I thought I remember somebody talking about this band before but couldn't find anything. My interest is high after listening to this live session....

I believe our mutual friend Ghosts is friends with them?
Ghosts is a fan (friend too?), and so am I -- Leave Ruin is a great record.
Thanks for the link, BH!
Yeah! I was thinking about starting a new Oaks thread as my old one didn't make the transfer, yeah Tims a great dude, its great to see him get more and more recognition, he deserves it.

Ahhhhh, it's all coming back to me now. I've listened to that session about 5 times now. Guess I need the album. Is Pope Killdragon digital release only? Is it the only album?

They just demolished most of the Sterling a couple of years ago. The whole album is kind of a concept album about a kind of alternate reality, post apocalyptic Wilkes-Barre. Which it kind of looks like anyway, Haha.
saw him and joe pug a couple weeks back. really great show. i wish he would have done the jurado cover...that's one of my favorite songs ever.

Ok, so check it out. I want to download this album, and it's one of those name your own price downloads, which I haven't done before. What's reasonable? I would like to support this guy!
I'm pretty sure the actual album download is a set price, it's the demos that are name your own price. He posted on the Strand of Oaks FB that he put them up for free, so doing that I'm sure he's cool with. However throwing a few bucks his way can't hurt either.
Yeah, the album download is $8.99 and is here...

or you can order the CD or Vinyl here....

You've got mail, btw. 8)
Before the demos were name your own price, they were up for $5, if that helps.
Thanks for all the info....I am on it!

I realize right now oaks already played, but it'll probably be just him with an electric and a pedal board. Maybe an acoustic number or two. Hope it was awesome! (im sure it was).
Just got back. Oh my lord. I honestly have not been moved by a performance like that in a long time. The intensity of that performance just reminds me of Jim live. Not the music but just the raw power. Joe Pug was solid but I was just so blown away by Tim I couldn't think straigt afterwards. And he was so amazingly nice just like you said Ghosts. Such a great happy spirit with such DARK songs! (I love it!) Those songs are such giants waiting to grow too. I hear these full band versions in my head and they are amazing!
West Coast dates coming up. Go see him.

I know right?
They had the Pope Killdragon vinyl and both CDs there last night. And a great shirt I wanted but didn't buy.
These are the songs I remember from the set. Not necessarily in order. There were a couple I didn't recognize.
Kill Dragon (opener)
Sister Evangeling
Daniel's Blues
Alex Kona (Afterwards my drunk ass tried to explain to him how he should add 3-4 minutes at the end screaming the final line. I think he understood what I was saying. :-X)
Sterling (I think this is the one that he mentioned was inspired by wide mouth bottles of Crazy Horse malt liquor.)

Once he gets signed I'm sure it will follow. I know he's been in talks with a bunch of labels (Saddle Creek and Nonesuch are two that I know of), so its inevitable. Don't know who he's going to end up with though.

Those would both be nice labels eh? I guess that would be for his next album or would they also market Killdragon at that point? That whole process is interesting to me.

thanks Dave! i think this writer's summary captures it perfectly:
"There is a heartbreaking reach that Showalter and Strand of Oaks gets to with all of his grief-stained and grounding lyrics - all of which read as long-harbored confessions and brilliant odes to the stumbles that have been made over the years."

Yeah, I might be in it, actually. ;D I'm not really sure, but they filmed me and one of the guys from juniper tar talking about Wilkes-Barre. To be honest, I kind of hope I'm not, I was a bit drunk, and I tend to repeat myself. That show was fantastic though, at this old man bar called Donahues, which is kind of known around WB as the bar you can get into underage. They only have genny on draught. It's a cool place though. John, one of the guys in High Frequency Media, actually got in touch with me through their Facebook page to see if I could hold a screening for it in Wilkes-Barre, but its not looking likely, unfortunately. But I'm pretty sure there is going to be a DVD release of it sometime down the road.
That's cool! The little two minute clip gives me the chills. What's the story with Juniper Tar? Any good?

Yeah, they're awesome. I was actually going to use thier first one as my pick for the album club, but switched. They have a full length and an ep and are working on a new lp now. They're on spotify if you have it, check em out!
It's looking like a January release for the new album.

He's based in Philly now, from Wilkes-Barre (via Indiana) though.
And yes, go to Johnny Brendas.
I'm going to see them on Friday in Wilkes-Barre. A pre tour show before they head out with Crooked Fingers. First time seeing the new band, I'm excited. Probably some new songs i haven't heard yet as well.

It was great! They played 2 new songs, dark shores and a song I've never heard before. Last to swim, Alex Kona, bonfire, sister evangeline....I forget. The band is trippy as shit, very ambient. Bad news is that Tim told me that the new album won't be out in January. The way he said it makes it sound like it might be a while.

Got to see Strand of Oaks Thurs at Maxwells and Friday at the Mercury Lounge (with Headhunter and bluesky). Both were really good shows, he has such a powerful voice. He was accompanied by a bass player and another guitarist/keyboardist. HH and I were talking about how on some parts of the album it sounds like the 80s keyboard sounds and it's really guitar.
Most of PK was played along with a new song "Dark Shore" with some drums added and that sounded great! I'm hoping the next album has more drums. We got to meet and talk to him and he's just the nicest guy, too. We told him we knew Ghosts and he seemed aprpeciative of all the support from the MMJ people.
Most of the time during the shows, you could hear a pin drop...and that's a feat at some of these venues.
PS as soon as I figure out how to upload my iphone videos onto youtube, I'll post..
Short set but really good music and enjoyable show.
Bought the vinyl at the concert and got to listen to it last night. Blows about the MP3 download I had previously heard. A really good late night hypnotic listen.
And Penny is right on when she says what a nice guy he is. Was so appreciative that we came out to his show and was so easily approachable. Really hope this band takes off and gets a bigger following.
So the new album is going to be titled Dark Shores (Tentatively), and should be finished in January. No word on a release date yet.

I have no clue yet on when it'll be released or what, if any label it'll be on. I do know that they were in the same studio as train while they were recording. So I mean, train are a hit band and all, so I'm sure they were at a good studio. And studio time is expensive, so it would be kind of hard to pay that out of pocket.... But yeah, no idea.

I can confirm that Maureen's is at least named for the ice cream stand by my house. Don't know what the song is about though. I mean, Sterling is named after an abandoned hotel in downtown WB, but is about getting smashed and hanging with JFK, so who knows. Tim certainly has a knack for making Wilkes-Barre seem like some mysterious, wonderous place.
From what I understand, this is going to be a very "big" sounding album. I'm already assuming it'll be my favorite album of the year, and I mean that as unbiased as I possibly can. I can't wait. I'm assuming a wilkes barre show is in the cards sometime soon. Reading that the lineup is a driving rock band sure does excite me.

I havn't been this giddy about an album coming out in a long time. I'm so glad I have you guys to share it with!
Oh, who will I call
Chevy's an ass and Gilda's got a cold
I always took the fall
It didn't matter then
Because John would always laugh
But he's
not
laughing
nowwwwwoooooo!wwwww
I knew the guy he used to buy from
I may have even introduced them
He was a skinny guy from Brooklyn
Arms always full of women
So I decided to take my shotgun
And take a long walk to Brooklyn
I'd make him put the outfit on
And strap him into the chair.......

Me too. And once I start to listen to The Smiths I tend to not stop for a while.
Why is there not a Smiths thread? I'm gonna change that.

When this came out, Damien Jurado tweeted that this was better than his. Not saying it is, but when the fucking dude who wrote the song says that, take note.
I don't even know the DJ version but I can't imagine it's better! ;D I'm going to make it a point to find the original now though.
Holy crap these HearYa live sessions are great. I'm all over the AA Bondy now. I need to go to bed.

So good to see all this stuff back!
Just listening to the new album today (thanks Penny), and liking a lot! I still need to see him live.
The show was awesome last night. Still just solo Timothy version of SoO but I don't know if I'd want it any other way! He creates so much awesome sound with his guitars and effects pedals. But his voice and the emotion he sings with is what grabs me. Even more intense than last time I saw him. And once again, we chatted after the show and he such a nice friendly down to earth guy. What a pleasure.
Setlist:
Last To Swim
Alex Kona
Maureen's
Satellite Moon
Spacestation
Sister Evangeline
Sleeping Pills  awesome.
Two Kids
Diamond Drill
Used Cars (Springsteen) Wow. Just wow. Found HYL session video version below.

I've seen him twice but never with a drummer so I found the following video particularly awesome. The potential power that could be unleashed in his songs is scary.

He is. Im not sure if the new dates are with phossy though.
Since SOO is opening for the Phosphorescent show Im going to wednesday, I had to give a listen last week. Only listened to Pope Killdragon and Dark Shores once each, but I liked what I heard. Really unique and interesting songwriting on PK, DS much tighter and much more going on. Reading thru this thread and listening to some live clips, I agree that while soft his vocals come off pretty powerful.
Gonna give Leave Ruin a listen now for the first time and I'll probably go back to one of the others afterwards, haha. Pretty freaking excited to see Phossy for the 1st time, but SOO opening makes it even more intriguing as obviously Im not very familiar with him/them but liking it.
Oh, and I just checked those new dates SOO is opening for Tallest Man on Earth. Mostly midwest (BH you got show!) and far midwest with a few southeast shows at the end. Another pretty solid band to open for though Id say!

Sweet! Thanks for the heads up. I didn't see that yet.
Go back to Pope Killdragon again before the show. That album is a masterpiece!
Totally. After listening to Leave Ruin I liked it (sort of reminded me of early Iron & Wine, not a knock to either guy), and listened to Dark Shores again last night (and again tonight), Pope Killdragon is hands down my favorite. It was the first I listened to last week, Spotify makes it look like his first album so thats why I went that route, and felt like I was hearing something special even during that first listen. Listened again tonight, so good. Not a song I dont like, but Kill Dragon > Sterling > Bonfire > Alex Kona is  :bath:
Nothing less than ecstatic for this show tomorrow night :cheesy:
Ahhh, it's so nice to see a band live RIGHT at that very moment when you are really getting into them. Enjoy Scotty.
Alex Kona was twelve feet tall
His mother got killed by bowling ball
As she skipped across the wooden lane
Two frames from a perfect game
Ten years past the bowling crash
Alex found a wooden shack
Showered in the post war moon
That's where Alex began to bloom
As the children left Sunday school
In gas masks and body suits
The reverend spoke of god's revenge
Would be coming down the mountain
And the ground shook
The mother's cried
The giant loomed in the yellow sky
With a look of dreaded fear
With a staff of pine and coat of deer
The mother's watched with worried ear's
Alex just laughed and stroked his beard
He said....
No you don't understand
NO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!
What its like
Growing up here
Yeah, I'd say Killdragon is the best. He's already at work on a new one, btw.
So good. I will post setlist tomorow. but Im guessing its usual. Thought both Phossy and SOO were great. but once I got home, Ive wanted to hear the Oaks
I also name dropped Dave Richards to Strands guy
Dark Shores
Satellite Moon
Maureen's
Daniels Blues
Spacestations
Two Kids
Sleeping Pills
Diamond Drill
Sterling
Bonfire
He rocked out more than I expected, him and a drummer I think really works, no need for a full band. I know I saw show clips where he has more of a band, not sure if he is sticking with just him and a drummer or not. I look forward to really get a grasp on his albums. When talking to him last night, I said Id like to say your new album is my favorite, but Pope Killdragon is so good . I also yelled out for Alex Kona twice, told him so when talking afterwards, and he said he can only remember so many lyrics and didnt want to play it (I think he said the same thing about recalling lyrics during the show but I might be imagining that). Like others here have said, he seemed like a genuinely nice and quiet dude.
Glad you're getting into it. He's sticking with the duo, at least for now. Have you listened to Darker Shores? Thats how all of Dark Shores was originally going to sound. I heard that version of the title track first, and then posted on here that the new one was going to be full of synthy awesomeness, then heard dark shores and there really wasnt any synth, lol. It was John Vanderslice who recommended the more straight forward sound, when he went to record it in San Fran. Anyway, glad you dig. I miss the frequent Wilkes-Barre shows, but Im happy for him.
This doesnt exist anymore, and the part that does, they're debating on what to do with, most likely tearing it down. It once was pretty glamorous, as was all of Wilkes-Barre. Oh, and Kennedy did stay there.

The darker shores versions were recorded before the album versions. however, the ep was just released last week.
Glad you enjoyed it Scotty! I just downloaded Darker Shores, so I'm looking forward to listening on the way home. I've been going through all my SOO albums, demos and "sessions" over the last few days. I want to see the Phossy/SOO tour so bad. I was seriously considering driving to Indiana tonight but I actually got rear ended BAD on my way home last night with Alex Kona cranked to 11. I guess I won't ever hear that song the same way again! Luckily I came out of it OK except I may have a broken pinky finger and my car is fucked. Oh well.
Love that picture Dave.
Not his greatest song, and albeit lyrically repetitive, but I cant get enough of this tune

Mirage year is ridiculous.

I got hooked by Leave Ruin, which I think is also just outstanding.
Thanks everyone for another great recommendation. This place is great! And just another great reason to check this Forum every day. I've "discovered" a bunch of bands due to the buzz of the Other Music section. As Murph said, better late than never, but I'm on board.
After one and half listens of Heal, I'm already liking it a lot and feel like this is the type of album that will grow on me more and more. I just skimmed Pope Killdragon as well and wasn't into it as much as the new one. Leave Ruin is on deck!
I'll be seeing Strand of Oaks in DC on Sept 14. Anyone else?

It's a shame he had to cancel a show for it. There were probably going to be more people at that show than there will be watching Seth Myers.

Yes, they'll perform "Shut In" on Seth Meyers, as Timothy stated last night during the Montreal show.

Saw these guys last night with Mr. and Mrs. GO4IT. It was a great. Good mix of loud rocking songs to start and end the show with a quiet, mellow middle stretch with just Tim and keyboardist. Tim kept saying how much fun his job of playing music is and had to stop himself from talking and thanking everyone for coming so that he wouldn't get too emotional. I'm sure Tim will be more emotional in the upcoming Philly home shows.

Oaks will be at Bonnaroo this year.
Has there really been no Strand of Oaks action on this forum since last Dec.
Anyway, maybe that's about to change with all the upcoming dates with the boys starting at the end of this month.
We saw Tim & co. last night with Ruckus and Ms Ruckus. Ms GO4IT and I didn't realize they were dancing almost in front of us up close until after the show, LOL. It was a short set, around an hour, but a nice fix for a Tues night and got home at a decent hour even after talking with Tim and Ruckus after the show.

I can't say thank you enough. To everyone that has supported my band in any way. I have had an amazing year and, as a small token of my thanks to everyone, I've made my first three albums available for free download today. Grab them if you don't have them or send them to a friend. I could not do what I do without each and every one of you. Happy Thanksgiving!

Really hoping to catch them live soon. He would make a great addition to OBH3 in 17.
Anyone doing the Philly solo shows? Jason Anderson is playing with Tim and opening the first night, he's great as well. I have tix for both.
So bummed, just got word that the Chicago show this Friday at the Metro has been cancelled due to unforseen circumstances. Hopefully Strand of Oaks will be able to make it up another date.

They are playing at the Boot and Saddle in Philly on Dec 2 and 3. Same place we'll see Carl playing in Nov (just checked and that show is sold out). Working on Ms GO4IT now for a return trip to Philly just 3 weeks later. Sounds reasonable to me
Well, Ms GO4IT hesitated and both shows sold out. Now they've added a third show on Sunday. Bummer.
New song is out.
New album comes out 2/17/17. I just snagged tickets to see him in Houston and thinking about doing Austin as well. Both at small fairly small venues.
Tour dates announced also. Twin Limb is opening. That's a great one-two punch!
Deluxe version of new Vinyl comes with CD, 7" bonus vinyl, poster, keychain and download for only $27. Pretty good deal.
New album available to DL if you preorder from site.

I was trying to figure out how to catch Strand of Oaks this spring, didn't see any Iowa dates, then caught that he's opening for Jason Isbell in Peoria on May 6. Seems Tim is opening for Isbell for 5 shows, two before Boston Calling in early May and three after BC in late May. I'd prefer a headlining show but this works, too.

well, since this seems to have spread like wildfire elsewhere, 4/5 Jacket in studio now with Tim at La La Land. Tour announcement imminent. Most of our boys will be hard at work late summer/early Fall similar to the RL tour back in '16. And don't worry, Jim will be announcing something soon too......
Wait, I was under the impression some of the guys were touring with Ray again for his new album? And that Bo is with Roger Waters? This would seem to conflict with that, unless there is some separation in the dates.

Agreed, Tom's mother told me at OBH4 that they were heading to a studio right after OBH4. I doubt Bo will be touring with them as the Roger Waters tour in Europe starts mid April and pretty much goes most of the year other than Sept. That would have left him a good 6 weeks to record with Timothy and the boys though. Great to hear no ones idle this year. Still trying to figure out how to go see Jim open for Robert Plant in Berkeley. My two favorite vocalists of all time.

We all know Tim is friends with the guys, but he's a genuine die hard fan as well.
Man those fills on the end cadence are CLASSIC Patrick. Cannot wait to hear this full album. Also, a couple statements from Tim on the album:
This record wasn't supposed to be here.
I had thought for a moment Strand of Oaks might be over until a text from my friend, Carl Broemel, changed all that. Unbeknownst to me, four members of My Morning Jacket and Kevin Ratterman booked studio time to record songs I didn't think I'd ever write. But they believed I could and pulled me back from the brink. At last, the songs came–and quickly morphed into everything I've ever worked toward as this band.
These ten songs are about existing and continuing on, a testament to the hope that even if we feel like we are disappearing, there is that glimmer of light. You may not come out the same person you started as, but that's okay. I'm glad this record is here now for whoever chooses to find it.
Welcome to Eraserland, where we all can start again. ~tim
Pre-order Eraserland here: bit.ly/ERASERLAND
"When I was writing these songs, every day I would walk on the beach and I was completely alone and overwhelmed by fear...but then I realized how there really aren't any rules for who you are, who you'll become, or who you think you need to be. Eraserland is just that. It's death to ego, and rebirth to anything or anyone you want to be."
In December 2017, Tim Showalter was uncertain about his next record and the shape it would eventually take. With no new songs written and lacking any clear vision, he was unprepared for the message he would receive from his friend Carl Broemel, the conversation that would follow, and the album that would become Eraserland. Leading off with standout track "Weird Ways" and his powerful declaration of "I don't feel it anymore," Eraserland traces Showalter's evolution from apprehension to creative awakening, carving out a new and compelling future for Strand of Oaks.
"This project seemed to just fall together naturally," said Broemel, guitarist for My Morning Jacket. "I felt drawn to Tim's positive energy and his albums...I threw it out there that I'd be happy to help in any way I could with the record." Broemel quickly reignited Showalter's interest in what would become Strand of Oaks' sixth full-length studio release, and within 24 hours, My Morning Jacket members Patrick Hallahan (drums), Bo Koster (keys), and Tom Blankenship (bass) were also on board.
Revived by the support of Broemel and his bandmates, Showalter felt the pressure to deliver songs worthy of musicians he had admired long before and after a 2015 Oaks/MMJ tour. So in February 2018, he spent two weeks alone in Wildwood, New Jersey writing and demoing all of the songs that would eventually comprise Eraserland. And in April, he went into the studio to record with Kevin Ratterman at La La Land Studios in Louisville, Kentucky, and with Broemel, Hallahan, Koster, and Blankenship as his band. Jason Isbell also contributed his Hendrix-esque guitar work to Eraserland, while singer/songwriter Emma Ruth Rundle provided gorgeous vocals. Every song was recorded live, with all musicians playing together in one room and working to bring Showalter's ideas to fruition. "I remember sitting next to Tim and Kevin listening to the final mixes with tears rolling down my cheeks," said Hallahan. "From start to finish, this one came from the heart."
Each song on Eraserland sustains an openness and sensitivity that is enthralling, bolstered by the exceptional musicians there to realize it and rekindle Showalter's passion for music-making. The album finds Showalter successfully channeling the full spectrum of sounds within the Strand of Oaks discography, from fast, synthy tracks like "Hyperspace Blues" to epic burner "Visions, the gorgeous ballad "Keys," and his devastating acoustic performance on "Wild and Willing." But Eraserland also has moments of pure, upbeat exuberance, most notably on "Ruby," a rollicking, understated anthem driven by buoyant piano and one of Showalter's most infectious melodies to date. Isbell's magnificent shredding is showcased on "Moon Landing," Eraserland's preeminent off-the-wall groove, while the album's title track finds Showalter resurrecting his long-dormant alter ego Pope Killdragon for a striking, synth-laden duet with Rundle.
But in many ways, "Forever Chords" is the definitive track on Showalter's magnum opus, and the manifestation of everything he hoped to achieve on this record and for Strand of Oaks as a whole. "When I finished writing 'Forever Chords,' I felt like this is either the last song I ever need to write, or the rebirth of Strand of Oaks." Poignant and heart-rending, "Forever Chords" gradually builds toward an emotional release rooted in our own universal fears about mortality, personal legacy, and music as a saving force.
But it's that first Eraserland line, "I don't feel it anymore," that sets a stunning precedent for the most affecting and fully-formed album Strand of Oaks has ever released. Because despite whatever doubts or reservations Showalter had going into the process, he crafted a series of songs so perfectly matched to the musicians supporting it, and so emboldened by his own doubts and insecurities, that the result is glittering, powerful, and impassioned, a moving rock and roll saga that feels substantial and deeply satisfying, vulnerable and self-assured.

Very curious about that as well. I just checked Roger Waters' webpage and it says his tour is over (156 shows in 35 countries!), so Bo should be free. I'm liking how this is looking. Although I'm not stoked about a Monday night show in downtown LA, it's gonna make that a looonnnnggg week.

Carl's tour with Tyler Ramsey ends by March and gives them plenty of rehearsal time before the April tour kickoff. The way he describes how the band helped him with this album it would seem odd that they not back him. As far as any potential Jacket stuff, Jim has shows booked through first week of July and then they have the August shows. So it all seems to fit.

Guessing they are going to be touring as his band..
I'm wondering if they're going to be his backing band as well.
Carls' pedal steel in Weird Ways definitely made me miss MMJ
Great news, the boys always helping their friends <3

that's a bummer. Thinking about it with this new information, I guess they would have announced them as backing on this tour when they released the dates. Regardless, I love the track and hope the rest is as good.

Agree it's definitely a bummer. But I'm still getting tickets to the Los Angeles show today.
And I still think Strand Of Oaks would be perfect for the next One Big Holiday.
Got my tickets for MHOW!

That is a bummer, but thanks for the news. I am digging the new song.
Tim has some great things to say about working with Tom. Neat to hear other artists talk about working with the guys and how talented they are

Tim posted a bunch more stuff about how great each of the MMJ guys are. I'm digging the first single, Weird Ways.
Like the first two songs, hope this album is a nice substitute for a real MMJ album....
From Tim's Twitta:
I've tried ever since Strand of Oaks started to properly write or express my love for my wife and best friend Sue. We've grown up together and without a doubt you would have never heard of me if it wasn't for Sue. She worked two jobs just to make sure I could get plane tickets to some tour I would inevitably lose money on and for six records she was the first to ever hear any song I've ever written. In a way everything that I've written is a love song for her. I was a lonely and aimless kid when we first met and it was her unconditional support that gave me the courage to pursue this dream. But Keys is a song about the future and realizing with more years the aspects of life that truly matter and what seems so important in the moment just slips into dust. If you listen to the second chorus you will hear the best and only take we could find where both me and my producer Kevin could get through without tears. "I'll buy us a trailer down in the Keys," may be the most honest and true realization I've ever expressed to my love.
I truly hope anyone listening is loved by someone like I have.

based on the 3 songs so far, I think this has the potential to be the best album the 4 Jacket guys have played on since Z.
it was confirmed that MMJ would not be backing him on this tour right?
Album is decent, not great. Too long for my taste, 17 minute instrumental track to close it out.

Wow. That is high praise. I can't imagine it being better than EU, Circuital, or The Waterfall. I'll check out the newest single soon.

ok, throwing EU in there is a stretch. The last 2 albums have some great songs but I don't rate them that highly as albums tbh

So I'm totally floored by the track 'Keys'. Tim & the boys took the bitterness (and guitar line) from 'via Chicago', meshed it through a Mazzy Star filter and turned it into such a beautiful tribute to Tim's wife. I've been listening to this one on repeat for a couple of days now. So good.
Really looking forward to hearing the whole album on Friday.

After a few listens, I'm really digging the three songs that are out a lot. This has great potential to be on the high quality level of a Carl or Jim solo work, but still think it would be hard to be up there with The Waterfall. I'm looking forward to hearing the whole album soon.

VIA CHICAGO! That's the song I couldn't quite put my finger on when I heard it but you're absolutely right.
Moon Landing, y'all. The jam of the album.
Listened on the drive to work this morning. LOVED IT. got several goosebumps throughout. Fan-f'ing-tastic album. can't wait to see him live.
I'm digging this album too. I saw them open for MMJ at Brooklyn Bowl in 2015 and they didn't make an impression on me. But this album has me pumped to see them live in May. Anyone know if MMJ will be the backing band on tour?

JDUB, no the boys are not backing Tim on the tour sadly.
I'm so annoyed, Bandcamp didn't have the album ready for download this morning. Now I have to wait until I get home to listen to it!! UGH!!!!
Okay, I'll stop pouting now.
It's a good album, at first listen I think I like Hard Love more though.. but I did love Forever Chords, that song is incredible.
Also whoever said this is MMJ's finest work musically since Z is well... I'm hoping that was just a comment due to sheer excitement of having some new music from the boys. This thing doesn't even tickle any MMJ album musically. If anything it reminds me a lot of a War on Drugs album.
I will say it is better than uniform distortion.

that was me tho I did walk it back on EU. And I stand by it over Circuital and The Waterfall. I think Circuital is all over the place though it has some truly great tracks. The Waterfall, sonically, sounds fantastic but I am not sure of the song writing on half the tracks. Seriously, how many times have you thought to yourself, I need to put on Thin Line, Get The Point or Like a River? Also, both recent War on Drugs albums are much better than the last 2 Jacket albums.

I think we'll just have to disagree, I loved Circuital and Waterfall but agree that Thin Line is horrendous and Like a River is basic.. Get The point is up there with Bermuda highway for Jim acoustic songs (to me) so we strongly disagree there.
I mean at the same time we can nitpick this SOA's album, Wilde and Willing is a basic acoustic song (similar to get the point), Cruel Fisherman is noise.. will you honestly ever listen to that track again? And the rest just kind of blends together.. but with that said, that's usually how I feel after listening to a WOD album.
It's a good album, it'll definitely make my rotation but at no point was I truly ever blown away, if anything I think the boys were held back. Even on Forever Chords, the end of that song had a chance to have an epic David Gilmour/floydesque ending and the solo was completely refrained.
Again, this is after the first listen, I might sing a different tune after a few more but after the first I just don't think it competes with any MMJ album musically, and this is coming from a pretty big Strand of Oaks fan and obviously a massive MMJ fan.
agree to disagree is totally cool. I will say that Cruel Fisherman is not considered an album track but a "cleanser" after the album is over (per Tim). And I'm not saying Eraserland is without flaws or a perfect album (Wild and Willing is sparse, maybe Final Fires apes The Cure) but, to me, is a more complete album than those 2.

Have to agree with all of this from parkervb, but those WOD albums are a pretty high mark for comparison. PS - The Strand album is quite fantastic.

The title track is amazing...and there is a song where he plays solo acoustic on the guitar Jim used on the early jacket albums. A great album for Jacket fans.
Just a heads up for those looking to buy it as a download - Amazon has it for $9.49 with the bonus track Cruel Fisherman (17 minutes long!), Bandcamp has it for $10 and it doesn't have the bonus track.
His tour buddy (and recent Carl tour buddy) Tyler Ramsey just put out a stellar new record, For the Morning. Really wish he was hitting Nashville on this tour, the Atlanta show is 21+ and unavailable to me and BHam is too far for a Sunday night to be back for class so I've gotta skip out on this tour for now :(
I thought the album was pretty good, but it got me thinking of new MMJ and how nice it would be if it were jammier like some of these songs were.

That's it??? Seems a little light for a headlining tour
Who's in the touring band?
I saw Strand of Oaks last night in DC. As Murph said, it is "a little light." They had to cut Goshen because the venue had to get everyone out for a DJ set afterwards. I thought Moonlanding and Hyperspace Blues were the highlights. Tim seemed happy and talked to the crowd a bit. It was more crowded than I expected, which was great. It was easy to walk around the venue, and the sound noticably improved or worsened depending on where you stood, which was strange. I'm definitely glad I went. I've seen Strand a handful of times, and this was probably my favorite thanks to the new tunes.
based on the shorter set, I don't think I can justify a 3+ hour drive to see him tonight in Durham.

I'd have to agree. The ratio of driving to music doesn't work. And he has some dates listed for the fall so you could possibly catch Strand later in the year.
LOVED the DC show! Only wish it had been longer! Here is the one video I took of the last song.

I'd say it's a definite no on the members of MMJ backing him up at the Zanzabar show in Louisville on 9/11/2019 (I'm going), but I'd bet a couple of them show up to be in the audience (Patrick ALWAYS shows up at shows in Louisville). When I saw Carl and Tyler Ramsey at the final show of their most recent tour in Franklin, Tenn. (about 20 mins. south of Nashville) back on 7/27/2019, I made a point of it to ask Carl about the possibility of this happening. I got there super early and spoke to him as they were setting up the merchandise table (got both to sign my show poster). Carl said there were no plans for that ... at the time. Also, as people started filling up the 146 seat Mockingbird Theater, I spotted Tom just a few rows from the top as he and a friend sat down (I was on the top row next to the soundboard). I took the opportunity to thank him in person for the Get Well card he sent me with a cool hand-drawn cartoon when I was recovering from my terrible car wreck back in Nov./Dec. of 2017. I also asked about the possibility of them showing up to be part of the show (prefacing the discussion with the information Carl had given me earlier in the evening). Tom said no plans for that but also mentioned the possibility of it happening in the future (can't remember his exact wording though). Sorry for the bad news, but I did end my conversation with Tom with the comment/request that they should definitely play a show up in Louisville soon and very soon. Hopefully the Hometown Folk pressure gets to them. Good Luck to all us local (Kentucky and surrounding states) folks!

Strand of Oaks shows are always fantastic, and always too short. I've seen him a few times and it's never gone longer than about 90 minutes, start to finish. I've heard the same from everybody I know who's seen him too -- it's hard to make that complaint about such a great show, but I wish he'd draw it out a bit sometimes!

That really was my only complaint about the show. I wish I'd caught previous incarnations of the band, but I've made up by going to Youtube and checking out some of their older shows. A great way to hear the songs from their earlier albums live!
I went to my first Strand Of Oaks show last night, September 11, 2019, at Zanzabar in Louisville, Kentucky. It was really special. I was on the front row/rail with lots of MMJ Family and even a few Forum members. I stepped back for the last song, so I could get a good audio/video recording. I think it turned out pretty good.

He was really hyping these "special guests" on social media. I thought there was no chance that the MMJ guys didn't show up. Did anyone?

Only Lacey Guthrie from Twin Limb actually performed. She sang on several songs that she sang on Eraserland. I was on the rail for most of the show so didn't see all who were there, but I did see and spoke with Aaron Hallahan (Patrick's brother) after the show. Craig Pfunder from VHS or Beta and a band member along with Patrick in Jake Shears' band was there too (Jake Shears is performing at Zanzabar tonight, so Patrick and Craig will probably be in the band tonight - wish I was going but have too much to do and another show up in Louisville tomorrow night - Drive-By Truckers). I'm sure there were plenty of people there who were hoping MMJ members would perform, but I knew they probably wouldn't be after having spoken with Carl and Tom at the Carl and Tyler Ramsey show in Franklin, Tenn. back on July 27th. They both told me there were no plans to be there or to perform. However, Tom said they might perform with him at a later date maybe next year.
Just a heads up for anyone close to Austin. Tim is doing a November residency at the Continental Club. It will be every Wednesday. There will be no presales and tickets will be limited to 70 people. Wish I could make one of these shows.

Correction...... it will be every Saturday in November
was listening to the latest episode of the Joe Pug podcast and he interviewed Tim. He mentioned he was recording his new record in LA with Kevin Ratterman over the next few weeks. Pretty cool!

Good to hear!! For something to listen to in the meantime, here are some Strand Of Oaks bootlegs https://livebootlegconcert.blogspot.com/search/label/Strand%20of%20Oaks
Bo was shown playing keys in the studio on Tim's IG so assuming he will be on the record?
Tim's new album is up on ITunes and the new single "Galacticana" is fantastic. Can't wait to hear the rest and I am looking forward to seeing him at Sea Hear Now this year!
I asked him on Instagram if any of the MMJ guys are on the new record. He said Carl is playing guitar and Bo is playing keys on that first single! It's a great song too..

That's awesome, Carl's the best! I bet Tim would say Carl saved his career by talking him into getting back at writing then the boys helping him with the music on Eraserland.
really like this song. Feels like it would have fit right in on Eraserland as well. Looking fwd to hearing Carl and James Iha on the same track.
Just released his tour schedule for the US!

Listened to it on the way to work this morning and I think it may be his best yet.

Really liked the first listen but just had it on a little quiet while working, I loved Eraserland so much, but i did feel like this one was a little more upbeat so i think ill enjoy it more after a few more spins
I really enjoyed my first listen through. Hearing it, the sound, the layering, it reminded me of The Cure with their Disintegration & Wish albums, that period. Great stuff here, can't wait to hear it on the beach. Still bummed he had to cancel the tour though. Was going to two shows.
