Title: Has anyone ever met the band?
Post by: JerseyBoy on Apr 27, 2011, 09:06 PM
I have a friend/coworker who knows one of their guitar techs. He got me an Aftershow pass back in 2008 but the band rarely or never goes to those. Earlier this year I saw them at Chastain Park in ATL. I went hours early with my wife and listened to the sound check outside the gates. I waited until after the soundcheck and saw Jim walking between the 2 tour buses about 20 feet away. I was outside the gate and got his attention. I asked him if I could get a picture with him, and he just stopped, looked at me, and then turned and kept walking. I then saw Carl a couple minutes later and he just dissed me too. He waved at me and put his head down and acted like he didn't want to be bothered whatsoever. I've been a huge fan since 03' and talked with Patrick at the 40 Watt Club back in 05 or 06, he was nice. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences. I was pretty let down that they couldn't take 1 minute to take a picture with a true fan. Still my favorite band, but very disappointing.

Damn, that seems really out of character. Must be because you are from jersey ( just kidding, Im from jersey too).

Yes, a lot of people on this here forum have met the band, and most have had good experiences to my knowledge.

We met Jim after the Appalachian voices show in Brooklyn, and then Bo and Carl after the Philly show this summer, and then again at the Carl show at joes pub during the t5 week, we met Tommy, Patrick, Carl, and JOHNNY QUAID! Whoa.

They were so gracious each and every time, sorry to hear about your brush with fame....keep coming back!

And just an aside....about the Carl comment, I get the sense that he is a little on the introverted side so maybe it was just that.  Jim too is sort of really soft spoken and not super chatty. I would say the chatty cathys are Patrick and Johnny.  :D

Everytime I've interacted with any of them they've been very nice, but Patrick seems to be one of the nicest guys ever. Just last night at the decemberists show Jim approached my brother and got him into a sold out show. The crazy part is that he approached my brother and asked if he could help, not the other way around

I met Carl briefly after I saw the guys at the Pemberton Festival. He was just wandering through the crowd so I mustered up the courage to come say hello. He was very gracious and friendly. I was walking on sunshine for the entire rest of the day pretty much.

From everything I've heard, when it comes to real life they are all really humble and nice. I'm sure the picture, autograph, kiss my baby thing is just starting to get overwhelming for them.

I wouldn't be disappointed; 1 min of their time is a much different amount of time for them than it is for you.  If you would have come on here and said "He stopped and took a picture"  People would read that and now he has peeps lined up between the buses after every soundcheck.  Suddenly he starts to become an ass when he doesn't stop or else he ends up spending way to much time taking pictures and signing autographs.  Not to mention the fact that a picture probably turns into asking how the tour is going and where they are headed next......which I think Sonic Youth had a great song about.

Asbury Park, NJ...must have been around '04. I was wandering around outside the venue for a bit and saw a band lining up to take some pictures. I said "hey, you're My Morning Jacket" and they were shocked to be recognized it seemed. I said how they were tearing up the charts at my college radio station and I'd love if they could do a station spot for me ("hey, we're blah blah and you're listening to blah blah").

So they called my cell phone and left a message and then I ripped it off my phone and put it in the radio station and then I got thrown out of school so I will never be able to get my hands on that ever again because I'll be arrested if I set foot on campus.

Bonus: they still had long hair, and I'll never forget how during OBH they just started rocking out and made a comment saying "you know, we're not really used to this whole Mosh Pit thing, but it's been happening more and more lately". At a concert full of hippies, Patti Smith, and Sonic Youth, they not only stole the show, but got even the most stoned of the crowd to move their ass.

I heard a really cool story from a couple friends of mine who were at an mmj show in Wisconsin a few years back and decided to try to wait by the bus after the show to meet the band. So they waited for about a half hour and sure enough the guys came walking out they shook their hands and my friend decided to throw it out there that they were having a party that night and that the guys should swing by. I guess Jim said ya well see you there half jokingly, but honest to god a few hours later that night my friend got a knock on his door and it was jim and the whole crew. He said they hung around for a while had a few beers and were really nice down to earth dudes. sooo jealous of that story!

I hesitate to mention the festie's name because that was the last year it was a hippie fest. It is now the emo-whinefest known as "bamboozle". Anyway, so I went to go look up the lineup for that day of the festival and LOOK AT WHAT I FOUND:

  • Main Stage: M. Ward (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M._Ward) and Friends, Stellastarr (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellastarr), My Morning Jacket (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Morning_Jacket), Sonic Youth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Youth)

  • Stone Pony Stage: Jesse Malin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Malin), Patti Smith and Her Band (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patti_Smith), Guest Jam

  • Ocean Ave. Stage: Lake Trout (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Trout_%28band%29), On the Speakers, Ambulance LTD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambulance_LTD), French Kicks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Kicks)

  • Golddigger Jam Stage: Godbox, Blue Day Golden, Red Lyte District, Mynuskris, Guest Jam, Arthur Kill

  • Shakedown St. Stage: Johnny Lives, Low Flying Jets, Squad, Apollo Sunshine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Sunshine), Steel Train (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Train), Dios (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dios_%28Argentine_band%29)

This goes back further than any of us ever knew.

Plus, looking back at it, I wish I had the funds to go to all three days. I basically went to that as my first MMJ show. Cost me $20.

ive met all of the ville guys on numerous occasions, patrick more than anyone.  we have a good friend in common and he hangs out at my local watering hole quite a bit.  his folks and my folks grew up in the same neighborhood and have known each other a long time.  i remember about 6-7 years ago, one of my uncles asked me about mmj and i was like, what????  and he said he used to run around with pats dad in grade school/high school.  jim, ive met a few times and he is always gracious.  he offered to help out with my charity on occasion if he was available.  we just havnt figured out the best way to utilize that yet, but it is hanging out there.  tommy seems real cool, but i have spoken to him the least of any of them.

in the early days i met johnny and danny a few times at some of the first shows and was friends with chris (drummer before patrick) in college.  i guess that may be why i really started to get in to them (although i had seen them a few times before chris)... that and the blistering live shows with less than a 100 people.

Haha! I was at this fest as well. I went to see Galactic & Moe. I had never heard of MMJ. If I remember correctly, they played the small outdoor stage close to the Stone Pony. A few friends & I were walking by when they were blasting out OBH. It stopped us in our tracks. We were completely floored! Went out the next day & bought everything MMJ I could get my hands on. Pivotal musical moment in my life :)

I met Tommy in a restaurant across from the State Theatre last October in Portland, ME. He was shy, but very friendly and gave us a big smile when we shook his hand. Just let him know how much we loved the music and he thanked us for driving up from Boston. Ended up front row and he was giving us a lot of love, definitely remembered us.

Last year in Columbus OH before the show my wife and I were walking to Gordon Biersch brewery beforehand for dinner and drinks.  I looked about 10 feet ahead and it was Patrick and his parents walking and I called out to him and said hello and asked him if he knew if they were playing inside or outside(Lifestyles Pavilion, the stage can turn around for inclement weather and play inside.  He said outdoors he thought, but seemed bothered that the fans were going to get drenched.

By that time we had reached the restaurant and he held the door for his parents to go in and then motioned for my wife and I to go in as well and held the door for us too!

I told him I was really looking forward to the show and I loved their music and he thanked me and we went our seperate ways into the restaurant to eat.

Super nice guy...very polite and gracious.

Thanks everyone for the stories you've provided. Maybe I just caught them at a bad time. I know they were done with their soundcheck but maybe Jim and Carl were busy with something else and perhaps they genuinely didn't have time to stop over. I've made journeys from SC to NY to see them play, and too many too list 100+ mile trips, and they don't know that. They just see "some guy" asking for a picture. I could understand that. If they knew how big a fan I've been they might have acted differently, that's what I'm gathering from everyone elses encounters with them.

I did get to hang out with some of the roadies for Preservation Jazz Hall Band that day though. They were super gracious and invited me and my wife to a show next time we go to Louisiana. We've texted a few times since then but I haven't made it down yet.

Yeah it was the "main" outdoor stage, facing the beach. It was perfect weather too. And that was also the night I learned how boring and pretentious Patti Smith is.

I have met all the boys in the band. I was their Tour Dentist (TD) in 2010. Let's just say I made much bank selling the dregs of the spit cup to groupies. In fact, Ruckus gave me $75 and a Denny's coupon (free Maple Bacon Sundae with purchase of Triple Bacon Sampler) for an oz. of Bo spittle.

That is incredible!!  Does the Triple Bacon Sampler include Maple Bacon or do they actually have four kinds of bacon?

I met Jim for the first time at SXSW in 2008 right before EU came out.  The whole band was hanging out at the Wax Fang show.  I was nervous to say anything because there were some posts on here at the time that Jim had refused to take some pics. with people in Louisville.  I decided a pissed off picture of him was better than no picture.  He couldn't have been cooler.  He was actually really interested in my feedback on the show and new songs from the night before.  I was doing my best to not geek out so I was the one to kind of cut the conversation off.  Great pic too.

I met him with MoF last year and he was really nice as well.  He told me he loved my shirt, which made my day.

Met him in March at SXSW at the Preservation Premier.  He looked exhausted so I just shook his hand and said hi.

Met Patrick a few times and he's always been cool.

Portland was my big moment meeting the boys, too.  I'd met Jim at Newport Folk Fest, got great pics and he signed an Omnichord of mine.  In Portland, the morning after the State Theatre show, I went out for coffee while the wife slept.  At Starbucks, I caught Bo in line and struck up a conversation.  He was very nice, putting up with me for 10 minutes or so.  We walked out together to what turned out to be the same hotel.  I said "goodbye" and he told me to hang out in the lobby as they were heading out soon.  So I did, met the rest of the boys and got my poster signed.  I left Jim alone, 'cept for his sig, as he seemed not in the mood to talk to fans, but the rest of the boys were great.  I saw them off in their van to Levon's Ramble.  Too bad my wife slept through the entire thing.

Only Jim for me.  It was a day I won't forget though.  Bonnaroo '06.  I watched Andrew Bird play That Tent early on, and Jim and a couple of the guys were backstage.  After the show I ran into him as he headed over (solo) towards Which Stage.  I was walking stride for stride with him completely by accident and when I realized, I said hello, love your music, can't wait for the show tonight...he shook my hand, said me too, it's gonna be great...just small talk.  Later that day I watched him sing backup on a couple of songs with Bright Eyes, then got almost right on the rail for the epic midnight MMJ set at That Tent (which Andrew Bird also sat in on for a couple of songs.)  An AMAZING day of music with a nice rendezvous in between.  Haha.  I don't particularly get down on photos or autographs.  Just a brush with greatness is enough for me.  To each their own though...it's not a lot to ask for a photo, but I always worry I'm bothering them.

Raaaazzzzzorrrrr Sharp!

i met carl at cannery ballroom at a gillian welch/david rawlings show summer of '07. i was a bit embarrassed cuz i was wearing an mmj shirt (which i actually had bought at carl's second gig with the band). they'd just played lollapalooza with the kids orchestra, so i asked him about that. we talked about public transportation, favorite venues, curtis mayfield. he asked me which of mayfield's records i had and we ran down tracklists. we talked for like ten minutes. he was completely down-to-earth, cucumber-cool. since he was just hanging out at somebody else's show i think he was just pleased to shoot the shit. it was super-tricky to let on like i wasn't a superfan. i've relived the conversation in my head repeatedly and i've come up with a million other questions i should have asked. oh well, next time

Bonnaroo '08.  Watching Pearl Jam with my wife, and who is standing next to us ... fucking Patrick!!! He was with a couple friends. We told him how much they rocked the night before and that we were seeing them the next week at Radio City.  He seemed to genuinely appreciate our fanhood... great guy...great weekend!!!

I met Bo on the street. Actually we were crossing at an inter-section. And I met Jim, Carl and Pat outside the Billboard in Melbourne. They just kind of walked up to my sister and I cause we were the only ones waiting outside (NERDS!) at the time. They were all really nice.

It's definitely Tommy's.  Mine is much lower, hence the creepy grin.

I'm sure this exists somewhere out there, but I can't find it. Has anyone ever met the band? care to share stories/ pictures?

I met Jim at a solo show during his first solo tour ( Regions of Light..) in Boston. My wife and I were hanging out before the show and all the sudden a familar figure crossed the street to go to Starbucks- we tried not to freak out, and asked him for a pic- he was noticeably in a hurry- but gracious and funny none the less- ( told us he was on his way to get socks)

I met Jim at the Electric Forest show back in 2017. The performance was awesome, as usual, but you could kind of tell this was just another show for them. Jim really didn't seem to give a shit, which is understandable because Forest is more centralized around electronic music, and a lot of the people at the rail were sitting facing the opposite way waiting for the DJ set after theirs.

My friends ended up getting VIP wristbands from some guy they met outside of the festival. So, after their set, they ended up giving me one of the wristbands because they knew how big of a fan I was. So, with a head full of acid, I went on my jolly way backstage to try and meet them. Don't ask me how, but I managed to find their tour bus and asked their bodyguard if they were there. He said they were at artist pickup but told me I could wait there, so I did. As they were walking up to the bus, I called out to Jim, he paused as he was walking up the bus stairs, kind of gave a sigh and turned around toward me. I handed him one of my buddies band's CD's and said, "Here, I don't really have words. I just wanted you to have this." He asked if it was my music, and I replied with, "No, but I'm close with them. You were just a big inspiration for the music." He then asked my name, shook my hand, and said "Love ya, be safe."

I was stoked to meet him, but he did seem like he didn't want to interact with anyone and was just ready to leave. Also, again, I WAS ON ACID and he might've been able to tell. He did seem really calm and genuine, but he still did seem like he was tired and just ready to get out of there.
