couldn't find the old thread, maybe we lost it.
I just saw a Subaru commercial last night with M. Ward's 'Her Comes the Sun Again'. I had never seen it before, perhaps it's new.
Are we going to get some new M. Ward dates soon or what?
WE got the Newport Folk Fest w/ special guests....unsure what that may mean but he is definitely due for a new album/tour.

Can't wait to see him at Newport...hoping for a Boston date around then too.

(Jealousy is an ugly thing. ;))
Sorry BH...but you know the drill. M.Ward lives in Portland and is most likely a home body like many of us here. When you live in Portland, it is easy to stick close to home.
I've seen him now with She and Him and MOF but I NEED to see an M solo show.
Agreed that M. Ward solo is a must see. That's what probably clinched my decision to plan on Newport Folk Fest again this year.

as much as I like MOF there is nothing like an M. Ward solo show.
I'm getting to see M. Ward open for Bright Eyes at Wolf Trap in June. I scored second-row seats in the pre-sale. The last M. Ward show I saw was in D.C. in Feb. '09 I believe.
The first time I saw M. Ward was during the original MOF tour back in '04 at Club Laga in Pittsburgh.

Most definitely.
Awesome show last night! The Crystal Ballroom was not even half full (that will happen on a 3 day run, Tuesday-Thursday), which made for plenty of dancing room. He threw down some of my favs (Helicopter! Chinese Translation! Sad, Sad Song!). And his covers had me twisting, no freaking joke (may have been influenced by me wearing my saddle shoes ;)).
Check out the setlist here:

I wondered if you'd gone! Are you going to all three shows? I'm going tomorrow night #3. With Baby MMJ in tow. I hope she let's me stay for a while - we haven't had much practice yet (at all) with the ear muff thingies. I really want to stay late to hear Doug Martsch's dj set but I think that's probably wishful thinking..

Wow that's a great setlist. I wonder how much he's going to mix up the songs each night. If he does, I'd bet right now this one would be my favorite (the 3 favs you list are also mine!)
Right in the Head
Poison Cup
Fisher of Men
that setlist looks awesome!
M. Ward is opening for alison krauss union station at the Berkeley Greek the day after the Oakland Fox MMJ show. We're thinking about going.
He's apparently working on a new solo album again (finally) and is planning to add more solo dates (just him and a guitar) in the near future!

Must be enjoying the new kitchen my friend designed for him and his lady ;)

Nice! Did it have a built in Creme Brulee torch?
Is his lady friend anyone famous? Or just the luckiest gal west of the Mississippi?

I think she is just a regular gal. My friend mainly worked with her and said she was super nice. She had a few interactions with him, but mainly felt like she kept putting her foot in her mouth....

I saw M. Ward play last night in Nashville. I've loved his music for ages, but seeing him live (this was my first time) just changed everything for me. Very pleasant show - and I'm not trying to minimize my enjoyment by calling it pleasant. But his music/voice tends to just put me in a dreamlike state - almost a haze of pleasantness. I wish he got more attention. Alan Jackson had a free concert last night on Music Row and the people were just streaming everywhere, but for the 1000 or so people who saw M.Ward, they got to see true talent. Plus I really don''t enjoy pop country music. I'm not really being coherent today; four hours of sleep will do that to you. Hopefully, I got my point across.

I've seen that but haven't listened to it yet.
I used to have a crush on Zooey until I watched that terrible show she is in. As great as her singing voice is, her talking voice is equally bad. Maybe it's just that show, though. I don't remember it bothering me on Elf.
I got it a couple of weeks ago on vinyl pre-order. Its nice, the kids love it, I get me some M. Ward. According to an email I got yesterday, they may be (erroneously) sending me a second copy. If so, I'll make it available here, maybe a holiday raffle.

In fairness, I only watched the first and third episodes. The first I thought had some funny parts, but was still kind of indifferent on it. After the third, I was not a fan.

hey John- do you know if that date was part of a new tour or just a random one-off? I went looking for other tour dates / confirmation .... would love to catch him again and may consider making the trip to Portland... I did see that show on the State Theatre website but no other dates anywhere else; although, my google skills are poor. I was hoping for a Boston date before / after.

Kyle, I see you found the other dates and imagine you'll hit up the House of Blues show, as its closer. Portland is about 30-45 minutes longer to get to than Boston from here, but the Portland show is on a Saturday night, so that's where I'll be. If any forumites are planning on the 5/5 Portland, ME show, let me know and we can break bread and wine (or beer) prior.

For what its worth, Michele will be joining me for this one and we will stay around the corner at the Eastland Park Hotel. Its where MMJ stayed the day I met all 5, where DBT stayed the night I met 2 crew plus Cooley and Hood, so maybe an M. sighting is possible. I'm looking for rates but the site is buggy. I'll give 'em a call. Some reviews suggest its m'eh, but if its good enough for Yim, its good enough for me! I've stayed there twice and you can't beat the location and parking situation, too.
EDIT - Eastland Park is closed starting in April until some time in 2013, major upgrades as it becomes part of the Westin hotel chain. The next best bet seems to be another place around the corner from the State Theatre, Holiday Inn's Portland By The Bay (http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/portland/pwmdt/hoteldetail). Rates are around $120/night.

I like solo M.Ward so much better than I care for She & Him. I'm so excited about this new album. So far, my favorites are "The First Time I Ran Away", "Crawl After You", and "Clean "Slate". I really like the use of strings on "Crawl After You".
It's also great music to clean the bathroom to; although, I'm currently trying to avoid dealing with sweeping/mopping the floor in there. It will have to be done though. My avoidance technique has not proved successful in keeping the house clean.

Thanks, Fully! Listening during my planning block. I've got the vinyl on preorder and tix for early May. Some country twang in this first track...
My avoidance technique has not proved successful in keeping the house clean.
must listen tonight! thanks, fully!
Excellent! Listening party tonight!?!?
vinyl purchased.....
I'm listening to it right now. It's pretty good - a bit more "kick-up shoes" than his previous albums.
Well, the album slows down in the 2nd half, so so much for my comment above.
my review after one listen is mild disappointment. But, his previous stuff is "grower" material. I think I want him to be something he just isn't. But I love his voice.
New Daytrotter. This album is spectacular. It feels way more like an M. Ward album to me than Hold Time did. It takes me to that happy(sad) place again.

Just opened my vinyl. Great package. Album cover fold out poster, digital download, merge sticker and best of all, an actual wasteland companion.

Fixed, thanks JY! I was using the "share" feature and obviously that was my problem.

why can't i get a flickr pic to work
Any photo link posted has to include the file extension (ie. .jpg, .gif, .bmp, etc.). With Flickr, choose the size you want, then right-click the image and click "properties". Then, copy and paste the URL, which should end ".jpg".
Just stumble across this epic version of Carolina. :o

I would agree with all of this. Album is good but I wasnt blown away or anything.
Will definitely take a lot more listens to figure out if I like it more than Hold Time or not, but first spin says no. Then again, the more laidback songs on HT like Stars of Leo, 100 Million Years, and especially Blake's View took me awhile to realize they were a few of my favorites on the album.
I doubt I could find it now, but I read a review of Wasteland Companion this week that perhaps put it best.
"Its another M. Ward album."
Can't wait to see him in May!
Playing Prospect Park in Brooklyn on August 7th. Yo La Tengo opening.

I have been listening to monsters of folk and I am addicted. What M. Ward album would be a good place to start? Thanks for the help!

Post War is the best "full band" sounding album in my opinion. And Transfiguration of Vincent and Transistor Radio are both spectacular albums that show his more subtle sound and amazing guitar work. You really can't go wrong, but these are the best three IMO.

I am leaning towards Post War or Transfiguration of Vincent. I love the full band sound of post war, but from what I can tell by first glance, correct me if I am wrong, ToV seems more conceptual, which I love.

I think you hit it right on the money. ToV just really highlights his songwriting and the things I love best about him. It's hard to explain. All I know is, if you have got to this point, you will probably own them all by next year anyway!
Transfiguration is my favorite of his albums too. It has a dream-like quality that I never get tired of.

Next year?! More like this holiday season (unless next year means the first of January)! Damn Post War is great! I am almost positive ToV will be even more enjoyable based on my personal tastes in music (I really love the more conceptual albums that connect everything together as a whole). Damn this guy is good. Poison Cup, To Go Home, Chinese Translation, Requiem and Today's Undertaking are some of my favorites atm. Yet, Post-War is probably my favorite. It is so relaxing to listen to.
Speaking of To Go Home, it's single (ep?) is also awesome!

that ep has quality neko case, nels cline and jim j. content, too!
gonna spread a little love for Hold Time here. it spent at least a year in the cd changer after i bought it. each of his albums has been a revelation in connection. when they hit, they hit.
