma and a conjunction or just use a semicolon between independent clauses. You want to get your point across, but your grammar errors are not helping. You can edit posts to fix these things. I'm an English teacher; I'm not a grammar nazi, but I do see that you need some assistance with this. You obviously feel very passionate about what you saw at this show. Get your message across without losing the passion by fixing your errors.

It was fantastic.   Maybe my favorite show of the year so far.   Beautiful weather, early evening set.   They are tight now too!   They did Reason to Quit which was a highlight as well as the Los Angeles closer.   New stuff sounded really good live.   Love the way the band does those songs.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the looping solo version of Wolves, but I had a version of that already from Muchacho De Lujo.   The "full band" version of it from this Live At the Music Hall is awesome.   The lap steel solo is so nice.

And I've hear a LOT of live versions of Los Angeles but this one takes the cake.

Are you getting a lot of attention now   ahhhhhhahhhhh

Yeah I'm ready for another album!!
I've seen him a few times at some small places and I can't wait to see him again.

Two years ago at Forecastle they evacuated the place bc of lightning.  My friends were working and had a tent so we stayed inside during the evacuation. It happened right after Phosphorescent started their set. Before they let people back in he was on stage holding a baby. We got to talk to him for a minute too.

Maybe he's just been busy having children.

See them live!!!!!  I wasn't too into the new album, thought it was okay...besides Around the Horn, that one's a beast...but saw them live...MIND BLOWN.  It was killer.  Probably helped that I was on the rail, front row center, and I don't do that  too often, but it was a great time.  He reached out and grabbed my buddy's hand while singing, we had a small amount of banter back and forth towards the end of the show...everyone in the crowd was convinced my buddy and I knew Phossy, it was kinda funny.

Then after the show, we meet Nick Swardson in a bar.

Crazy night.

But go see Phossy live, no doubt!
