This show is a benefit for Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, a grassroots organization of which all three performers are members that fights the destructive act of Mountaintop Removal Mining and works on economic justice and voter empowerment issues in Kentucky. More info at http://www.kftc.org/ (http://www.kftc.org/)

All tickets are GA. The Brown seats 1400 and DMM/Ben filled it 3/4 last time they played even without Jim, so get tickets now!

Hope to see you there!

Hopefully will have the same vibes and definitely have some speakers lined up for this one. More info here:

I missed the App Vox tour, so what can I expect?  Sollee has actually become one of my favorite musicians this past year.  His live stuff is second to none IMo.  Don't know much about DMM guess I better pick up the Dear Companion LP.

Any good recordings from the previous tour?

Basically all three of them were on stage together switching off Their songs. A lot of dear companion songs, and many songs from their own solo work. More MMJ solo song than The other two. However all three artists have released albums since App Vox.

There were also authors and speakers, but they only alottes for maybe 10 minutes of the total time.

this was getting too close to falling off the first page.

i got 8 tickets, taking my family as a christmas gift.  found out today that i'm off work the day after the show.   makes it so much more enjoyable.

one nagging thought:

i've never been to a show that's general admission, but with seats.    what's the protocol?   is it acceptable to try to save seats for late arrivers?  and say we're in the 10th row or so......a couple of us get up to go pee or grab a beer.....what's stopping someone from swooping in and claiming squatter's rights, taking the temporarily abandoned seats?  will a simple "those are taken" suffice?  am i concerned over nothing?  the crowd will consist of only nice people, right?

We need to meet up for this earlier in the day.

I'm sure hoping it's going to be an only nice people crowd. So saving a seat or two for a friend would seem fine by me, but one dude showing up with a tarp and laying it over half a row wouldn't be, etc. I'd say basic rules of courtesy will apply, much like a movie theater but without the chance for true jerks, one would hope.

And I will say, based on what I know (I'm one of the Kentuckians for the Commonwealth organizers in NKY) the show is approaching a sellout. So for any of you on the fence about going, now would be the time to jump off that fence and join us.

Should be a great time. The fellas will be joined by Dan Dorff, a Cincinnati musician/drummer/all around sound maven who joined them for shows on the last tour. More discussion of the Lex show from our own archives here:

I do believe it will be all on stage at once, at least for most of the show. I'd expect it to be very much like the shows from the last tour, with of course some different tunes.

And yeah, as far as I know there's a couple of hundred tickets left, so it shouldn't sell out today or anything but in the next week I'd think it'll be at capacity.

I think I just bought tickets to this. The Kentucky Theater's online ticket service was down so I called the box office and they took my info, but their computer was down as well. So I seem to be going to this show. Now to find someone to go with me...

OK, I did just get tickets.

E-Wind or anyone else who lives in the Louisville area: can you tell me some good places to go in Louisville? Like a good breakfast place, or a good shopping district that isn't a mall. Somewhere that I can only go in your city?  In other words tell me what I can do on my trip besides the show.

Breakfast: Toast, Wild Eggs, Highland Morning, Meridian Cafe (A Daniel Martin Moore favorite!), and Baby D's Bagels. Louisville is weak on breakfast.

Lunch/Dinner: By the theater Safier's is delicious Mediterranean. On Market Street a ton of fun local shops and good food including Harvest, our farm to fork restaurant.  Mayan Cafe is also incredible. Try Please and Thank You for light lunch and Louisville Beer Store for some unique brews. Garage Bar has good artisan hams, pizza, etc.  Doc Crow's has BBQ, mac n cheese, fried pork rinds.

If you are vegan or vegetarian, head to Bardstown Rd and eat at Roots/Heart and Soy. You can also get great fusion tacos, flatbread pizzas, and unique vegan and vegetarian sushi at Dragon King's Daughter also on Bardstown Rd.

There's a great after party just down the street after the show at Land Of Tomorrow Gallery. $5 gets you free beer and wine.

Thanks to both you and Timescraper for the info! Nice to get some suggestions. I can't stay long, I've got to be back in Nashville to go to the Music City Bowl on Friday Night - hate football btw, going for the party. But, I want to do some fun stuff in Louisville while I'm there.

I hope to leave a little bit before noon so I should be there by 4!   Wooooooh!

Is the bridge on 64 still closed?   How bad will it be at 4pm on a Thursday?

Also, I'm thinking about trying to find a cheap room outside of town in Corydon.   How long will that take to get there with the bridge out at 1 am (ish)?

64 bridge is still closed but traffic shouldn't be too bad for ya, BH, since you'll be coming in instead of going out which is what most people will be doing at that time.

For shopping I'd definitely hit up the Bardstown Rd area.  For breakfast, everyone from out of town goes to Lynn's but I would recommend Wild Eggs.

I get off work early that day and will be downtown anyway, so I'll probably be down there well before the show, posted up at BBC.  I think everyone who said they were coming has my cell number.  But anyone is welcome to come down and hang.  I'll be the one in the BBC shirt on the other side on the bar with long hair and a beard, hanging with a guy who's old enough to be my dad in a crazy MMJ shirt (I don't really know what TEO's wearing, I'm just assuming).   ;)

I'm getting pumped!  :D

i wouldn't recommend Lynn's personally. its okay, but they're selling you a whacky atmosphere mainly. the food is average. If you don't have much time, I'd say the Highlands is where you should go for food/shopping. Its pretty close to downtown where the theater is, and it has tons of shops and restaurants, most of which are locally owned.  BBC is a good place to eat, imo, if you're gonna be there already. It has good food and great beer and is super close to the theater.

that being said, my group of people going has grown from 2 to at least 7, so I'm not sure if we'll make it to BBC or not. Since most of them aren't insane fans, I don't think I'll be able to convince anyone to get there early for prime spots, either. Maybe see you guys tomorrow!

my group has grown to a dozen or so.

two of us went to the BBC before the chris cornell show (also a thursday night), it was so crowded that we could hardly find a place to stand, let alone sit and eat.  current group plans are to hit some other place for pre-show food and drinks.....which makes me sad, 'cause i love the BBC.   but majority rules.

There will be very limited amounts of posters on sale at the show and even a more limited run of signed posters on sale. Signed posters will be $100.

These are frugal times, so I'll probably pass on a signed one. 100$ is kind of laughable, unless that money is also being donated. Wayne Coyne and Les Claypool had autographed posters at red rocks for 100 this year, which I also thought was a bit outrageous.

These are frugal times, so I'll probably pass on a signed one. 100$ is kind of laughable, unless that money is also being donated. Wayne Coyne and Les Claypool had autographed posters at red rocks for 100 this year, which I also thought was a bit outrageous.

Yeah dude I agree.  I had a hard time dropping $100 on a signed TOOL poster and those are some tough signatures to get.

don't get too exited about the sax, wasn't much but was cool to see him tootin' it.  Welcome home into interesting version of losin' yo head into bermuda highway was nice.

bummed Ben didn't play teach me as that song is awesome live and bummed the other musicians and Jim hardly collaborated at all, wasn't expecting that.

nice long set by all involved.  hope someone posts a setlist, I'm very curious to what song Jim played when he was making all them wierd noises and gestures.  I'm really thinking that is something of his but not sure.

Just wasn't expecting Jim's set to be 99 percent solo.  Seeing a Piano, Drums, Electric guitar, Cello and multiple Acoustics, I figured there would be more collaboration on Jim's stuff.  Nothin wrong with a Jim solo at all.  The show was great and more songs than I expected.

Love the 10 dollar poster,  thats gonna be a beut!
Loved the way Jim double looped his guitar from one song to the next, that was really cool.

i thought my oldest sister (62) was going to lose her mind during ben sollee's set.  she was absolutely floored by him....."paul simon with a cello."

dmm and yy were great too, but i also was hoping to see the three of them on stage together a bit more.  they played an amazing "where to begin" when they toured together a couple of years ago, i was really hoping for that.   all in all, a wonderful evening, sure hope that recording surfaces soon.

What a whirlwind!   Thanks Teo, Crazylove and Dylan for hanging with me!   Great to see Kory for a bit too!   Miss that guy.

Jim's set was really great.   The looping was a new surprise.   BH like.    Moving Away was a highlight for me.   The stripped down Losin' My Head was great too and opening with the first ever Welcome Home?  Well that was special.    I was suprised as well about less collaboration but it didn't really take away from the show at all.   Ben Sollee is so awesome.   Try and Only A Song sounded soooo good.    I thought for sure a couple of those covers were new Jim songs.   They sounded like something he would do!     Can't wait to hear a boot of this!

If only I would have had a knife and an ATM.......

FWIW, Streams just Want to be Heard is "Mute with a Bullhorn".

Also, did anyone else notice that Jim started to play "Bermuda Highway" a second time, caught himself right before he started and switched to a different song.
And of course the mirror being a portal to another dimension speech by Jim was pretty awesome.

Hi all, just got home from Louisville with a stop at the Music City Bowl in Nashville. It was a great show. I can't say much more about it than what you all have already said. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that he started playing Bermuda Highway for a second time and then caught himself. I was down front on the opposite side of the stage from him. I would have loved to see him in the middle of the stage. The endings where he did all of his oohs and aaaaahhhs were great. Really enjoyed his memory of the first time he came to this theater was in fifth grade for a Led Zeppelin laser show. Great show all around.

As am I. I had family stuff come up and was unable to make it. Still supremely bummed. Glad everyone had an awesome time and thanks to all of you and especially and obviously the artists for such a great benefit for Kentuckians for the Commonwealth. Hopefully those of you that are so inclined will go to kftc.org and sign up to become a member if you haven't already.

Thank you, Kory. Also, thanks for all that you've done maintaining the tapes over the years. I've been mighty grateful to you many times for old posts and other helpful links that you've provided.  :dankk2:

As I'm listening, I'm quite impressed with the sound. It sounds so much like it sounded that night. I think I might have to get an Iphone.

Thanks Fully! It's not too bad a recording if that's all we have.

I also have two HD videos outta my little canon g12 that may offer a bit better (or worse) sound, i'll let you guys be the judge... at least you guys can see Jim play the sax.

this link will show the  videos:

I wrote a real long reply earlier, but it failed due to some kind of error. Anyway, I'll make it short this time and write a longer introduction to myself later. I was the guy in the Roll Call shirt who recorded the KFTC show on my camera from the 8th row. I was able to get almost 72 minutes of the show recorded, however, I missed most of "It Beats 4 U" when changing out the camera's SD card. The audio is about the same quality as Kory's iPhone recording shared earlier (Thanks again Kory!) only missing the above mentioned song. I did get the whole group playing the 3 song encore. The only problem is that I have never put anything on the Internet before. I am not a user of Facebook or Myspace, and I have never uploaded anything to Youtube. I'm not really sure how to get you all the audio and video I have. Maybe somebody on the forum could give me some easy to follow instructions. If not, my brother may be able to help me when he comes in to visit later this month. Just know I am a big fan of MMJ and will be a respectful member of the forum.

Thanks,
Darkstarflashes
Just send me your camera and I'll take care of it!  ;)

We appreciate your willingness to share.  You could toss all the video/audio files onto a DVD as data and send it to one of us to post.  Not sure I'm the guy to send it to, though.  I don't do much video posting online.  Hope the see this sometime, though!

Yeah, actually did.  Not great video quality when moved to the "big" screen but a very enjoyable viewing experience.  I kinda gave up on uploading when I lost many gigs in the Megaupload fiasco.  I'll send you a copy.

With all that's going on right now, I have been very, very sad. I'm on vacation and am home with my family right now, so I have the emotional and spiritual support of my wife. However, the constant reminders of the trouble we are in here in America keeps pushing its way into my mind all the time. While watching Amy Goodman on Democracy Now! today, I noticed they played a little bit of an Abby Lincoln song while taking a break/transitioning to another story. Her singing style makes you feel and think at the same time. I then remembered when Jim had performed a cover of Abby Lincoln's song, "The World Is Falling Down" at the Benefit for Kentuckians For The Commonwealth show that I attended with my wife back on Dec. 29, 2011. I have Jim's whole set recorded and had split it up into a couple of individual songs. Those videos are "Unlisted", and I want to share this beautiful and haunting rendition of "The World Is Falling Down" with you all again. So, here you go. Let's let Jim help us all to feel. And I mean to really feel.

"There are some folks
I used to know
Who used to smile
And say hello,
And spin the world
And turn the page
Entertaining
From the stage
Father time
Forever true
Loves its own
And me and you
Disappear just like the sun, When the day is done.
The world is falling down, hold my hand
It's a lonely sound, hold my hand
We'll follow the breeze
And go like the wind
And look for a place
Where the willows bend
The world is falling down, Hold my hand, hold my hand, Hold my hand, hold my hand Summer's gone And winter's here
We had a lot of rain this year
The news is really very sad
The time is late,
The fruit is bad
The morning's come
And roosters crow
But people have no place to go
And disappear
Just like the sun
When the day is done
The world is falling down
Hold my hand
It's a lonely sound
Hold my hand
We'll follow the sun
And live for the day
And look for a place
Where the children play
The world is falling down
Hold my hand, Hold my hand
Hold my hand
Hold my hand"

10 years ago tonight, on December 29, 2011, I became a member of KFTC (Kentuckians For The Commonwealth) by way of Jim, Daniel, & Ben organizing this benefit show for KFTC's 30th Anniversary. They told us at the show that our ticket fees would be donated to KFTC and that if we wanted it to count toward a year's membership, it could. All we needed to do was sign up at the information desk in the lobby. I did and have been a paying member of this most important Activist group in the state of Kentucky ever since. I won't preach any more here at this time about KFTC and the need for genuine Activism, so I won't say any more ... right now. Hope anyone who has never seen or heard this show enjoys it (as well as those who have).

That might be the best video I've seen of Jim performing His Masters Voice, that must've been one hell of a show to be at.

Thanks! I was so amazed at this whole experience. It was only a year and 2 months into my being a fan of MMJ when I attended this show. It turned me on to Daniel Martin Moore, Joan Shelley, and Ben Sollee (and all the other local musicians that care so very much here in my state). A few years ago, I split up the 3 videos I posted above into individual songs and have them in the "Jim - My Videos" Playlist on my YouTube channel. Here's "His Masters Voice" isolated into a single video.

Wow. Thanks for a great reminder. This might have been the first time I saw YY solo. Might have been Actors Theatre. I thought DMM was also fantastic that night. Glad you bumped the thread. TY!
