I would seriously kill for the bear with the Z-bats poster. Didn't have the cash to get my hands on one when they were floating around eBay, and it looks like all hope may be lost for this one for some time now...

I've got that one too- the fiancee bought it for me... she's friggin great!

Their posters really are incredibly- like old rock posters.  Very artistic and beautiful.  I wish I had the funds to collect them- maybe I'll start designing em instead

QuoteAnother JJ #37 sighting....

Yeah I've tried to fine-tooth comb decipher whether it was a 37 or a quick-draw 34......but weeks go by like days and my mind is still much undecided.

The poster always reminds me of 'Into the Woods' with the men quartet singing at the end, cutting down the tree....

Maybe Jim was thinking the same thing as he signed it and that confused his mathematical skills

Actually that's how I received it straight from the band...but I cannot release as to how it was entirely possible (my ex-girlfriend played a HUGE role).

With the 37..
If you look closely, you can see how the top of the '7' is flipped up. I just think he got lazy when writing the '4' and it turned out to look like a '7'.

yes, it's from the L.A. Greek show.  Finding one on the gold paper like mine will be next to impossible, only 8 were made on the gold metallic paper.  The regular edition of 120 were made on a tannish paper and can often be found on ebay for around $100 , and there was also a black edition of 40 I believe, and a couple other rare variants as well.  If you decide you really want one check ebay or expressobeans.  Artist is Marq Spusta.

With regard to the Marq Spusta poster.  There are variants for sale at Off the Wall gallery.  I got my tan one from them.  There isn't any left of the tan variant left but they have the black, blue and yellow variants there but they do cost alot.  And that is with them having a sale on at the moment.  Their web address is below.

Bump.  How is this thread so old?  With a tour going on isn't there lots of fresh framing happening?  I am sitting on my San Dawg poster until after T5 and maybe get them all framed similarly.  The MMJ 2010 Series...  (Maybe I just answered my own question.)  But until then, here are some older things.

My husband and I have a rule that we try to limit the posters that we frame and hang to stuff we actually went to.  But this show never happened so ... Loophole!

And here's an MOF, just because I love the frame so much.

Man I always thought the band's autographs on a poster would be really cool. But the more I see sharpie ink all over the artwork the more I think it kind of ruins it.  Does anyone else feel this way or am I just jealous none of mine are autographed?

I agree Rusty, I've never been a fan of autographed posters, more often than not I feel like they detract from the art.

Thanks! Framed it myself and love the way it turned out. Some kind soul hooked me up the poster (thanks again).

hey dudes. whats the cheapest way to get frames. I have Louisville, Columbus, Nashville, Portland Maine, and App Voices posters and wanting to buy Chicago all from 2010 unframed right now.  I know its expensive no matter what but are certain stores or websites significantly cheaper? I want all plain black wood frames. I also want to frame my Forecastle poster because its a 30$ poster but its HUGE so I don't know if I will. I also want to frame my App Voices with the hand written set list from Jim with it but again I feel like that will make it extra big and extra expensive.

Well, I just went to Michaels- an arts and crafts store popular in New England- on my way home from the Portland show and scored 2- 11x17 frames and 8- 18x24 frames for about $100!  They had a sale where you buy one, you get the other for a penny.  These are black aluminum frames, no matte, with glass.  18x24 is the most common poster size, and the 11x17s worked for my signed Portland repro and a signed Evil Urges promo poster I have.  The bulk of my unframed posters are odd sized, so I've yet to get them done.  It seems each week, Michaels has some form or another of frames on sale.  Good luck!

just a word about Michael's...if you have anything of any monetary of sentimental value I would highly discourage anyone from taking their art to Michael's (or hobby lobby, etc.), unless you want some clueless person getting paid minimum wage, with no training whatsoever to handle your art.  Years ago I brought a print into a Michael's (Chico, CA) and they literally sliced the print in half, nearly the full length of the print, and on top of that they just framed it up in the hopes i would not notice, which if course I did.  If you're just buying some cheap frames, that's one thing, but I would never let them touch my prints at any time.  If you have the money, a local experienced framer cannot be beat.  If you're like most, including myself, a professional framer is usually out of the question.  I do all my own framing, have for years and it can be very rewarding.  I don't cut the mats or build the frames myself, I order online and put it all together myself, I did the Tenn. Fire frame job a few posts up myself...the whole thing cost me about $125, would have been easily 3 times that if I took it to my preferred framer in town.  If you want to go with a nice black wood frame, and a black mat (this is how I frame most things) you're usually looking at $80-$100 if your DIY.

See page 7 of this thread.  http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1271781101/91#91

if you have any questions feel free to ask, I've framed a TON of prints myself over the years.  Good luck!

I hear what you're saying, wf.  I went with basic frames and did the rest myself.  Of course, I love the look of a nice matte, and may invest in nicer frames down the line, but still felt $100 was a good price to pay to get 10 of my favorite posters behind glass and on the walls.  I appreciate the heads up, though, as the remainder of posters I have are odd-sized and may require some custom framing.  Do you have a preferred frame shop online to recommend?
Title: Re: Show your framed MMJ show posters

That is definitely a deal on frames that you got.

I typically use either americanframe.com or pictureframes.com.  Pictureframes.com will send you an entire sample set of their mats for free! Both allow you to upload your image to their site, and then you can play around with frames and mats and see what looks good.  Keep in mind with mat colors, they often look different on your monitor than they actually do, so matching perfect colors online can be difficult (which is when having the mat samples is great)...not an issue if you go with blacks and whites.  Check out page 7 of the posters from this tour thread, that I linked a couple posts back, I think on there I linked a great reference page on expressobeans.com that takes you step by step on how to do a DIY frame job.  It can be a bit intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy....and fun!

This is why we need a poster forum...

Everything fredo said above is poster gospel...I'd also add that if you take your poster somewhere to be framed, just say no if they offer to "drymount" it on a cardboard/foamcore backing.  Kills the value of the poster.

Archival materials, UV glass, etc. are also good ideas if you don't want the print to fade/discolor over time.

great point!  Don't ever drymount a poster.  Any reputable framer will know to NEVER drymount a print.  In fact, most will make you sign a waiver if you insist on having it done.

And I always use archival acid-free foam core and UV glass.  You'll thank yourself in 20 years.

Agreed. Have them done professionally. I had a Jerry Garcia poster that I bought at the show(1987) took care not to even crease or bend it and then took it to be framed. I did not know the first thing about framing. Went to pick it up and they drymounted it. Saw it on the bill and did not think much about it. That poster goes for about $550 now but cause mine is drymounted, maybe half that. The reason is it's not in it's original state anymore.

Do it right, like the man says you'll thank yourself down the road.  :)

Gorgeous WF!  Great job with the mat colors....Beautiful!

We got all 5 at T5, and have the Burwell NYE, as well as Fang/Vermont August 2010 and Philly 2010.  I can't decide if I want to put all 5 T5s on one wall....or put the 2 Burwells and 2 Fangs together......
I guess I need to get them in frames before I decide where they are going :)

Decisions, decisions.....

When I right-click the white box w/red X that I'm seeing, the properties suggest you got the wrong URL.  You need to click on the thumbnail on Flickr, then choose size of the image.  I recommend Medium to best fit the forum.  Right-click on the Medium image, choose Properties, then highlight the URL, which must end .jpg, right-click Copy, then Paste the URL between the "image" brackets on the forum posting page.  I hope this helps.  I usually have to wait until I get home to see most pictures posted on the forum, thanks to the blocking software my employer uses.  I always like to see nice framed posters!

I've debated matting posters with the ticket.  I recently got a ticket album from an ad in the back of Rolling Stone (always an interesting place to find weird products).  Not bad for $10 and I've already filled it.

Still, I do like the look.  Nice job!  Are the tickets in front of the matte, or are they framed by it?

Bold move using a white matte on that It Still Moves poster.  I dig it.  And it makes me wish, more than before (if that's possible) that I was at T5 #3. :'(

Here are the few I have framed.  Still waiting to frame a few new Burwells (Portland 04, 05, and 08).

A real treat, this newsprint edition of Burwell's NYE poster.

Thanks.  I'm pumped (but sorry, did not realize that pic was so crappy).   It is hard to find due to the low run and use of the image on the shirts.   what makes it a winner for me was that it passed the "ok to hang on the living room wall" wife test.

Too funny.  That's the problem I'm having with the T5 EU poster and the Essex Jct. Fung (Denise and Pooch do American Gothic).  My wife finds them too grim.  Maybe I'll bring 'em back to my classroom; the kids dig 'em.

1st: Autographed! (hung up at my house, was hung up at my lady friends for a long time)

2nd: (I know these aren't all jacket)

3rd: Autographed by Yim, Cabin, The Watson Twins

4th:

5th: autographed!

Other Not Jacket:
Black Keys NYE Stint (missed out on the other two)

Dr. Dog - Nashville a couple weeks ago. There used to be the Nashville MMJ poster from 2010 in here, which is why the back mat doesn't match right now. I just wanted to keep it fresh.

Oh here are all mine that I have framed, in order of how much I like them.

EDIT:

I don't know why these won't show up. http://www.flickr.com/photos/59643770@N03/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59643770@N03/)
I do.  You're copying the URL of the photo right after you choose it from your photostream.  You first need to go to Actions and choose View All Sizes.  Choose Medium 500, then right-click properties... etc.

Dr. Dog - Nashville a couple weeks ago. There used to be the Nashville MMJ poster from 2010 in here, which is why the back mat doesn't match right now. I just wanted to keep it fresh.

I have about 3 more jacket posters and a burwell Perince Bros that will probably never make it out of the closet, I just like to but posters any show I go to as of late.

So I finally convinced my girlfriend to let me turn our second bedroom/laundry room into a MMJ Man Cave.  She is not fully on board yet, but I have begun to put up my posters, which have been resting against the wall for some time now.

The pics aren't great, but I figured I'd share anyway

Nights 1, 4, 3 from T5
(http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae309/hgreenburg/mmj/poster5.jpg)

Nights 5 and 2 from T5
(http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae309/hgreenburg/mmj/poster4.jpg)

Burwell's T-5 and Burwell's 1st Edition RCMH

Wall of Burwell...its hard to see the NYE poster over there on the right

so here is a close up
(http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae309/hgreenburg/mmj/poster1.jpg)
sadly, its the only one show's poster which does not have the ticket below it (it was NYE, and I complete just misplaced somewhere after the concert)

Me, right after I got the poster on NYE....one of the happier moments for me at a MMJ concert (after waiting in line in the freezing cold for a few hours)

Nice, Haldon!  Very cool.  My wife decided that owls are the theme of our new nursery.  Not real looking owls, kind of cartoonish owls.  She is going to let me put the MMJ owl in there too.  Haven't decided exactly what I want to do yet.

I looked through all the pages of posters on this thread, beautiful work here! I agree that the band's signatures on posters detracts/distracts from the artwork.
I Just dropped $380 on getting my MMJ posters framed. I got museum glass in that has hardly any glare. I procrastinated on the framing a bit and wanted to get it done, the Cleveland poster was starting to accumulate some small dents on the edges. Both posters are from shows I attended, bought the Pittsburgh one at the show and got the Cleveland one from ebay a year or two later. I contemplated getting the tickets framed with the posters but kinda forgot about that idea.

Dude, Haldon.... All of T5, RC, and NYE burwells. Amazing.

I just purchased the red "artist addition" of the NYE Burwell for my lady for her birthday. It really is hard as fuck to give that away. I think I may try to buy it back from here after she's had for awhile  ;D . She isn't a big poster collector but that was her first MMJ show and her favorite and she at least pretends to like my Burwell posters so hopefully she'll be into it!

So, I forgot to take pictures of, and include these, in my last post

This one is from their Miami Beach show in 2008 (the only time I've actually seen them locally)  This one is in the bedroom

These next two pics below are my favs.  These are the limited edition Burwell wooden screen prints that were displayed in a gallery in Oregon (I believe)  He only made 26 sets of them.

The guys are in my dining room

this is on my nightstand next to the bed
(http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae309/hgreenburg/mmj/thebigbear.jpg)

Each one of the wooden screen prints is signed/numbered, and the back has a title for the peice....its pretty cool

I first saw them when someone from the boards (can't remember who) mentioned that the pieces were being displayed at a gallery and that there were a limited number which were being sold.
So I went online to the gallery's website and ordered a set.
Soon after they arrived at my doorstep with a handwritten note from someone at the gallery.

its def my favorite piece of MMJ memorabilia

I have a set as well, proudly chilling on my bookshelves in my living room.  Guy was part of an art show in Portland, and these were in the art show.  I cannot recall the name of the gallery that they were sold through, but you could buy singles or the entire set.  I initially was going to buy just Jim, but thought he'd be awful lonely, so I bought the entire set.  They're great...I love them!

Anyone have thoughts on having your concert posters physically touch the glass or Plexiglass of your frame? I'm having a dilemma. I know I am not going to use a mat. I could go with a decent & very affordable frame from Target, go with a custom frame from Americanframe.com (using acid free materials), or pay the big bucks and go to a frame shop. The first two options would end up with the poster being pressed up against the Plexiglass. Has anyone seen their posters get stuck to the glass or ruined by not using an acid free backing board? Thanks.

JDUB, I gave you my opinion in the cheap poster frame thread.  Quick answer here: you do not want your posters against glass or plexiglass...

I was taking stock of my framed MMJ collection, as I have some that need frames and a new classroom to decorate.  While I was at it, I snapped a few pics.

Framed album-related promo posters, signed CD inserts, album covers, and Roll Call stuff.

Nice.  That's what my dream MMJ Listening Room will need - lots of wall space.

Regarding the EU promo, I just checked.  The other side is portrait, but really boring.

I get what your saying and plan to hang them together, along with a couple of early promo posters from the Tenn. Fire and At Dawn eras.

Great thread all, glad to see it still going,  Would like to get some of the T5 posters framed, I have a bunch more now that would be too much to get them all framed at once.  When i finally do get them framed i will post pictures here.  Would like to get my Jason Brammer framed by him which looks nice.  If i can get the others framed, do you feel as though the ticket on the botton inside the matte takes away for the art or is it just preference as to the individual who owes them?  Thanks ahead for your thoughts?

Also any thoughts as to how to go about getting the process prints for the Terminal 5 At Dawn Burwell framed?  I was thinking of mating them all but dont know if that would look good?  The colors in order goes as

1st Gold
2nd Red
3rd Brown
4th Grey
5th Black

I would like to hang them up like the 5 dots on a dice, with the middle one being the final.

         -----      -----

               -----

         -----     -----

I will try to attach a picture but first time doing so i hope it works out.

file:///Users/jgc912/Pictures/GUYBUR-MMJ-Process%20Prints%20for%20T5.jpg

Unable to get this picture to show up here, any help would be appreciated greatly.  New like i said at uploading pictures into the forum.

The only cheap frame is the Roll Call poster. I got it from Target for $16.99. The big one is an odd size that needed a custom frame. And with all the talk about cheap poster frames (whether you should or shouldn't) I couldn't resist and paid the same framer to do the other two show posters. Here's a link to the Target frame. Sold out online but I found it in a store:

I paid about $140 each. That's with a coupon for 20% off my order. I went to The Great Frame Up. Apparently it's a chain, but it's not like Hobby Lobby or Michaels. http://www.thegreatframeup.com/ (http://www.thegreatframeup.com/)
It's a very basic black frame. UV protective glass and spacers to keep the print from touching the glass.

hey dudes. whats the cheapest way to get frames.

The cheapest way, and the only way we've stayed in the game as long as we have is to hit every thrift store/consignment store and buy anything that will fit and has the glass intact. Then just take it home, throw some black spray paint on it and you're ready to go. I can say this easily, because my wife used to frame back in college and it's been a great way for us to frame a picture for less than $30 depending on the frame cost.

Too funny.  That's the problem I'm having with the T5 EU poster and the Essex Jct. Fung (Denise and Pooch do American Gothic).  My wife finds them too grim.  Maybe I'll bring 'em back to my classroom; the kids dig 'em.

Too funny, my girlfriend has vetoed the T5 EU poster as well.  She likes the 08 BoA one and the latest Burwell so that's good.

These aren't mine.  Seth (scosby2) asked me to post them, as he can't seem to figure out how to post pics on the forum.  He said he found a great framer and they look great.  Birmingham is a bit too far away for me, though.  Anyone know any good framers in the Concord, NH area?

ewwww nice...that's the only one i want and don't have..

You and me both!!  Johnny i know that those aren't your posters framed but it seems like i am having the same problem with getting pictures uploaded onto the forum.   I know you had a post set up somewhere on how to do it but i don't know where that is and what to post a picture.  If you have the time to send me that thread or send me a p.m on "how to do" that would be much appreciated.  Thanks

it's all about the DIY Johnny, you could easily frame something like these up yourself for a fraction of the cost a framer would charge.  Look earlier in this thread, I talked about it quite a bit.  I frame all my own stuff.

Thanks for the link Johnny but i have been trying this for about an hour and a half and no luck yet.  All that comes up is the small blue box with the question mark to open the image through flickr only.  Not sure what to do as i have tried many things and followed the steps correctly for each one but not luck for me.   >:(   :(

Every image you post here has to have a url.

For your own pictures, you need to put 'em on an image hosting site like Flikr first.

Right click over the image and click on "Properities."

Click and drag over the url, then right click over the highlighted area and choose copy.

Thanks for posting the pics John, I happen to know a guy who knows a guy who owns a custom frame shop. Got them framed up for really cheap. He did the mattes and everything. I just told him to make em look fancy. And yes John, you are my photo bitch. Waiting on my T5/At Dawn Burwell to get here and then I am gonna do the same to it. Hope everyone is doing well.

So, I have support from my extended family to look into what I might need to frame my Burwells and they'll use Christmas to help with supplies.  I envision having all of them in similar frames (24 x 30 to accomodate 3 inch matting all around) and UV glass.

Its frustrating that Guy makes most  of his prints just under the standard 18 x 24 size.  His LA Pantages print is 16 7/8 x 23 7/16.  His 2011 Red Rocks is 17 5/16 x 23 1/2.  His 2008 Bonnaroo is 17 5/8 x 23 7/8.  I think his 2008 MSG NYE (I have the newsprint version - thanks Kyle!) is the only Burwell that fits a standard 18 x 24 frame.

Walter et al - can you point me in the direction of frame, matte, glass, and foam board suppliers you use?  I'm looking at 9 MMJ Burwells and maybe the newsprint one, as well (not sure how that will look matted without backing it with adhesive or some such to minimize the wrinkles; currently, its unmatted and touching non-UV glass).

Any help appreciated.  Too much information online, some of it clearly bad.

My mom manages a local frame store. I'll ask her for some tips.

I worked at one on and off through high school, so I picked up a few things.

Newsprint is basically the 2nd cheapest type of paper out there (behind wrapping paper) and will yellow no matter what you do to it. Make sure ALL of your supplies are acid free, and glass should absolutely be UV, if not "Museum". Whether or not you ever plane to resell any of your prints will also make a difference on how you frame them. It is cheaper to have them dry mounted to foamboard, but that makes them practically unsellable.

Speaking of framed MMJ prints has anyone used americanframe.com?  If so any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.  Even if I don't buy from them the site can upload pics and its kind of cool trying out different frames and mat combinations with posters I want to get framed.

Walterfredo would be the one to give you good advice as far as framing goes but i believe that they do all their framing themself.  I believe they may have commented earlier in the thread though if you want to check that.

I remember Walterfredo saying that the colors on the screen differ from the samples that are sent to you from them.  So keep that in mind when making a selection, not too sure how they differ, if they are brighter or less bright i don't know but i am sure walterfredo would be able to advise you better then I.  Let me know how it comes out though.
Title: Re: Show your framed MMJ show posters
Post by: walterfredo on Nov 18, 2011, 01:02 PM
alright, here's my advice on DIY Framing...

*as sweet nothing mentioned, I have found from my personal experience that the color you see on your monitor doesn't always look like that when the mats arrive.  A monitor doesn't really show 'true' colors.  I've been burned by this a couple of times, and the mat just didn't look right.  For this reason I tend to do a lot of framing with blacks and whites, which I feel are timeless anyhow, and always look good.

*pictureframes.com will send you (or at least used to) a free package of all their mat samples, then it's much easier picking the one that actually matches the art.  All of my DIY framing that I went with colored mats, I've bought through pictureframes.com.  Otherwise, I use americanframe.com because I've found it to be a bit cheaper.

*very important!  If you're using americanframe.com, make sure to enter your art size to be exactly what you want showing through the mat, meaning, slightly smaller than the actual poster size, because you need to take into account overlap of the mat on the poster.  If you enter the exact dimensions of the poster, then the opening of the mat will be that exact size, and then you have a problem.  The more overlap the better, so when you're framing something that has a large white border space around the poster, bring the mat dimensions in quite a bit, and this will make it easier to frame.  If there is very little/no border on the poster, it can be difficult to frame.  I try to shoot for at least a 1/4 inch overlap all the way around, in which case you would enter the art size to be 1/2 in smaller in all dimensions than the paper size (1/4" + 1/4"=1/2").  But if you can bring it in more, do it.   But, if you're using pictureframes.com, their system automatically makes adjustment for this (which I find annoying), if you enter your art size it will compensate for a little overlap of the mat, but only a very, very small amount (I think 1/8" or a 1/4" total).  So, I've found that I have to play with the dimensions a bit to get the dimensions that I'm really wanting.  Just make sure that the mat opening of the under mat is at the dimensions you're after.  This probably sounds really confusing, but once you start playing around you'll see what I'm talking about.  Also, I haven't ordered from either site in over a year, so things might possibly have changed, just keep it in mind though.

*If you opt for no mat at all, make sure to use spacers when you frame it up, these keep the poster from being in contact with the glass.  If the poster is in contact with the glass, over time moisture can get into the frame, and then the poster will adhere to the glass, and be ruined....I learned this the hard way years ago.

RIP jerry on broadway poster...

*make sure to look at the dimensions of the frame moulding before you buy, it can sometimes be deceptive when you're looking online.  You don't want a frame that has 3" wide moulding (or perhaps you do?).  Just be aware of it.  I've been burned by this as well.

*I use mylar corners to mount the poster to the mounting board/foam core.

http://www.dickblick.com/products/lineco-archival-mounting-corners/?wmcp=google&wmcid=products&wmckw=17306-4050 (http://www.dickblick.com/products/lineco-archival-mounting-corners/?wmcp=google&wmcid=products&wmckw=17306-4050)

I recommend the clear 1/2" ones.  This is a safe/archival method of mounting the art to the backing board.   If your poster has very small amount of border, and your mat overlay is very small, the corners will sometimes show a bit in the corners of the frame, I usually get a razor blade and just cut them back a little so they don't show.
I would also recommend trying to use archival framing materials (acid free, etc.) and UV glass/plexi.  This can bring the price up, but if it's something that you think will or does have monetary value, you'll be glad you did in the long run.

There's my framing blog!  If you have any other questions let me know.

The photos available online are small.  I made mine from a photo I took of the poster using my digital camera, so the resolution is higher.

I got it in the mail just an hour ago.  Its cool, a bit darker than the set up tool shows, and is a minimal case.  I'll probably use my Otter Box case most of the time, as its more protective.  I will have this with me at MSG, however.

Be aware, the image you choose will continue on the sides of the case, so note that another half inch of the image wraps around and isn't visible using the set up tool.  You can see what I mean from this photo.  The case comes with a screen protector, which I already have, and the black silicone bumper.  The hard case covers the back 'cept the camera lens.

Thanks John, you answered all my questions before I could ask 'em. I was even gonna ask you to post a picture when you got it. I didn't know it came with a rubber skin and a screen protector too. I'm definitely sold on it. I'm thinking about using the Red Rocks burwell (sorry for crampin your style!) but Im not thrilled about the brown color scheme with a black phone. I might use my iSplash program to make it black and white though. Who knows. I wanna use something jacket related for sure though.

Anyone who has any suggestions/ideas as to what poster (or picture or anything) to use, I'm all ears.

I've also though about using the Clinch lithograph included with circuital box set.  Hmmmmmmmmm.

For te holidays, I think I'm gonna get my mom one with the circuital "eye" on it cause she love that record so much!

I'm not sure if Ive posted any of these before, and I can't figure out the right formatting for most- but here mine is! The alpharetta one has one of Carl's picks that I picked up off the ground inlaid into the matting

Wow the Alpharetta one looks awesome. I'm definitely gonna use thatPick idea for the picks I have from St Louis. Though I may use them with a different poster cause I don't particularly like the St Louis poster.

I was happy with that one! I don't know if your local framing store will do this, but mine put the pick in for free too

My my my...

ok...

so i e-mailed brammer around november and just asked him if he happened to have a t5 poster just laying around somewhere that didn't get sold and of course he didn't but he did say he was doing a special run of his Chicago show print (rufus firefly started a post about it) and offered to sale me that poster. of course i agreed and he mentioned the fact he may be doing some custom frames and for me to just keep that in mind. well i thought about it and e-mailed him and told him i would definitely like the custom frame, museum glass, and just to deck it out. he then e-mailed me back and told me that since i had just basically told him to make it look like whatever he wanted that for a little bit more he would make it very unique and all this stuff so i told him that since i never do anything like this and had been saving my money that i'm sure when he designed the poster he had a frame in mind so i just told him to make whatever he envisioned it to be. And boy am I happy with it. Those are real leather straps on the corners and he crushed red velvet into the top to match the curtain.  my favorite part is the peacock pendant. and the fact he signed it to me. after 3 and a half months and abot 30 emails later here it is...

Great job on that frame job by Brammer!!!  It looks very similar to his style in his non poster works so it is just amazing!!  I purchased the Z frame from him a month or so before he sent out the email that had options for getting frames with museum glass and matte etc. so I wish i almost waited a month more or two to get one like this but for the Z poster.  The poster frame i got is great as it is but this just blows it away, any chance you could let us know what the cost of this frame job was?  Again super nice frame job and i love what he did with the matte in this frame, everything goes so well together.  Anybody happen to get a Z poster frame job that is of the upgraded variety, if so please post some pictures?

Wow. I am impressed with the beautiful and creative framing in this thread.

I've used the same sturdy black frame with double mat scheme for all of my show posters, so I can mix and match. I like to change them up between home and the office.  All were done by Hobby Lobby. Sorry my iPhone photography is not the best. Here are some of them:

MMJ Detroit 10/04/08; my favorite of all of my framed posters.

MMJ at Bonnaroo 06/10/11. I love the colors!

Roll Call. This one is right inside my office door and gets a zillion compliments.

I also have MMJ Columbus Ohio 2010 and the signed Schuba's Obama fundraiser (which was cancelled after Jim's terrible fall). I'll try to get those posted soon.

Thanks Penny & Mahg33ta.

Here are a couple more:

Columbus OH, 05/02/10. This was my son's first concert ever (at age 9).

Signed Schuba's poster for Yim Yames' Obama fundraiser (this show did not take place because of Jim's stage fall earlier that week).

Signature detail.

My husband dislikes Obama (Obama isn't liberal enough for him  ::)) so he sometimes takes this one down. I always find it and rehang it someplace else, without mentioning it. It's been in the home office, it's been above the piano, it's now in the upstairs hall. The conversation usually goes like this ... him: But I hate Obama. Me: I know you do, but it's Jim James signature!

Thank you! It's not their most creative show poster by a long shot, but I wanted to do something nice with it to commemorate "the baby's" first concert. ;) He was just asking me last night when he can see MMJ again. Forecastle will be his first festival.

Both of my kids consider Z the best album ever. Hard to argue against that.

I recently moved and now have some wood paneling at home (gun to head emoticon here). I tried hanging my posters with command strips. While I was out of town last week three of my posters fell. I'm now down 2 shitty frames, one incredibly nice frame, and my absolute favorite poster has scratches in it.

Not happy over here. anyone else have wood paneling? Should I just take the plunge and put holes in the wall?

Yes. Take the plunge, and don't worry about the holes. It's nothing a little wood putty  won't fix when you move. ;)

I love mine too. I bought it and was walking out of Stubb's to put it in my car and I heard a guy say to his friend "that idiot just spent 30 bucks on a fucking poster." still pisses me off.

A year after the show I got it signed at ACL by all the MoF. Jim and Conor hadn't ever seen it and remarked about how cool it was.

Beautiful!  I've been hoping to get some Burwells framed, too.

He tends to run just under the "standard" 18 x 24 (17.5 x 23.5, I believe).  What were your matte dimensions and were you able to, then, use a "standard" frame?  I'm thinking 3 inch matting around, which would require a 24 x 30 frame.

Thanks guys. I got really lucky with that last one. I had the first two framed in identical frames, but when I got at dawn framed the frame was discontinued. Luckily my mom tracked down just enough of it to make the frame you see there.

I've got a few more that haven't been framed (Philly '08, Philly '10, all of the T5 ones, Louisville '08) so we'll see what's next.

Love it Angelo!  I used the same colors when I had mine framed.  (i'm actually pretty lousy at picking out the rights matching colors but mrs. hh went with me and she picked out those same colors).   I have many mmj posters framed but the Burwells are usually my favorites.  This one included.

Thanks headhunter, glad you like it! You know it's funny, I'm terrible with this stuff too so my gf went with me to figure out color combos. Without her it would just behind glass without a matte. I was completely ignorant about this stuff until I met her. I have a Wilco poster from their show in Scranton, PA and when I bought it I simply bought a frame and stuck it in there. Now it's got this awesome double matte thing going on and the poster looks so much better.

The Burwell looks awesome!  I think the double matte pulls the whole thing together nicely.  The silver especially really makes it work for me.  Nicely done

That is amazing. That's my favorite MMJ poster of all time. All the variants.

I moved a couple days ago and I have one more large wall left open - perfect for the PCx3

That Z poster is super cool.   It even says "To Kyle and Amy" on the bottom.   That's me and my wife's name.   That was her first ever show.   How special it would be if I could get that poster.... almost looks like it was customized just for me.

I'm coming for it!!!

The artist accidently shipped Jimbuktu's poster to me and mine to him.    A bit of a bummer but neither of us cared enough for the bother and cost of repacking and shipping.   We just agreed we'd cross paths at some future MMJ point and trade.   Then a couple years went by.   Turns out Jimbuktu lives in Port Chester, so how nice of MMJ to schedule a show in his hometown!!

These are the posters that found their way onto my wall after I moved.  My favorite posters that are from shows I've attended.

PCx3. The orange one is a number 1. All have gold mats and brown mats.

Yum center, autographed by the band. Numbered as "special edition 11/22". Courtesy of the artist and JY for my gf who basically traded it to me. Ha"

And finally RRx2. My favorite frame job of them all.

Thanks to the fabulous JohnnYYac, I finally got this done:

...aaaaand I am now reminding myself not to trust product IDs at framing websites, and will check the description of any frames that I re-order. Granted, it was 6 months between orders, but should you really be using the EXACT SAME ID value for very different products, American Frame? No, you should not.

So, this is how they are displayed until I get both posters into the same frame:

Nice job Crispy.   I like the look of the opposite color mattes for those two. Nice job Crispy.   I like the look of the opposite color mattes for those two. Really works well with the mirror image theme of the prints.  I never thought of that, but since they're both the same size, I might just F around with them every once in a while, and switch them up.

Thats a pretty sweet setup you got there Crispy, always love what Burwell does in his posters.

Finally got some photos of this stuff. The Circuital signed LP is just a placeholder for right now. I had the 2nd disc for Z in that spot but the frame fell off and shattered so I need to get a new, matching one. For now the Circuital holds it's spot. May move the Circuital down to the center/bottom after replacing the Z frame.

That's actually one of the few posters I have procured myself rather that through the generous help of wonderful forum peeps.

And the twin Burwells are now in the same style frame and look great.

Curious as to what the measurement is of what's showing on the inner blue matte?  I've kept my 2nd mattes exposed at 1/4 inch on the Burwell's, and 3/8 on the others.  It looks like the blue on yours is similar to the 3/8 but is it more? I like it, and might go bigger on some of mine if that is indeed more than 3/8.

It's actually a full 1/2 in., which I think works well with the larger white border area, the overall size, and it echoes the 1/2 in. black patterned border in the design. Otherwise I think 3/8 would be better with anything this size or smaller.

Yeah, I think you're right. I went 1/4" on my Burwell's because I didn't want to draw away from the print, but now seeing how great the 1/2" works on your poster, I think I'm going to recut my outer mattes back to have a 3/8" reveal on those.

I like the way the blue echoes the 1/2" black on your poster too,  and I have a couple with a similar border. Definitely going to open those up to reveal a 1/2" inner matte. Thanks for the tips, and hope you don't mind me copying some of your ideas.

You bet! Are you talking about the same LA and NYC Burwells from 2011? I would think a pretty thin border like 1/4" would go better with the lines of that design. I went with none, but now I think an inner mat would be good on them too.

I have six Burwell's that I'm doing. The two you mentioned, T5, Pantages, Red Rocks 11, and Boston 11. I kept a 1/4" reveal on the inner mattes on all of them, and like the look but I'm going to cut the outer matte on the Pantages one back to reveal 3/8" and see if I like that better. That was the cheapest outer matte of all of them so if I like the original 1/4" better, it won't set me back too much to go back to it,and get another.

The other posters I'm doing have a 3/8" reveal, and look pretty good. I was leery of going wider on those, but a couple have a similar inner 1/2" border as your RR. I like that balance on yours, and am going to cut one back to 1/2" for now, and see if it looks as good as yours. I think it will because when I'm looking at it the way it is now, something just looks a little off, and now I know what.

I'll post some pics when they're all done. I'm doing 11 posters for now, the six Burwell's, the rest of the T5's, and the Sandy Benefit poster from Asbury. Two more to go, and by the time I'm home they should all have Masterpiece glass in the frames. That's the last step.

Well I cut those outer mattes back, and am really pleased.  The one with a 1/2" inner reveal now looks perfectly balanced, and just that extra 1/8" seems to have added more depth to the look as well.

The Pantages looks much better with a 3/8" inner reveal, as opposed to the 1/4". It doesn't take away from the print at all, as I had originally thought it might. Definitely adds a nice accent, and I'll be doing the same to  the other Burwell's as well.

Fully, I lucked out on that Slater print big time!  It showed up on eBay for under $300 framed!  I just happened to be the only one paying attention at the time.

Eric, my girls aren't impressed with the posters.  Michele isn't a fan of Burwell, except for the facing spacemen, and prefers the Wiltern 3-some to the Port Chester trio, which I prefer.  For our most public room, I'll let her choose.  I'm thankful she's willing to let MMJ posters be the centerpiece of the place.  There are still a bunch I haven't unpacked and so many more in portfolios.

Looks like I'll be adding a One Big Holiday print to the collection, thanks to a pair of assholes south of the border!

Beautiful, Eric.

Y'know,  I haven't had ANY of my posters framed with mattes.  I have over 150 MMJ posters, but I just can't justify spending more than I did on the poster for a custom frame job.  I know all of the arguments for doing so, one of which is looking at the beauty above, but I just can't do it.  I've settled down on my poster purchasing these days, and wish I had the money for framing a few of my favorites.  Oh well...

Thanks John. I hear you about the cost and I've just been taking my time with them. I've only got about 11-12 of my 50+ MMJ  posters framed. Not sure how many more I'm gonna do until I get more wall space.   I'd love to do another dozen or so but that's going to be awhile. I've been joking with friends that I need a bigger house. Not just for some more room for future grand kids but so I can hang more posters!

I've kept it to my Burwells, the T5's, and a couple of other favorites like the St. Augustine one. I haven't done the Chicago ones yet though. Still not sure how I want to do those.

I'll post a couple more when this thread needs bumping.

Thanks for the compliment! Honestly, I usually base the outer mat on what mats the frame shop has that are a reasonably close match. I also tend to pick darker colors, but they didn't have anything that was a close match to the magenta on the poster... so I took a shot with the light grey. I was surprised at how nice it looked. I may also start shifting more of them to a lighter-colored outer mat based on how this one turned out.

My framer gave me a nice pointer a while back about taking pics of my framed posters before I hang them.  He said to remove the glass before taking the pic so there's no glare or reflections. I've had some glare even with Masterpiece/Museum glass but his advice has worked every time.

Just picked these beauties up from the frame shop yesterday. Played a very dangerous/expensive game. After scoring a foil on the first night, I decided if there were any foils left, I get one. Ended up completing the set, and they are beautiful!

Forgive me butting in, but you really should get those posters out of the tubes and into a portfolio or flat file.  Atoya 18 x 24 portfolios from Amazon work for most posters.

I love those portfolio things. I need a new one soon.

My problem is what to do with all the random 19" x 25" or other larger sized posters that I take off my walls. I've got a handful that just don't fit in the 18x24 portfolio

Yeah, I sucked it up and bought a GIANT portfolio for the oversize prints.  I believe it was a 24 x 36 presentation case from here:

I got 2 refill packs for a total of $267.  Looks like its out of stock now.

If you're serious about keeping prints nice, and you have way too many like some of us, keep an eye on your local Craigslist for someone selling a flat file.  I checked my local c-lists religiously for a couple of years before I got lucky.  Flat files can be stupid expensive, but you can lucky with someone selling one on the cheap.  I think I paid $75 for one that would retail close to $1K.

I bought a matte cutter and started doing my own framing with cheap frames at Michaels.  This ended up running me about $50/poster and was pretty fun.  Here's my Tennessee Theater print + Widespread Panic - St. Augustine 2014 Fall and Phish NYE 2014/5 Miami

I've still got my 3 from Chicago Theater that I don't know what to do with.  Framing store quoted me at like $650 and that's if we don't get creative with it.  Anyone frame that set yet?

I would suggest looking at Framebridge for better pricing than that. Limited mat color options but great quality work and lower prices than a framing shop.

Can't wait to get those two from Iroquois framed and up on the wall. already have the spot picked out.

We have a guy we like to use bc he always ends up at the same shows we go to. I'm sure we could find someone cheaper but he does a great job and he's a cool guy so we like to go back to him. He usually buys 2-3 posters at the shows he goes to and has the extras to sell.

Yeah, I'm sure there are cheaper options out there.  But since it's 3 prints that run together, I'd like to have them in the same frame and probably, subsequently, a very customized matte.  It's honestly a job for a proffessional for the 3 Guy Burwell Chicago prints.  I'm also unsure if i would want to put a thin piece of matte in between each poster or just try to put them all together.  Also probably wouldn't be a bad option to just frame them on top of the matte as you may have saw I did with the Phish print.  UGHHH, decisions decision........

Yeah those Chicago Burwell's are giving me a tough time too. On one hand they seem like they'd be best suited in one frame but the three different colors make it rough selecting a matte color. I was thinking of just going with a basic black/white but I really like more color than that. Throw in the unbordered edges and by matting them some print will get cut off and it makes it even more challenging making a decision.

I'm giving more and more thought to framing them individually and just hanging them side by side but I haven't come to a final decision yet and it's coming up on a year already! Ughhh!

I'm toying with having my father-in-law, who is a master woodworking genius, make a custom frame for the Burwell Chicago triptych.  I would put them edge-to-edge and probably forgo a matte, but keep forgetting to look at some mockups.

Here's an image of the three together.

That looks good John but it also shows part of my dilemma. The three MMJ's along the top and the three Chicago's along the bottom make this not a normal looking triptych to me. Especially with the white border coming down between the tops of 1-2 and 2-3.

It's like they make them individual prints that should be hung separately, while the heart of the prints look like a true triptych that should be hung as one print. I think if the tops ran together like the bottoms I'd be more inclined to hang them as one but I find myself leaning more and more towards doing them separate.

I don't think there's a right or wrong with these but Guy did us no favors with these beauties. Definitely tricky to say the least. For me anyway.

I just noticed the Red Rocks prints aren't the usual 18x24. They are a half inch shorter in each side. I'm surprised you found an off the shelf frame that fit.

Do you guys have any suggestions on framing/placing variants? I just ordered the Iriqouis set. Is there any special glass, light, or sunlight placement you suggest?? If there is little sunlight dos that make the variant less special?

When I got the Beacon variant run framed, I went with an anti-glare UV protection glass. Does a really nice job of tempering the brightness of the foil, but still letting you notice it. I have pictures of them on the previous page. I think that glass ran an extra $65 per frame from the shop I used. a bit pricey, but I think it was worth it.

UV protection glass is most definitely worth it if your posters/art is going to be exposed to sunlight,IMO.

In fact I like it on my framed pieces because it also seems to cut down on any glare or reflection no matter where it's hung. I don't think it's a must do though unless it's exposed to sunlight.

I can't speak to variants because I don't have any but I'd imagine if I spent the extra money to own some and frame em, I'd also go with the museum quality/UV protection glass. I know how good my regular prints look with it so I'm sure the UV glass would only enhance the variant.

I went with a simple (cheap = $20 on sale) frame at Michael's. It is an 18 X 24 frame, so there is a slight bit of "play" in the placement (doesn't matter due to the large amount white space all around the image).

That's how I looked at it. They're works of art which are beautiful and considering those four nights of music, have amazing sentimental value. I want them to stay in as good shape as possible for as long as possible. I would have gone for the museum glass, but I believe that was something around an additional $150 per frame. With four pieces to get framed, it was already a pricey job.

But the anti-glare works perfectly. 2 of the 4 posters are across a window (for reference, nights #3 and #4....#3 which is practically entirely foil) and the anti-glare makes a world of differences.

Thanks to generosity and collaboration, I have all 3 Red Rocks prints on my living room wall.  Just basic framing; I still can't justify putting 10 times more cash into a frame than into the poster (though, based on eBay, perhaps its more like only twice as much).

Thanks, Eric!  I decided to retire the Burwell spacemen for now and replaced them with two Slater landscapes.  The one on the left is a band-signed print for the Milwaukee 2-night run from Father's Day weekend 2015.  The one on the right is a gold foil from Atlanta.

Like YYac, I can't seem to justify the extra cost to frame what are relatively inexpensive posters, but Emb, those look so good I have to consider for the RR print.  Did you order the frame and matting from HL?  What is HL or what does it stand for?  I'll check out their site.   The posters surrounded by matting might stand out too much amongst all my other non-matted ones up on the wall.  I get all my standard sized frames at Michaels, which always has frames on sale.

Just to mention I bought a few frames (not for posters) at www.framemyrecord.com  Good quality stuff, quick shipping, and fair prices.

I just order my matting from Hobby Lobby. I order my frames from Amazon. I've found some decent frames via Arttoframes and I get them in 2 days with my prime account. Hobby Lobby has the same weekly sales. 40% off any item.

The first time I matted posters was the 2 night run in Chicago in 08 and once I saw how good they looked in person... I never went back. It's kind of an addiction

Awesome! I have a theory where these two posters are about transitioning to a new dimension. Death. Life. Etc. I think they go great together.

You should be! It looks great.

I'm a fan of double matting as well, and even add a third to my Burwells.

Had to... Reno put it so close to the edge, there was no way to keep it visible. That's where Burwell shines - he understands that people frame his posters and accounts for it in the design. Ken Taylor is also great at this. I keep praying that MMJ will get him to do some prints someday...

The Reno sig is definitely too close to the edge to matte and frame on the RR. I barely got it in  on my T5 and this one is closer to the edge. Matt Leunig did the same thing with the St. Augustine poster, and I had to unfortunately cover his sig up as well.

I'd love to see Ken Taylor do some MMJ prints. I love his stuff, especially his Phish  Alpharetta GA 2011 one.

Yeah that's a beauty and it'd be great if he does some Jacket prints.

Here's that Phish one I was talking about. It was some pretty eerie foreshadowing because we got hit with a hell of a storm pre show and again mid first set. Band had to be pulled off stage and we didn't know if they'd be able to come back on. After about an hour of intense rain, wind and lightning they finally did. Definitely a memorable show for me and this poster fits the night perfectly.

Just got my Burwell 2016 Red Rocks variants back from the framer... one is #5/15 and the other is #9/15. Man, these were tricky. The different color papers and the crazy colors made it challenging to find mats that complemented both. Chose a dark grey field mat, plus 2 accent mats - one is lavender, the other is royal blue. Also added an acrylic spacer between the accent mats for additional depth.

Love those posters Crispy. They are sorta an unofficial set. I have those also but have not framed them yet. Seeing them brings to mind that we all need to keep Guy in our thoughts as he battles that dreaded disease, cancer. He's doing a little better and actually working as he can. Don't be surprised to see something of his at the NYE shows.
Also keep Randy Fung and his wife Leah in your thoughts as she also battles cancer. Maybe not my place to bring these things up but the more positive energy these people get the better in my opinion.

Thanks for the info about Guy and Randy's wife, rough times for them and I'm sure they'll appreciate any help they can get. Glad to hear that good news about Guy.

These posters share the same decorative border, and there's one other (as far as I know) like them, from NYE that year. Guess I could go ahead and try to get that one and put it up with the set, since I missed that Portland show too, and I've been breaking that silly unwritten rule about unattended show posters for a while with others anyhow.

Quick note: I am poor as shit right now, so the frames were cheap ones I found at thrift stores. Frames will be upgraded to nicer ones once I have more money

OBH4 poster will be joining the club as well.

I'll spare you the details but after a couple of trades and a little $ it basically cost me $50. If that plus shipping is cool with you, we're good.   If you want to wait till Colorado, I'll just bring it with me. If not I can put it in a tube and send it to ya. I only have a few posters from shows I didn't go to, and this is one. I grabbed it for trade bait in case I ever missed out on getting a poster to a show I went to but I still have a couple of other nice ones I can trade down the road if that ever happens. This one would definitely have a better home up there on your wall with the other three Burwells than sitting in my Itoya portfolio. It's a beauty that should be framed and hung, and I'd be psyched knowing you'll have it up there with the others.

Sounds good, man, let's figure it out in Colorado. Maybe I'll be able to justify hanging it up to complete the set even though I wasn't at 50% of those shows with the knowledge that I'm only one degree of separation from a bunch of peeps who were!
