Title: Gary Clark Jr.
Post by: columba78 on May 17, 2011, 02:50 PM
Just learned about him in an article of "Rolling Stone". A 27 year old blues guitarist who is really, really good. His Song "Bright Lights" sounds a bit like "The Black Keys"

It is worth checking him out:

I probably read the same article a month or so ago in that Rolling Stone that was like X# of things to look for in 2011. Saw him mentioned and made a note in my phone because it sounded worth listening to, but forget to give him a listen. Plus theres an ALady approval? I guess I'll have to make sure I listen soon!

He fucking rocks! He's a combo of alot of old school influences, R&B too. He's a devolved rough-around-the-edges player, which I love. Blues needs more artists such as Clark and Black Keys. I haven't felt this kind of blues buzz for one dude since Robert Cray and Stevie Ray resurrected the genre back in the '80s.

This kicks out the jams:

As expected, Gary was fuckin' awesome last night. Played for nearly two hours, mixin' up his Delta blues numbers with some Chuck Berry-style rock and some sweet, sweet soul. The guy is not going to be playing clubs for very long -- a definite star in the making. There was a serious buzz throughout the place, and it seemed like Gary and the band really appreciated all the support. It was the drummer's birthday and he seemed to be having a blast. I somehow ended up in the dressing room after the show and got a chance to give Gary and the band some props. And damn, Gary is one tall dude.

Here's a video from last night of the Gary Clark Trio (as I call them) jamming out Don't Owe You a Thing:

I just discovered him and i came here to start a thread up about him. I am going to see him in DC in december. Cant wait. Definitely a rising star for sure. I was just searching through itunes and his name is what got my attention first (I am a redskin football fan and Gary Clark played for the skins back when they were good in the 80s and 90s, i dont think its his son though) Read the reviews and previewed the first song then bought his EP.

Looking forward to hearing your review of the DC show.  Totally bummed that the NYC dates are sold out and so $$$$.  My bro is trekking up to the Cambridge, MA show on the 12th, and I am super jealous  :(

Anyone else catch his performance from the White House on PBS last night.  By plain luck I stumbled on it and the show was very good.  Above is the link to the clips, some of which didn't air on the original broadcast.  I also think I need to buy the Tedeschi Trucks album.

He's been all over the map in his live shows so I expect the album to be a similar grab bag of styles. He's just as comfortable hammering out nasty licks on "Catfish Blues" as he is singing falsetto on the borderline doo-wop "Please Come Home". The variety is actually what I'm most looking forward to about the album!

I'm actually trying to decide whether or not it's worth it to pre-order through Warner. I've had nothing but bad experiences pre-ordering with Warner in the past, buttttttttt for $30 you not only get the album, but recordings of two live shows -- which entices me greatly. Decisions, decisions...

Haven't seen him live yet but I plan to when he makes his return to Australia on our big day out festival next year. I'm liking the diversity I've heard, I just think a few people may be expecting something that isn't going to happen. Regardless I think it will be a very entertaining album. I definitely will preorder the album from his site for the shirt, live shows and he bonus tracks. I may pick up an2nd copy of the album from local store as well :)

I don't know who this gentleman is but daaaaang he is smokin' hot!  Not a big fan of hardcore blues but I am intrigued. (I swear I'm not usually this shallow) ;)

Title: Gary Clark Jr.

He's a monster on the guitar. The next time he passes your way, you must go see him. And he IS a very sexy man. Any man who can run his hands over a guitar like that has got to have some other skills!

Here's what I'm thinking while I listen to this:

I don't like song 1 either, song 2 is what I want from my Gary Clark, Jr., songs: Eeeeevul guitar solo.
Third song is a little less bluesy, but it's not terrible. It kind of reminds me of 1990's R&B.

Then there's yet another Bright Lights, Big City. It like this song, but it has certainly already been promoted on his EP. It's almost the only song you can find of his on youtube too.

Then there's something that sounds like Chuck Berry. It's not bad. After the Chuck Berryesque song, there's a pretty good rocker. I wish I knew what these songs were called.

Around 34:50, there is a great song. Fuzzy, dirty grooves. I think this one might be Numb. I like this one the best off this release.
Then there's a song that sounds like it could be from The Platters. Then there's some song where he's trying to get some woman in bed on a Sunday morning. Bleh.

At 48:08 the Gary I love returns. Lots of feedback and distortion. Why can't the entire album be like this? It almost sounds a little Middle Eastern influenced - definitely Hendrix influenced with a little Zep thrown in for good measure.  In fact, I think I've heard him play this in concert. And then he starts singing and the badass disappears somewhat. Oh good,  he shut up and it goes back to being all badass guitar work.

Last song (I think) has a nice fuzzy guitar intro...and then he pusses out. I wish he would be more consistently badass. I might buy the songs on this album that are good, but I seriously doubt I will purchase the entire thing. Gary, just because you can sing in a falsetto does not mean you should try to be Prince.

Oh wait! That's not the last song! This one sounds like old Mississippi swamp blues! This is a much better way to end this album. It sounds like Gary only has half a mouf full of teeth; this one sounds so authentic.

And thus concludes my live blog of listening to Blac & Blu - I might add that I don't care for his misspellings of both of these words.

As a whole I love it.  I like the inclusions of the older tunes minus bright lights.  I like an album that immediately is a good listen and my first time through it's solid.

more than influenced...he starts playing the riff to Hendrix's Third Stone from the Sun around the 48 min mark.

I dig the album. Of course, Id much rather it be a pure blues album, and When My Train Pulls In and Numb are easily my 2 favorite songs, but I think its a real solid album. Based on how eclectic of an album it is as well as the sound of it, it reminds me a lot of Cody Chesnutt's debut album.

Got an email from Warner Music saying my cd and t-shirt have shipped.  It said the first bootleg and the bonus tracks are going to be a digital download.  Didn't specify for the 2nd bootleg, but I assume it will also be digital.

Tempted to listen to the album on I-tunes, but I think I'll wait.

For those that have listened, does "Please Come Home" have the amazing guitar solo in the middle that he plays live?  If it doesn't, I want to get rid of my disappointment now.

Enjoyable album but the SUPER MODERN production leaves my ears a little fatigued. I like my music LOUD and I find it hard to get through the whole album in one sitting because of how maxed out the whole thing sounds.

Having said that, I think this is a good album. I still absolutely ADORE the wonderfully saccharine "Please Come Home", and I'm so glad he captured a great version in studio that matches the beauty of when he performed it live. Of course, it's hard not to love the hardcore fuzz blues tracks -- THAT is Gary Clark Jr. to me. It's clear ol' Gary has HUGE crossover potential with all the pop tracks on Blak and Blu , and I'm very curious to see what direction he goes from here. Blues hero or Lenny Kravitz 2.0?

I think the whole thing is pretty killer.  I think a lot of first reactions are "I wish the whole thing was like these one or two tracks" but I think the best thing about it is the diversity.  I think if all the tracks were similar is would get a little boring.  He keeps it interesting and I think live a lot of these tracks are going to sound very different.

I've seen him twice at festivals but really looking forward to seeing him do a headlining gig in a few weeks.

I'm glad there is at least a short solo on it, but it doesn't compare to the four minute live solo I saw at Newport.  Here is one that comes close, from the 2:00 to 5:15 mark.

Gary Clark Jr. - Please Come Home (Dave Matthews Band Caravan Chicago 2011) [Live] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ5koSEtN7s#ws)

Overall, I do like the album (even most of the R&B stuff) and I'm excited to see some of the songs in the live setting.

I didnt think any album could surpass Menomena's Moms this year, but I think Blak & Blu has..There really isnt a song I dont like on it, but I like a lot of music so I can see how some people wouldnt like it quite as much, especially if they were hoping for a blues/rock album. And while many of those songs are my favorites, I still love the hip hop influenced The Life, early RnR styled Travis County, and the R&B bonus track Soul nearly as much. The album flows great, it hits you in the face with a rocking song, then usually takes a step back with the next song, and then comes right back with another good rocker. Cant ask for anything more.

I just personally wish this song was on B&B, although it is on my version. I cut out You Saved Me (needed to for 80min cutoff), and threw in Dont Owe You as track 2 between Aint Messin' & Train Pulls In, have the 2 bonus songs (Breakdown & Soul) towards the end, then Nextdoor Neighbor Blues as the closer. IMO thats how the album shouldve been proper so maybe thats swaying me, but I love the album regardless

Agreed!  I'm glad I didn't pre-order the album.  If he wants to go the R&B route that is fine, but they need to stop billing him as the next gen blues guitar guy.  I'm still going to see him in Philly, but more so because a buddy of mine loves him and hasn't seen him yet.

I only listened through once but I thought it sounded like a solid album to me. Also the RnB influence was there on his last album so no surprises there. With that said he is much better live than on album, so definitely don't pass up any opportunity to see him live. The next generation blues player thing will make more sense after a live show.
