Hey. Not familiar with Wilco but hear them mentioned a ton on this here forum, so...

Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche held a percussion workshop down the street at Dartmouth last Sunday. He and guitarist Nels Cline have stopped into classrooms all week, interacting with students.

Tonight, they perform with visual artist Norton Wisdom in a show called Sonic/Vision, billed as an evening of music, art, animation, and improvisation.

I think it was on their last DVD (Ashes of American Flags) they showed how hard Glenn plays every night, having to ice his hands and arms and often making himself bleed.
He's a sweaty mess after every show. He definitely gives it his all up there. Really jonesin for some west coast Wilco shows, it's been 2 years.

yeah, that was pretty awesome. it was funny to see a couple of the other band members muching on mexican and having a laugh at how glenn needed to stay back and "practice." i dunno. if i were in that band, i'd be a little paranoid about staying on my game.

I hope they're coming up by my neck of the woods soon, havent seen them since 2008.
we usually try and see at least a couple of shows per year. i was really anxious for the tour announcements for this year. so far nothig close to home, i guess i will have to wait till fall. outside of the jacket, they are my favorite contemporary band.
I got tickets to see them in a couple of weeks in Tulsa. I've missed seeing them a handful of times over the last few years. This show is pretty high on my bucket list of band I need to see live.
ms. yvon and I saw a solo Jeff Tweedy show last Friday. If you ever get a chance to see Jeff solo, DO IT. He tends to interact a little more with the audience and is hilariously cantankerous.
He played at least one new songs (the one with the opioids lyric described in the SPIN article linked above) and the solo arrangements of the songs are just spare and lovely. Le sigh.
I am due for a full-on Wilco show, though. Seems they'll be playing ACL fest in the fall.

Wilco are by far one of the best working bands out there. One of the best live acts I've ever seen been seeing them for years. Tweedy is a stage man like no other, great solo too, as he is a master story teller.

No, I 've seen them before but this was my first one since the summer of 2009.
Along with MMJ and DBT, Wilco is one of my absolute favorite bands.

I've gotten into The Whole Love, some songs on there are catchy as hell. For all you Wilco fans, are there any albums out there that are particularly more upbeat than others? I love mellow music, but I feel like a lot of Wilco songs bleed together, and I know if I found some more upbeat songs they would in turn lead me to love the rest...

I'd say Summerteeth has more upbeat songs than any of the other Wilco albums (Can't Stand It, I'm Always in Love, Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway, ELT, Summerteeth).
Being There has a good bunch, too. (Monday, Outtasite Outta Mind, I Got You, Dreamer in my Dreams).
AM and Being there are pretty straight ahead alt country. Summerteeth most likely their most upbeat.
BUT, I would recommend as others have, Kicking Television and Ashes of American Flags, the movie.
Even better, download the entire 2008 Chicago residency. There may be better places to get it but here's one.

Yeah, I agree, there really is not one Wilco album that is more rocking than the others, its more a song by song thing from each album.
Good list. I'd add You Never Know from Wilco The Album, too. Its got that great pounding piano riff.
And do check out the live DVD Ashes of American Flags, you might be surprised how hard some of the songs rock when played live.
Great show at Merriweather last night. The new stuff sounds fantastic, what a great new record! Way too many people used One Sunday Morning as a mini intermission.
The setlist felt pretty static all in all, nothing too rare except for Box Full of Letters. I'd love to see them branch out a bit in terms of the things they pick from Summerteeth, and from Sky Blue Sky (though Impossible Germany is welcome anyday).
It was a huge treat for me to hear Monday again. Even though it's pretty commonly played, I somehow hadn't gotten to see it until last night since 1996.
Sat in the pouring rain in Central Park on Friday and still loved every minute of it. Wilco really is amazing. I dont know if there is any other guitarist in the world right now who I'd rather watch play than Nels Cline, he's a maniac.
Headhunter, too bad we couldnt meet up, i got there a little late because i got turned all around once i got in the park and it took me a while to get in.

I've been listening to nothing but a spottily playlist based off the recommendations of 1-eyed, picked up Ashes of American Flags (will probably watch it this weekend, and The Whole Love cd has stayed in my car stereo exclusively for awhile. Im enjoying this bad a lot. I knew there was a contemporary band out there other than Jacket that I could be obsessed with :)\
You and I is a fantastic song. I'm a sucker for songs with both male and female vocalists.

Anyways here's a real cool section of a Tweedy article from salon.com that discusses the slow creation of Art of Almost.
"The Whole Love" opens with a classic Wilco epic, the seven-minute "Art of Almost," which careens through a half-dozen different pieces and styles, along the lines of "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" or "Bull Black Nova" from earlier albums. Would you walk through how a song that tricky comes together in the studio, what the process is like as you build the soundscape?
"Art of Almost" started as a completely different song, and through a hodgepodge of approaches and accidents, we ended up with this collage that we spent months and months and months refocusing our eyes on, adding parts and taking parts away. A few things happened pretty early on -- like the drumbeat and the bass line, the pulse of the song -- and that became the core. After that, we could all envision where it could head and where it was going -- it was just patiently, collectively, coming in weeks apart and saying, "We're going to nail this outro now" or "Let's make sure the sound cloud that the vocal emerges from is rich enough" or "The third verse sounds much too similar to the first verse. Let's make it a totally different texture." It's very rewarding to work that way and make a real studio-sculpture-type collaboration.

Hey Johnny. I'm no Wilco junky myself but they are extraordinarily tight live. As with the Jacket, I don't feel their studio work does them justice though I think most would disagree. GIB and Summerteeth are my favorites

I TOTALLY agree that Wilco's studio work doesn't do them justice, you really have to see them live to get how frickin' tight they are, just like MMJ. Both these bands are insanely in synchronization and their rhythm sections both kill. When they hit a groove in unison and ride it hard, its like freight train powerful. Blows my mind. Its no suprise to me that there is so much overlap in Wilco fandom and MMJ fandom. They are, in my mind, the two best live rock bands in existence.

I took my own advice and am listening right now on Spotify. It is perfect this Friday afternoon. You probably did miss something special but they tour relentlessly. Plenty of more opportunities - plus you'll be more familar with them. Shit, you'll probably have ten shows under your belt by this time next year! ;D

Just saw Wilco for the first (and second) time during their two night stand at the Ryman. Absolutely blown away. This year marks the first times I've seen MMJ and Wilco. Really makes me wonder what I've been doing with my life up until now.

The mermaid Ave albums are great. Be sure to check out "Remember the Mountain Bed"... one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I love the Natalie Merchant song "Birds and Ships" on the first Mermaid album as well. Last year, Wilco were closing many of their shows with "Hoodoo Voodoo" from the Mermaid albums, which included some great guitar dueling at the end.
I got extremely lucky over the weekend and scored two tickets to their show at the Metro in Chicago. Very small venue for them. They first sold out the Civic Opera House, and then added shows, selling out one at a time, at the Riviera, The Vic and The Metro. Each venue is subsequently smaller. Rumor has it they may add one more at an even smaller club. To avoid scalpers, they have been placing a two ticket limit and will call only for pickup. The person who ordered has to have ID and the credit card they used to get the tickets, and all members of the party have to enter at the same time, no exceptions.

That's awesome. I was a moderate fan and slept on Nashville, Indi, and Chicago to save for MMJ NYC. Really wish I would've gone to 2 nights at the Ryman in Nashville. They're too damn good. The live videos really sold, they showed me how these dudes can rock live, even if the song seems mellow.

This Incredible Shrinking Tour of Chicago could almost come compare in epic-ness to T5 for me.. (if I could go)
And btw Wilco is doing a great job at stopping scalping :thumbsup: It was almost impossible for people to find a way to resell at the Boston show unless you wanted to sit next to the person you just scalped to ;D. While I'm sure will-call only sucks for those few that can't make it the rest of us benefit - at least there are no $500 tickets on stubhub!

I think they've gotten a little happier over the years. Jeff did an interview with CBS Sunday Morning a few years ago that was interesting, and he seems better now that he's managed his addictions. I've read a few interviews where he's shunned the idea that he's a tortured artist. That really is a great film though, at such a pivotal time in the band.

ha...watched it again last night, too..you should read the Koch book
lots and more of the same info..plus it talks about how physically sick Jeff was during that time period (for example the constant vomiting)...+ tension with Jay Bennett + record company issues...it was tumultuous which makes for one of the greatest rocumentaries ever..
I completely agree with Penny. One of the all time great rockumentaries.
And yes, any big Wilco fan should also read the book. Highly recommended!
I get why people like the documentry on making Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but its pretty joyless and grey and depressing to me. That's not at all the Wilco I love, they are so much better now that they got past all that bullshit. Tweedy had migraines and was addicted to pain meds to try to control them, but it wasn't like he was drinking himself to death or addicted to heroin or something else more obviously self-destructive.
I guess you could go down the whole philosphical rabbit-hole of does an unhappy artist make better art than one who is content and happy question with Tweedy. I do think there is some truth to that, but in the case of Wilco, I think their live show is far better now that it was in 2003, even if their studio work may be more pleasant than challenging these days.
I vastly prefer to watch the Ashes of American Flags dvd. There is some good documentary stuff in that film, too, although its much more about live music than I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is. E wind, if you haven't seen Ashes, watch it to balance out the picture on Wilco. I don't think they are that sad as the other film portrays them, certainly they aren't any more.
Ashes kicks ass. One of the best straight concert films I own. Beautifully shot too. Can't second that recommendation enough.
Another Wilco DVD I'd endorse tracking down would be the Sky Blue Sky bonus DVD "Shake It Off". The DVD is comprised of interview clips and performances from the loft during the recording of SBS. Some of the performances on this DVD trump the album performances, in my opinion. Not that they are incredibly different, but actually seeing the music makes all the difference. The version of "Impossible Germany" on this DVD will cause permanent jaw dislocation. The sound is great too!
The music was better to me when Jay Bennett was there and the arrival of Jim O'Rourke to Jeff Tweedy's life represents a turning point. I love all their albums but nothing will ever beat Summerteeth, BT and YHF. But I understand it was necessary for the band to change and move on. So I guess from all that turmoil came one of my favorite albums of all time, another reason why I see this as a monumental film.

I'm trying to convince my lady that Wilco will be her second favorite modern band, and she's trying to convince me the same of Radiohead. What is your favorite song for a mix - and why? Im still in my discovery phase myself, and just keep saying "Yankee hotel foxtrot is perfect". I want to make a mix, but don't feel I'm entitled to do so because I don't even own Wilco (the album) or Sky Blue Sky. I find if there is a reason why it's awesome, a small musical detail or lyric, it's easier to jump into. For example, if I was to tell someone to listen to jacket I could say "listen to dondante - because when the "you had me worried" part kicks in, it's amazing.
Also, if you like Radiohead, head to that thread for the same post :)
Unfortunately, I don't think there are many (any?) standout moments like that in W(TA). On SBS, the guitar work on Impossible Germany is pretty outstanding.
If you're looking for a good mix, try to find the audio from their "Ashes of American Flags" DVD... and add a couple tracks (Art of Almost and the title track) from their latest album.
-Since you mentioned Dondante, "At Least That's What You Said" has a similar feel, very slow to start and then a massive Neil Young style jam at the end. It is amazing in concert.
-The strings and smooth vibe of Jesus, Etc. sound amazing on a good set of speakers. This one is much better in studio.
-The numerous Nels Cline guitar freakouts throughout "Handshake Drugs" (any live version) and then the wall of sound guitar to close out the song. Must be listened to at maximum volume.
-The string buzz on "Someone Else's Song".
-On "Say You Miss Me" toward the end when he sings "I've been messed up...since the break-up...what I need you to say, is everything's okay".
-Live version of "Misunderstood" when Jeff sings "I'd like to thank you all for nothing..nothing..nothing..." and screams nothing about twenty times.
Those are just a handful off the top of my head. However, without knowing your lady's tastes in general, I don't know which Wilco characteristic to accentuate the most.
Since you mentioned Handshake Drugs... the bass through that entire song is just absolutely incredible.
Yes, reminds me of "Stuck in the Middle with You" by Stealer's Wheel.

I probably sound like a broken record, but again I think Ashes of American Flags is the best officially released Wilco, better than all of their studio albums. To me, it presents Wilco at their strongest.
There is the pounding three-chord rock of Monday that is as good as the Stones at their very best, IMO and the lilting and melodic beauty of You Are My Face (that also gets loud for a few moments), the slightly tongue-in-cheek country ballad Its Just That Simple, and there there are live show warhorses like A Shot In the Arm, War On War, I'm The Man Who Loves You and Handshake Drugs for which it'd be hard to find better performances of. Impossible Germany on there is fantastic, too. Its got the noisy weirdness in via Chicago, too. I'd use Ashes for most of the compilation. Kingpin is a snaky blues riff, but live its got the singalong part that isn't that great when I'm not watching the DVD, but the crescendo is huge and vastly satisfying. The studio version is weak, IMO.
I'd add in some stuff that was already mentioned like the angsty art/noise rock of At Least That's What You Said, Misunderstood, Poor Places and I'm Trying To Break Your Heart from the live Kicking Television.
Yeah, without knowing what she likes, its hard to make specific recs. She may dig the bittersweet melodic pop of She's A Jar from Summerteeth and Say You Miss Me from Being There or the folk rock of What Light from Sky Blue Sky or the ballad Reservations from YHF. Maybe the noise rock would turn her off or maybe she would love that, I dunno. Maybe she'd dig the country folky stuff like Forget The Flowers and Airline To Heaven? Wilco is pretty diverse stylistically. Lots of directions you could go in.

How about the part in the song Ashes Of American Flags from the DVD of the same name when Tweedy sings "I wonder why we listen to poets when nobody gives a fuck?" I love a good, well-placed f-bomb in a good song! Nels Cline's solo on this version is, well, fucking incredible! ;D

Was fortunate enough to be a the Metro show. Nels ripped it up on the Ashes solo. Unfortnately, I wasn't in the best spot sound-wise, but it was great to hear some of the rarities that I'm sure I'll never hear live again. What an amazing band of individuals and as a collective.
Did the Riv show. Not one of my favorite performances, despite a nice reworking of "Reservations". Also, always nice to get "Bull Black Nova" and "Spiders (Kidsmoke) in the same setlist.
Wish I'd been paying attention enough to get tickets for the Lincoln Hall show, but Wilco has kind of fallen off my radar of late. Still, they put on a good show and continue to fire on all cylinders.
I've got three shows in January (Tempe, San Diego, and LA Theatre) and I'm hoping some of the nuggets and vibes of this impressive Chicago run will spill over into next month! Now those are the kinds of setlists I'd like to see from Wilco on a more regular basis!

Yeah, I think I prefer the Vic setlist to the Riv setlist. And Lincoln Hall. Damn. Still wondering why I didn't even consider any of the Chicago shows. I guess 7x in 8 months is probably enough, huh? :P

Saw Wilco for the first time ever last night. I could not help but keep comparing the show to MMJ. Strong similarities in many ways, the most surprising one was Tweedy now looks like Jim James brother. He looks a little heavier, wore a black button down shirt reminiscent of Jim, and had long hair and a beard. Some of his physical movements were similar. Is this a chicken or the egg scenerio? Both bands are off the charts incredible live, but I have to say My Morning Jacket is just more melodic. I would see Wilco again, but not with the adrenaline anticipation of an MMJ show. White Denim kicks ass.
I have only been on the Wilco bandwagon for the past 6 months or so. Years ago, people said I should listen to their music, but pretty much wasn't feeling it.
About 6 months ago, I watched Ashes of an American Flag and from that song on forth I was hooked. It then hit me why I liked them now than before, and probably why I am not a huge fan of TTF and AD or YHF albums. Both MMJ and Wilco needed outside players to bring their music to another level.
It's very strange that both MMJ and Wilco, made major changes to their lineups in 2004. Carl and Bo brought so much to the table, as did Nels and Pat. Listening to old songs done with the current lineups are revelations. I feel that is one of the reason Okonosos and the Palms sessions were made, to show how the old material just needed another go around and every remade song is infinitely better than the original. The TTF show at T5 was imho the most remarkable of their shows that week, every song was fulfilled and great.
As to Wilco, I feel the same way. Any version with the new lineup is much fuller and realized. Ashes of an American Flag is incredible and almost a different song.
MMJ is still number 1 but Wilco is closing fast.
Jeff Tweedy is playing two solo benefit shows here next month. Highly recommended if you can work it out. The setlist is chosen by the first 30 or so folks waiting in line outside the venue - so as you can imagine, all kinds of rarities and b-sides as the Wilco nerds love to play "stump Jeff". ;D

Hmm... the 30th is out because I've got tickets to the Delta Spirit show in Philly that night. The 31st is doable, and I've got a free round trip ticket for Southwest to use. $50 for a show like that isn't too bad at all.

The name really suited, he used to do this little arch of his back and get all tense before leaping at whatever he was gonna attack. I will definitely be at Chicagoland. The love Wilco has given their hometown lately is just amazing. I can't wait for MMJ's Increasingly Smaller Venue tour of their hometown. Yum Center -> The Palace -> The Brown -> Headliners -> My backyard. Topped off with a Waterfront show complete with Wax Fang, Cabin, and fireworks.
Back to wilco though. Chicagoland will be my first proper Wilco show.

Wilco To Headline July 8 Concert at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark
The Kane County Cougars organization and Fifth Third Bank Ballpark will host Wilco for a Sunday evening concert on July 8. The all-Chicago lineup will also feature Andrew Bird and eight-piece soul outfit, The Congregation. The summer evening of Chicago's finest homegrown talent is part of WXRT's 40 Years of XRT celebration and culminates with a spectacular fireworks display.
"We had such a great time at our shows in December, but not everyone was able to get tickets," said Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. "So this time, we've made sure that there will be plenty of room for everyone, so anyone who wants to can come out and have a great time with us."
Tickets are $50 and go on sale Saturday, April 7 at 10 a.m. CDT. Admission is free for all children ages 4 and under. Tickets will be available online at eTix.com and at the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark ticket office. Tickets can also be purchased at The Vic Theatre box office with no service charge (3145 North Sheffield in Chicago).
All tickets are General Admission, as attendees can watch the concert from field level or sit in stadium seating. Parking lots open at 4 p.m. and doors open at 5 p.m. with the concert beginning at 5:30 p.m. Parking is $5, with a limited number of preferred $10 spots available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no Cougars game on the day of the concert.

It's one of the nicer minor league stadiums. The Stadium is in Geneva ( about an hour west of Chicago ) in the Fox Valley area. I've pretty much lived in the Fox Valley area my entire life. I'm not sure I can make the show yet though. I'd like to buy you a beer though before the show if I can't make it.
I've never been to Red Rocks, can somebody fill me in on the situation with the front and back GA with reserved seats in the middle? Do you have to be in line all day to get into the front GA section? Do they limit how many people can fit in that section or do they let it get really packed? My preference would be to stand near the soundboard with a bit of room around, not packed in like sardines. Better to get reserved or try for front GA?

Never been and I hate to say it but I might be ditching Forecastle for this trip....have always wanted to go and Wilco is my favorite band...couldn't pass it up.
From what I'm told it is first come first serve for GA...just like anything else. So yeah if you want to get up front you stand in line and wait.
as far as I know it is all GA....I don't think there are actual seats anywhere.

I was there for Soundgargen last summer and it was a similar setup (GA in front and back, reserved in the middle). I don't know if it is possible to say how early you would need to get there for Wilco based on my experience at Soundgarden. I got there at maybe 4 in the afternoon and got a place by the soundboard (roughly row 18) with no problem.
If you wanted to be way up front, you might need to get there fairly early and be willing to be aggressive about holding your ground in line. Tons of people were cutting in line at the Soundgarden show, which I'm guessing might not happen so much at Wilco. Also, Soundgarden had a thing where their fanclub got let in first, so that might have skewed the dynamics a bit more.

There are no actual "seats", just rows of tiers like bleachers. There are row numbers and seat numbers, and parts or sometimes all of it is reserved seating.
What it sounds like they are doing for Wilco, similar to what they did for MMJ las summer, is the front 20 to 25 rows are GA, the middle 20-30 are reserved seats, then the back is more GA.

SBS is a wild card; some say it's their weakest effort. I totally disagree with those sentiments, I love SBS. It is definitely their more relaxed effort and you may even catch some Grateful Dead experimental infulence in it. For a completists sake definitely check out AM, it's great but not a perfect album by any means. The only album IMHO that's skippable is Wilco.the Album. 2011's the Whole Love is a great fun album too.

I have heard a bit from the Whole Love and I really liked what I heard, I'm sure it could be a Christmas present this year.
As far as live shows go, I really want to catch them when they come close to me. Their live shows remind me of MMJ to a certain extent. They just keep playing and playing and I love that!
YHF is one of the greatest albums ever, but to me A Ghost is Born is easily their second best.
I like Sky Blue Sky a lot, way underrated in my opinion. It would be a good just because it has Impossible Germany, even if it didn't have anything else, but it does.
Being There is good too, more mellow alt-country-ish.

From there I went in order, like wolof said, (Being There, A.M., Being There, Summerteeth, Sky Blue Sky). All records are amazing in their own right, and have different sounds (similar to another band we all know and love around here). I totally skipped Wilco (the Album) because I've never heard anything positive about it. I still haven't listened to it.
But now, about a year after really, really diving in, I am really stuck on listening to recordings of Jeff Tweedy Solo shows, and they are tied with Pearl Jam as my second favorite band of all time. Jeff Tweedy is probably the only person that I feel the same about that I feel about Jim. Just an all around amazingly talented and interesting person. It's unreal how much of his emotion bleeds out through his music. Sometimes listening to Wilco can be as much of an emotional event as breaking up with a significant other.
And that's my positive rant of the day. If you couldn't tell I'm on a really bizarre Wilco kick right now.

I agree with everything you said, being a fairly new fan myself. I tried for years and years and did not get it at all, and it's only recently clicked for me. Now they're in top five territory for me. And I am sure I will just continue to get sucked in as I get more into them.
When certain Wilco songs come on I just feel like spontaneously crying, they're just that good/emotional. And then I crack up, thinking of Nigel Tufnel saying that D minor is really the saddest of all keys and people weep instantly when they hear it. But I do sometimes have that reaction. It's bizarre that music can do that to you.
I agree with e-wind and zamjam, in the overall assesement of the band, one of my top 10 all-time, and top 5 still currently active. As overused and cliche as this is, Tweety really is a genius.
I would also recommend anyone that hasn't seen I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, the documentary of the making of YHF, do yourself a favor and see it.
A great non-album track, and there are quite a few, is their cover of Woody Guthrie's 'Jolly Banker', and there's some stuff on compilations that's quite good as well.
One last thing, w/r/t Wilco (the album), I think that it get's a really bad rap. Is it one of their best? No, not when their best are YHF and AGIB. But, compared to 'normal' bands, it's still a solid effort and worth the time (eventually). I guess, having listened to Wilco for maybe 10+ years, Wilco (the album) is a little different for me, in that I NEEDED it when it was released. So I gave it a lot of good listens and developed an affinity. I suppose if I got into them more recently, and had the backlog of their entire catalogue, it wouldn't seem as impressive or necessary, but when you have listened to everything over and over, getting new Wilco music is always a treat. I guess I only say this, so that two years from now, once you have somewhat exhausted the rest of their catalogue, you don't hesitate to go to Wilco (the album), because it's still comparatively pretty damn good.
It's actually kinda funny, I just put on Wilco (the Album), just to confirm what I was writing above, and to pick out a few tracks to recommend, and realized - I recommend almost all of them. Really, it's filled with great tracks. Don't dismiss it...
I've not really listened to the Wilco self-title yet, but You and I is on there and I love that song!

I've definitely gotta echo the love for Wilco: The Album. I have NO IDEA why it gets trashed the way it does. Well, maybe I do -- there ARE some clunkers contained within. But if you just wipe-out "Everlasting Everything" and MAYBE "Deeper Down", this is up there with my favorite Wilco albums. And some of my all-time favorite Wilco tracks are contained within.
"Country Disappeared" is just sonic beauty. A wonderfully simplistic melody that stays in my head for days after listening. And I think "Solitaire" might be the most beautiful song Tweedy has ever penned. The BASS DRUM on this track breaks my heart. Full credit to Kotche on that one, what other drummer can tug at the heartstrings with percussion?! Beautiful slide work on this track as well.
"Wilco: The Song", "Sonny Feeling" and "You Never Know" are just so FUN. Pure pop bliss -- how can anyone not dig these songs? Maybe they aren't earth-shattering, but each song has something that keeps me coming back -- the chorus guitar feedback in "Wilco: The Song", the fuzzy slide solo freakout coda on "Sonny Feeling", the pounding piano in "You Never Know". Love these tracks.
I'd put "Bull Black Nova" on the same shelf as "Spiders" -- it's a paranoid pulse that grooves into a sonic blackhole. Listen to this bad boy with headphones and brace yourself.
Overall, I'd say this is a very worthy entry into the Wilco catalog, and fans would be missing out on some great music by not giving it a chance!

Great point about Tweedy solo shows. He's just such a spontaneous performer and he will really try anything live in a solo acoustic context. Really, there is not a single song in his repertoire that he won't play solo, and that's pretty amazing. I just wish he played solo a bit more, it's a bit of a rarity to get to see him solo.

LOVE Hell Is Chrome, a favorite for me, then again there's like 50 favorites for me from Wilco, so...
Also give an extra listen to Pot Kettle Black (YHF) and Company In My Back (AGIB), these are two of my absolute favorites, but don't get quite as much love as some others and are played less live. I just love these two songs.
As for a Wilco Steam Engine, not sure there is such a thing. I would say the bands are a bit different, despite some similarity, and Wilco doesn't necessarily 'jam' as much. Wilco just writes brilliant technically crafted songs, that sometimes jam. If I had to make a comparison, and I don't really feel that comfortable comparing anything to live Steam Engine (maybe the Allman's In Memory of Elizabeth Reed), I guess I would suggest maybe: Spiders (Kidsmoke), I Am Trying To Break Your Heart or Ashes of American Flags.
To me, Wilco's "Steam Engine" is "At Least That's What You Said". This song floors me, every single time.

like exist10z, I don't think Wilco really has a Steam Engine, but I did try to stretch my imagination and I thought of Sunken Treasure (kinda longer song, starts mellow and has some dissonant noise sections and good lyrics that reach an emotional peak: "Music is my saviour, I was saved by rock 'n' roll, I was tamed by rock 'n' roll, I was maimed by rock 'n' roll, got my name from rock 'n' roll")

Ditto on Mr. Whippy's suggestion of the Ashes of American Flags DVD. Its my favorite thing Wilco has ever put out, so many insane peaks of brilliance, it blows me away every time.

SOOO many good songs on Summerteeth. For one thing, MMJ's Golden and Pearl Jam's Thumbing My Way is Wilco's Via Chicago. Just an awesome, heartfelt accoustic (kind of) song.
Virtually every song on there could be in my personal Wilco "greatest hits. I was gonna list the best on the record but I wouldve ended up writing the first 10 tracks.
Can't believe Via Chicago hasn't been mentioned. This song is everything that is great about Wilco. Poppy, melodic, psychedelic freak out all wrapped up in one.

Via chicago is defintely one of my favorite, but it may be a hard pill to swallow live if you arent used to the album version. The first time my girlfriend saw Wilco with me she said "I thought they just fucked up..." after the first noisy part.
Its a brilliant but tough lyric to swallow, too. "I dreamed about killing you again last night and it felt alright to me" Especially if you consider it an autobiographical song directed toward his wife. Tweedy is nothing if not bravely honest in his songwriting. I love how Jeff and John can stay right on the beat while the rest of the band goes into sonic freakout mode!
Same goes for At Least That's What You Said: "I thought it was cute for you to kiss my purple black eye / even though I caught it from you / I still think we're serious"
Another thing I respect so much about Wilco is that before they do a show, the review previous setlists of shows they have played in that town and make sure to include songs they have not played in that town before, or at least not played in a while there.
It's pretty cool to put that level of care and detail into your setlists.

I've always wondered if MMJ did this or not. I feel like if I was in a band with such a great catalogue of songs that I would always pour a lot of detail in sets and I would make sure to add variety and change often.

As for guest appearances by anybody from Louisville, I think the visit by Wilco at Forecastle wasn't exactly driven by friendship, considering Tweedy's purported opinion of MMJ. But if that happens, all the better!

I plan on doing this in 2013, but it may be too early to commit now.
Right now, I'm planning on trying for one of the early worm passes, at only $99. I might try to grab a second one, so I'll let folks know if I have an extra.
I don't know that I believe that my morning racket Mumbo Jumbo. Didn't wilco invite MMJ on stage once and say "this is gonna rock" and cover don't fear the reaper?

I'm a huge Wilco fan, but Tweedy is indeed a major ass. For whatever reason he seems to talk a lot of shit about other musicians/bands. I think he's one insecure dude!

Yac - there was a Solid Sound last year, it was this year that they took off. And someone mentioned rain - yes, it was wet as hell. They had to delay the first night's show about an hour because of lightning but when they finally came out they tore shit down.
I'm glad they took the year off because I think the fest organizers needed to regroup. It was fun but not as fun as it should have been in my opinion. Either Way I'll be there next summer with bells on.

It rained in 2011 (no SSF in 2012)...Friday and Saturday nights, torrential downpours. We also got a quick storm on Sunday, but then we got to see Levon Helm Band close out the fest.
This is a fantastic festival...not crowded, the art installations are amazing, they're raising a lot of money for charity and, most importantly, beer is so reasonably priced! :tongue: As far as artist collaborations, it's my understanding there are always artists with whom Wilco or its members have collaborated in some form or another.
I do remember Tweedy making that comment, and Stirratt himself had a little eye roll to give recently when someone mentioned MMJ opening up for Wilco a few years ago. Then someone pointed out I'm a big Jacket fan and he seemed kind of embarrassed. :grin:
I snagged an early worm and booked a hotel early on, so I'll be there, God willing.
I've got two early worm passes, so I will be there with a friend who hates MMJ, but we go way back so I won't let that ruin our relationship. Working on convincing another friend to join us. We're thinking of camping. Looking forward to it!

Yes! We're pretty much as definite as you can be without yet having tickets or a room booked. Between the holidays, new years, and the engagement I've been spending money like I have it. Once I catch up I'm getting us tickets. My girl isn't big on camping so we'll definitely be getting a room. I'm thinking I should book a room before as soon as possible.

You might want to start making calls NOW. I booked back in June and it was already tight. Apparently the festival/band booked the entire Holiday Inn, so there are a lot of rooms off the table in an already too small market.
In fact, I am scouting around for a room for a friend and someone just told me there are absolutely no rooms in North Adams or in the immediate surrounding areas.
Ouch, seriously? In 2011 we stayed in Vermont which was about a 20 minute drive to N Adams. I was hoping to avoid that this year. Thanks for the heads up, guess I better get my ass in gear.
Unfortunately, yes. A bunch of us tried to book the Holiday Inn the day reservations opened, only to be told the festival booked the entire hotel. Most of us were able to find a place relatively close by, though. You might want to start calling and putting your name on waiting lists if any of the places offer that.

Summerteeth is great so far, but I need to listen to it some more before I figure out how it fits among the other greats. Via Chicago is ridiculous! A Ghost Is Born is probably my favorite album so far, although I love all of the ones I own (AGIB, ST, HYF, SBS, WL, BT, and Kicking Television).
I really love Whole Love for some reason. I think Art of Almost is one of their best. One Sunday Morning is beautifully haunting and I have grown fond of it. I also can't get enough of Dawned on Me, Whole Love, I Might etc.
At Least That's What You Said is super amazing. I love the build to the jammy guitar bit. It is definitely up there for me.

After whining yesterday about the way they were announcing the lineup, I woke up this morning totally excited to follow along online.
If you look at the last 2 SS lineups, I don't think there's any question this is the strongest to date. The only case that can be made is 2011 featured Levon Helm. But as a whole, I think this year takes the cake. I started listening to Foxygen and am really digging it. Will definitely check their set out.
I wish Wilco played Boston once in awhile. I need to see them live already. :cheesy:
They played September 2011 at the Wang, and April 2010 at the Orpheum. Not to mention shows in Concord NH, Burlington, Hartford, Providence, Newport, Portland, etc the past couple years....

I think I just missed the wang in terms of when i got into Wilco enough to see them live . I can't really get to those other places cause I rarely have enough money for a ticket alone let alone money to travel to those places.
One of the many nice things about wilco is that they've kept their ticket prices relatively low...they're still in the $40s. Good on them.

Yikes! It was $45 before fees for last summer's New England tour. The thing about ticket prices, once the decision is made and the ticket is bought, the price you paid is forgotten as you're bathing in the outstanding live music experience.
We always pay over the top prices down here though. Might have something to do with being at the arse end of nowhere!
speaking of ticket prices, 170$ isn't THAT MUCH for a pair of tickets to see Jeff Tweedy since its for charity. hint, hint, chicago peeps.
Does anyone know the reason why Wilco's shows aren't available on archive.org? I know a lot of their recordings are available at the Wilco Archive but it's not as organized and informative as Archive. It's frustrating, I wish they would just make them available on there already.

Well I'm kind of glad I passed on this, I would definitely leave on Sunday morning.
Yeah Sunday isn't looking too hot for me either. I wouldn't mind catching Autumn Defense and even OS but there is a good chance we leave early Sunday. Regardless, 2 Wilco shows plus a nice looking lineup on Saturday, all in the Berkshire Mountains, make it all worth while.

Me and my crew are staying at Savoy Mountain State Forest Campground, up in the highlands, about a 15 minute drive. Sweet, sweet campground, with a pond for swimming, some great grassy sites, stars to die for. Last night was the 1st night of the Opera House run. Shortest non-festival Wilco set I've ever seen. All done in just on 90 minutes. Felt like it was over just as it was getting started. Bit disappointing to be honest. Hopefully tonight they go a bit longer due to the webcast, but I'm not getting my hopes up....
The 2 Melbourne shows were also hampered by curfews but were both 2 hrs. Great shows though.
Shouldn't be complaining really. The last 4 weeks have been insane. 8 crazy horse and 4 wilco shows. Now I've gotta pay the credit card off so I can afford Bridge Benefit in October...

Well, so much for my plan to see this, I woke up at 2 after having crazy dreams about getting webcasts set up and couldn't go back to sleep. When I finally did get back to sleep, I had more crazy dreams and sure as hell didn't want to get up at 5 when the alarm went off, so I shut it off and went back to sleep. With more crazy dreams, this time with MMJ playing at a nice theater in Oklahoma that doesn't exist, and Jim James complimenting my smoking jacket.

I agree about Dancefloors and Monday being very similar. Amazing. I'm starting to "get" Wilco a bit, but I don't see them becoming a top 10 favorite of mine.
Don't Fear the Reaper collaboration is great. I really hope they do that together this summer.

OK, given that the Ashes of American Flags movie is coming up quite a bit, I had a question about the movie.
Flake and I were watching it not that long ago, and we got to the part at the end credits where there is this old man with Jeff saying that he is Jeff's dad. I always thought that was just some random old person and Jeff sort of goes along with him saying he is his dad just to make fun of the guy, but Flake thought it really was his dad.
Does anyone know for certain?

I'm not 100% certain but I'm almost positive that that's his pop. Despite the lyrics in One Sunday Morning, him and his father have a really good relationship. I remember reading an interview where Jeff talks about how his dad gets pumped up for their shows.
I'm 100% certain that's his dad. Can't you tell from their faces? They have the exact same bulbous nose and round face. Jeff even makes a joke about it. That's a funny part when his Dad is going on and on about how proud he is of his son's accomplishments and Jeff gets embarrassed.
Apparently his dad also encouraged him to write the song Casino Queen. The story goes Jeff was all bummed out about losing his money on one of those riverboat casinos and was telling his dad about it. His dad said "Well, why don't you just write a song about it. You might get some of your money back from the song one day." Such a down to earth Midwestern guy.

The lyrics in One Sunday Morning aren't written from Jeff's perspective. It's all based on a really frank conversation he had with the writer Jane Smiley's boyfriend.
If you're looking for personal family type lyrics, see Please Tell My Brother. That's one's written about Jeff's family members, with a verse for each.
OK, so I guess the consensus is that it really is his dad he is with in that scene at the end of Ashes of American Flags. That just surprises me as he is so condescending and sarcastic to the person, it's just hard for me to see him treating his dad that way.

It's defintely his Dad.
I never thought of him as being condescending and sarcastic to his Dad in that scene. I was just always struck by how awkward and anxious Jeff seems to be around all those people.

I don't think this has been posted yet. AXSTV (340 on Directv) had an hour long Wilco special last night at 11:45. They were live, and the discription only said, "Music. (2013) The band performs "War on War" and "Jesus, etc." High-Def, CC, Special." It is scheduled for re-broadcast today, June 24, 2013 at 3:30 am (only 2 and a half hours from right now) and once more at 2:00 pm.

I don't think this has been posted yet. AXSTV (340 on Directv) had an hour long Wilco special last night at 11:45. They were live, and the discription only said, "Music. (2013) The band performs "War on War" and "Jesus, etc." High-Def, CC, Special." It is scheduled for re-broadcast today, June 24, 2013 at 3:30 am (only 2 and a half hours from right now) and once more at 2:00 pm.
i recorded it. Its from 2003, a PBS Soundstage performance.

Yeah, you know, you're absolutely right. "Standard" probably wasn't a very accurate description. I've never seen them open with "I Got You". I've only seen it near the end of a show with "Red-Eyed And Blue" proceeding it. And songs like "At My Window", "Just A Kid" and "Summerteeth" are definitely not standards.
I suppose what I meant was I thought there would be more of these types of rarities/deep cuts (John's "It's Just That Simple", "Blasting Fonda", "Cars Can't Escape","A Magazine Called Sunset", "Dash 7") as opposed to the amount of usual fare played ("IG", "A Shot In The Arm", "Via Chicago", "HMD", "ITMWLY"). Not a complaint, I still loved the show.

"Wilco: The Song" is a great tongue-in-cheek rocker, "Bull Black Nova" is a pounding, circling psychedelic trip if there ever was one, and "Solitaire" is one of the most tender songs Wilco has ever recorded. Kotche's near-silent kick drum on "Solitaire" gets me everytime. It takes a master musician to bring out emotion using the most emotionless instrument there is.
But anyway, "You Never Know", "Sonny Feeling", great rockers I still listen to often. "Country Disappeared" is a fantastic song, another great tender ballad that Tweedy nails and Nels' guitar work on this track is so understated. People rip this album for not "featuring" Nels, but man, the fretwork is there, you just gotta listen for it.
The only times the album comes even close to "dissappointing" for me is "Deeper Down" as the second track -- this song never really did it for me -- and "Everlasting Everything" as the album finale. Country Disappeared - I love this almost as much as the song Ashes of American Flags, similar mood and topic, I think.
Wilco The Song is just fun, I'd love to hear it live again, it was a good opener, IMO.

You and I and I'll Fight are amazing songs as well. I freakin love this album and never understood the disrespect for it. Country Disappeared is one of my absolute favorite Wilco songs. Totally agree w/ Shug, though...I fast forward Bull Black Nova every time.

I don't hate WTA, it (and SBS) just fall to the bottom when I think of their albums. If I were to place them into tiers, Level 1 - I love Being There through Ghost, Level 2 - a little notch below, but still love AM and Whole Love. Then, for me, there is a separation and SBS and WTA. That said, I love Impossible Germany every time I hear it, love One Wing, but just don't find myself ever motivated to listen to the whole album of these two, whereas I don't have this issue with any of their other releases.
So no hate, just not absolute love for me. Hopefully that made sense.

This is pretty close to where I am although I think I'd move SBS up to Level 2 and leave WTA at Level 3. Like you, I have little interest in listening to all of WTA. I love Country Disappeared and One Wing, and I'd go as far as to say I'll Fight is quite good, too. But the rest is just really disappointing to me. I think The Whole Love proves how sub-par WTA was and that this incarnation of the band is capable of so much more.
As an aside...as much as I can't stand "You And I" I have to admit that when I saw/heard Jeff and Feist perform it at a Jeff solo show in Toronto, it was a pretty good, i.e. not awful.

Well, I'm still kind of new to Wilco, so I'm giving them a try. When I got my ticket for the Americanarama tour (Nashville on 6/30/2013), I knew I would have to give them a listen before the show. Luckily, AXSTV showed a 2003 Soundstage performance of their's about a week before I was to see them live. I watched this hour long show on my DVR probably 3 or 4 times before Nashville and have watched it an additional 5 or 6 times since. Last week, FYE in the mall had Wilco Live - Ashes Of AmericanFlags on sale for $10! I jumped on it and am giving it a nice loud showing right now. I like them a lot, but I don't see me falling in love with them like I have MMJ. However, I will start my collection as of now! They are worth it!
After seeing them twice again this summer I am fully back into my Wilco obsession. It had been 3 years since the last time I saw them, but they KILLED it in Toronto and Buffalo on Americanarama and now I am back on that bus.

Looks like Wilco will be playing an aftershow for ACL Fest on October 11th. They posted on FB last night that they had two bits of Austin related news, one being that they're going to air their latest ACL taping in the near future and to mark your calendars for October 11th. There's an announcement sometime today, but I'm pretty sure it's for an aftershow and on my birthday no less!!!! Fuck yes!!!!!

Chromecast is similar to Apple TV but much less expensive ($35 compared to $100). It looks like a USB drive, it plugs into your HDMI port, gets power from either an available USB port on your TV or it has an adapter. You set it up on your wireless network and can stream video from your laptop, phone or tablet using supported apps like Netflix or Youtube. Chromecast has a growing # of apps and you can use practically any device with it but i haven't gotten much further than streaming concert footage from my iPad to my TV. For that, it's worth the $35 alone.
Chromecast does seem like a good deal, though I'm getting a bit overloaded with all the streaming media options, between DirecTV's apps, my Vizio TV's apps, my Samsung Blu-ray player's apps, tablets, iPhones, my Galaxy S4, and on and on...
When I find YouTube video of decent quality, especially a pro-shot full show such as this, I copy and paste the YouTube URL at keepvid.com and download the highest quality mp4 to my desktop (720p in the case of this Wilco show). I then use DVD Flick to create a DVD file and use DVD-cloner 9 to burn a DVD. Its a bit of an old-school approach, I suppose, having a physical DVD, but works for me.
I really need a Wilco tour as badly as an MMJ tour.
The Via Chicago -> Spiders (Acoustic) -> Impossible Germany was amazing on that video.

I grew up in Chicago, they are a fucking Staple. Hands down one of the coolest bands. I've seen them 10 times and MMJ and Ryan Bingham opened and they did Casino Queen which i have never seen live. and it was awesome. Also Bob Dylan played but he phoned it in. He's a legend but I was really wanting to feel like i'm sixteen again hearing I'm alright Ma I"m only bleeding for the first time again. but I couldn't even sing along to Tangled up in Blue because it was like a cabaret jazz revue weird jazzy thing he was doing but fucking a right am i glad to have seen Dylan before I or he dies.

Hey, I was at that show, too! The Moore Theatre was so freaking cold that night, although it didn't really seem to matter much once the show started.
Yeah, I'd love it if Jeff and his new band made it back this way, however, I think it's a bit of a long shot given he was just here. I made an impulse purchase for their upcoming Austin show last week.

Jeff Tweedy/TWEEDY was damn fuckin good last night!!
I've seen Wilco a bunch but always wanted to see one of those solo acoustic Jeff Tweedy shows, which is what I thought I was getting when I bought these tickets. Instead though I got the best of both: Saw TWEEDY play most if not all of their upcoming album. It was all good, really good. And then a set of just Jeff Tweedy on acoustic, some songs with harmonica, play some Wilco favorites: Via Chicago, Jesus,etc, I am Trying to Break Your Heart, Hummingbird etc., Then the band came back for 2-3 more, including California Stars!!, and then again Jeff came back alone and did Misunderstood at the front of the stage with no mics!
Plus it was at The beautiful Brown Theater where the sound is fantastic. And the crowd was very well behaved and there was a No Camera policy, which I really appreciate in seated dark theaters.

Yes. Last night ruled. I have seen Wilco 5 times I think, but that was my first "solo" show. Jeff is such a great entertainer! I will say that last night was probably the most fun show I've seen of a musician doing a solo set (counting only the 2nd half).
You and I ruled. Thats one of my favorite songs off of W(TA). Passenger Side, New Madrid, GBTKTMH, and Via Chicago were other highlights. And, of course, Misunderstood: one of my all time favorite Wilco songs, and one of my all time favorite record opening songs from any band. On top of that, Tweedy's humor on stage is killer.
Loved the show from start to finish.
Here is Laminated Cat from last night's show at the Brown Theatre. (Even though there was a no camera policy, I managed to get a couple of songs recorded toward the end of the show with the glowing screen of my camera pressed up against my shirt. You couldn't see any light at all coming from my little camera. Sorry if my persistence in trying to capture a little bit of each show I attend bums anybody out...)

No doubt. So far everything I've heard has been great. I love that he is doing this. The last two Wilco album while good, sounded or felt a little bloated, these songs do not. That's not to say they sound simple either, I can't explain it.

it appears like MMJ things got in the way and early 2015 is the date set... plus they have already said a full fledged tour in 2015.

I was going primarily for Wilco, too (also DBT and Tom Petty) but I decided to do the two Ohio shows instead. They're a lot easier for me to get to and the Lockn lineup isn't exactly my cup of tea.

I would imagine both releases will end up being pretty interesting. Wilco doesn't really seem like the band that would release a boring 15 song greatest hits with no added appeal. I could be wrong though

Yeah both Cap shows sold out in under an hour I think, crazy. I'm fortunate I was able to snag a pair for both nights. Really looking forward to this, especially since the shows are being billed as "An Evening With".

I saw the two Ohio shows this week and the band sounded great. They seemed genuinely happy to be back at it after an 11-month break. Lots of smiles. Jeff was having fun. Cars Can't Escape. Magazine Called Sunset. Good times.

It's killing me that I'm going to have to skip these shows. I was thinking of trying for the third night which goes on sale tomorrow but I just can't afford it. Also kinda tough to make it up to Port Chester cuz of work. I will need to see Wilco again soon but I would have loved to go to one of the shows at the Capitol.

@everythingchanges you are very right. that drum beat is sick. any who i just made a post/thread about Tweedy separate from this thread and it was long and rambling like i do. So you know check it out. Let's talk about the record a bit. I'm enjoying the hell of out of it. and i've only listened three times roughly. I can't wait for the tenth where i'm well versed with the 20 songs and i'm ready to really say whether or not i love, enjoyed, or just thought it was ok because it is so rare for me to say i didn't like music. I think the only time i did that was when a psychedelic orchestra played after my friends indie band and it was just screeching on violins and violas to random snare beats. Really tests the nerves. i'm out.
I'm loving the new Tweedy. Each listen is better than the last. Either I'm completely infatuated with JT, and think he can do wrong, or he's done it again and proved that he can do no wrong.
I'm really digging it too, e. I'm waiting for the CD (shush) to arrive so I can play it loud on my home stereo. I wish I could have caught one of the Tweedy shows to hear this stuff live. I wonder if any of these will make their way into a Wilco set list anytime soon?

Take me back to 2008 and 2010 Wilco tours when they did this night after night. Apologies to Glenn's hands and Nels' neck in advance. In 2011, Glenn told me they'd do this again someday, I hope that day has come, but I really wonder if he and Nels can take it. They ain't spring chickens anymore.
So the 3 nights in Tennessee are done and holy shit those were some great setlists! 30 song shows, no repeats for 2 nights at the Ryman and then a whole bunch of other great songs in Knoxville. I am fucking bummed I am now missing the Ryman, 3 nights at the Cap AND 5 nights in Chicago. They didn't announce their tour plans for this year until after all my concert travel money was spent, that sucks.
People who are going to these shows should be fucking stoked if they keep this 20th anniversary thing going. Lucky bastards!
I was just coming here to comment about how awesome the setlists are looking after the first three. Really glad to see no repeats at the Ryman. They didn't even play anything from W(TA) or TWL on night 2, crazy! If they go no repeats during the entire PC run I'll be thrilled. It should be the shit regardless.
That Knoxville setlist is probably the best set I've seen (not in person, just on the internetz).

Yeah, Knoxville looked great with the return of At Least That's What You Said, Company In My Back, Country Disappeared, One Wing, Ashes and then At My Window Sad and Lonely, The Lonely 1, Passenger Side and unamplified acoustic Misunderstood, wow so many nuggets in there.
Hope they bring this tour out west in 2015!

I scored a GA ticket for tomorrow at the Cap for $60 off of craigslist today and could not be more excited. Money is tight, but I couldnt justify missing all of these shows, especially after seeing these recent setlists.

Tuesdays' Wilco show, 1st of the 3 Cap shows, was pretty damn good. The setlist was outstanding and Nels Cline could be the most fun guitarist to ever watch play. It was great meeting and watching the show with headhunter and Angelo, hopefully we'll have some MMJ shows to look forward to in the near future. Here's a good recording of the show...

If you guys have not heard any of the official PC recordings yet I URGE you to check them out! So far I just have the first night and it rocks, it sports a really sick You Are My Face. It's amazing how they pretty much nailed all of these songs the way they did over those 3 nights, especially since not really having toured since Americanarama. If anyone has nights 2 or 3 and wants to trade pm me. I'm sure I'll be getting AMF for xmas so I held off on that.

Those NYC taper recordings are audience recordings, which some folks think are just fine and some actually prefer. Others might prefer the official soundboards that Angelo was mentioning for more clarity and less of the room/audience. The SBDs sound pretty damn good to my ears. But those AUD recordings are really good, too. helps that they were recorded right at the soundboard.
I've got all the AUD's from PC and I thought all 3 nights were real good. There's a little audience chatter here and there, but the overall sound quality is real food for AUD recordings if you ask me.
Personally, I prefer the AUD recordings if they are good quality as it gives you the feel of actually being there... :beer:

were there non-aud PC recordings? I only ask because I have the ones they sold and they definitely have audience chatter ("They're not stopping, they're not stopping" is my fave audience chatter I can hear)

I bought the ALAC version and then burned it to CD as I wanted best possible quality. It rips on my home system! The night 1 soundboard has plenty of audience noise between songs and during, but it doesn't overwhelm. I heard complaints of too many chatterers near the back of the room and that it affected the aud recordings but I haven't listened so I can't comment.
Just ordered Alpha Mike Foxtrot from Amazon. Hope it's good! Im curious to know anyone's opinion of it? :drum:
In regards to Alpha Mike Foxtrot - I like it a lot. One of the things I like best about Wilco is hearing the different incarnations of songs that have appeared throughout the years. Listening through to this compilation really made me remember that part of my love for them. There are some really excellent live versions of different songs - especially the stuff from AGIB. A lot of folks over at Via Chicago were pretty grumbly when the tracklist was released but overall, I think the consensus is that it's a pretty great package - especially with all the liner notes.
I love AMF. I love a lot of the b sides and unreleased stuff. The alternate version of Hunmingbird is incredible. And the liner notes.... :thumbsup:

if you're a superfan of wilco like me you will love it... It's been non-stop playing since I got it. So much difference between the era's and amazing little nuggets in this set.
Now THIS is a fuckin' Wilco setlist!!! Wilco (The Song) opener, Total Pros horn section!!!! and on Monday and You Never Know! Dreamer in My Dreams, Stirrat lead vocal Its Just That Simple, ELECTRIC version of Spiders (finally!), Sunken Treasure and Misunderstood and Someday Soon amongst lots of other nuggets and rarities. I think I may prefer the first nights setlist. I love that they opened a 6 night run in Chicago with Via Chicago, and I love that Outta Site/Outta Mind duo to close one encore and start the other. I do love Wilco (the song) as an opener though. Definitely a ton of nuggets in that setlist Shug posted. I really wish I wouldn't have slept on these.
I know, us too, Eric. LD and I have been wanting to see a Wilco run in Chicago. Missed the incredible shrinking tour in 2011 and this one was announced so late in the year, all the travel $ was already spent. I wish they'd announce this stuff with more notice. I'm hoping for some West Coast Wilco shows this spring or summer.

Really bummed I didn't make it to any Wilco shows recently. I was too busy with starting a new job and graduating college! I hope they come back towards Indy or somewhere near soon, now that I can relax a bit.

dude the hummingbird demo is my favorite thing about the whole boxset. When its starting it sounds so sludgy and not like it fits with the lyrics, then by the time all the instruments are in it is just beautiful. Love it

Smart move on their part to announce another SS consisting of Wilco headlining both Friday and Saturday nights + Tweedy + Tweedy solo + Tweedy and Friends then keep the early birds on sale for one more day. It sure as shit sold me. All of that alone for $125 is an absolute steal. Plus there's an entire lineup to be announced. Then add to that the grounds and town the fest is held on and it should be a no-brainer for any Wilco fan within driving distance. Hopefully they keep the attendance numbers around the same as SS13.

You should check out Real Estate and Richard Thompson. The other two I don't know anything about.
Bill Frisell is a jazz guitarist who has done some interesting things over the years, but not someone I've followed closely.
Richard Thompson being there has me really interested due to the possibility of seeing him sit in with Wilco like he did on the Americanarama tour. I'm very envious of anyone who got to see that.

Candyman, I could be mistaken but I don't think SS has ever sold out. Hopefully they announce the lineup within the next few weeks. Hopefully we have MMJ dates around the same time. You should have plenty of time after both announcements to get tix.
Other possibilities for Solid Sound going by their Facebook page are Ryley Walker, Kevin Morby, Cibo Matto, and Mac DeMarco.

Where I started with Thompson a very long time ago was the two most highly regarded he made with his ex-wife Linda, Shoot Out the Lights (from 1982) and I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight (from 1972).
Most of his 80's and 90's records have some great songs but suffer from bad production in my opinion.
Of his more recent studio records, my favorites are Mock Tudor (from 1999) and The Old Kit Bag (from 2003). Dream Attic (from 2010) is cool in that it is a record of new material that was all recorded live.
The most recent thing he has put out is called Acoustic Classics, and it is a solo acoustic studio recording of a bunch of his older songs. It's a great representation of what he is like when he plays solo acoustic.
Also, he's put out a ton of official live recordings that are great as they really highlight his guitar playing much more than on record. Most of those are on Spotify. Some of the good official live recordings are Two Letter Words, Semi-Detatched Mock Tudor, More Guitar, Live Warrior, and Ducknapped.

For SS 2013, soundboard recordings were available from Wilco's store.
I saw no less than 3 different tapers for night 1. Wasn't really looking for night 2, but saw at least one for Tweedy's closing set on Sunday. The fest was awesome as always, by the way. This being my third trip to SS, I've never once had a shitty experience whether with a fan or staff. Everyone is cool as shit and it can be like a little utopia up there. I wish I would've brought socks though, that was a mistake. I need to consult with Sassbox before heading out next time to make sure I have everything I need.
One thing you can be guaranteed of at SS is people getting there early and lining up chairs and blankets all over the place on Joe's field, including the rail. It doesn't bother me as much as others but I chuckle thinking of people trying to get away with that at an MMJ show.
I'm listening to the acoustic night 1 show for the second time today and it keeps getting better. I loved it when I saw it live and wasn't sure if it was attributable to a combo of adult beverages and such, plus being back at SS, but it is just as good if not better than I remembered. I admit I felt slightly disappointed knowing we would get an all acoustic set even though I had thoroughly enjoyed the mini sets from last year's PC run. I was skeptical about how it would translate to a large outdoor summer concert. I was definitely wrong. Every band member could be heard clearly in the mix and Jeff's voice was strong.

Yea I remember thinking that an entire acoustic set was not something I'd be excited for. Not that I went to SS, but I listened to the live stream of the show that night on WFUV and really, really enjoyed it. Some of the songs just sounded completely different and new, it was pretty awesome and the crowd sounded to be really into it as well

I decided to skip the Bloomington show. I just saw Wilco in May and saw tweedy last weekend at Forecastle. Always love their shows, but tix are $60 and it's not necessary that I go.
Will be on the lookout for more Roadcases though! Love that they do that.

Much like how MMJ was put in my life back in 2008, over the years Wilco has shown up on my Pandora radar numerous times. And, whenever I hear them I dig the song. But, never got hooked like I did when I heard Amazed by MMJ.
That said, based on the 5 or 6 songs Ive heard off Pandora, how Wilco fans talk about the band playing live and the fact that I am super impressed with Nels Cline I decided to grab some tickets to a show in Boston this January. Also, its less of a commitment than a weekend at their Solid Sound Fest.
The weird thing is, yesterday I decided to buy their album YTF as it's proclaimed by most to be a force in music folklore. I listened and was really disappointed. I expected much much more. It just did not click!?! Maybe it was the timing. Of course I will give it another go.
The good news is that my disappointment prompted me to explore more of their albums. Wow!! Their live in Chicago album sounds incredible. Thats what I was looking for!! And most of the other songs I previewed did as well from the rest of their catalog.
Maybe my relationship with Wilco will not be like MMJ where I just gobbled it all up and continue to do so. Maybe they come in and out and slowly unravel for me. Either way, Im excited for the show!

Kicking Television, Live in Chicago is really great. Their live show is really something special and I doubt you will be disappointed.
Exactly what wheelhousetunes said. YHF is a grower. I had never heard of Wilco before YHF, had no clue about the hype surrounding it leading to its release, so I was able to listen with completely unbiased ears. I wasn't impressed at first. A girl I used to work with at a record store used to play it constantly and eventually it clicked to the point where I fell in love with the damn thing. It planted the seed for an eventual Wilco obsession that lasts to this day.
With all of that being said, if you're coming into it with all of the hype surrounding their live shows, I can easily see how YHF would disappoint you. As Jeff once said about the album...there is a lot of "space" throughout, much different than a typical Wilco live show today. Stick with it and it may click.

I wouldn't expect 5 to 7 repeats on top of Star Wars, that number is inflated. They played the new album in its entirety to open pretty much every show it seemed, but at the same time I don't think they did any multi-night runs at the same venue. Not sure if true but it's been said that Wilco will look at past sets when they revisit a city in an effort to not play the same shit. But beyond all of that, I saw their entire 3 night run in Port Chester last year, they played 90 songs and only repeated one (Give Back The Key To My Heart). They didn't repeat any songs at the past 3 Solid Sounds either.
I would not expect any repeats for a multi-night run at the same venue.

Star Wars each night. i'm going off my own experiences and when they played a two night Red Rocks stand a few summers back they did repeat 5-7 tunes. in fact Tweedy (half-joking) made sure to let us know early on the second night that those hoping for no repeats were seeing the wrong kind of band!

I think we can all agree that there really is no reason for Wilco to repeat songs in situations like these. There's too many great songs for that nonsense. Still trying to weasel my way into the 1st night of their Boston shows. Its my wife b day weekend. We always head up to Boston and stay in the Omni Parker House hotel. So she gets final call on Friday night festivities. 2nd nights show already in the bag tho.

I beat this drum constantly for newbies, but you ABSOLUTELY MUST get the live DVD Ashes of American Flags. Serious. Its the highlights of a 5 or 6 show run at notable venues (Cain's, Tipitina's, 9:30 Club, Ryman) in 2008, the band was on fire, Jeff was wearing his Nudie suit, they had a horn section sit in for some of the shows and it is as beautifully filmed as The Last Waltz. Its seriously to me among the top 5 rock performance films of all time. I would go to extremely great lengths if I could have access to the video outtakes of these shows, particularly the night at the Ryman when Tweedy was all pumped up on steroids. They were ON FIRE!!!!
It is, to me, by far the most perfect representation of everything that is great about Wilco. I'm sure fans have wildly varying opinions, but I hold mine very strongly, ha ha ha!

Jeff Tweedy's solo DVD Sunken Treasure is a great way to hear Wilco tunes stripped down. You also get some heady insight into Jeff Tweedy's personality. Both are worth the price of admission.
As is Ashes Of American Flags.
I don't forgot about I Am Trying To Break Your Heart - deluxe dvd (must be deluxe). That's got tons of great stuff on it.

Can't argue with AOAF. There was a time it felt like I watched it like it was Seinfeld reruns. I sort of burned myself out on it, I need to watch it again.
Ok. Finally got to see the band. The show and musicianship were great. Nels blew my mind!! We were set up directly in front of him and his gear six rows back. We now own all the albums and talk about how we wish we were turned on much sooner.

NELS!!!! Him and Springsteen rock harder at 60 and 66 respectively than most 1/3 their age!!
And Glenn Kotche on drums is just unbelievable. Can't wait to see them again next week.

Precisely, for the show I attended (2nd night). However, looking at the 1st nights set they did not include an acoustic set.

Thanks! I've had really shitty ticket luck this spring, so I was pleasantly surprised. Of course I lucked out with the band I can see any old time :rolleyes: but still.
anyone interested in going to the show in philly on Sat. at the Mann for free? A friend of mine can't make it so he just gave them to me (I offered to pay him, but he said no it's cool). They're seated tix, not sure exactly where but pretty sure not in the balcony and def. not in the lawn.

I'm an on and off fan of Wilco. I'm really getting into the Kicking Television/Ghost is Born phase right now. Anyone have any good live show suggestions?
So with Kicking Television, you have probably the best recording of that timeframe. OI just gave a quick listen to the bootlegs I have, and from that period I'd suggest are from Italy 2004 and Montreal 2005, not sure of the venues here. I also recommend tracking down their 5 night no repeat sets in Chicago, February 2008. Wilco has some great stuff floating around out there on the internets. The engineering demos of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot are interesting to hear.

played someone to lose... an obvious choice for late night.. not many songs from the new album could be played in that time slot. Sounds like a folky version of a YHF track.
Incredible time at the Fillmore couple weeks back. Ended up getting a hotel right by the venue and the whole band was staying their as well. Chatted briefly with Glenn, super nice guy.
Saw 2 of the three nights in LA, night two was as an inspired a show as I've seen them play. Wilco are still at the top of their game. Stayed at the Ace hotel in the same building as the venue and saw the band a bunch there too. John Stirrat is a nice dude too.

Just got tickets for Austin in October.
The show last night in Knoxville was UNREAL! The band was so on top of it. The crowd was electric. Just an awesome evening and more to come tonight!

Pretty good setlist, pulling from all over their catalog. I can't believe they've stopped playing 'I Am Trying To Break Your Heart' at every show. And how weird to see a show without 'Misunderstood' or 'Sunken Treasure'.
I'll be tracking this show down when it's gets loose on the internets.

i'll be there, too. tried my best to score front row balcony, but had to settle for orchestra 16th row, dead center. good enough.
had to move a vacation week so i can enjoy a wednesday night show without that damn 3:55am alarm hanging over my head, but no way was i going to miss this one.

I got seats in the last row of the small front section of the balcony on the presale. I feel like I only want to sit upstairs these days. It just sounds so great up there!!
