Post by: sweatboard on Apr 02, 2011, 11:20 AM
What record is the acoustic version of Chin up Cheer up on?  I know Suicide Handbook is one of the albums not released what are the others?

I know I shouldn't have started a new thread but I just need to know real quick and I couldn't find it.

THANKS!

The Whiskeytown "Forever Valetine" sessions has a great version of "Don't Wanna Know Why" and the song "Caroline."

The Pink Heart sessions has some good rockin' stuff on it. "Mega-Superior Gold" is one of my all-time favorite Adams' songs.

And this isn't a session or something that hard to find, but the Crossroads video and the tracks of him and Elton John performing is pretty good to have.

This site, www.answeringbell.com (http://www.answeringbell.com), can help a ton. It hasn't been updated since 2007 but lists a ton of information on sessions and where certain songs appear.

There are backing musicians, but it's pretty stripped down.  Benmont Tench (of the Heartbreakers) plays piano/Hammond on a couple of the tracks and adds a lot to the vibe IMO.

picked this up today. Listened a few times now and agree with what everyone has said - its got some real pretty tunes and I love the stripped back feel of it. Benmont adds some great warmth to it with his keys.

I do hope he picks up an electric guitar a little bit more next time though...

"Lucky Now" might be the greatest song he wrote on this record.  I only say that because I have some slight knowledge of his personal life.  It's pretty impressive that he can be this genuine at this point.  He's not a Great songwriter just because he can sing.

"I love you and I don't know what to say"

it's the sober version of the country song that says "I love you"

I kind of wish he was drunk.

Then he sings this line.................

"When the night is silent and we seem so far away
Oh I love you when I don't know what to say"

and all is ok in the world.

its a real bummer that I missed these shows by just a few days.  Arrive in San Fran on Wednesday.  Oh well, there's strong rumours that he'll be coming to us early 2012...

Cant wait to get me some more live Ry Ry action.  Last time I saw him he cracked the shits after about an hour and stormed off stage. Which is the complete opposite to the first time I saw him on the Gold tour where he had to get dragged off stage after about 3 1/2 hrs! There was some funny, funny shit going down that night on stage, completely out of his mind by the end of it. Good times!!

It's obvious that Neil put some time into learning Ryan's songs and he adds some really nice touches.  It's to bad Ryan could really care less about Neil and Janis songs.  I think Neil is just used to Eddie Vedder kissing his ass and was shocked when Ryan didn't do the same.

Ok, I just watched "Weather With You" again and it's obvious that Ryan got down on that.  I'm also not sure how much Janis and Neil really contributed to Ryan's performance other than looking at him with wide eyed wonder.  Bottom line, I love Neil, I love Ryan, I really, really loved these performances.  Thanks again Dave.  Awesome  :-*

I didn't realize there was the controversy but I did think it was wierd that there weren't more tracks from Neil and Janis.   I guess Ryan's still a bit of an ass.   It's wierd though cause they (Neil and Janis) really seemed to be loving RAs songs.    I think he could have done 95% of what he did without them so I'm not sure what they expected him to add to their songs.   Either way, those performances from Ryan I think are just spectacular.   Glad you watched.

I used to be but I haven't got anything from them in awhile.  Hmmm.   I wonder if I sign up now if I'll still get it.

Any insight on RA presales?   I guess most presales don't have the best tickets anyway.

E Dub, I'll try chains too, thanks!

it may be livenation thing. the same sort of thing happened to me withthe fleet foxes. I kept getting sold out and bad seats for 10 minutes then I pulled row g or something.

at one point i had center, front row of the lower balcony for this ryan adams show and i decided to try for better. in retrospect that wouldve been awesome

If the Ryan Adams show in Baltimore last night would have been just the music, it would have been one of my favorite shows of the year.  The 30-40 minutes of between-song banter really took away from it, though.

Do other people have this issue with him?  I don't find him endearing or funny, just someone who seems to try way to hard to make it seem like he's not trying or doesn't care.  I will say, though, that he has at least gotten a little less obnoxious over the years.

I was really surprised to hear four whiskeytown songs last night, and he did an amazing cover of Bob Mould's Black Sheets of Rain.

The Peobody Opera House in St. Louis.   It used to be the Kiel Opera House for half a decade but closed in 91.  It just reopened this year with Wilco as the first rock show.   I have not been yet so I'm looking forward to this for many reasons.

Off to see Ryan Adams (with Jason Isbell) tonight.  Should be great.

I know he wont play anything off it but I've got III/IV cranked up.  Still love this record. So much better than what people give it credit for.  There's a hook in every song, you just have to find it... Haha! I just sounded like a Radiohead fan!  ;D

If he wasn't coming to Louisville I would have tried for The Ryman shows too. Would love to see him there but it's just too much on week nights and taking off and I figured they'd be hard to get.

Did you look for a hotel outside of downtown? nothing at all on the Thursday night before already?

I actually like his version of 1989.  I have 3 daughters under the age of 12 and they all LOVE Taylor Swift so I've heard most of her album hit and miss.  I had to laugh because I put on Ryan Adam's version over the weekend while they were all upstairs playing and they all came down when they heard it playing and were seriously confused by who was singing these 'weird' versions of songs by their favorite artist.

not sure why exactly other than it's a really great show.
When I first started collecting Ryan soundboards there were 2 shows everyone talked about: this one and one at a venue called Das Haus 10-17-2006.

I could tell you a few shows I like even more, but if you're looking for highly rated Ryan shows to check out those would be a good start. You can find them on the Live Music Archive.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing what other good shows to check out.  With Ryan Adams, his output is so prolific, it's difficult to know where to start.  I have a number of bootlegs, and a smattering of albums across his solo albums, stuff with The Cardinals, Whiskeytown, and I think The Finger even (including his authorized bootleg albums like the Suicide Handbook), but there's just so much music.  So yes, any great shows out there that you would like to suggest would be most welcome!!

In 2007 he did a few months of acoustic shows they called The Blue Cave. A few of my favorites are 06-24-2007 Burlington, VT and 7-11-2007 in Louisville, KY. Also 7-23 and 7-24 in CA. To me the shows throughout June and July of 2007 are my favorites.

And Halloween 2007 in NYC was probably the best show I went to.

2005 and 2006 Cardinals shows are pretty great too. 👍🏻

As far as albums I'd say Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights and Love Is Hell are my top 3.
And Whiskeytown Strangers Almanac is incredible. The two disc deluxe especially with the acoustic Avenues. His voice is so perfect on that.

Unreleased albums I love 48 Hours. Walls and Like The Twilight are two of his BEST songs... and they're unreleased!!

If you don't have any of this and need let me know.

Not a good one either.

Very disappointing. Obviously we've known for a while that he's a pretty big asshole but this is up another level entirely. Glad our band is full of good guys.

the items with "Ava" are clearly the most damaging. The R Kelly joke makes me believe he knew this girl was underage but the NYT was clear that she was not forward about her age but still...

The way I understood it, she only lied about her age when he was like "you need to tell me that you're 18" but it wasn't exactly clear. No matter how it's interpreted, its pretty terrible.

The Old 97s song, Crash on the Barrelhead is about RA.  He's been known to be a complete asshole.  I've spent hundreds of hours listening to his solo and Whiskeytown, but that number will not be climbing anytime soon. He's put himself in a category with The Orwells.

I totally agree with you.

The articles I've read said he asked her several times how old she was. To me that says he had an idea she wasn't at least 18. If he thought all along she was of age and asked her once and she confirmed, that would for most people be enough IMO. To ask her a few more times says he either had doubts or knew she was lying. No way was he convinced she was 18 but he continued his texting/sexting anyway.

Now the FBI is investigating and sounds like he could be in some serious shit.
