Title: The Black Crowes Appreciation Thread
Post by: Shug on Nov 17, 2012, 02:07 PM
Just some info for those interested...

Crowes come out of the gate ON FIRE in 1992 touring Southern Harmony.  This whole show is on YouTube song by song.  The Crowes at their most Humble Pie-est!
Black Crowes - No speak no slave - 1992 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl6Hi4Utuyo#)

They recorded another show for Germany TV from the same venue in 1995 and you can see and hear the drugs starting to have their influence on the music.  Its way stonier than just three years earlier.
The Black Crowes - Wiser Time (Live in Germany) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt3f2v6XOmY#)

The live DVD Into The Fog http://www.amazon.com/The-Black-Crowes-Freak-Roll/dp/B000EHSVO6/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1353177999&sr=8-6&keywords=into+the+fog (http://www.amazon.com/The-Black-Crowes-Freak-Roll/dp/B000EHSVO6/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1353177999&sr=8-6&keywords=into+the+fog)  is a great representation of what they sounded like when Marc Ford came back in 2005.

This may not look that impressive on paper, but trust me, this is one of the most intense shows they ever played, absolutely blazing jamming.  http://instantlive.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?cp=858_4575_8569&pc=IVCD208 (http://instantlive.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?cp=858_4575_8569&pc=IVCD208)

Other really good live stuff is the two-night all acoustic shows at Town Hall, NYC in 2008.  This was with Luther Dickinson, but he sounds good playing lots of slide in the acoustic setting. http://www.liveblackcrowes.com/live-music/0,3263/The-Black-Crowes-mp3-flac-download-11-3-2008-BC-Roadshow-New-York-NY.html (http://www.liveblackcrowes.com/live-music/0,3263/The-Black-Crowes-mp3-flac-download-11-3-2008-BC-Roadshow-New-York-NY.html)

Shake Your Money Maker and The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion were two of the better albums of their time.  I loved these guys.  And just to dig a little at the grunge fans, who I debated in another thread, I don't think there was a single grunge album better than TSHAMC, which came out in 1992.

Glad you did, Fully! Just doin' my part to spread the gospel of real rock 'n' roll!

exist10z, I used to get a lot of shit from the other employees of the record store I worked at in the early 90s for being a Black Crowes and Lenny Kravitz fan.  They'd say in disgust "But it sounds so RETRO!"  and I'd say, "Yeah, that's exactly why I like it!"  I still don't understand the cult of originality in aesthetics we have in the modern West.  For me if its good, its good no matter if you were the first or the 100th band to make a certain sound.  But that's just me.

I like them too. That bluesy rock sound never gets old to me. Some modern rock is a little too whiney and wimpy for me - not all, but some of it should just be in an entirely different category than rock.

I was at both of those Town Hall shows in 2008. Still 2 of my favorite Crowes shows to listen to. But what made the 2nd night really amazing was walking out into Time square afterwards and being with so many people when it was announced that Obama had won!

probably no group that was doing better Stones covers than these guys.

Yep.  Can't You Hear Me Knockin', Torn and Frayed, Lovin' Cup, Happy, Tumblin' Dice.  Seems they appreciate Exile on Main Street!

Don't you think that a big part of the reason they can do such great Stones covers is that they are a direct descendant of the Sticky Fingers, Exile era Stones? I'm not saying that to criticize them. I could live a happy life if more music sounded like it came from that era.

Yeah, I do, Fully.  Although its very true, they, in the early days, understandably tried to deny it, claiming more obscure influences (but not less accurate) like Humble Pie and Leon Russell.

I've always thought of Jagger, Steve Tyler and for about 10 years, Chris Robinson as generational descendants.  Nothing like an over-the-top arrogant and overly confident showboat personality for leading a real rock 'n' roll band, as long as they are good enough to justify the arrogance!

These guys rule.  Just heard them for the first time in a while recently.
early stuff was incredible.. wish they could have kept that up for a bit longer.  It's sad they had so many personnel changes though.
They could jam like few others when they were in their prime.

I LOVED the reunion shows in 05-06 but I think their peak was probably 1996-97.

Do you, by chance, remember what the guy from the audience was yelling out that made Chris tell him to fuck off?  On the recording, you can only hear Chris' rant in response, not what instigated the rant.

I have really been getting back into The Black Crowes since 2010's Croweology came out. I love the alternate versions of all those killer old songs! I had gotten into them originally back around 1992 after The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion came out. I made a recording of that and Shake Your Money Maker from a friend's CD onto a 90 min. tape and listened to it all the time in the mid 1990's. I later bought Amorica, and Three Snakes and One Charm in the 1990's. I didn't buy anything of theirs until Croweology. After that, I went back and got By Your Side, Warpaint, and Until the Frost...Until the Freeze. I recently got the two newest CRB albums. I also have all of their DVD's except for Warpaint Live. Next, I have to find the live album they made with Jimmy Page. That should be great!

I was also at these shows and will never forget when Rich gave an update and then we walked into Times Square to see the results! Those were 2 of the best out of many many EXCELLENT shows in NYC over the years!

As much as I loved the 90's version, and the 2005 reunion version of the band, something about Luther really took my love to a different level! Damn he was fun to watch on stage with Rich and Chris!!

I was thinking about this a little more when the Crowes doing You Don't Miss Your Water live came up on shuffle on my iPod.

I think what made the Crowes so great at covering the Stones and other grand masters of that era is that they understood the path of influences that lead the Stones to be what they were.  They didn't just try to mimic the Stones or Zepp or Humble Pie. The Crowes understand, on a deep musical level, Muddy Waters and Gram Parsons, for example, as much as they understand The Stones.  A simple point, perhaps, but I think really important when it comes to separating the mere imitators from the ones who do a real living breathing authentic re-creating of the sound and feel of a particular time and style of music.  I really think the Crowes are vastly under-appreciated as torch-bearers for real rock 'n' roll music.

The live album with Page is well worth getting.  One year for my birthday party, my brother cranked that sucker up to concert-level loudness through his brand new $6000 speakers.  It sounded fucking awesome until the speakers blew out!  The Crowes and Page doing Zeppelin, Yardbirds and blues songs was truly a beautiful match.  They frickin' nailed it, IMO.  Even the odd time signature stuff like Nobody's Fault But Mine, just wailing.  Chris played a mean harp, too.

Another CD worth getting is the Lost Crowes.  Its got the outtakes from Amorica (very strong stuff, but I can't believe they left off the songs Exit and Title Song, you gotta get those from a bootleg called Tall or Taller Than All) and a pretty cool album that was finished but never released called The Band.  It was Marc Ford's last record, done in Nashville, more songwriter-y than previous.

I would love to see another Brothers of a Feather tour. I saw the NYC shows and loved them. Maybe next year after CRB finishes touring.  Also I just picked up a new CRB 7" that is 2 covers. I love that Chris has been putting out high quality vinyl.

Me, too, dude.  I'm not holding my breath, though.  As much as I love the Crowes and as highly as I think of Chris and his encyclopedic knowledge and appreciation of great music, I'm just not that enamoured with his recent love affair with the Grateful Dead and the lazy, meandering jamming that CRB is doing (and I really love the Dead, too).  Most of my Crowes-loving friends love CRB, so I'm mostly alone on that one.  I think CR, at this point in his musical career, is way better when Rich is involved.  Brothers Of A Feather shows were also really really good.

I like Phosphorescent Harvest pretty well too. I have all 3 of their studio albums and got all 5 Betty Cantor-Jackson recorded shows from San Francisco in December of 2012 off of Livedownloads a couple of weeks ago. They sound wonderful! I'm going to see CRB on June 20th at Louisville's newest live venue, the Mercury Ballroom, which holds around 900. It should be a killer show.

As far as the Black Crowes downloads go, I have only purchased one show. I went for the September 12, 2001 show due to the short write-up on the Livedownloads site. I am drawn to things that were happening at that particular moment in time. The recording of that 9/12/2001 show is a little quiet, but the show itself was pretty special.

I am still waiting for some input from Shug on the topic of exactly which shows/time periods represented in the Livedownloads collection of BC shows are my best bet.

You really can't go wrong with any of the shows from the 96/97 tour, but I really think the 2005 tour (Sept-Dec) was their best. Check out the setlist from 12/30/05- top notch!

So 5-14-05 is my top recommendation, but its not at liveblackcrowes.com just at the link I posted above to buy the physical discs, but its truly a must-have, IMO.

12-30-05 Providence, as Logan mentioned is excellent, too.

Other great shows from the 2005-2006 with Marc Ford and Eddie Harsch that are at liveblackcrowes.com are:

8-10-05 Fillmore, SF
3-19-06 London
3-20-06 London
8-1-06 Columbus, OH (blazing Ford solos on Got To Get Better and Steady Rollin' Man!!!)

I'm not as much a fan of '96 and '97 but many fans think those years are the peak.  Anything from Europe in '97 is probably a pretty safe bet.

Let us know what you pick up and what you think!

They put out a lot of high energy for that show. Thanks again, Shug! I'll probably move on to that 12/30/2005 show next (after my finances recover a bit...been getting a lot of new albums lately).

Right on, Mr. White.  Ain't that jam before Black Moon Creeping some of the sickest Zeppelin-like stuff you've ever heard a 90s band do?  They are so deep into that dirty nasty groove,  I love that show!  Marc Ford was such a badass back then.  Wish he and Eddie were still in the Crowes and rocking hard.  It was sweet while it lasted.

Hallelujah!  I had a feeling this was coming!  The Crowes are getting back together (because this is The Black Crowes without the brother who turned into a douchebag, IMO, regardless of what they choose to call it) with their best guitar player and their best keyboard player.  Steve Gorman will be joining eventually, I predict!  I am beyond freaking stoked to think of seeing Rich, Marc Ford, Eddie Harsch and Sven laying it down on some Crowes classics, covers, and solo original stuff, all together.  Who needs CR, he's the drama queen negativity creator fake hippie poseur, good riddance.  Let the positive ones get on the with great music.  Sorry if my opinion offends, but its what I really think is the truth.

Rich Robinson—singer-songwriter-guitarist and co-founding member of The Black Crowes—has announced the formation of THE MAGPIE SALUTE. It's an exciting new band that brings together four key members of The Black Crowes—Rich, guitarist/vocalist, guitarist Marc Ford, keyboardist Eddie Harsch, and bassist Sven Pipien—with members of Rich's own band: drummer Joe Magistro, keyboardist Matt Slocum, and backing vocalists Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen, along with some other friends.

THE MAGPIE SALUTE will be unveiled January 19 when they headline the Gramercy Theatre in New York, performing songs from The Black Crowes catalog, solo material from Rich and Marc plus "whatever else may materialize," says Rich. Pre-sale tickets will be available October 19, followed by the general on-sale October 21: See link below and watch the video trailer here.

"The name The Magpie Salute comes from a superstition based in the UK," explains Rich about the band's moniker. "There are many variations, but the version I'm drawn to is the belief that if you see a Magpie, you would do well to salute it "to ward off negativity, or to have a good day." The way you salute the Magpie, based on some traditions is to say 'Good Mornin' Captain.' The reason we salute is to show we're unarmed, or what I like to say is 'we come in peace.' The Magpie falls within the Crowe umbrella of species, figuratively and literally. Magpies can be black and white which represents the light and the dark. I figured all of these things touch on many aspects of my life and this experience."

Asked about THE MAGPIE SALUTE's multiple players and singers, Rich says, "I wanted to try something different. I wanted to hear this music with two drummers, two keyboard players, and multiple singers. I, and everyone involved, love playing music. Not only on our own, in The Crowes and in my band, but playing music in general. We want to make music again together with a fresh perspective. To present this music I wrote in a different light with these amazing players is going to be really special to me."

Will the Gramercy Theatre show have the songs and improvisational flights that The Black Crowes were famous for? "Absolutely, that's what we do when we get together," says Marc. "Now the vocal position will obviously be different... it opens other places to go with different singers. The bottom line for me is that we love playing together; we have a respect for what we've done together and for all of the people that want to hear it."

THE MAGPIE SALUTE marks the reunion of the Robinson and Ford guitar team. (Ford left The Black Crowes after their fourth album and 1997 Further Festival tour.) "The Crowes have had their share of guitar players," says Rich. "Each one has been really cool to play with and each one has brought their own unique playing to the band. That being said, I personally feel that Marc and I have a very deep musical connection. The way he and I played together on those records really showcases that musical bond. As I get older I realize what a gift it is to play with people with whom you share that language of music." Reflecting about their deep musical connection, Marc says: "It's one of those things that was there before we met. Musically we were already family."

The seeds were planted for THE MAGPIE SALUTE in August 2016 when Rich performed in Woodstock (New York) at Applehead Studio where he's recorded his last three albums. "Sven Pipien has been playing with me on my current tour. So for fun I decided to invite Marc and Eddie from the original Crowes lineup to join us. It turned out to be such a cool, cathartic, and inspirational experience for us all. We all have such a strong musical connection from that band. Most importantly we all have a life's worth of family experience together. We've travelled the world together, seen a lot of far out experiences, playing with our heroes, emotional ups and downs, all wrapped within a very unique life experience, which is the thread that has always kept the connection together." Marc says about the show at Applehead Studios: "The playing was an amazing second to seeing their faces."

THE MAGPIE SALUTE chose NYC for their first show because, says Rich, "New York has always been really supportive of me and the Crowes. I thought it would be a great place to unveil this."

Glad I'm not the only one!  I'm positive this is not just a one-off show, there are lot of hints in the press release and they would not go to all this trouble to name a new band and all that if they weren't going to make it a tour at least.

I'd love to see this first show, like those who got to see the initial 2005 reunion shows at the Hammerstein in NYC, but I have to wait for the tour, too.  It gives Steve a chance to decide to join (just like it took him a few weeks of them playing without him in 2005 to decide to join).

I love the idea of Rich and Marc sharing lead vocals with the soulful backup singers to sweeten the whole sound just like with Jerry Garcia Band or Dylan's bands in the 80s.  There is something satisfying about the contrast and blend of raspy lead vocals and sweet backup vocals that I love.

But for me having Eddie Harsch back on keys is a huge huge deal.  I can't decide who I missed more, Marc Ford or Eddie, when they left the band in 2006.

Bring it on!

It may be a longshot for him to join.

I was very lucky to have been at that 2005 first night reunion show at Hammerstein, and also a few nights later for the Good Friday show of that run. :) You can't imagine the anticipation leading up to it and the excitement when they walked on to that stage!

Yep, demand is high.  After the pitiful turnouts for the two shows I saw on the Rich Robinson tour last month (100 people at a 300 seat venue on a Saturday night in Austin, TX, a town huge on live music) and how bummed he and Sven were, its gotta be gratifying and a clear indicator of what people want for these shows to sell out so fast.

They will tour and I still think Steve will join.  Rich said he wants to have two guitars, two keys, and two drummers.  The only thing missing in that equation is Steve.  I'm sure he's been invited.  He may be reluctant to join for a variety of reasons, but once it gets flying, he will come around, I predict!

Can't wait for a full tour, they probably won't announce that until after these shows are done, I'm guessing.

I got tickets for the Friday night show, can't wait!
Very excited that they're doing this and believe the music will be stellar.  I will miss Chris' pipes at times on some songs, but can totally see why they left that arrogant dude behind.

did he really want 100% of earnings if they reunited?  is that rumor true?   what a dink.

I saw Rich solo last year in KY and the turnout was pretty weak as well.
But it was in an old church turned music venue, with stained glass and all, and it was a very cool show!

It's a shame that Rich's solo shows were so poorly attended. During the Crowes' first hiatus I was more excited to see what Chris would do, but now I'll take Rich's output every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Haven't even purchased the last two CRB albums.

Post by: Shug on Oct 27, 2016, 01:14 PM
The two Rich shows we saw last month in Austin and San Antonio had fantastic music.  The vibe was not great due to the low turnout, but they played so masterfully.  No repeats in two nights.  2 hour + shows, two sets each night.  I got to hear all his incredible ballads and mid tempo songs.  He has put out some mediocre tunes on the past two studio albums, IMO, but every album he's done has had one or two or three mindblowingly great tracks that I'd put along side the best stuff by The Band, Dylan, anybody, really.

The Giving Key, For To Give, In You, Time To Leave are all so brilliant and so up my soulful roots rock songwriting alley.  And in the middle of that they bust out a 10 minute instrumental homage to the Allman Brothers with Laila II, jamming their asses off in a deep and jazzy groove.  Its not everyone's cup of tea, but I think Rich is a genius mastercraftsman.  It was so great to have Sven back in his band.

Magpie Salute is going to take all that to another level with Marc Ford and Eddie Harsch.  I cannot wait and so wish I was going to NYC for the debut.

I wound up getting a ticket for the Nashville show on the following Sunday (April 29, 2018) at the Ryman Auditorium. I went all in and got the very expensive VIP ticket that includes the meet and greet with signed poster and more. My seat is almost dead center on the first row of wooden benches (behind two rows of folding chairs directly in front of the stage). I got the $11.60 insurance in case I can't make it (first time ever purchasing this). I got the insurance because the ticket was $178.50 after fees. My brother lives in Nashville, so I should be able to spend some time with him either before or after the show. Should be a fun show!

I would have loved to go to The Ryman show instead, but that would have meant a hotel and time off work, etc. I've only been to The Ryman once for 2 nights of The Black Crowes in 2013. Those seats will be incredible.

I am not really a fan of the venue in Lexington where they're playing, but again, grateful to get to see one of these shows.

The dude who capped on his brother for being in a "Black Crowes tribute band" is now starting his own Crowes tribute band? Can you say fucking hypocrite?  The more he runs his ignorant arrogant mouth the more I despise Chris Robinson.  What a douchebag.

https://www.jambase.com/article/chris-robinson-takes-aim-john-mayer-rich-robinson-howard-stern-show

"Donald Trump is president, John Mayer's in the Grateful Dead and my brother is a Black Crowes tribute band." When Howard pushed Chris for his thoughts on John Mayer, Robinson responded "the Grateful Dead has turned into this giant nipple that everyone sucks off of to get money." He added, "I'm not a big John Mayer fan. Jerry Garcia is a hero of mine. Everything that Jerry Garcia ever talked about or stood for – John Mayer is the antithesis." When Stern tried to rebut Chris's take, Robinson offered, "he knows all the licks, there's nothing unique about his playing. Jerry was one of the most unique musicians in the world. Jerry never played anyone else's licks and now here's John Mayer playing everyone else's licks."

Chris spent a few minutes talking about his distaste for his brother and other members of the Crowes. Robinson said he doesn't hate his old mates, but wouldn't perform with them again even if the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. The vocalist also took aim at Rich's songwriting skills.

It was a lot of fun.  It was definitely a "greatest hits" show and it felt a little weird at first.   It didn't quite have the same feel as an old classic show but great times nonetheless.  Chris hasn't learned any new moves lol.

The meet and greet was very quick (I've never been to one, so it may be the standard, I don't know). I did mention to him about seeing him perform at last year's Bourbon and Beyond in Louisville and again about 3 years ago at the Mercury Ballroom. He said I must be based out of Louisville, and I said yes and proceeded to suggest he collaborate with My Morning Jacket if he could (I was wearing my Jim silhouette shirt from rincon2 at the time). He looked at me and kind of nodded his head, and I moved along. I didn't ask for an autograph since he had already signed the VIP tour posters (the rest of the band didn't sign).

The show was really good. I had the front row of wooden pews and only had the two rows of folding chairs in front of me. I was pretty much dead-center. I thought they played pretty tight, and Chris' singing was fantastic. Wish I could have seen the real Black Crowes before they quit touring. This was good though.

I'm pretty happy about all the news that broke yesterday and I got tickets for Deer Creek this summer. I think these giant venues might be a little ambitious, but I hope it goes well.

I know it'll never be what it was and I'm very lucky I saw the old band as many times as I did. But all these years off has only made me want to see them more. I loved the CRB but that is over. I saw Magpie Salute, and although the band was excellent, their live show was really lacking in the singer department.

From what I've read about the first show last night, it sounds like the band they have are all quality musicians. I wish they weren't going to play the same set every night, but since that's what this tour is about, I'm only planning on going to one show.
Title: Re: The Black Crowes Appreciation Thread

at least they aren't bs'ing anyone on their motivations for the reunion and the venues they've decided to play

"It was always there for us to put this band together and do it because there's money to be made and that motivates 99.9999% [of people]," Chris said in addressing how the brothers got back together. "I think Rich and I have made decisions separately and together that yes, I'm a capitalist, I'm not trying to be a marxist or anything that I'm not ... but everything has come full circle."

I'm happy for Black Crowes fans that this is happening (even though none of the original band members are involved except the Robinsons).

Out of curiosity, I checked availability and prices....... tons of seats available and prices are high.  It may have been wishful thinking as far as demand.  I heard the brothers on Howards Stern, and said they now get along and can make this reunion happen.  I didn't hear the entire interview, but at some point they may have mentioned that they are in the 99.999999 motivated by money.

If the Gallaghers buried the hatchet, that would be huge.  Oasis, especially in England, would be massive.

yea, see my quote in a post earlier. Chris said its about the money. He tried to run some BS a couple weeks back about this is the "purest" Black Crowes because its back to basics, no jamming. They are hoping that brings back casual fans I guess but most fans that have stuck with them and follow the various offshoots probably like the jamming.

Gonna be gross when he tries to re-boot CRB without Neal...

Yep - if by "pure" he means the band as it was in 1990, then that's fine if Chris wants that.  We shall see how many fans of that there are out there.  I couldn't believe that they are trying to fill the Forum in LA - pretty huge venue!!

However to me and many other fans who have been into the band over the recent years, I think the jamming is part of what made them special.  Playing the songs just as they are on the album just isn't very interesting to me - IMO.

No jamming, is a big no thanks for me with this band. That is was brought me in and started to love them in the early 2000's.
Combine that with the exorbitant ticket prices they are charging for a Wednesday night concert at a venue that is way too big for them. Hate to be negative but i see this being a huge failure.

I wonder if they will change any of their plans since everything has been pushed due to the pandemic?  Unless Marc Ford is playing with them I am not interested.

I did find this old clip from the classic lineup days, they were on fire back then!

Hey, Chief! Someone also just uploaded a bunch of demos - do you know if those are circulating individually? Are there any trading groups left or good message boards anymore?

Hope you're doing OK.

I don't know... what are these demos? Do you have a list or where to get them?

I have no idea if there are any good groups left anymore.   Sadly, it seems like fb destroyed all of those.

Thanks, i'm ok - hope all is well with you.

Another great one that just popped up from their heyday in 95 which I'd never seen before -

A user on YouTube has been steadily uploading them.

Wasn't planning on checking out the date of the Chris/Rich/hired guns tour near me but they're running a promo this week with lawn seats for only 20$/pop (having trouble selling out it seems) so now I'm thinking about it. I'm in my late 20s so my only experience with previous iterations of TBC live is via youtube videos of sets, and while this version isn't going to touch those, it's better than nothing and I'm itching to get back to a show this month. Bummer they aren't doing any jams but the lady and I could probably sit on the lawn and enjoy the "hits" with low expectations

Anyone else planning to hit up the tour, such as it is?
