Title: RIP to a dear MMJ fan
Post by: exist10z on Jan 07, 2013, 10:26 AM

Hi, im Misti, Erik's wife. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. But, I know what a huge fan my husband, Erik, was of MMJ and the friends he met through these boards. I'm sad to report that after a fantastic weekend in Port Chester, listening to the band closest to his heart, he passed away suddenly Thursday. ironically, we found him in his chair by his computer, downloading the shows from Port Chester. Those shows, along with the ones at the Wiltern in LA, meant so much to him. An MMJ fan through and through, the music brought him so much happiness. For those of you who chatted with him here, thank you. He was able to meet some great folks here and shared the MMJ love with many of you. RIP, my love. May Jim James play a special one for you one of these days. Love you, my soulmate.

Best,
Misti

Deepest condolences, Misti. I didn't interact with Erik much, but he was a very significant contributor here and I was always interested in what he had to say. May his memory continue to bring you as much happiness as I'm sure you and the music did for him.

Misti - I'm so sorry about Erik.   I met him at the Wiltern.   How wonderful that he was able to make it to the PC shows and have such happiness in his last days.

I'm so sorry and sad for you and your family, Misti.  I met Erik in person once, at the Wiltern, but we didn't know who one another were.  We since had some really solid interactions here in cyberspace and he impressed me a lot with his intelligence and thoughtfulness and his passion for music.  A couple weeks ago, he contacted me through email.  He had figured out who I was and he told me that seeing me and my wife at those shows made him really wish he was together with you at those shows.  I mention that in hopes that at some point it will help you to know that even when he was rocking out to his favorite music, he missed you.  Best wishes to you and your and Erik's family.  My heart goes out to you.

Misti - (as you probably saw from his inbox) I PMed w/ Erik a lot in the weeks leading up to PC.    He was so excited for the shows and I really wanted to meet him.   As others have said, he was always a thoughtful, positive contributer and was honestly his participation was one of the bright spots of this forum this year.

I bought myself a ticket for night one of PC, not knowing if I could make it.   When it looked like it wasn't going to happen, I sold it to Erik.    Less than a week later, my schedule freed up and I was looking for a ticket.   Erik emailed me numerous times "feeling bad" that he bought my ticket, which was ridiculous because I sold it fair and square.   He then proceeded to spread the word for me and forward a few craigslist tickets for sale.    Finally when I bought one, as happy as I was he seemed more enthused! and offered to be me drinks.   Completely unnecessary of course!!  This is just a little story but it said an awful lot to me about your husband and the degree he was willing to help out someone he had never even met in person.

Words can't express how sorry I am to hear this news.  My father passed away suddenly just over a year ago and it is still hard to believe he isn't with us anymore.  Cherish the memories you have with Eric and it was good that he got to experience one last weekend of true joy spent with the band he loved during the PC run.

I never got to meet your husband, but as has been said, he was always fun to interact with here on the forum and was definitely a valuable and knowledgable member of this forum and will truly be missed!

Please accept my deepest condolences to you and your families as you try to get through the difficult days and weeks ahead...

oh no...this is terrible news.
I never got a chance to meet Erik in person...but I enjoyed his contributions to the board, and I had some limited interaction with him on the board when I tried (unsuccessfully) to get Erik some tickets for PC....he said he was hoping to take his sister to the thursday show...I wasn't able to come through...I don't know if she ever made it out there...hopefully she did and they were able to spend that time together

To Misti, I'm so sorry for your loss.  obviously there are no words to ease the whatever pain you must be feeling.  Please know, that all of us will keep you and your family in our prayers.

I talked (and differed) politics with him without it getting heated or personal. That, to me, is the sign of a true man.

I believe the point of a wordless chorus is to express something adequately when words themselves will not suffice. That seems to be appropriate here.

My condolences.

Erik you fellow Baltimoron.  I think we did in fact meet in passing at Port Chester at the second line on the first night though I did not know it was you at the time.  It was a pleasure playing fantasy football with you this year and your thoughtful presence here will be missed.

RIP Brother

Misti,

I am deeply saddened to hear of Erik's passing.  He was an extremely bright, thoughtful and positive person, who brought so much to all of our daily lives just by being who he was/is.  I cannot begin to imagine what it feels like to lose your soulmate...the thought has made me cry several times today.  But I truly believe that soulmates travel through many lives together, and though it does not diminish your loss in the present, hopefully it adds light to your future.  I truly encourage you to use The Forum as a place to share your thoughts on anything, and if there is ever an MMJ show that you would like to peg as a 'memorial show' for your dear one, I'm sure everyone on here would be ready to celebrate his life with you.  I am so sorry, Misti. I am praying for you and your family. And if there's any way we can help you through this, please let us know.

God Bless.

Misti,

So sorry to hear of Erik's passing. My deepest sympathies, and  condolences to you and your family. I exchanged some pm's with Erik, but I only got to meet him briefly, and that was to sell him a pair or MMJ PC tix to the Thursday show. I never did get to hang online or inside with him for long, but he was as happy as could be to be in PC, meet some of the forum faithful, and was really psyched to be going to the show. His smile, and excitement for the show is something I won't soon forget. So glad that my extras went to him, and he got to enjoy the show.

Misti,
I met Erik at the Wiltern shows. We both had some trouble with will call on night one, and I resolved it  before the second show. I assured him via this site he would have no problems getting his tickets for night 2. We met in line. We hung out briefly before the show, and I met some of his friends,(at least I think he knew them before that night). He seemed like avery calm and peaceful man. Very sorry for your loss. If he has a file of pictures from the Wiltern shows taken by someone here, I took them and sent them to him.

Dear Misti,
I was saddened to read of  the tragic passing of your beloved Erik. Like many others I enjoyed his contributions to this forum. He was truly passionate about MMJ and so much other music.
We had recently discussed his very real admiration for a new artist that I , and some others, did not have the same interest in. His informative reasoning led me to delve further  and continue to keep my mind open to new music.
His posts about the PC shows, along with so many other wonderful forum members, dramaticly increased the enjoyment  and excitement I experienced  online here in cold, snowy Indiana.
I hope you can find some small comfort in the music that Erik loved so.
Like several other members who have written of losing loved ones, Jims' song-writing helped me in my time of grief.  My wonderful elderly Mother lost her long battle w/AD  in 2011, 3 days before the release of Circuital. Listening to  Wonderful  for the 1st time , in a small way, I began my healing process.

I'm going where there ain't no fear
I'm going where the spirit is near
I'm going where the living is easy
And the people are kind
A new state of mind
I'm going where there ain't no disease
I'm going where there ain't no police
I'm going where there ain't no need
To escape from what is
Only spirits at ease

Rock on, Erik - you will be missed!

Wow. All I can say is I have sincere gratitude for the kind words expressed here. These boards were the first thing I thought of when delivering the tragic news. Before, and after, the Wiltern and PC shows, this is the first place he'd go. While many of you haven't met him, I dare say many of you felt like good friends to him. The photo I posted in the initial post was him smiling ear to ear while they were playing "all night long". That is the most sincere smile Erik can have. Nothing gives me more peace than knowing I got to spend the last night of PC with him and see the non-stop smiles he had all night.

Whenever the time is right, I'd love to be there in spirit for him at the next show. I know it may be a while now that Boston has passed. If any of you can remember and think of me when a show is announced, give me a shout. He lives on in all the music he loved. We played MMJ and Band of Horses at his memorial yesterday. Seeing a live show again would be like having him at my side again. Much love to all of you.

Best,
Misti

I am deeply saddened to hear of Erik's passing.  We exchanged posts a number of times on old live albums, vinyl, etc and I felt a kindred spirit even though I never met Erik in person.  No doubt we did pass very close to one another in Port Chester, Merriweather and probably other venues and I was hoping to meet him soon, all the more given that he was a fellow Marylander.

I cannot imagine your grief, Misti, and I wish you strength moving forward.  You obviously will find much support and inspiration here as you need it and in the music your husband loved.

Misti,

I just wanted to express my condolences and share with you my own close loss. I am younger than most on these boards (23 years old) and have only become a My Morning Jacket fan within the last year or so, but I feel like I can relate to your loss on some level. My older brother Adam passed away in 2008, just as I was getting ready to begin college. We were big fans of the Dave Matthews Band. I still regularly listen to DMB and go to shows, and to be completely honest, it is when I feel closest to him in the sort of spiritual way. There is no question that music fuels strong emotions and memories, and it connects me to Adam more than anything else. I hope you find some comfort whether its in music or whatever else you shared with Erik.

I never spoke with Erik, but within the past few months as I began really listening to MMJ and preparing myself for these 3 shows at Port Chester, I do recall seeing some of his posts and appreciating his genuine excitement. These were my first MMJ shows, and I don't think I have to tell you or anyone else that went, but they were near flawless. I personally hate when people use cliche lines about the loss of people, especially when they were so close to you. But I do think its cool that he was probably in a happy state when he died.

Anyways, sorry if this was more rambling than consoling, but I just wanted to share.

-Alex

Thank you for that. Your words mean a lot to me. So sorry about your brother. My loss is excruciating beyond words really. But music brings me back to him. This will probably sound strange but I'll share it anyways. I may have even posted this on another thread so forgive me if so. Anyway, during the cover of "All Night Long" Saturday night in PC, Erik and I danced so close. He had his arms around me and kissed my cheek 'peanut' throughout the song ( he used to call my cheek my 'peanut'). It was a great memory and it is during that song that I took the picture you see in the beginning of this thread. This is the 'strange' part so forgive me. I got his ashes yesterday at the funeral home. When I got home, I went to You Tube, pulled up "All Night Long" at PC and turned it up loud, held his box of ashes close to me and danced to the song with him. Sorry if that sounded morbid to you guys but it was like I felt his spirit there smiling upon me.

Music is powerful and it is a love we both shared. In music, he will always be by my side. Again, anyone that would like to add me on FB, please do. I don't stay on top of MMJ shows as much as Erik did, so keep me in mind and I'd love to join you all one day.

All the best and thanks for the continued support.

Damn, just saw this news on FB a little bit ago. I never met Erik like many here it seems, but thoroughly enjoyed his contributions here and started talking to him more on here in the past 6 months or so. His enthusiasm for MMJ was easy to see on the forum, but I really appreciated his enthusiasm for other music/bands as well. Sorry for you & your family's loss Misti. Thanks for posting about it here as well, I think he would have wanted that.

Misti,

My condolences to you and your family.  May Erik live in all of our hearts forever through the music of My Morning Jacket.  I hope someday you can come to one of the shows and experience the music with us - and you can help bring Erik's spirit into that room so we can all say hello once again.

Much much love,
Casey

Misti,
Based on the picture, it looks like you were up in the Balcony on Sat. night with Ms GO4IT, myself and a few others from the forum. You and Erik were probably only steps away from where we were.  I remember during All Night Long that we were all dancing so hard that the balcony was just bouncing up and down - it was a bit fun and scary all at once and I posted this to the 12/29/12 thread at the time:
"Balcony moving out of control. I may fall out!"

Thanks for sharing that very special moment and I can definitely understand why you would want to remember and relive it.  We all understand how special their music is and how much comfort and joy it can provide.

If they come back to Merriweather I will host another local pre-party for the Forum Faithful and you must come.

Hi Misti,
So sorry to hear about your loss...this just seems crazy to me.  I know this kind of thing happens in life, but it always seems so far removed until it happens to someone you "know."  I never met your husband, but I really enjoyed reading his posts and playing Fantasy Football with him this year...I felt bad for him, that his team was performing so badly, through no fault of his own!

He seemed like a very kind, intelligent man, who I would have loved to meet in person.

I will add you on Facebook if that's okay!  (Dan Dunne)

Misti,

I'm so sorry for your loss.  I'm in the same boat with a lot of others here.  I never had direct contact with your husband, but he was clearly very intelligent, insightful and objective - all great qualities.  I read someone else use the term gut punch and thought that was pretty accurate to how I felt.  It speaks volumes that he had that kind of influence on so many that he never even met.  Peace.

I am just floored.  This is so special.  Misti, I hope you find comfort in Jim's words.

I'm absolutely speechless. The fact that Jim James left a tribute to my beloved soulmate (and surely one of his biggest fans), absolutely means the WORLD to me. Words cant express my gratitude or the considerable comfort his words gave me. If someone could relay now much that touched my heart, please do. It literally brightened my otherwise melancholy, tear-riden day. I hope to all join you again for a show in Erik's memory. His spirit lives with me in each MMJ song.

Wow, I'm just so speechless. So grateful for the kind words and support. Really quite surreal that Jim did that on Erik's behalf. Speaks volumes about his kind heart and commitment to his fans. Thank you, Jim.

Peace and love to you, Jim James. Erik is surely smiling ear-to-ear with that beautiful message.

Best,

Misti

Hi everyone,
This is my first post on this thread or on the forum as a whole.  I'm Erik's sister and I have been reading along with Misti all of these amazing posts from all of you, some of whom never met him in person.  I am sitting here in tears, overwhelmed with all the love and support coming out of all of you.  Erik was my older brother and always my music mentor from the time I started listening to my own music as an 11 year old.  I have countless "mix tapes" and eventually cd's that he has made for me over the years.  Needless to say, he introduced me to MMJ a few years ago and I, of course, fell in love.  He's been trying to get me to a live show ever since. He finally succeeded in Port Chester.  I'm sure I saw many of you there.  We were right there with many of you in the line debacle Thursday night when none of us knew where to go and then we finally got in early, what a thrill.  Erik kept telling me 90% of his excitement was having me there with him.  (one of you mentioned that you knew he was trying to get a ticket for his sister, well that was me and I was there) I'm so thankful that I was there with him for that show. He kept pointing some of you out and saying I think that's so and so from the board, but I'm not sure. I'd say, say hi! We were just 2 people back from the stage close to Carl but towards the middle, were any of you near us Thursday?   Ruckus, he spoke about you to me by name saying that you bonded over both being from Baltimore :)   Thank you so much to everyone for all the beautiful things you've said about my brother.  I can't express how much that means to all of us.  There are 4 of us siblings and we're all so tight, losing him has felt like someone has torn off one of my limbs.  I am absolutely floored and overwhelmed, like Misti, that Jim James left a message for her about Erik. What an amazing testament to what an incredible band MMJ is and how awesome the fans are.  I agree with the sentiment...best band and fans EVER.

Much peace to all of you, and I hope to meet all the exist10z family at a show in the future.

I'm glad you got to share that night (which was the best of the 3 in my opinion) with your brother! You were probably right next to many of us in line. Please come around here more often and hopefully we can meet again at a show. I was the girl bitching at the muscle-y bouncer who put us back into one line (lol). That was indeed a debacle. Sounds like a great bond you had with him and he sounds like a great guy.

Hope you won't be a stranger around here. We don't just talk music, we talk.....about music we don't like, too. :-)

Existsis, I've been thinking about your brother and Misti, and now you, non-stop since I learned of him passing and I wanted to share with you as I have with Misti, just how sorry I am for your loss. Your brother was obviously a special person and I'm sure the hole that is left in your life is immense.  So we will try to fill it with love and lots of music in the meantime for you and Misti and your other sibs. I never met your brother but he sounded like an awesome guy.  I hope some day you grow to instead of feeling sad for losing him feel blessed for having him.  I'm so worried that you will now associate MMJ with this painful time in your life. I really hope it becomes the medicine to help your healing instead!

This board is a special, special place, and I'm glad that you've found us and reached out. So much Love in return, from all of us!!!  (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/z5.gif)  The letter Jim wrote you is absolutely beautiful and touching, and I'm so glad you can always have it as a comfort.

My Grandma still dances with framed pictures of my Pap...... it is more than a beautiful thing to do.  You're not dancing alone!!!  I never met Erik and haven't been in here much to talk with him much, but I just wanted to send my Love for you and your family and friends, and I hope to meet you at a show sometime in the future!!! woody,
Wonderful story of your Grandma & Pap.
It , and Misti, inspired me  to play Johnny Cash covering Hank Williams' I Dreamed About Mama Last Night  and to dance w/ a picture of my late Mother- the beautiful , then 17 yr. old Marie.
Many tears... of joy, finally.
Happy to be able to share here w/ so many caring souls.

ExistSis,

I'm so sorry for your loss, and my deepest sympathies to you, and your siblings.

I just wanted to tell you how happy I am that you and Erik were the ones my extra PC Thursday tix went to. As bummed as I was that my daughter, and her boyfriend couldn't join me, it warms my heart to know that you guys got the tix, and were able to enjoy that show together. I know it would've been special for me to have my daughter there, but reading your thoughts on that night makes me feel that somehow, someway, those tix were meant for you and Erik all along, and ended up being the special evening I had hoped it would be when I bought them at the onsale.

I had been in touch with Erik through this site, but only got to meet him briefly out front of The Cap, and inside for a minute. He always seemed so genuinely nice to me, and if it's any comfort, I can still see his big smile he had that night. I remember thinking then, I was glad he got the tix, because he sure was happy to be there with you.

Eric

I for one will guarantee Roll Call tickets for Misti and Existsis when they come back to LA. With this network, I doubt either of you need my help, but if needed you can count on me. I would bet meeting the band is not unreasonable. I can't do anything about that, but apparently you both have some connected allies.

You guys are all awesome.  I know Misti and I and all of our family (my siblings, cousins, etc. since they've all been reading these posts, too!) are overwhelmed by the love and support coming from all of you.  We've all been talking and as soon as we can make it happen we all want to go to a show in Erik's honor.  After I got home from the PC show, I was telling everyone how amazing the MMJ fans were and how it was the best concert I had ever been to.  Even 3 feet from the stage, there was no crush, no pushing, just everyone together loving being there and listening to that music.  It was truly amazing and now seeing the outpouring of support here just makes me realize that even more.  Thanks, Ericm, for believing we were meant to have those tickets that night, I really think we were.  I'm truly thankful that Erik got to see all three of those shows, one with me, one with Misti and all three with his best friend, Brendan.  Thanks and love to all of you.

When I see all the love and support shown to Erik's family from people that knew him perhaps only tangentially or who didn't know him at all but just shared this special bond over this special band, and the reaction to that love and support by his loved ones, it gives me some comfort in knowing that whenever it is that I experience personal tragedy or loss this is a place that I can go to help keep my spirit intact.  I think it just speaks to the caliber of people in this community.  Thanks for all of you.

That message from Jim is outta this world.  There is just so much love and compasion amongst this forum, and to see that it reached the band and touched Jim enough for him to write.  It's a mind-blowingly powerful statement about the music, the guys who make it, and the folks who enjoy listening to it.
Im still crying....

Hi,

I wanted to reach out and send my love and thoughts. I live in LA and am planning on meeting up with your sister in law when she returns to California. I was outside the Capital Theater with Ericm the Thursday night he handed over the tickets to your brother. I remember Erik's excitement and anticipation for the show, which we all know so well. It made me smile! I must have been around him at the Wiltern shows as well looking back  I was deeply touched by your sentiment and music mentoring in your brother. I too have older brothers and my oldest's music was my training ground, listening to his records as a child. I was able to bring him to the Boston NYE show and share with him this community, meeting many people on the board. His sentiments were he couldn't get over all the love, diversity and community we had here.

I am beyond sorry for your loss and know that Erik has his hands in connecting you to all of us. I am so happy you were able to share that night with him! It will forever be carried in your soul and his as well. Much love and healing to you and your family!

If you ever need anything never hesitate to reach out!
xo Jenn

Well tonight was rough. The days in general have been getting harder. Reality is settling in now. Tonight, I drove Erik's car for the first time since he passed. He of course had a MMJ cd playing. Even more touching, in the back seat were empty thermos containers, empty boxes of granola bars and empty boxes of Gatorade (the size boxes you get at costco). A few days before Xmas, Erik drove down to a section of Baltimore where homeless people often congregated. He went down on a cold day, gave out cups of hot coffee, granola bars, water, Gatorade and assorted snacks. That was just like him, giving to others during a season where most of us have more than we could ever need. We talked about the fact that he actually felt guilty feeling 'so good' about himself for doing it. He wanted it to be such a selfless act that he didn't want any benefit for his own part in it. For those that read my post, please keep Erik's spirit alive and give back to the homeless in some small way. he really wanted to dedicate the rest of his life to helping others and I will continue his legacy in that respect.

Love you, soulmate. May you be somewhere where love and music are surrounding you. Miss you with all my heart and soul.

Misti

That was a very touching story, Misti.

The more I hear about Erik, the more it's obvious what a selfless and incredible person he was.

Baltimore certainly has more than its share of poor and homeless and it was nice to hear that Erik was trying to do his part to ease the suffering.

My daughter who is still living with us just started a job as a counselor in inner city Baltimore schools (after finishing up school in LA - I understand that's a connection for you and Erik as well) so will also be helping some very needy people in that community.

Please feel free to post more stories about Erik here.  I know I'm not the only one who wishes we knew Erik better and is deeply affected by your loss.

i went through Erik's posts tonight, trying to gain more insight and wow, that guy knew his music, can't believe his love for Steely Dan and his knowledge of politics, books, etc.

his first post: 12/11 I think..

Hello All.  I have 'lurked' here for years, but have been spurred to sign in to help get the number to 100.  Silly, I know, but whatever, hopefully I can contribute to the forum in the future.

This will be my fourth MMJ show and my excitement level is building by the day.  Previous shows included - Philly in 2008?,  NYE at MSG in 2008 (on my 40th birthday, amazing!), and Outside Lands in SF last year.

I will be attending with a few friends, two of whom were at the NYE show in 2008 with me, and one who has never seen MMJ before (he's going to be blown away). Thanks to everyone who shares information here and hope everyone has a great night on Wednesday.

Death affects everyone differently, and some people need to mourn before moving on. I don't agree that anything is "always" best for everyone. To each their own. All we can, and should do IMO,is be there for support if and when it's needed, and not project beliefs or tell people what's "best".

It was very nice to meet Misti tonight. She got to meet several board posters, and even a couple of lurkers that had met both myself and Erik at the Wiltern. She saw the WHOLE show dead center, second row behind people shorter than her, so it was like first row. A very cool video of the opening song will be posted on the Fonda Roll Call thread later.

Hey Misti,
Hope that you are hanging in there girl.  I do think of you, and I'm glad that this forum is here for you and all the wonderful posts your husband wrote in the past.  I think I told you before that I don't recall chatting with your husband, but I do remember reading some of his posts.
I believe that people who love music and bands - especially the way your husband did - and the way he wrote about his love for the band and music - well, that shows just how much of a beautiful person he was.  And so, you have to be a beautiful person as well.  I hope each day brings a little more peace to you and good memories of your husband.

God's grace to you and yours,

Hey all,

Just posted in Roll Call-Merriweather Post.  This is Erik's sister, we're all (siblings, cousins) attending MPP on Sunday if any of you will be there!  This will be bittersweet, but I can't wait for the show.  #steamengineforerik

I won't be there, but I wanted you to know I miss Erik's presence here on the Forum and appreciated his input here...especially his views on Jazz music. We'll be thinking about you all before, during, and after the MPP show.

Thanks so much.  We miss him every day.  We'll be missing Misti, who can't make it back for the show.

For Erik (exist10z) on what would have been his 50th birthday.

Erik was loved by many . I'm not sure if I ever talked to him personally that I remember but he seemed like a real badass. I'm so sorry Misty! Please stick around here this place is really good for healing.  I know the power of music especially My Morning Jacket can help to heal.

RIP Erik

they did play Steam that night. I didn't know Erik personally but had seen his sister's posts here after his passing and it was really special knowing how much it must have meant to them in that moment. This guy definitely got a lil dusty.
